CSS - Elements Will Not Center In Ie7 Or 8
I am definitely a novice in web design and CSS, so I hope I can tap into the collective knowledge of the more seasoned individuals on this board. Essentially, the website I created (http://www.wacwineclub.com) looks fine in Firefox, but some of the elements are shifted to the left in IE (Such as the menu and horizontal rule). For the life of me, I cannot figure out what is wrong. Any ideas? My code for the index and CSS files are as follows:
INDEX.PHP<? Code: session_start(); ?> <meta name="description" content="Washington Athletic Club - Wine Club"> <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3c.org/TR/1999/REC-html401-19991224/loose.dtd"> <HTML xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <style type="text/css"> <!-- .style5 {color: #FFFFFF} .style7 { font-size: 12px; color: #FFFFFF; } .style8 { font-size: 12px; color: #ADADAD; } --> </style> <script src="/Scripts/swfobject_modified.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <HEAD><TITLE>WAC Wine Club</TITLE> <META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> <META content="Shaun Lewis" name=author> <link rel="shortcut icon" href="Images/favicon.ico"> <LINK href="wacwineclub.css" type=text/css rel=stylesheet> <META content="MSHTML 6.00.5730.11" name=GENERATOR><style type="text/css"> <!-- body { background-color: #666666; padding-bottom: 150px; padding-top: 100px; margin-left: 0px; text-align:center; } #Slideshow { padding-top: 4px; } #header { height: 125px; width: 800px; } #awmAnchor-menu { background-color: #000000; height: 30px; padding-top: 0px; } #Layer1 { position:absolute; width:200px; height:115px; z-index:1; left: 493px; top: 1187px; background-color: #FF00FF; } #Layer2 { position:absolute; width:200px; height:115px; z-index:3; left: 380px; top: 1187px; } #Layer3 { position:absolute; width:200px; height:115px; z-index:1; left: 200px; top: 1187px; } #Layer4 { position:absolute; width:200px; height:115px; z-index:0; left: -208px; top: 171px; visibility: visible; } #xawmMenuPathImg-menu { } a:link { color: #ADADAD; text-decoration: none; } #Layer5 { position:absolute; width:200px; height:115px; z-index:1; } #Layer6 { position:absolute; width:200px; height:190px; z-index:1; margin-left: 50px; margin-top: 40px; border-bottom: #000000 2px solid; border-left: #000000 2px solid; border-right: #000000 2px solid; border-top: #000000 2px solid; background-color: #E5E5E5; float: left; } #Layer7 { position:absolute; width:180px; height:160px; z-index:1; margin-left: 10px; border-right: #000000 1px solid; border-bottom: #000000 1px solid; border-top: #000000 1px solid; border-left: #000000 1px solid; margin-top: 5px; } #Layer8 { position:absolute; width:500px; height:300px; z-index:1; margin-left: 275px; margin-top: 15px; left: -127px; top: 347px; } #Layer9 { position:absolute; width:160px; height:69px; z-index:1; margin-left: 50px; } .style4 { font-size: 16px; color: #ADADAD; } .style6 {color: #ADADAD} .style9 {font-size: 14px} --> </style> <script type="text/JavaScript"> <!-- function MM_findObj(n, d) { //v4.01 var p,i,x; if(!d) d=document; if((p=n.indexOf("?"))>0&&parent.frames.length) { d=parent.frames[n.substring(p+1)].document; n=n.substring(0,p);} if(!(x=d[n])&&d.all) x=d.all[n]; for (i=0;!x&&i<d.forms.length;i++) x=d.forms[i][n]; for(i=0;!x&&d.layers&&i<d.layers.length;i++) x=MM_findObj(n,d.layers[i].document); if(!x && d.getElementById) x=d.getElementById(n); return x; } function MM_showHideLayers() { //v6.0 var i,p,v,obj,args=MM_showHideLayers.arguments; for (i=0; i<(args.length-2); i+=3) if ((obj=MM_findObj(args[i]))!=null) { v=args[i+2]; if (obj.style) { obj=obj.style; v=(v=='show')?'visible':(v=='hide')?'hidden':v; } obj.visibility=v; } } function MM_controlSound(x, _sndObj, sndFile) { //v3.0 var i, method = "", sndObj = eval(_sndObj); if (sndObj != null) { if (navigator.appName == 'Netscape') method = "play"; else { if (window.MM_WMP == null) { window.MM_WMP = false; for(i in sndObj) if (i == "ActiveMovie") { window.MM_WMP = true; break; } } if (window.MM_WMP) method = "play"; else if (sndObj.FileName) method = "run"; } } if (method) eval(_sndObj+"."+method+"()"); else window.location = sndFile; } function MM_openBrWindow(theURL,winName,features) { //v2.0 window.open(theURL,winName, features); } //--> </script> <script type="text/javascript"> var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-1035787-2']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); (function() { var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true; ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? I'm using the :hover pseudo-class currently but I will use JavaScript for IE6 once it displays correctly. The code is below. The problem is that the <div> appears on top of it's parent element but behind all other elements. Code: #wrapper-body ul.staff-list{ list-style-type:none; padding-top:10px; position:relative; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list-team{ width:313px; padding-top:0; padding-bottom:15px; margin-bottom:20px; border-bottom:1px solid #d7e3a9; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list li{ float:left; width:230px; position:relative; padding:8px 0 8px 15px; z-index:1; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list-team li{ width:151px; padding-left:0; padding-left:5px; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list-team li.right{ padding-left:5px; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list-clerks li{ float:none; width:310px; padding-left:5px; } #wrapper-body ul li.highlight{ background-color:#f4f6ec; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list