CSS - Opera Rendering Issues
Hey everyone,
The site in question is roadmasterusa.com We've got a site developed that looks acceptable in most browsers, with the exception of Opera and IE8 (though we were able to put in the modify header to roll back to IE7 rendering). The problem is the positioning of the navigation, and some of the other page elements. Now I have been unsuccessful in finding any way about this other than to not support Opera, but we don't want to miss out on that 1% of visitors. I've spent quite some time trying to figure out how to get this site to render right; now I need some expert help. I look forward to anything you suggest. -Troy Oltmanns Similar TutorialsHi guys, Maybe some of you could shed some light on this little problem. I'm currently working on a site redesign, the page in question can be found HERE. When hovering over the ZOOM button in Opera the mouseover image is partially hidden, and in one particular case (2nd ZOOM button down) after rolling off the image the mouseover image partially remains. Works fine in Firefox and Safari (been unable to test in IE yet) I'm guessing the problem comes down to z-index but my understanding of it is pretty poor. Any insight would be much appreciated (yes the coding's messy... it's a work in progress ) Thanks! Hello. This is probably not good practice but I have two problems arising with the same piece of code. Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en"> <head> <title>My site</title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" /> <style type="text/css"> body { font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 0.8em; background: #cfcf00; margin: 0; /* it's good practice to zero the margin and padding of the body element to account for differing browser defaults */ padding: 0; padding-bottom: 2em; text-align: center; /* this centers the container in IE 5* browsers. The text is then set to the left aligned default in the #container selector */ color: #303030; } /* end body */ #logo_search { width: 100%; min-width: 957px; max-height: 79px; padding: 32px 0 0 0; border: 0; margin: auto; overflow: hide; background: #ffffff; } /* end #logo_search */ #logo_container { width: 40%; float: left; background: #ffffff; text-align: right; border: 0; border-bottom: 1px solid #ffffff; height: 51px; padding: 0; margin: auto; } /* end #logo_container */ #base { clear: both; padding-top: 1px; border-top: 1px solid #ffffff; border-bottom: 1px solid #ffffff; width: 100%; background: #c0c0c0; } /* end #base */ #main_block { background: #ff0000; margin: auto; text-align: left; width: 955px; } /* end #main_block */ #main_content { background: #ffffff; border-left: 1px solid #ff0000; padding-top: 1em; padding-bottom: 1em; border-right: 1px solid #ff0000; } /* end #main_content */ #top_main_content ul { float: left; list-style-type: none; border-spacing: 0; padding: 0; text-align: right; border-top: 1px solid #00ff00; height: 243px; width: 266px; } /* end #top_main_content #links_table */ #top_main_content ul li { vertical-align: middle; color: #0000ff; border-bottom: 1px solid #00ff00; } /* end #top_main_content #links_table td */ #top_main_content ul li a { line-height: 26px; padding-right: 1em; display: block; color: #0000ff; width: 259px; } /* end #top_main_content ul li a */ #top_main_content ul li a:hover { background: #cfcf00; color: #000000; } /* end #top_main_content ul li a:hover */ #top_main_content img { border-bottom: 1px solid #00ff00; border-top: 1px solid #00ff00; margin-top: 12px; text-align: right; vertical-align: top; } /* end #top_main_content img */ </style> </head> <body> <div id="logo_search"> <div id="logo_container"> </div> </div> <div id="base"> <div id="main_block"> <div id="main_content"> <div id="top_main_content"> <ul> <li><a href="#">Link 1</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link 2</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link 3</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link 4</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link 5</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link 6</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link 7</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link 8</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link 9</a></li> </ul> <img src="#" alt="" id="main_graphic" height="243" width="687"/> </div> </div> </div> </div> </body> </html> Problem 1 (Opera rendering): Opera (and only Opera from what I've noticed) is extended