CSS - Trouble With Tables
I'm still new to CSS and I am trying to add table properties to my external style sheet. I really only want to set the table borders and colors of the borders and cell padding in the style sheet.
I can do it like this and get exactly what I want; a table with a ridge border, no background color and a dashed border for the cells. Code: table {table-layout: auto; border-collapse: collapse; empty-cells: show; border: 6px ridge #bcbcbc; } td, th { padding:10px; border: 2px dashed #bcbcbc; } However my problem is that I Use tables of different styles, some having background, some don't, some don't even have borders. So I wanted to use a selector for each style. I tried this, but this will give me a table with a dotted border and no cell borders. Code: #nobgtable { table-layout: auto; border-collapse: collapse; empty-cells: show; border: 6px ridge #bcbcbc; td,th padding:10px; border: 2px dashed #bcbcbc; } What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Similar TutorialsSo I've decided to go the 'pure css' route other than my tables for tabular database content. I had most of the 'positioning' finalized when I ran into a huge trouble . . . how to make a border image repeat and place it properly. After getting frustrated with the border, I decided to use one simple table just to get the borders correct. Everything was fine there even though I didn't want to give in to the table temptation. That is until I tried to add my suckerfish dropdown and have it centered. So now I'm stuck. My site is turning into a table based site and I'm really annoyed that I can't fix it myself. I've had trouble with coding before, but I always manage to fix it myself. Can somebody please point me in the right direction? I've been searching these forums and the web for 2 days and not a single example can be fine tuned into my solution. [edit] p.s. I know the css and html is a mess right now. I'm going to clean it all up once I get something working =/ http://www.mytreetv.com/showcase/index.php css Thank god I'm doing this site for free as a favor to a friend of the family instead of a paying job. I'm not confident enough with CSS to just use it, so I'm mixing it with some tables too. I want a layout with two tables next to each at the top and then another below. The two at the top are working fine, but the one below keeps jumping back up to the top. I've managed to get an ugly fix by putting in a load of <br> but this doesn't work in IE7 (unless I add a lot more, pushing the content way down in other browsers) and isn't much of a solution. The other problem I have is that I want to have the majority of my page with a white background, but to get a surrounding border I've set the body background to be a colour and then placed a div around all the content. I want this div to be the size of the page and so set it's height to 100%, but this makes it too small. Not sure why. Here is my code for my page and CSS. If anyone can help I'd be most grateful. Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <title></title> <link href="incl/default.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- function navon(num) { document.getElementById("nav" + num).style.backgroundColor = '#CDEB8B'; document.getElementById("nav" + num).style.paddingTop = '0px' document.getElementById("nav" + num).style.paddingBottom = '0px'; document.getElementById("nav" + num).style.borderTopWidth = '10px'; document.getElementById("nav" + num).style.borderBottomWidth = '10px'; } function navoff(num) { document.getElementById("nav" + num).style.backgroundColor = '#C3D9FF'; document.getElementById("nav" + num).style.paddingTop = '8px' document.getElementById("nav" + num).style.paddingBottom = '8px'; document.getElementById("nav" + num).style.borderTopWidth = '2px'; document.getElementById("nav" + num).style.borderBottomWidth = '2px'; } //--> </script> </head> <body> <div class="main"> <table width="29%" border="0" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="5" align="left"> <tr> <td><img src="" alt="" width="230" height="80" border="0" /></td> </tr> </table> <table width="70%" height="60px" border="0" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="5" align="right"> <tr> <td width="180px" class="nav" id="nav1" onmouseover="navon('1')" onmouseout="navoff('1')">link</td> <td width="180px" class="nav" id="nav2" onmouseover="navon('2')" onmouseout="navoff('2')">link</td> <td width="180px" class="nav" id="nav3" onmouseover="navon('3')" onmouseout="navoff('3')">link</td> <td width="180px" class="nav" id="nav4" onmouseover="navon('4')" onmouseout="navoff('4')">link</td> <td width="180px" class="nav" id="nav5" onmouseover="navon('5')" onmouseout="navoff('5')">link</td> </tr> </table> <br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /> <table width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="5" align="center"> <tr> <td width="70%"> some