I have one div that is set to "display: none". Inside this div I have another set to "display: none". When I change the style of the outer div to "display: block", the inner div appears as well. Is there a way to keep the inner div hidden?? I had a problem earlier with my containing DIV pushing too wide which was resolved by adding "overflow:hidden" to my containing DIV. The problem is now that it's cutting off the sides of one of my graphics. At the bottom of my page, I have a link which you can click that will (through the magic of javascript) reveal divs on either side of my main content (the link at the bottom of the page says "reveal sea creature") When overflow:hidden was NOT on my containing DIV, I had the problem with all the extra space, but these revealing divs worked fine. Now that I add overflow:hidden, the extra space is gone, but the divs are cut off. I've tried pushing everything to the left which seems to make the DIV on the right work fine, but the left is still a problem. I realize this doesn't make sense without code, so here's the site. www . deepwaterchurch . com Thanks so much. Ok, so I've learned to stay away from tables when you don't need them, and I have an instance where this is the case. I have a container div that has a header, content and a footer. On my home page, I have to divs next to each other with the same height and a div below them towards the right. To simplify my problem, look at this example. Code: <html> <body> <div style="float:right"> Hello there! </div> <hr> </body> </html> If there's a "float:right" on that div, the hr tag below doesn't get pushed down. But if I use relative positioning and don't use the floats, I can't put the two top divs next to each other. The other option is to use absolute positioning, but again content below doesn't get pushed down correctly. It seems that using "clear:both" works, but it seems weird that this has to be done. For example if I have floating divs in a container, I can get them to stretch out the container like so: Code: <html> <body> <div style="border: 1px solid #000; "> <div style="float:right"> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> </div> <div style="clear: both"></div> </div> <hr> </body> </html> Am I missing something fundamental here? Is there a better solution? Thanks in advance. Here's the site in Question: http://www.winchps.vic.edu.au It's a standard fixed width floated DIV columns with a wrapper. One thing it does have is a second DIV inside both columns to display the Gradient background over the top of the repeated background. It works perfect in Firefox & IE7 (with a tweak) but IE6 mkes the sidebar nested div drop below the original sidebar DIV click here for a screenshot for those lucky enough not to have IE6. Here's the CSS code for the basic layout: Code: body { font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Sans-Serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: center; margin: 0px 0px 60px 0px; padding:0px; border: 0; line-height: 2; } #header { width: 802px; } #wrapper { width: 802px; margin:0px; padding: 0px; text-align: left; margin: 0 auto; background: url(images/bodybg.jpg) center repeat-y; } #content { padding: 0px; margin: 0px; } #maingrad { background: url(images/winchcontentgrad.jpg) top left repeat-x; padding: 10px; } #main { width: 589px; float: right; background: url(images/winchcontentbg.jpg) repeat; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; } #mainstop { width: 589px; float: right; background: url(images/winchcontentbg.jpg) repeat; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; border-bottom: solid 1px #000; font-size: 10px; } #sidebargrad { background: url(images/winchsidebargrad.jpg) top left repeat-x; padding: 10px 5px 0px 10px; } #sidebar { width: 200px; float: left; background: url(images/winchsidebg.jpg) repeat; line-height: 2; font-size: 14px; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; } I obviously need to put a conditional comment in there, same for what I did for the minor IE7 tweak, but I'm struggling to suss out what's causing it, I haven't found the specific issue on any of the regular sites (PIE etc). Anyone got any ideas? Centering DIVs inside other DIVs in Firefox? Can it be done in a straight forward way? Setting the inner DIVs float to none seemed to work for IE but not FF. The Example I've read a bunch about how div's won't stretch to accomidate div's inside of them