li p{ padding:0 0 9px 0; margin-left:91px; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list li small{ padding:0 0 5px 0; margin-left:91px; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list-clerks li span{ color:#A6302B; display:block; float:left; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list-clerks li span.clerk-name{ width:140px; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list-clerks li span.clerk-phone{ width:120px; background:url(../img/structure/clerks-phone.gif) 0 2px no-repeat; padding-left:23px; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list-clerks li a.clerk-email{ display:block; float:left; height:16px; width:16px; background:url(../img/structure/clerks-mail.gif) 0 3px no-repeat; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list li div.staff-list-detail{ display:none; background:url(../img/structure/staff-list-bottom.gif) left bottom repeat-x; padding-bottom:3px; margin-top:-15px; left:4px; z-index:10; top:15px; position:absolute; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list li div.staff-list-detail a{ background:url(../img/structure/staff-list-bullet.gif) no-repeat 0 4px; padding-left:8px; } #wrapper-body ul.staff-list li:hover div.staff-list-detail{ display:block; } An image of what is happening below: Thanks for reading! Any help is appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read my question. I have a div that has a specified width, and if I put margin-left: auto; and margin-right: auto; the div centers with in the parent div. I have another div that I don't want to have a specified width, and as a result the auto's don't center the div. How can I center my div? I've tried display: block; and that just makes it as wide as the parent div. If I remove display and put float: left, it sizes properly (shrinks to fit the contents), but floats left and doesn't heed the margin auto's. The colors are there to see the containers... I don't plan on keeping them.. please see http://www.scopicdesigns.com/LisaCl..._Portfolio1.htm for example. Thanks, Brad Thanks for reading my question Why does this not center the contents of my page in Firefox but it does in IE? This code is in my linked CSS file. Code: body { text-align: center; margin-top: 10px; background-image: url(images/fall-leaves.jpeg); background-attachment: fixed; /*background-color: #d8d8d8;*/ } for some reason the text inside the item class will not center. see the attachment. the top is how this code renders, the bottom is how i'd like it to look. i'm sure this is something simple that i'll end up slapping myself fore later Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <html> <head> <title> new document </title> <style type="text/css"> #ticker { background: #00f; overflow: auto; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 835px; height: 52px; } #ticker #items { position: relative; top: 0px; } #ticker .cell { display: table-cell; vertical-align: middle; height: 51px; overflow: hidden; border-right: 3px solid #01364d; text-align: center; } #ticker .item { float: left; padding: 0 10px 0 10px; font: bold 10pt Arial; color: #fff; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="ticker"> <div id="items"> <div class="cell" id="item_01" style="width: 160px"><div class="item">Lorem: XXX%</div></div> <div class="cell" id="item_02" style="width: 160px"><div class="item">Lorem: XXX%</div></div> <div class="cell" id="item_03" style="width: 160px"><div class="item">Lorem: XXX%</div></div> <div class="cell" id="item_04" style="width: 160px"><div class="item">Lorem: XXX%</div></div> <div class="cell" id="item_05" style="width: 160px; border: 0"><div class="item">Lorem: XXX%</div></div> </div> </div> </body> </html> Hello, I have a container div and i want to put some fixed-width left-floated divs inside it. The problem is i want to make them appear in the center of the container, instead of left. The problem is i don't know how many of them there's going to be, therefore i can't just put them inside of another fixed-width container and set it's margin to auto. I could probably do it with tables easily, but how would i do it in css? I'm strugling with this code. The homepage is http://thebeadingsite.com and I can't get this to line up properly. Here's my code, any suggestions?? I know this question gets asked a lot but I have had a search on here and google and can't seem to get it working for me. My page has a sidebar div which contains a UL menu (SpryMenuBar from Dreamweaver) I would like to center the menu within the div. I have tried putting it within a child div and playing with auto margins and left 50%, etc. but no joy. If anyone could point out what I'm doing wrong I'd would be very grateful. Another small issue (which I suspect is related) is the <p> in between the two menus wraps around the right of the first menu when viewed in IE. Since we are working in relative units, it's best not to use padding on the sidebar. It will be added to the overall width for standards compliant browsers creating an unknown actual width. 2. Since em units are used for the sidebar value, be aware that its width will vary with different default text sizes. 