CSS - Spreading My Image Across The Browser
Im new to CSS but can some one advise how i spread my image across a who page?
At present once i have designed my web page in photoshop and flash i'am struggling to spread the image across my web browser. I seem to be having a gap to my left and right once i centre my image. Similar TutorialsHow do I spread the elements of an unordered list so they stretch across the page? This isn't all the code, but definitely all the important parts. I used the HTML to center it, since there's no way to center them in CSS (that I know of) and I tried percentages and such for borders, margins or padding. None of it works, since it's all pertaining to list items. I have no idea what to do with this. HTML Code: <div id="nav"> <center> <ul> <li><a href="#">1</a></li> <li><a href="#">2</a></li> <li><a href="#">3</a></li> <li><a href="#">4</a></li> <li><a href="#">5</a></li> <li><a href="#">6</a></li> </ul> </center> </div> <!--Close #nav--> CSS: Code: #nav { text-shadow:#000 0.2em 0.2em 0.2em; position:relative; width:100%; display:block; border: .1em solid #FFF; background-color:#000; } #nav ul { list-style-type:none; margin:0; padding:0; } #nav ul li { display:inline; } #nav a { color: white; padding: 0 .5em; text-decoration: none; /* border: .1em solid #FFF;*/ } #nav a:hover { background-color: #333; color: red; } this should be simple, but im just not finding my answer. im trying to figure out how to evenly spread several links across a fixed width. i could manually set the padding or margins for each link, but i figure there has to be a way to do it in css automagically. I haven't been able to find an answer to this anywhere and am hoping someone here can help. I'm trying to space the text inside my navigation div so that it stretches evenly accross the div rather than being centered and having a bunch of space on either side. Here's my current html... Code: <div id="navigation"> <p class="nav"><font color="#ffffff" face="verdana" size="3"> <img align="center" border="0" width="1" height="2" src="navdot.gif"><br /> Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3 | Link 4 | Link 5 </font></p> </div> And my css... Code: #navigation { width:750px; height:30px; background-image:url('navigation.gif'); background-repeat:no-repeat; margin-top:0px; } Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! EDIT: I think I got it figured out... well, it looks good on my end and I checked it across 6 larger browsers anyways. Here's the html now... Code: <div id="navigation"> <img align="center" border="0" width="1" height="2" src="navdot.gif"> <table align="center" border="0" width="750"> <tr><td width="150" valign="top"> <center><font color="#ffffff" face="verdana" size="3">Link 1</font></center> </td><td width="150" valign="top"> <center><font color="#ffffff" face="verdana" size="3">Link 2</font></center> </td><td width="150" valign="top"> <center><font color="#ffffff" face="verdana" size="3">Link 3</font></center> </td><td width="150" valign="top"> <center><font color="#ffffff" face="verdana" size="3">Link 4</font></center> </td><td width="150" valign="top"> <center><font color="#ffffff" face="verdana" size="3">Link 5</font></center> </td></tr></table> </div> I used a 1x2px image to lower the text so it wasn't sitting right up against the top of the div, then I used a table inside of it and text without using paragraph tags. There's gotta be a cleaner way of doing this though, isn't there? It looks great cross-browser, but I'm thinking there's gotta be a way to do this without a table. Hi there. I would like to show some panoramas. My panos vary in size but all are wider than one screen can show (lets say 1800x200px). Am still working with such small screens 1024px ;-) So horizontal scrolling is necessary (that's ok so far). On top and on bottom of the pano I want to show a border. The borders should be visible from far left to far right end of the pano. The upper border works already (even with fixed background image). See the attachment "css.zip": Code: <style type="text/css"> <!