CSS - Div Positioning - Different Position When Previewed In Any Browser.
Even though the text in the div is positioned where I want it to be in DW, it doesn't display correctly in the browser.
Here's my screenshot: img367.imageshack.us/img367/8152/picture2on5.th.png add http:// to the front Here's my CSS: @charset "UTF-8"; /* CSS Document for index.html*/ body{ background-color: white; } #index_bg{ background-image: url('index.gif'); background-position: top center; background-repeat: no-repeat; width: 473px; height: 153px; margin: 0 auto; overflow: hidden; } #index_text_welcome{ margin-top: 15px; margin-left: 15px; width: 180px; height: 30px; color: #999; font: x-small Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; } #index_text_enter{ margin-top: 10px; margin-left: 180px; width: 110px; color: #666; font: small Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 20px; } #index_text_download{ margin-top: 30px; margin-left: 15px; width: 75px; color: #CCC; font: x-small Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; } #index_footer{ background-image: url('index_footer.gif'); background-position: top center; background-repeat: no-repeat; width: 700px; height: 50px; margin-top: 200px; clear: both; float: none; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: auto; margin-left: auto; z-index: auto; } #index_footer_text{ margin: auto; margin-top: 12px; margin-left: 250px; width: 250px; color: #CCC; font: x-small Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left; vertical-align: baseline; } a{ text-decoration: none; color:#666 } a:hover{ color: #333; } p.s i'm in a hurry n i'll edit this post later..i just want to see replies first Similar TutorialsHi: I'd like to ask you why my image sit in different position from IE and Firefox browser. my code as following; PHP Code: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd"> <html lang="en"> <head> <style type="text/css"> #image{ position: absolute; right: 18px; top: -10px; padding:0; border: 2px dashed red; } #img1{ position: relative; padding: 0; border: 2px dashed #32ed19; margin:auto; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="image"> <img id="img1" src="firstcar.JPG" alt="myfirstcar"> </div> </body> </html> I'm trying to have the contact information for a site to always appear in a right div next to the main content div. I would like it to always appear in the top right of the div, no matter how much the user scrolls down. This way, the information is always visible. I tried experimenting with background images in certain divs, but Firefox (but not IE) was having trouble displaying it the way I wanted. I've seen it in action before, so I'll post a URL if i can find where. Hi all, After being away from the forums for some while I picked up the "webdesign-bug" again (it's raining during my summer holidays) but I'm having some troubles catching up with all new techniques/syntaxes at the moment. I did have a look at some tutorial sites and searched the forum for similar problems but somehow it's a bit overwhelming and I didn't find the solution I'm looking for yet. I do hope I didn't overlook something very basic or ask a frequently asked question (sorry then ) The goal I'm trying to make a (css-based) site with a central column with all 'normal' data. Below this central column I'd like to place some additional layers which are (partly) hidden underneath the main layer and which show themselves if you move with your mouse over the visible parts. The idea behind it is to create some 'desktop' where you have all kinds of things laying on eachother (like additional pieces of paper, some photographs, some money, ...). As an extra feature there would be another layer which makes sure there's a shadow from the 'main column' on the items below it. (Hope this is clear?) What I did so far To achieve this I thought I'd use different layers with different z-indexes and position them over and underneath eachother. So far I have the following code: html4strict Code: Original - html4strict Code <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>Test Layers</title> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" /> <link href="style.css" type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" /> <script type="text/javascript"> function show( obj ) { bla = document.getElementById( obj ); bla.style.zIndex += 10; } function hide( obj ) { bla = document.getElementById( obj ); bla.style.zIndex -= 10; } </script> </head> <body> <!-- CONTAINER --> <div id="container"> <h2 class="title">Quick Links</h2> <!-- SUBCONTENT --> <div class="subcontent1" id="subcontent1" onMouseOver="show('subcontent1');" onMouseOut="hide('subcontent1');"> Subtext1<br/><img src="/images/1pix.gif" width="400px" height="400px" alt=""/> </div> <div class="subcontent2" id="subcontent2" onMouseOver="show('subcontent2');" onMouseOut="hide('subcontent2');"> Subtext2<br/><img src="/images/1pix.gif" width="400px" height="400px" alt=""/> </div> <!