3. Space between the side of the div and the elements within it can be created by placing a left and right margin on those elements as seen in the ".twoColHybLtHdr #sidebar1 p" rule. */ #sidebar1 { float: left; width: 15%; /* since this element is floated, a width must be given */ background-color: #EBEBEB; /* the background color will be displayed for the length of the content in the column, but no further */ padding: 0; /* top and bottom padding create visual space within this div */ margin: 0; text-align: center; } #menu { margin: 0 auto; } /* Tips for mainContent: 1. The space between the mainContent and sidebar1 is created with the left margin on the mainContent div. No matter how much content the sidebar1 div contains, the column space will remain. You can remove this left margin if you want the #mainContent div's text to fill the #sidebar1 space when the content in #sidebar1 ends. 2. Be aware it is possible to cause float drop (the dropping of the non-floated mainContent area below the sidebar) if an element wider than it can contain is placed within the mainContent div. WIth a hybrid layout (percentage-based overall width with em-based sidebar), it may not be possible to calculate the exact width available. If the user's text size is larger than average, you will have a wider sidebar div and thus, less room in the mainContent div. You should be aware of this limitation - especially if the client is adding content with Contribute. 3. In the Internet Explorer Conditional Comment below, the zoom property is used to give the mainContent "hasLayout." This may help avoid several IE-specific bugs. */ #mainContent { margin: 0; /* the right margin can be given in percentages or pixels. It creates the space down the right side of the page. */ padding: 0; width: 85%; float: left; } #pageContent { margin: 0; padding: 10px; } #navbar { background-color: #AAAAAA; margin: 0; padding: 1px 10px; } #navbar, #navbar a { color:#FF0000; font-size: small; } #navbar a:link, #navbar a:visited { text-decoration:none; } #navbar a:hover, #navbar a:active { text-decoration:underline; } #footer { padding: 10px; /* this padding matches the left alignment of the elements in the divs that appear above it. */ background:#DDDDDD; } #footer p { margin: 0; /* zeroing the margins of the first element in the footer will avoid the possibility of margin collapse - a space between divs */ padding: 10px 0; /* padding on this element will create space, just as the the margin would have, without the margin collapse issue */ } /* Miscellaneous classes for reuse */ .fltrt { /* this class can be used to float an element right in your page. I have a 19 in CRT and a 22 in wide screen LCD monitor. I am trying to make my content center on the page, regardless of the monitor. As it stands, it looks to be centered on teh 19 in, but on the 22 in, it is very much to the left side of the screen. I just got the 22 in. Is there something different you have to do for wide screen monitors? I'm using margin: auto 0px; I have margin and padding off for my Body {} and have set marging and padding on all appropreate elements so that they work the same in IE and FF. In my html page, I'm using xhtml strict. Thanks, Brad I am having a small problem with centering a main container div.. The main div is 700 pixels wide .. I have numerous divs inside this container div. Everything is peachy, but I cant seem for the life of me to get the container div centered in the browser window... I tried <div align="center"> even tried text-align:center; any thoughts? i am trying to get the list to show over two lines like so (using _ as multiple spaces get turned on to one) how do i get both centered. _____item1____item2____item3 item4____item5____item6____item7 Code: <div class="homebodytext"> <ul> <li class="homebodylifloat">item1</li> <li class="homebodylifloat">item2</li> <li class="homebodylifloat">item3</li><br style="clear: both;"><br> <li class="homebodylifloat">item4</li> <li class="homebodylifloat">item5</li> <li class="homebodylifloat">item6</li> <li class="homebodylifloat">item7</li><br style="clear: both;"> </ul> </div> Code: .homebodytext { border: 0px solid #0000; text-align: center; width: 900px; padding-left: 20px; font-weight:bold; } .homebodylifloat { float: left; width: 220px; } Hi All, This is my first post in CSS forums. I want to display a DIV in the center of screen. I am using this DIV for the showing the progress image in my search page (So it is is visible only in some cases.) How can I make it visible in the center of the visible screen (above all other elements). Note: User may have scrolled down the screen. I hope this is possible with CSS I want to center and element, more specifically div elements with css. I have looked through source code from many websites. It seems there is not a simple solution to centering text. I have tried using: Code: .content { align: center; } I would like my content to remain centered even when the browser is resized. Instead for using "right: 400px" this works however for my resolution but not for the next guy. I am lost and would like an explanation. For other thread there were vague mentions about rightmargin and left margin. Unfortunately experimenting proved unsuccessful; therefore, leading me to write this thread. I greatly appreciate all help provided. Thanks I've got a 2-col CSS layout based on this: http://www.456bereastreet.com/lab/d...sslayout/2-col/ The right column is defined with this: Code: #wrap { background:#FFF6CA; margin:0 auto; width:900px; } #main { background: white; float:left; width:690px; } #sidebar { background:#FFF6CA; float:right; width:200px; } In that "column", I'd like to have a variable width table (it's a calendar), but I can't figure out how to center it in the 200 px width hello i have this style in a css file.... .subheadinginvgreen { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; color: #006666; font-weight: bold; sline-height: .2em; align:center; } somehow when i apply it to a div tag, it does not center the text...e.g. <div class="">test text</div> |