-- body { background-color: black; margin: 50px 0; background-image: url(stribes_01.gif); background-repeat: repeat-x; background-attachment: fixed; } img { margin: 10px; } --> </style></head> <body> <img src="eyecatcher03.jpg" width="1800" height="200" /> </body> </html> So I would like to have the bottom border work, too. It should go from far left to far right of the pano having the same distance from pano than top border does have. I know that it is possible to repeat a background image like this: Code: background-image: url(stribes_02.gif); background-repeat: repeat-x; But the image is only repeated up to the right browser border. There will be a remaining gap from browser border to far right end of pano. Is there a way to realise this? Any idea is highly appreciated. Thanks. tigercat. When I preview my page in firefox on my Mac, (via Dreamweaver's Preview function), I can see the main logo image fine. However, when I uploaded the page and image correctly, I only get a blank area. I think this is a css issue, but I can't figure it out. http://alpineec.com/TEST/index.php Any thoughts? And all my content is set to auto margin on left and right. How do I make it fix into a position and wont change during resizing or the browser? Hello, For some reason I'm having difficulty with this, I'm designing a page that needs a background image centered even when the browser is resized like on ask.com. I don't need several different background options, just one background. It seems to me it should be simple enough but I'm having one of those nights. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks, Jasontor Hi, Here's the site I'm working with: http://www.cjfusion.com I want to get that image centered on the browser window and then depending on how big the viewers screen is, the browser will cover up the left and the right. I hope that makes sense. I almost want it to be fluid, but I'm unsure how to do that. Ask questions if this doesnt make sense. Its hard to explain. -CJ Hello, I'm using jquery and the cycle plugin to cycle through a few images on my homepage inside a container. When i load the website at any browser size, it seems to do the proper thing. The problems arise when i try to make the browser bigger or smaller after that, it does funky things to the images. If you begin to scale the browser when the first image is displayed, it also seems to scale properly for that first image, but goes haywire after that. It pretty much does it in all browsers and i can't seem to figure out if it's something im not setting properly within css or if it have something to do with jquery and the cycle plugin. here's the website thus far: www.beaucoupla.com this is my first time writing code so please any help would be appreciated! I am trying to figure out how to repeat a border image, basically to repeat the div holding the wood images on this page: http://greentypeoftube.com/kc/ essentially to have the bottom expand with the user's browser window size. thanks to you for the thinking and the helping of me with it. s oh. also I am hoping for a way to show the scroll buttons only if the text [will be in another div being cropped by the content window}. is there a way to do this with css? I am working much very hard to be more with css to design than just designing it. My first post.... ok... First I would like to say THANK YOU to anyone who has time to bestow some knowledge to me on what I am sure is a highly noob-esqe situation. I would also like to say that I have thoroughly search this and other forums for my issue, unfortunately I dont think I understand CSS or any web design enough to comprehend the solutions given. I think this may require someone with the knowledge I lack to come down to my level... if you can bend that low.. and walk me thru layman term-style. Again thanks in advance for anytime spent helping out. That being said I was recently trying to jazz up my website that is hosted by a certain music community. I do a decent amount of business thru this site so I wanted to step up the interface a little and get away from using the standard page setup they give you. They do offer the option to edit CSS to construct your own for a little more customization. I jumped in, and after a few days of struggling, I got it looking how I wanted it. I was excited until I realized it looked different on almost every computer i visited the site on. My Background is fine, but the links to paypal and other content is all over the place(e.g. song player, twitter link, buttons) I have tweaked and tweaked, but have not been able to remedy this apparently common problem due to my lack of knowledge and experience. My only hope is to post the coding here and have a Smart Guy/Girl guide me in the right direction. I hope Im not asking too much