CSS - Swapping Divs On Link Click
Hi Guys, I'm trying to create a category list.
One first load, the category list is going to be a short list of the top 5 major categories. Each major category will have a sublist of 3 subcategories below it. Lastly, there will be a link labeled 'more' that when clicked, will toggle out divs and display a full category list. Lastly, all other primary categories will have their short list hidden as well, so you only see the Primary Category followed by a 'more' link. Here's a crude example of what I mean. First block is 'first load'. Then the next block would be how it'd look if I clicked the "more" link below vehicles -------------------------------- Vehicles -Cars -Trucks -Motorcycles MORE Stuff -Musical Instruments -Camping -clothing MORE Electronics -televisions -stereos -video games MORE ------------------------------ ex. Vehicles -Cars -Trucks -Motorcycles -Boats -Tractors -antiques -commercial Less Stuff MORE Electronics MORE ------------------------------ I think every primary category (ie vehicles) will require 3 divs. Div1 - short list with 3 sub categories Div2 - full list of all subcategories Div3 - hidden list At first load, the DIV1 variant will be displayed for all primary categories. When the 'more' link is clicked for a particular primary category, it will swap it's div1 for it's div2, and at the same time, swap all other categories div1 for their div3. If the 'less' link is clicked on div3, everything would revert back to normal, all primary categories showing div1. I need to find/write some javascript which would toggle the div's. Does this make sense? Am I going about this the right way? I'd think the code would look something like the following, with each Primary category being cat1, cat2, cat3, etc. Code for first Primary Category Code: <div id="cat1div1"> sample text <a href="javascript:toggle2('cat1div1','cat1div2');javascript:toggle2('cat2div1','cat2div3'); javascript:toggle2('cat3div1','cat3div3');"> more </a> </div> <div id="cat1div2"> a whole bunch of sample text <a href="javascript:toggle2('cat1div2','cat1div1');javascript:toggle2('cat2div3','cat2div1'); javascript:toggle2('cat3div3','cat3div1');">less</a> </div> <div id="cat1div3"> <a href="javascript:toggle2('cat1div3','cat1div2');">MORE</a> </div> Similar Tutorialshttp://tinyurl.com/5llwfl I'm having some problems with this page in particular. Try clicking on one of the Left or Right white image arrows below the main picture. This only occurs in Firefox 2.x. Once you click the link, the content area below "Starting from $278.497" should shift roughly 5 pixels down. I thought it may be related to the dotted link outline that surrounds the image, but that was not the case. I applied styles to get rid of that and there was no changes. I also thought it may be related to a position:relative; bug which this site has been notorious for. I tried making certain divs in that area position:relative to no avail. So to test further I tried an overall #content *{position:relative;} fix which could not fix the position shift, either. I'm not sure what else it could be. And while I do have access to the build of this app, I have not been able to reproduce the issue by downloading all HTML, CSS, and image files locally. Hello Is there a way i can restore my <a href> link back to its original color, that is before the a:visited event, when I click on another link? PS. no Javascript code needed, is their an alternative in css? For some odd reason, the link in one of my DIVS is inaccessible. It's styled as a link, so I know it's being recognized, but mouse-over does nothing, and it won't respond to a click. I've tried to bring the DIV to the front via z-index, but no help. The pile of code is below, but the DIV I'm needing help with is "frontcontentbox". You can see an example at www . deepwaterchurch / next Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en"> <head> <title></title> <meta http-equiv="Content-type" content="text/html;charset=UTF-8" /> <link href="css/universal.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <link href="css/jflow.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <link href="tweet/jquery.tweet.css" media="all" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"/> <script src="scripts/jquery-1.2.6.pack.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="scripts/jquery.flow.1.2.auto.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <!--[if lt IE 7]> <script type="text/javascript" src="unitpngfix.js"></script> <![endif]--> <script type="text/javascript"> $(function() { $("div#controller").jFlow({ slides: "#slides", width: "462px", height: "289px", auto:true, }); If I remove the "float:left;" I can then click the links in the left hand div but the divs are no longer aligned. The problem only happens in FF not in IE. I have copied the relative code below that is causing the problem. Code: #left{float:left;position:relative;width:49%;} #right{position:relative;} <div id="left"><a href="hh">hh</a></div> <div id="right"><a href="hh">hh</a></div> I don't want to have to change the layout just for FF so I'm hoping there is a fix for this problem. Thanks Hey guys, Just seeing if this is possible. By the way this is for a myspace page. Looking to have a link to change opacity on current page. table table table, div table table{ border-color:rgb(0,0,0); border-style:solid; border-width:2px; background-color:rgb(55,55,5); opacity:0.8; -moz-opacity:0.7; filter:alpha(opacity=50); } This is the code currently. Is it possible (without java) to have a link that would set "opacity:0" Thanks! Hi, I have a pure css menu that uses hover, Kravitz told me it wont work in touchscreens which I searched for and is so, thanks Kravitz. Also one told me to keep the hover and add a class to make it posible to click on li if hover does not work. Problem, cant test this as I dont have any touchscreen. So 1. is there a way to add a code to disable the hover affect? 2, maybe a website where you can test but using mouse.... 3. Dont remember, its validates but are there anything against using <a href="#">? Thanks, Helen Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; Anyone plz help me?????????????? Thx in advance............ Am hoping someone knows the deal here... I'm setting up a site where html skins feed into PHP to generate the final pages. It's very simple; just header, footer and main.html's for the index page. The problem: A DIV to the left of the main body holds a no-repeat background [to place an image in that area]. I want a slight overlap with the main body div; alas the second div contains links, and with even the slightest overlap of these 2 divs, the links go funky ~ you can't select them. I tried z-indexing it to no avail Does anyone know if there's a route around this conflict? The page: (URL address blocked: See forum rules) [koff. am just kicking it of layout wise, so do excuse the lack of actual content!] thanks for any help [hopey hopey] Ok...Im developing a new site for my web design group. the url is : http://www.amweb-design.com/beta/ Anyways on the top of it i have a Featured client section that fades in when the page loads. Well i also have some < > i want to be able to switch the images of clients and them fade. Im kinda new at css so any help or examples would be great! thanks in advance Austin The tables I will be swapping out are 1 row in height and are used for navigation. I have several tables with set widths I need to switch. The table columns do not have fixed widths, or in some cases several columns have set widths while the rest are relative to them and the tables set width. An example would be: Code: <table width="400"> <tr> <td>column 1</td> <td>column 2</td> <td>column 3</td> </tr> </table> Now when rendering the browser would estimate each <td> width relative to the <table> width. In this case approx 33% each. If I were to change the text in each column it would re-adjust the widths making a more even adjustment according to the content size. Now I know every one hear knows that but I just wanted to make it crystal clear as to what I am trying to do with CSS and either <DIV> or <OL> tags. If I used either methods below is there a way I could just set the text and have the <DIV> or <OL> auto apply the relative width like a <TABLE> would? Code: <div style="width:400px;"> <div style="float:left;">column 1</div> <div style="float:left;">column 2</div> <div style="float:left;">column 3</div> </div> <ol style="width:400px;margin:0px;padding:0px;list-style:none;"> <li style="float:left;">column 1</li> <li style="float:left;">column 2</li> <li style="float:left;">column 3</li> </ol> I can do a decent amount of stuff with CSS but this issue always has stumped me and no matter how long I research I don't come up with any proper answers. I'm sure it's something stupid and obvious, but could someone tell me why this works (h1 goes away and image is seen): #branding { height: 100px; position: relative; z-index: 10; } #branding h1 a { position: absolute; top: 16.5px; left: 293px; width: 214px; height: 67px; text-indent: -9999px; background: url(../images/branding.png) no-repeat; } and this doesn't (h1 goes away, but no image swap): #nav_main { position: relative; z-index: 2; height: 50px; } #nav_main h2 { position: absolute; z-index: 6; top: 0; left:0; height: 120px; width: 800px; text-indent: -9999px; background: url(../images/nav_mainh2.png) no repeat; } What I don't like about my code below is that space is kept for Sections A and B, even when they are not visible. Code: <div id="container"> <div id="A"> Section A. <input type="button" value="Toggle extra" onClick="toggleExtra()"> <span id="extra"></span> </div> <div id="B"> Section B. </div> </div> What I really want is for Section A to take the place of Section B when the other button is clicked. Purpose: I want