the border for the menu options into the side border. How can I eliminate this behavior? I added a margin-left: 1px to the menu and that will render it correctly in Opera but have an extra 1px of whitespace everywhere else. Problem 2: I'm trying to position this menu such that it lines up exactly with an image 243px high. One question I have is that if I add a 1px top and bottom border to an image that is 243px high, would that object still be 243px high or now 245px high? Also, I want to indent the menu options slightly so that they aren't exactly next to the image but I still need the entire bar to serve as a link. What would be the best approach to line up these objects. I can sort of do it with margin-top but I'm sure that's not the best way to go. Edited to add: Problem 3: The menu does not align with the left edge of the main section in IE and only IE. What can I do to fix this? Well, the subject says it all. http://www.virtual-business-options...est/index1.html. On a page I'm developing</a>, I have the three column layout. In IE, Net, FF, it appears fine. But Opera 6 (No folks, I still haven't upgraded!!!) loads the background image completely messed up. But, if you scroll down, it appears fine, and if you scroll back up, it appears fine...oh boy! I'm wondering if this possibly has something to do with the Flash embed. The validator is pointing out several problems with the embed element and, since I'm not familiar with Flash, I don't know how to validate it (or even if it can be). Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks. Tim Hi guys, I am in the process of refreshing my site however cannot seem to figure out a specific iOS rendering issue. On iOS devices (I have tested on an iPad and a iPhone 4), the menu on my website displays on the first visit, but then disappears. I cannot reproduce this on a regular desktop browser, but can reproduce the rendering issue on the iOS simulator. The CSS file is located here and the corresponding validator result link is here. This is what it looks like on first visit: And this is what happens when I refresh the page: I'm really at a loss to understand where I might be going wrong, and would be grateful for any assistance. The CSS rules for the menu specifically a Code: /* !Navigation */ #menu {background: #393 url(../images/menu.png) no-repeat !important; width: 744px; height: 40px; position: relative; margin: 170px 0 0 0; padding: 0;} #menu li {float: left;} #menu li a, #help li a {position: absolute; margin: 0; padding: 0; display: block; text-indent: -9999px; overflow: hidden;} #menu li a {height: 40px;} /* Normal State */ li#home a {left: 0; width: 79px;} li#about a {left: 84px; width: 75px;} li#journal a {left: 164px; width: 89px;} li#origami a {left: 258px; width: 97px;} li#stuff a {left: 360px; width: 65px;} li#links a {left: 430px; width: 65px;} li#contact a {left: 500px; width: 93px;} /* Hover & Current State */ li#home a:hover, #snkhan_home li#home a {background: url(../images/menu.png) 0 -40px;} li#about a:hover, #snkhan_about li#about a {background: url(../images/menu.png) -84px -40px;} li#journal a:hover, #snkhan_journal li#journal a {background: url(../images/menu.png) -164px -40px;} li#origami a:hover, #snkhan_origami li#origami a {background: url(../images/menu.png) -258px -40px;} li#stuff a:hover,#snkhan_stuff li#stuff a {background: url(../images/menu.png) -360px -40px;} li#links a:hover, #snkhan_links li#links a {background: url(../images/menu.png) -430px -40px;} li#contact a:hover, #snkhan_contact li#contact a {background: url(../images/menu.png) -500px -40px;} Any suggestions welcome! Saj Hey everyone, My page renders correctly in Safara, Firefox and Internet Explorer. However Opera 9.27 causes a bit of concern. The stylesheet is as follows Code: html, body, h1, h2, h3, h4, ul, li { margin: 0; padding: 0; } h1 img { display: block; } img { border: 0px none; } a { color: #464544; } a:hover { color: #FFA405; } .left { float: left; } .right { float: right; } .clear { clear: both; } body { background: #ECF4F7; text-align: center; font: 11px verdana, arial, sans-serif; color: #695F4C; padding-bottom: 10px; } /** layout **/ #wrapper { text-align: left; margin: 37px auto; width: 839px; background: #ffffff; position: relative; padding: 0; } #header { background: #D9D1BC url('images/logo.jpg') no-repeat; height: 192px } #nav { background: #4B5360; position: absolute; top: 153px; left: 339px; width: 499px; height: 20px; padding: 9px 0px; text-align: center; margin: 0; } #nav li { list-style: none; display: inline; color: #fff; } #nav a { text-decoration: none; color: #fff; } #body { background-color:#FFF; } #postheadb { font: 10px verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; color: #FFFAF0; float: right; width: 500px; background: #2dbaa7; } #postheadb .inner { padding: 6px 12px; width/**/:/**/ 501px; Height/**/:/**/ 10px; } #postheadab p { margin: 0.9em 0; } #posthead { font: 10px verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; color: #FFFAF0; float: right; width: 839px; background: #2dbaa7; } #posthead .inner { padding: 6px 12px; } #posthead p { margin: 0.9em 0; } #contentb{ font: 12px verdana, arial, sans-serif; color: #cad10e; float: right; background: #40789d; } #contentb .inner { padding: 6px 12px; width/**/:/**/ 476px; Height/**/:/**/ 52px; } #contentb p { margin: 0.9em 0; } #content{ font: 12px verdana, arial, sans-serif; color: #cad10e; float: right; width: 839px; background: #40789d; } #content .inner { padding: 12px 12px; } #content p { margin: 0.9em 0; } #copyright { text-align: center; background: #030303; font-size: 9px; padding: 2px; width/**/:/**/ 92.8em; Height/**/:/**/ 3em; } input { color: #FFFAF0; background: #40789d; vertical-align: middle; } .email input { position:absolute; left: 40px; top: 20px; color: #781351; width: 225px; background: #fee3ad; } #sidebar { margin-bottom:0; float: left; background: #D3D3D3; padding: 395px 169px; Height/**/:/**/ 70px; } .videobar { position:absolute; left: 20px; top: 200px; height: 600px; width: 300px; float: right; padding: 10px; } .password input { position:absolute; left: 40px; top: 60px; color: #781351; width: 225px; background: #fee3ad; } #login{ font: 10px verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; color: #FFFAF0; float: right; width: 839px; background: #2dbaa7; } #searchTerm{ width: 125px; height: 15px; } #submitsearch{ height: 22px; } #login .inner { padding: 90px 12px; } #login p { margin: 0.9em 0; } .submit input{ position:absolute; left: 40px; top: 90px; width: 55px; height: 22px; padding: 0; } fieldset { border: 1px solid #781351; position: absolute; left: 300px; height: 130px; top: 215px; width: 300px; } legend { background-color: #ffa20c; border: 1px solid #781351; line-height: 1.5em; position: relative; top: -0.75em; } The website displayed in Firefox can be seen here Firefox and Opera here Opera many thanks, Doug Right up front, here's the CSS/markup I am concerned about: http://www.triple-bypass.net/testpage.htm http://www.triple-bypass.net/testpage.css It consists of a simple div with a colored background, and a couple anchor elements sitting on top of it. The anchors are treated as blocks, making this a nice little menu. The problem is that multiple platforms are displaying the anchor boxes in different places. Right now, it looks fine in Firefox 1.5.0.6 on WindowsXP. The anchor boxes stick up about 2 pixels in Firefox 1.5.0.6 on Mac OSX Tiger. And the anchor boxes stick down about 3 pixels in Firefox 1.5.0.6 on Linux. Here's a screenshot from Firefox on Linux: URL (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.6) Gecko/20060808 Fedora/1.5.0.6-2.fc5 Firefox/1.5.0.6 pango-text) My guess is that each platform is setting a different baseline for the anchor text, and growing the padding box around it from there. The "top" value that works on Windows, therefore, does not work on OSX or Linux. The simplest 'solution' would seem to be "Forget Linux and OSX, they're of no concern in the Windows world". However, as an alternative OS advocate, this is something I cannot do. I'm not too concerned about supporting other browsers, but supporting one browser across platforms is important to me. So has anyone had any experience with this? Is there a way to fix it? Or a hack to get around it? here is the site http://142.177.157.241:8080/bikers/ Well, I have some work to do about opera and IE since they are slow in the browsers making or the standards compliance. Even Opera8 doesn't suport my site and I think that was just released not too long ago. I think I'm going to be changing my browser of choice from Firefox to Netscape 8. I have the beta right now and it looks awesome and has all the functionality of Firefox I want plus it makes it easy to change between IE and netscape without actualy going to IE to see how my site looks. Two birds with one stone. I'm using background images on a <span> tag. Code: .thespan { display: -moz-inline-box; display: inline-block; height: 