guys... here goes (I know I can post my url here, how can I redirect you guys to veiw my site??) /********* SoundClick CSS Template (based on custom version Mon, Sep 28 2009) ***********/ Quote: /* general */ body {background: url((MyBGJPEGforbackground)); margin:0px;} body, div,tr,td,select, textarea, input, option {font-family:Verdana; font-size:11px;} a, a:link, a:visited {color:white; text-decoration:none;} a:hover {color:#ff0000; text-decoration:underline;} .pageFooter {clear:both; color:gray; padding:1px 0px 50px 20px;} .infoBox {width:650px; margin:50px auto; background:white; color:black; border:silver solid 1px; padding:30px; font-size:14px;} /* hardly used, its for error messages to user */ .infoBox .quotes {margin:20px; border:#4b4b4b dashed 1px; font-style:italic; padding:10px; background:;} /* main containers */ .mainTable {background: url((MainTableBGPicWentHere)) ; color:#999999; width:750px; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; text-align:center;} .mainContent {background:url(/images/siteNav/transbgblocks/black/bg_0.png); color:#999999; width:725px; float:left; overflow:hidden; margin:0px 0px 20px 5px;} /* IE6 doesnt support our preferred overflow:visible */ /* left navigation */ .navigation {background:url(/images/siteNav/transbgblocks/black/bg_0.png); color:white; width:300px; float:left; overflow:hidden; margin:10px 0px 20px 0px;} .navigation a:link, .navigation a:visited {color:#999999;} .navigation a:hover {color:#ffffff;} .navigationDivider {height:6px; line-height:6px; border-bottom:#232323 dashed 1px; margin-bottom:6px;} /* general elements */ .headline {background:transparent; color:transparent; font-weight:bold; border-bottom:transparent dashed 0px; border-top:transparent solid 0px; padding:330px 1px 50px 50px;} .headlineBig {font-size:22px; font-weight:normal;} .headlineSuppl {float:right; margin:0px 0px 0px 100px; color:#666666; font-size:11px; font-weight:normal;} /* for text/links on the right side of main headline (e.g. song count on main page) */ .headlineSuppl a:link, .headlineSuppl a:visited {color:#666666; text-decoration:none;} .headlineSuppl a:hover {color:black; text-decoration:underline;} .pageturner {background:; color:#cccccc; border:#4b4b4b solid 1px; text-align:right; padding:10px; font-size:13px; font-weight:normal;} /* pages menu (previous, next..), e.g. on music page, message board */ .pageturner .nonactive {color:#666666;} .pageturner a:link, .pageturner a:visited {color:#cccccc; text-decoration:none;} .pageturner a:hover {color:#ff0000; text-decoration:underline;} .listedPicsBox {border:#4b4b4b solid 1px; width:114px; height:160px; overflow:hidden; padding:2px 1px 4px 1px; margin:0px 4px 10px 4px; float:left; font-size:11px; text-align:center;} .listedPics {width:110px; height:125px; background-position: center center; background-repeat: no-repeat; margin:2px 0px 4px 0px; overflow:hidden} .breaker {height:1px; line-height:1px; clear:both} /* general color and font assets */ .color_supplemental {color:#666666;} /* used e.g. for song pages comments count */ .alternateBG0 {background:none;} /* used as background colors for comments */ .alternateBG1 {background:none;} /* alternate color */ /* main page (the default entry page) */ .mainContent .contHeadline {clear:left; font-size:16px; color:#cccccc; padding:1px 0px 2px 20px;} /* interview questions */ .mainContent .contText {clear:left; padding-left:15px;} .mainContent .contInterview {clear:left; padding-left:30px;} .mainContent .newsBox {clear:both; background:transparent; color:white; border:transparent solid 0px; margin:6px 20px 0px 20px; padding:100px;} /* main page: video box (different from video page) */ .videoBox_mainPage {padding:5px; margin:0px 100px 20px 100px;} .videoBox_mainPage .video {padding:5px; margin-bottom:10px;} .videoBox_mainPage .title {font-size:15px; text-align:center; margin-bottom:3px;} .videoBox_mainPage .shareLinks {float:right; padding:2px; border-bottom:#4b4b4b dashed 1px;} .videoBox_mainPage .labels {color:#666666; width:100px; padding-right:20px; text-align:right; float:left;} .videoBox_mainPage .info {padding-left:120px;} .videoBox_mainPage a:link, .videoBox_mainPage a:visited {font-size:13px; font-weight:normal; text-decoration:none;} .videoBox_mainPage a:hover {text-decoration:underline;} /* main page: upcoming shows */ .liveshowsBox {background:#cccccc; color:#000000; width:300px; margin:15px 2px 15px 