if they overrun the height/min-height set for the container div. How do I get around this? You can see the skeleton of the site above. It's fine unless you resize the window smaller than the content. Alright, I've been working on my own custom border box for a while and I've almost got it, but it has a few problems still. How I do it is I have one div that contains it all (.box) that defines the height and width of the whole box. Then I have three boxRows to lay out the images, and then I define how three cells in each of those rows should behave, very much like how custom borders used to be done with tables. Here are the problems: In both firefox and internet explorer, the bottom row and the far right column actually appear OUTSIDE the .box containing box. There are two additional problems in internet explorer. First, the middle row handles the auto height differently and only expands about 10px instead of the height of the containing box. The second is that the whole middle row for some reason appears to be pushed to the right by about 16px. Any help would be appreciated. Here's the code: HTML: Code: <html> <head> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="reset.css" /> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="testBox.css"> </head> <body> <div class="box"> <div class="boxRowTop"> <div class="boxCellLeft"></div> <div class="boxCellMiddle"></div> <div class="boxCellRight"></div> </div> <div class="boxRowMiddle"> <div class="boxCellLeft"></div> <div class="boxCellMiddle"></div> <div class="boxCellRight"></div> </div> <div class="boxRowBottom"> <div class="boxCellLeft"></div> <div class="boxCellMiddle"></div> <div class="boxCellRight"></div> </div> </body> </html> And here is the layout css file: Code: /* Box classes */ .box { background: rgb(120,120,120); height: 200px; width: 500px; } .boxRowTop { height: 16px; position: relative; width:%100; } .boxRowMiddle { height: auto; width:%100; position: relative; } .boxRowBottom { height: 16px; width:%100; position: relative; } .boxCellLeft { height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 16px; } .boxCellMiddle { height: 100%; margin-left: 16px; margin-right: 16px; width: auto; } .boxCellRight { height: 100%; left: 100%; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 16px; } /* Define Cell Backgrounds/Images */ .boxRowTop .boxCellLeft { background: url(../LandingImages/topleft_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } .boxRowTop .boxCellMiddle { background: url(../LandingImages/top_border.png) repeat-x; } .boxRowTop .boxCellRight { background: url(../LandingImages/topright_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } .boxRowMiddle .boxCellLeft { background: url(../LandingImages/left_border.png) repeat-y; } .boxRowMiddle .boxCellMiddle { background: rgb(255,255,255); } .boxRowMiddle .boxCellRight { background: url(../LandingImages/right_border.png) repeat-y; } .boxRowBottom .boxCellLeft { background: url(../LandingImages/bottomleft_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } .boxRowBottom .boxCellMiddle { background: url(../LandingImages/bottom_border.png) repeat-x; } .boxRowBottom .boxCellRight { background: url(../LandingImages/bottomright_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } And last, the reset CSS, which I don't think has anything to do with the problems because if I take it out it still has them. I have looked for a tutorial on how to do this but am having no luck with the search engines. Here is a picture of what I would like to do. If anyone can assist me with this it would be very helpful. Or maybe even point me in the direction of a source. Thank you! Hi Folks This is my first post here, hopefully I'll keep to etiquette I'm always ready to be corrected if I step out of line. Anyway, I have an unusual problem I can't seem to solve. I am making a menu with drop downs using lists, I have it working in my HTML editor (CoffeeCup). When I try to view it in Firefox or IE7 the sub lists show and push the tabs I made to the side. Here is the CSS I'm trying to use, some I've taken from tutorials, some of my own (which is where the problem possibly lies) Code: /*1. Taken from http://www.sohtanaka.com/web-design/liquid-color-adjustable-css-buttons/ with thanks */ .btn { float: left; background: url(images/btn_left.png) no-repeat; margin: 5px 0; } .btn a{ float: left; height: 40px; width:100px; background: url(images/btn_stretch.png) repeat-x