16px; width: 16px; margin: 2px; /* using longhand on purpose, since other classes override bits later */ background-image: url(../img/iw_ds_sprite.gif); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: 0px 0px; } And already there's an issue. IE (even 6!) FF2 and 3, and Safari all do what I expect. However, Opera is off by about 40 pixels. There is a shell around the span - changing this shell's class makes the internal background-position change, like so: Code: .theshell .thespan { background-position: 0px -40px; } This actually works, except it doesn't. Opera, having been wrong in the first place, is now wrong by the same amount - it jumps to -80px. I've been pulling my hair out on this...I can't believe that it works in IE6 but not Opera! Any help is greatly appreciated. Tim I cannot figure this out. I've tried adding clear: both in several places, I've tried overflow: hidden and I've tried cursing. Nothing works! How can this be fixed so that in IE6 the divs are not staggered vertically?? Code: <div style="height: 38px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; width: 140px;"> <div style="float: left; height: 38px; width: 38px;"><img style="border: 1px solid #444444; vertical-align: middle" src="http://www.diversifieddesigns.com/GRAPHICS/Spacer.gif" alt="" width="38" height="38" border="0"></div> <div style="float: right; height: 38px; width: 102px;">copy</a><br>copy</a></div> </div> <div style="height: 38px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; width: 140px;"> <div style="float: left; height: 38px; width: 38px;"><img style="border: 1px solid #444444; vertical-align: middle" src="http://www.diversifieddesigns.com/GRAPHICS/Spacer.gif" alt="" width="38" height="19" border="0"></div> <div style="float: right; height: 38px; width: 102px;"><img style="border: 1px solid #444444; vertical-align: middle" src="http://www.diversifieddesigns.com/GRAPHICS/Spacer.gif" alt="" width="38" height="8" border="0"></div> </div> Greetings everyone! I've been working on the following page for a couple of days now, and it looks fine in Safari and Firefox, but all my CSS fail in IE. I don't know what the problem is. Feel free to view the page at the following url http://www.netunification.com/demo/ I spoke with a friend and he speculates IE is having problems with the float command. I'm not so sure of this because I used the same CSS techniques while building the following site (http://www.the904.com/demo/). The904 page renders perfectly in IE and I can't figure out what the difference is between the pages. I thought I used the same concept with both pages. I've been trouble shooting the problem for a couple of days now, but I haven't had any luck. Can please someone take a look at my net u page (http://www.netunification.com/demo/) and suggest a solution Thanks in advance for any/all assistance. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated! Walt Hello, I am using ASP.NET to create a web application. I HAVE to use a master page which means that I do not have complete control over the rendering. The trick is, the master page defines a menu at the top of the page. I need to create a table that dynamically fills the contents of the REMAINDER of the screen. If there is any overflow, I want to scroll the contents. Does anyone know how I can have the table fill the REMAINDER of the screen? I can nest DIVs and such once I have that outer table. Thank you! Crystal Hi guys, pretty new to CSS layout, and recently created a site for my girlfriend. I used 960 grid system to handle my layout css, and it renders perfectly in safari/FF/IE7+... after I installed IE Tester, i realized that IE6 wasnt rendering properly. The menu and z-index stuff arent appearing correctly. If anyone can have a quick look and let me know where my code is causing issues it would be a great help. I'm not allowed to post the URL, as im a new user, but I guess I can send through PM if you want to have a look? Thanks a bunch. Hey, I came across this forum and hopefully somebody can help me. Here is my website: http://www.jmuelectricmotorcycle.tk When the page is in firefox, If you page zoom out, the navbar goes under the content instead of staying on the right. I think it has something to do with padding and the sidebar not having enough room so it drops down. When I set the content to 1005 instead of 1000, it works, but there's a giant 5 pixel gap between my side bar and my content container. Also, does anybody know how to style