10px; float:right; clear:right;} .liveshowsItems {padding:4px 0px 0px 0px; font-size:11px; clear:both;} .liveshowsBox a:link, .liveshowsBox a:visited {color:#000000; text-decoration:none;} .liveshowsBox a:hover {color:#666666; text-decoration:underline; cursorointer;} /* main page: standard song box on artist page (only this song box or the embedded player is used. However, the menu bar displays about 10 pixels lower in Firefox than it does in IE. <a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)">Link</a> I checked the margins, padding but can not seem to find a way to get the menu to display at the same position in both browsers. Any guidance is very appreciated. thanks. It seem that everytime I added the image tag, the div'x area get bigger in IE but not in Mozilla/Firefox browser. So, I thought by added the "margin-bottom:-360px;" to the div would fix it but it had an opposite effect. Meaning it worked in IE but Mozilla show a vertical scrollbar. So, does anyone know how can I make the <img> overlap one another without being stacked on one after another in height for IE if I take out the "margin-bottom: -360px;"? Thanks... Code: div.divBox1 { width: 286px; height: 359px; float: left; } div.divClearFloat { clear: both; height: 0px; /* For IE Stupidity (it added some spaces after clearing the float) */ font-size: 1pt; /* For IE Stupidity (minimum height only work with current font-size somewhere) */ } div.divDottedLineAdvertisementSeperator1 { width: 575px; height: 3px; background-color: #ff0000; font-size: 1pt; /* For IE Stupidity (minimum height only work with current font-size somewhere) */ } Code: <div class="divBox1"> <div style="margin-bottom:-360px;"> <img src="images/doctor.jpg" style="position:relative;top:0px;left:0px;z-index:2;"> <img src="images/we_help.jpg" style="position:relative;top:-360px;left:0px;z-index:1;"> </div> </div> <div class="divClearFloat"></div> <div class="divDottedLineAdvertisementSeperator1"></div> Hi guys Please help me out. This webpage should look like this: But in some browsers the photograph (bottom right hand floating DIV with background image) does not load! WHY?! Thanks! i have a web site that i am redesigning and the redesign is @ http://cometosandiego.com/weekendvisit/index.php it shows up GREAT in firefox screwed in opera and COMPLETLY out of wack in IE 6 and 7 what to do???? thanks I got it figured out. Can delete this thread! Hi! I'm relatively new at designing websites...I'm a designer...trying to jump into web. I usually use the Dreamweaver templates...and go from there. This site I've built doesn't show up at all in IE. Where'd I go wrong? Thanks for any help. I've checked out several hacks and things, but without know why it's not showing up I don't really know where to go to look for answers. Can different browsers interpret CSS differently because of the order you put things in? I have the following CSS in my website Code: div#container { background-color: #FFFFFF; border: 1px solid #FBFBFB; width: 660px; height: 250px; padding: 5px; margin-left: 50px; margin-top: 5px; } div#left { float: left; clear: right; width: 350px; height: 250px; background-color: #FF7800; } div#right { float: left; clear: right; width: 350px; height: 250px; background-color: #F3F3F3; margin-left: 5px; } and the html Code: <div id="container"> <div id="left"></div> <div id="right"></div> </div> in IE it works fine, the layout is next to each other in a box but in safari (on mac) the right hand box is position below the left hand one... You can see the site at http://www.impulsive-solutions.co.uk/isnoname/ http://warcraftpress.com/index.php (If it displays a whitepage, revisit the link again) Working on browser compatibility, and well, IE is a stubborn one, yes? For some reason, it places post areas below the right menu, as well as some spacing issues. I've checked in FireFox 3 (which I designed in), Safari, and Opera, but only IE does this issue. (IE7, I mean. I no longer care to support IE6) One other thing I see is the menu items's arrow graphic cuts off in other browsers, I'd say it has to do with the height and other specifications in the CSS, but I do make a mess to try and make something work :P The big arrow graphic (the normal) is at a height of 22, while the small (sub menu) one is 18. Both are in pixel measurements. Thanks a lot in advance for the help! You can find the stylesheet he http://warcraftpress.com/wp-content/themes/default/style.css |