the user to arrive at my web page and click a button to establish why they are there. If for A, they will be shown content for topic A. If for B, content for topic B. (Further illustration: If you toggle the extra text on in section A and then view Section B, the blank area for Section A is that much bigger...) Functional but incorrect code: Code: <html> <head> <link rel=stylesheet href="../common.css" type="text/css"> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"/> <script type="text/javascript"> //<![CDATA[ function switchIt(mode) { if (mode == 'A') { document.getElementById('A').style.visibility = 'visible'; document.getElementById('B').style.visibility = 'hidden'; } else { document.getElementById('A').style.visibility = 'hidden'; document.getElementById('B').style.visibility = 'visible'; } } var toggle = -1; function toggleExtra() { toggle *= -1; if (toggle == 1) { document.getElementById('extra').innerHTML = "<br>extra"; } else { document.getElementById('extra').innerHTML = ""; } } //]]> </script> <STYLE TYPE="text/css"> <!-- body { text-align: center; } #container { margin:0 auto 0 auto; width:400px; border:2px outset white; } #A { visibility:hidden; border:2px outset white; } #B { visibility:hidden; border:2px outset white; } --> </STYLE> </head> <body> <form> <input type="button" value="Show section A" onClick="switchIt('A')"> <input type="button" value="Show section B" onClick="switchIt('B')"> </form> <div id="container"> <div id="A"> Section A. <input type="button" value="Toggle extra" onClick="toggleExtra()"> <span id="extra"></span> </div> <div id="B"> Section B. </div> </div> </body> </html> Thanks! oak island Ok, so I've learned to stay away from tables when you don't need them, and I have an instance where this is the case. I have a container div that has a header, content and a footer. On my home page, I have to divs next to each other with the same height and a div below them towards the right. To simplify my problem, look at this example. Code: <html> <body> <div style="float:right"> Hello there! </div> <hr> </body> </html> If there's a "float:right" on that div, the hr tag below doesn't get pushed down. But if I use relative positioning and don't use the floats, I can't put the two top divs next to each other. The other option is to use absolute positioning, but again content below doesn't get pushed down correctly. It seems that using "clear:both" works, but it seems weird that this has to be done. For example if I have floating divs in a container, I can get them to stretch out the container like so: Code: <html> <body> <div style="border: 1px solid #000; "> <div style="float:right"> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> </div> <div style="clear: both"></div> </div> <hr> </body> </html> Am I missing something fundamental here? Is there a better solution? Thanks in advance. Here's the site in Question: http://www.winchps.vic.edu.au It's a standard fixed width floated DIV columns with a wrapper. One thing it does have is a second DIV inside both columns to display the Gradient background over the top of the repeated background. It works perfect in Firefox & IE7 (with a tweak) but IE6 mkes the sidebar nested div drop below the original sidebar DIV click here for a screenshot for those lucky enough not to have IE6. Here's the CSS code for the basic layout: Code: body { font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Sans-Serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: center; margin: 0px 0px 60px 0px; padding:0px; border: 0; line-height: 2; } #header { width: 802px; } #wrapper { width: 802px; margin:0px; padding: 0px; text-align: left; margin: 0 auto; background: url(images/bodybg.jpg) center repeat-y; } #content { padding: 0px; margin: 0px; } #maingrad { background: url(images/winchcontentgrad.jpg) top left repeat-x; padding: 10px; } #main { width: 589px; float: right; background: url(images/winchcontentbg.jpg) repeat; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; } #mainstop { width: 589px; float: right; background: url(images/winchcontentbg.jpg) repeat; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; border-bottom: solid 1px #000; font-size: 10px; } #sidebargrad { background: url(images/winchsidebargrad.jpg) top left repeat-x; padding: 10px 5px 0px 10px; } #sidebar { width: 200px; float: left; background: url(images/winchsidebg.jpg) repeat; line-height: 2; font-size: 14px; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; } I obviously need to put a conditional comment in there, same for what I did for the minor IE7 tweak, but I'm struggling to suss out what's causing it, I haven't found the specific issue on any of the regular sites (PIE etc). Anyone got any ideas? Centering DIVs inside other DIVs in Firefox? Can it be done in a straight forward way? Setting the inner DIVs float to none seemed to work for IE but not FF. The Example I've read a bunch about how div's won't stretch