called data from ssi.php in SMF forums? I want my login boxes to look like my main page. Thanks. Here is my css: Code: html { font: normal 12px verdana, arial; background-color: #000 } body { text-align: center } #fw-container { margin: 0 auto; width: 1000px; text-align: left } .hasSidebar #fw-container { width: 1000px; } a, a:visited { text-decoration: none; } a:hover { text-decoration: underline; } /* --- Header --- */ #fw-head { position: relative; height: 196px; background: #242424; } #fw-title { font: bold 26px verdana; letter-spacing: -1px; position: absolute; top: 20px; left: 20px; padding: 0; margin: 0; z-index: 10; } #fw-title a, #fw-title a:visited, #fw-title a:hover { color: #fff; } .fw-logo { width: 760px; height: 196px; position: absolute; } .hasSidebar .fw-logo { width: 1000px; } /* --- Navigation --- */ #fw-mainnavwrap { background: #242424; padding: 10px 20px; font-family: arial; font-weight: normal; border-top: 1px solid #000; border-bottom: 1px solid #000; } #fw-mainnavwrap ul { margin: 0; padding: 0; background: transparent; list-style-type: none; } #fw-mainnavwrap li { margin: 0px 15px 0px 0px; display: inline; } /* --- Content --- */ #fw-bigcontain { width: 760px; float: left; } .fw-paragraph { background: #242424 url('../Waveform/img/bg-p.gif') repeat-x top left; border-bottom: 1px solid #000; padding: 15px 20px 10px; overflow: hidden; } .fw-title { margin: 0px 0px 10px; font: 18px verdana; color: #fff; } .fw-text { margin-bottom: 10px; } /* --- Sidebar stuff --- */ .hasSidebar #fw-sidebar { width: 239px; float: right; font-size: 12px; clear: right; border-left: 1px solid #000; } #fw-sidebar .fw-title a, #fw-sidebar .fw-title a:visited, #fw-sidebar .fw-title a:hover { color: #fff; text-decoration: none; } #fw-sidebar .fw-title { font-size: 1.3em; font-weight: normal; } /* --- Footer --- */ #fw-footer { font: normal 10px verdana, sans-serif; background: #242424; margin: 0px; padding: 11px 0px 1px; color: #999; clear: both; width: 760px; } .fw-footertext { background: #161616; border-bottom: 1px solid #000; border-top: 1px solid #000; margin: 0px; padding: 6px 0px 6px 20px; } Here's my page: dev.papatime.rewards.openi.com/rewards09/ NOTE: As new member I am not allowed to post a link, so please add h-t-t-p:// Looks great in FF, Chrome, and Safari. In IE8 the grey box at the top of the right hand column is not aligned to the top, throwing off the whole page. If you have the border-top:none; then the right border is exactly 1px higher than the left border. Have anyone experienced the same problem ? - Emil I have run into a problem in 2 of my pages in IE they Render fine in Firefox but in IE you cannot see the top part of the text and in some you don't incounter this problem. but when you refresh page the Title and author and the top text will not show in IE just disapper and it will show up when you Scroll or Highlight the text. I been trying to figure out this problem for quite sometime now. The First Page Second Page Code: .top_article_pic { float:left; margin: 0 9px 0 0; } div#articles_bg { width:850px; background:#2A475F; padding:24px; } div#articles_page { background:#FFF; border:1px solid #000; padding:12px; } div#articles_page2 { height:800px; background:#FFF; border:1px solid #000; padding:12px; } span.h1 { font-family:Arial,Verdana,Sans-serif; font-size:2em; color:#2A475F; font-weight:bold; } span.author { font-family:Arial,Verdana,Sans-serif; font-size:.9em; font-style:italic; color:#2A475F; } div#articles_page p.main_article { margin:18px 0 0 0; font-family:Arial,Verdana,Sans-serif; font-size:.8em; color:#000; } div#articles_page p.main_article_p{ width:500px; margin:18px 17px 0 0; font-family:Arial,Verdana,Sans-serif; font-size:.8em; color:#000; float:left; background:#FFF; } img.right_thumb { border:1px solid; } p.click_enlarge { font:.8em Arial,Verdana,Sans-serif; color:#2A475F; } div#articles_page p.main_article_p2{ margin:12px 0 0 0; font-family:Arial,Verdana,Sans-serif; font-size:.8em; color:#000; background:#FFF; } img.right_float { float:right; margin:0 0 0 15px; border:1px solid #000; } p#left_article { margin:10px 0 0 0; color:#000; font:.8em Arial,Verdana,Sans-serif; } p.article2 { margin:9px 0 0 0; text-align:justify; font:.8 Arial,Verdana,Sans-serif; width:530px; font:.8em Arial,Verdana,Sans-serif; } div.right_pic { width:161px; padding:10px; font:.8em Arial,Verdana,Sans-serif; color:#2A475F; margin:0 10px 0 0; float:left; background:#ccc; border:1px solid #000; } Thanks in Advance |