content </td> <td width="30%"> some more content </td> </tr> </table> </div> </body> </html> Code: @charset "utf-8"; /* CSS Document */ body { padding-right: 4%; padding-left: 4%; padding-top: 30px; padding-bottom: 30px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0.1em; color: #000000; background-color: #EEEEEE; } a:link { color: #000000; text-decoration: none; } a:visited { color: #000000; text-decoration: none; } a:active { color: #000000; text-decoration: none; } a:hover { color: #000000; text-decoration: underline; } .main { background:#FFFFFF; border: 10px solid #36393D; width: 89%; padding: 5%; } .nav { padding: 8px; background-color: #C3D9FF; vertical-align: middle; text-align: center; font-family: Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 24px; color: #36393D; cursor:pointer; border: 2px solid #36393D; } OK, I thought I was so smart. Working on a site that is 100% CSS AND Priority 3 WAI compliant, and thought I had it - it looked good on PC IE, Mozilla and Safari...only to be shot down by Mac IE 5.5, which I know is a bit of a black sheep in terms of CSS. Can those of you with knowledge of such things take a look at: http://www.getbrightstar.com/v2/ And let me know why Mac IE 5.5 wouldn't float the columns correctly? The tricky part is that *I* don't have a mac and can't find an IE 5.5 emulator online like safari, but my client DOES have one and she uses IE 5.5, so it would be best if I could get it right the first time...I don't want to use my client for compatibility testing. I have floated them to the left and right and cleared the floats for the 'latest events' div, but the media and replays div won't floar in the "middle" of each side. The CSS for the page is: http://209.123.229.141/css/racing_profile.css Hi, i have a simple bit of code which is a div that contains lots of rectangular images in one big row. I was these images to flow through the div so that they appear above and below each other if need be. Gareth. hi I have this.. http://www.thehundreds.com/thewall/index.php as u can see the threads to the right are acting up once the float of the login is done, because the height is not the same.. is there anyway to force the threads div to continue to line up, or better yet, have that div to the right of the login without using a float?? Hi Everyone, I have a page I am working on that works perfect in IE, but having a little trouble with Firefox. The Navigation menw lines up perfect in IE, but seems to "fall off the edge" in Firefox.....haven't checked the other browsers, but I'm sure it would be the same....the width is set to 100%.... I would post the link, but this forum won't let me.....I got the script from Dynamic Drive and it was called: Solid Block Menu Style sheet for Menu: .menu { margin: 0; float:left; font: bold 14px Arial; width: 100%; overflow: hidden; margin-bottom: 1em; border: 1px solid #66FFFF; border-width: 1px 0px; background: url(images/menu_back.gif) center center repeat-x; } .menu li { display: inline; } .menu li a { float: right; color: white; padding: 7px 12px; text-decoration: none; } .menu li a:visited { color: #000000; } .menu li a:hover, .menu li .current{ color: #FFFFFF; background: transparent url(images/menu_back_over.gif) center center repeat-x; } CODE in HTML: <ul class="menu"> <li><a href="URL HERE">Frosty Questionnaire</a></li> <li><a href="URL HERE">Board of Directors</a></li> <li><a href="URL HERE">Sponsorship & Volunteer Opportunities</a></li> <li><a href="URL HERE" class="current">Home</a></li> </ul> <br style="clear: left" /> Thanks! http://lovemeforme.org/ang/ I realize it's because of the float: right and float: left, but I put it in a container with a set width, but it's made no difference. I can't put a margin-left/margin-right to them because the layout is centered and it won't work on other resolutions.. hmm, any ideas? Thanks! Code: <div class="message"> <table> <tr> <td>Hello World</td> </tr> </table> </div> Code: div.message { border: 1px solid #000000; } For some reason that does not produce a border around the div. Is there a reason why not? i have a small image in a big div, and when one rolls over any part of the image or the div the background color of the div changes and the image swaps out. i dont know why, but im having a hard time getting this done. i feel like its simpler than i am envisioning it. any help would be much apreciated. ben ok im having some trouble with the layout of some stuff. i have my webpage set up so i have a <div> floating to the left and a content area to the right. in my "content" area, i have an img where i used "float:left;" so i can have text to the right of it. but now after that, i have <br clear='left' />. the problem is that when i put that break in there, it clears the float for the first <div>. is there anyway around this? here is some sample code. Code: <html> <head> <style type="text/css"> div{ float:left; width:150px; color:red;} </style> </head> <body> <div> <p>text</p><p>text</p><p>text</p><p>text</p> </div> <img scr='fake.jpg'> <p>text</p> <br clear='left' /> <p>text under thats not susppose to clear float to the left</p> </body> </html> Hi, I got a very basic problem here. my site http://www.destroyclothing.com/destroy.htm what im tryen to do is move that top image, with the logo on the left, to go down to be even with the black bar. ive tried padding and margin, but it wont go down. i tried moving the black bar up with margin and padding also. nothing seems to work. ive even tried z-index properties. I dont get it. I dont want to use position relative. i dont even know if that will work either. someone know? Thanks Hi All, Just in the middle of designing a website for my personal hobbies. I have used alot of CSS to create the layout of the page. The problem being it looks perfect in Firefox, Opera, Seamonkey etc etc BUT NOT IE!!! In IE it is all over the place, nothing is where it should be. I checked my CSS against w3 validator, and it came back with a few errors, so i decided to fix them... it then looked even worse... in ALL BROWSERS! So i decided to go back to how i had it originally. The site in question is my username. You can access the css stylesheet file by adding /test.css to the end of the domain name. Any information, or anyone else had problem like this? All the best for now, Mike after just getting my site fixed up, I have encountered a small problem with the divs, where the middle div (the main content) just ignores the right div (where im going to put adds). I was hoping someone could take a quick look at it and tell me how i could fix this small problem. http://funnyguys99.tripod.com/index.htm There are better details of the errors on my page, if you didn't quite get the problem. Hey I have a dashed border to the right of my menu, i was wondering how i can make it reach the bottom of my page, without having to fill up all the content example of what it looks like: Navigation | | link | link | link | Example of what i want it to look like Navigation | | link | link | link | | | | | | bottom of page. This is the Css code: DIV#sidebar { LEFT: 0px; WIDTH: 12em; POSITION: absolute; TOP: 0px; HEIGHT: auto; BORDER-RIGHT: black 1px dashed; } Greetings! I seem to have some problems with the hover pseudo-class in IE6. I have tried many combinations but cannot get the color to change on a hover. The other attributes seem to work ok, such as background color, cursor, etc. When I place the COLOR attribute in, IE6 just seems to ignore it. here are the significant snippets of the CSS: This is at the very top of the CSS external..note that the color that is desired on hover is #0000FF or blue: Code: A:link {color: #FFFF00; text-decoration: none} A:visited {color: #FFBF00; text-decoration: none} A:hover {color: #0000FF; text-decoration: none} A:active {color: #C0FFC0; text-decoration: none} I am using relative positioning for my "menu" elements, so I created a CSS block for each item that results in the following: Code: #home, a { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; color: #CC0000; position: relative; top: -200px; left: -390px; text-decoration: none; } #aboutus, a { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; color: #CC0000; position: relative; top: -170px; left: -460px; text-decoration: none; } #services, a { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; color: #CC0000; position: relative; top: -140px; left: -553px; text-decoration: none; } #faqs, a { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; color: #CC0000; position: relative; top: -110px; left: -682px; text-decoration: none; } #contact, a { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; color: #CC0000; position: relative; top: -97px; left: 170px; text-decoration: none; } As can be seen the base color or starting color of the menu item is #CC0000 (red). The actual HTML is very simple: Code: <a id="home" href="index3.html">Home</a> <a id="aboutus" href="aboutus.htm">About Us</a> <a id="services" href="services.htm">Our Services</a> <a id="faqs" href="faqs.htm">Questions</a> <a id="contact" href="contactus.htm">Contact Us</a> What now happens, is that each menu item displays in RED, but when you hover over it, the text does not change color to the BLUE that I want. It just remains RED. Yet, when I add an attribute such as "background-color: green" to that HOVER directive, it works fine, it just wont change the text. Is this one of those Microsoft IE problems, or am I doing something wrong?? Thanks, in advance for your help! The data that follows will be formatted so that it is displayed below its respective column heading. I've already spent half a day trying but it doesn't display the way it should. Also, it tends to center, thus bunching up. It should spread evenly. Can someone please help? Thanks! |