-- CONTENT --> <div class="content_shadow"> <div class="content"> <h1 class="title">Site Title</h1> <div class="content_white"> <h2 class="title">Content Title</h2> Maintext1 </div> </div> </div> </div> </body> </html> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> css Code: Original - css Code * { margin: 0; padding: 0; } body { background-color: orange; } h1.title { display: none; } h2.title { display: none; } /******************************************************************** * CONTAINER ********************************************************************/ #container { border: solid 1px black; margin: 0 auto; width: 1000px; z-index: 1; /* background-color: lightgray;*/ /* filter: alpha(opacity=50);*/ } /******************************************************************** * SUB CONTENT ********************************************************************/ /* http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms530301.aspx http://www.w3schools.com/htmldom/prop_style_clear.asp http://www.dynamicsitesolutions.com/css/layout-techniques/ */ #container .subcontent1 { background-color: lime; float: left; position: relative; top: 100px; width: 400px; z-index: 2; /* display: inline;*/ /* height: 200px;*/ /* left: 0px;*/ } #container .subcontent2 { background-color: lime; display: block; float: right; position: relative; top: 200px; width: 400px; z-index: 3; /* display: block;*/ /* height: 200px;*/ } /******************************************************************** * MAIN CONTENT ********************************************************************/ #container .content_shadow { background-color: gray; display: block; margin: 0 auto; opacity: .75; position: relative; top: 0px; width: 850px; z-index: 8; } #container .content { clear: none; margin: 0 auto; width: 800px; z-index: 9; } #container .content_white { background-color: white; display: block; height: 800px; margin: 0 auto; position: relative; top: 0px; width: 100%; z-index: 10; } * { The problem(s) Besides the (css)code probably being sloppy (and redundant at points?!?) since I experimented a lot with adding and removing of position-tags, floating-tags, etc etc.. it still fails to do what I'm aiming for. As can be seen on the attached screenshot most of it seems to be working (at least in FF2) (I had my mouse over the 2nd subcontent-layer btw) but the maintext1 won't start at the left of it's layer but instead starts on a x-coordinate where the 1st subcontent-layer finishes Can somebody point me to what I'm doing wrong? Also, if somebody has a relevant tutorial I'd appreciate it as well since I obviously need some extra exercise with this stuff (working on it already btw but you never know if there's another good one) Thanks for any help and if something isn't clear I'll try to explain it further! Hi all, I have a webpage that creates a dynamic set of tables (2) based on information from MySQL. The problem is, I have a footer graphic that is positioned relative to the table depth (so it sits nicely underneath no matter how deep the table gets). On my pc and browser (IE 6.028) it works fine when the footer include sits just before the </div> statement for the content of the page. But on another pc, same IE version, the footer graphic aligns itself with the second table and overwrites it. I've tried all manner of things to get it to work, but no joy. Right now I have added another quick CSS class to hardcode it to a specific height. Is there anyone who can explain why 2 identical browsers display 2 different results (I have cleared the cache) Ben i current have the following css layout applies to a div on my webpage Code: #builds { position:relative; left:17px; padding-top: 125px; padding-bottom: 55px; } this gives me the crrect positioning in firefox and google chrome however when i try and load it in ie the positioning is totally wrong. i have tried using the Code: margin: 0px auto 0 auto; value as thi div is centerd within another however then this works in ie and not firefox or google chrome. does anyone have any ideas of anything that will work for all browsers? or even just ie, firefox and google chrome Regards, Jamie As a web designer I am usually able to debug any css issues myself (as it should be, lol). However, I have run into a problem with two browsers rendering differently that I cannot figure out. If you have a look at the following link in both chrome and safari, you will see the number of views is positioned differently in both. http://www.linkpast.com/profile/250/peterthomas/ Any idea as to what is causing this and how to fix? Hi everyone, I've been fixing my blog's CSS issues, and managed to figure out everything expect for 1 thing: If you re-size the browser's window or use CTRL+mouse scroll to zoom in/out, you will notice that the nav menu doesn't follow the rest of the layout, but gets positioned on its own somehow. URL : howtohollywoodvideo dot com Here's my CSS for the layout. Header Logo Nav Menu #header { background: url(images/header-bg.jpg) bottom left repeat-x; width: 100%; float: left; } #header-left { /* For the Logo */ width: 490px; float: left; padding: 5px 0 5px 0; #navigation { width: 100%; float: left; color: #fff font-color: #fff; font-size: 18px; font-family: Verdana; } What is the solution for my problem? I tried position: properties, but nothing could make the menu get re-sized the same way as the rest of the layout. For my website at btccaction.co.uk I have chosen a CSS menu at the top as the ideal solution. However I'm having some problems positioning it so that the menu is in the same position in both Firefox and Internet explorer, and on various screen sizes. Does anyone have any tips for me here regarding positioning elements such as this so that they appear in the same position no matter what the operating system variables? For reference I'm using the code from he http://www.cssplay.co.uk/menus/ultimate.html Any help kindly appreciated. Andy I'm having a few related problems... 