left top; line-height: 40px; color: #fff; font-size: 1em; text-decoration: none; padding-bottom:25px; padding-left:10px; } .btn span { background: url(images/btn_right.png) no-repeat; float: left; width: 10px; height: 40px; } .btn_home { background-color: #575757;padding-left:10px; } .btn_e1 { background-color: #575757;padding-left:10px; } .btn_e2 { background-color: #575757;padding-left:10px; } .btn_e3 { background-color: #575757;padding-left:10px; } .btn_e4 { background-color: #575757;padding-left:10px; } .btn_e5 { background-color: #575757;padding-left:10px; } .btn_home:hover { background-color: #DC134C; } .btn_e1:hover { background-color: #DC134C; } .btn_e2:hover { background-color: #FF00FF; } .btn_e3:hover { background-color: #DC134C; } .btn_e4:hover { background-color: #DC134C; } .btn_e5:hover { background-color: #DC134C; } /*End of 1*/ /*My random scrawlings*/ #navigation { height:35px; width:787px; position:relative; margin:0 auto 0 auto; z-index:100; } #navmenu, #navmenu ul { padding:0; margin:0; list-style-type:none; } #navmenu { margin:0; } #navmenu li { float:left; position:relative; text-align:center; } #navmenu li a, #navmenu li a:visited { width:101px; font-size:1em; font-family:Arial; height:16px; text-decoration:none; } #navmenu li li a, #navmenu li li a:visited { display:block; width:122px; color:#fff; height:15px; text-decoration:none; z-index:100; margin-left:-1px; } #navmenu li:hover > a { background-color:; color:#fff; text-decoration:underline; } #navmenu li li:hover > a { background-color:#DC134C; color:#fff; text-decoration:underline; } #navmenu li ul { display: none; } #navmenu li:hover > ul { display: block; position: absolute; top:0; left:203px; } #navmenu > li:hover > ul { left:0; top:35px; } /*End of my random scrawling*/ And here is the HTML I'm using the create my lists Code: <div id="navigation"> <ul id="navmenu"> <li class="btn btn_home"><a>Home</a><span></span></li> <li class="btn btn_e1"><a>Element 1</a><span></span></li> <ul> <li><a>Sub 1</a></li> <li><a>Sub 2</a></li> <li><a>Sub 3</a></li> <li><a>Sub 4</a></li> </ul> <li class="btn btn_e2"><a>Element 2</a><span></span></li> <ul> <li><a>Sub 5</a></li> <li><a>Sub 6</a></li> <li><a>Sub 7</a></li> <li><a>Sub 8</a></li> <li><a>Sub 9</a></li> </ul> <li class="btn btn_e3"><a>Element 3</a><span></span></li> <li class="btn btn_e4"><a>Element 4</a><span></span></li> <li class="btn btn_e5"><a>Element 5</a><span></span></li> </ul> </div> Any help in where I've been going wrong would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dave I have 2 divs divs on a page displaying the report. On the first div, I have a form where the user can select the report options. On the second div, I simply display the options used to run the report shown on the page. Either one or the other div is shown on the page at a time. A user can click a button, which switches an inline style (style="display: none;") on the appropriate div. Now, when I print, I never want to show div #1. Easy enough, I just set up a print.css file and set display: none; for. However, I ALWAYS want div #2 to show, but I'm not sure how to handle that. I can't seem to use the same print.css file, because if the inline style is set to none for display, it doesn't show when printing. The only way it shows if if I actually have it showing on the screen when I hit the print button. Any ideas? Hopefully I am making myself clear. I use centered css layout on my site. There is a problem with IE on one page. Sometimes main layer content comes hidden but only text content. Like this: http://img351.imageshack.us/img351/5152/hidden1zu.jpg When on mouse over to the table cells text comes. Like this: http://img351.imageshack.us/img351/1853/nothidden2pe.jpg No problem with Firefox or Opera. The page url is: http://www.limk.com/sonyorumz.php Can you help me about finding the solution? Is there a way to have overflow content of a DIV hidden at the top of the DIV instead of the bottom? For instance, if I have a DIV that is 200px in height and the content within the DIV ("My top content ... my bottom content.") exceeds 200px: Code: <div style="height: 200px; overflow: hidden;"> My top content<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br> My bottom content. </div> I want the "My bottom content." to always show at the bottom of the DIV, but the "My top content..." to be hidden. I hope this makes since. Thanks! -Chris Hi Their..