to accomidate div's inside of them if they overrun the height/min-height set for the container div. How do I get around this? You can see the skeleton of the site above. It's fine unless you resize the window smaller than the content. Alright, I've been working on my own custom border box for a while and I've almost got it, but it has a few problems still. How I do it is I have one div that contains it all (.box) that defines the height and width of the whole box. Then I have three boxRows to lay out the images, and then I define how three cells in each of those rows should behave, very much like how custom borders used to be done with tables. Here are the problems: In both firefox and internet explorer, the bottom row and the far right column actually appear OUTSIDE the .box containing box. There are two additional problems in internet explorer. First, the middle row handles the auto height differently and only expands about 10px instead of the height of the containing box. The second is that the whole middle row for some reason appears to be pushed to the right by about 16px. Any help would be appreciated. Here's the code: HTML: Code: <html> <head> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="reset.css" /> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="testBox.css"> </head> <body> <div class="box"> <div class="boxRowTop"> <div class="boxCellLeft"></div> <div class="boxCellMiddle"></div> <div class="boxCellRight"></div> </div> <div class="boxRowMiddle"> <div class="boxCellLeft"></div> <div class="boxCellMiddle"></div> <div class="boxCellRight"></div> </div> <div class="boxRowBottom"> <div class="boxCellLeft"></div> <div class="boxCellMiddle"></div> <div class="boxCellRight"></div> </div> </body> </html> And here is the layout css file: Code: /* Box classes */ .box { background: rgb(120,120,120); height: 200px; width: 500px; } .boxRowTop { height: 16px; position: relative; width:%100; } .boxRowMiddle { height: auto; width:%100; position: relative; } .boxRowBottom { height: 16px; width:%100; position: relative; } .boxCellLeft { height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 16px; } .boxCellMiddle { height: 100%; margin-left: 16px; margin-right: 16px; width: auto; } .boxCellRight { height: 100%; left: 100%; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 16px; } /* Define Cell Backgrounds/Images */ .boxRowTop .boxCellLeft { background: url(../LandingImages/topleft_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } .boxRowTop .boxCellMiddle { background: url(../LandingImages/top_border.png) repeat-x; } .boxRowTop .boxCellRight { background: url(../LandingImages/topright_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } .boxRowMiddle .boxCellLeft { background: url(../LandingImages/left_border.png) repeat-y; } .boxRowMiddle .boxCellMiddle { background: rgb(255,255,255); } .boxRowMiddle .boxCellRight { background: url(../LandingImages/right_border.png) repeat-y; } .boxRowBottom .boxCellLeft { background: url(../LandingImages/bottomleft_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } .boxRowBottom .boxCellMiddle { background: url(../LandingImages/bottom_border.png) repeat-x; } .boxRowBottom .boxCellRight { background: url(../LandingImages/bottomright_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } And last, the reset CSS, which I don't think has anything to do with the problems because if I take it out it still has them. Thanks! PROBLEM: I create a nice button using the sliding doors technique for rounded corners. But the button displays with 100% width unless I float it. My layout requires that the buttons be inline with the text, so floating won't work. Anyone know an alternative? I wouldn't mind floating but I want the button to show inline with the text. When I use float:left, it removes it from the inline flow. Basically, I want a very modular button that can be used in several different places on a page. In many cases, floating is fine because the mockup has it out of the inline text, but I want to use it there, too. Here's the HTML: <a class="button" href="#"><span>Update Profile</span></a> Here's the css: a.button:link, a.button:visited { background:url(button_right.gif) no-repeat right top; } a.button span:hover, a.button span:active { background:url(button_left_hover.gif) no-repeat right top; } a.button span { background:url(button_left.gif) no-repeat left top; color:#fff; cursorointer; display:block; height:20px; line-height:20px; margin:0 2px 0 0; padding:0 10px; position:relative; white-space:nowrap; } I have my links defined with a dashed border, but I don't want this on linked images and I'm trying to figure out if I can accomplish this with CSS only without additional markup in my HTML file. Here is a sample file: http://www. shawkey.com/test/imagebordertest.html Any suggestions on how I can get the dashed border to not appear below the image and only appear below the text with just CSS? |