1. I want the Flash picture slideshow centered vertically and horizontally in its div id="flashbox", when viewed in IE 6 & 7. 2. Also when viewed in IE 7 the graphic buttons in the div id="topright" are overlapping text in the div id="rightcolumn" 3. And finally, the the graphic buttons in the div id="topright" do not fill up their space at the bottom when viewed in IE 6 & 7. Any ideas on any of these issues is much appreciated. Thank you in advance. The link to the page in question is: http://www.oharenoise.org/new/index.htm http://www.testers.info/webdesign/viva/aktuelles/ Both boxes in the centre are placed inside a table cell and are positioned via a <div> Tag using "position:relative": Code: .parent { left: auto; top: auto; position: relative; } basically everything works fine but when you're using Internet Explorer and resize the page vertically (horizontally works fine) the boxes behave like they're positioned static. What declarations do I need to write in my style sheet to make the boxes stay in their table cell? P.S.: I already searched the web for about 2 hours on this topic. Hi Everyone I have created a design in CSS and HTML but it appears differently in all of the browsers that I have tested it on can anyone take a look and tell me where I am goin wrong? Best Justin I'm new to CSS layouts, and being a relic who was always happy using tables, it's causing me some headaches! My latest conundrum involves trying to align a row of text to the bottom of an otherwise empty div. Here is my attempt, using colors for illustration only. (This is of course only a simplified version of my design, so while the "outer" DIV might look superfluous it has to be there. In my real design it is wider and contains three DIVs side by side - "box3" being just one of them.) Code: <html> <head> <style type="text/css"> #outer { position: absolute; float: left; width: 228px; height: 196px; margin-top: 0px; } #box3 { float:left; width:228px; height:196px; background-color: green; text-align:right; display: table; #position: relative; overflow: hidden; font-weight:bold; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="outer"> <div id="box3"> <div style=" #position: absolute; #top: 50%;display: table-cell; "> <div style=" #position: relative; #top: -50%; background-color: yellow;"> <p style="bottom:0;right:0;position:absolute; background-color: red;"> some <i>text goes here</i> </p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </body> </html> It looks fine in Firefox and Chrome, even if I don't quite understand why the text is elevated slightly from the bottom - that's okay. But in Internet Explorer, the text is nearer the top, and squashed to the right-hand side so that it's forced to wrap onto multiple lines. The forum won't let me post an image so see if you can decipher this URL: ht tp :// i49 .tiny pic. com /j8znti.png Can anyone help me adjust the code so that it displays in IE the same way as in Firefox and Chrome? I'd really like to understand why it's so different and how to prevent a similar problem in future. Many thanks! greetings. i have a small problem. i have a relatively positioned layer and an absolutely postioned layer. i want the rel layer to appear visually below the absolute layer. i'm not referring to z-index. simply i have a header layer and content layer. the header is absolute and the content is relative, BUT IE6 is demanding that in my code, i put the content first and header second. also if I drop the width property from the content/relative layer IE6 will allow me to have the absolute layer ontop of the relative layer in my markup. examples to be viewed in IE6 win. appears proper but was coded backwards Page appears correct, Header on top, content below BUT in the code the layers are in the wrong order. Coded in correct order but margin ignored Here the layers are coded with top layer first and bottom layer second. IE drops the top margin of the content layer and rams it to the top of the page. THIS IS THE PROBLEM Coded in correct order but i dropped the width attribute In this example the layers are coded in the proper order and they display properly but only if i remove the width attribute from the relatively positioned layer. i would appreciate any help. the page i'm working on is much more complex so although i can get both browsers to display properly, i don't like having the code for my navigation at the bottom of the page. thanks alot! carl I have having issues with IE displaying my page wrong. The page is http://]http://tampabay-online.org/cetr/about.php (or any page within that site) and the css can be found at http://tampabay-online.org/cetr/cetr.css It displays fine in Firefox and Opera but IE makes the content class lower from the top than the #right navigation bar (they should both be 20 pixels form the top) Any help much appreciated. Code: .content { position:relative; width:320px; margin-left: 125px; margin-top: 20px; border:1px solid black; background-color:white; padding:10px; z-index:3; } #right { position:absolute; width:200px; top:20px; left:500px; border:1px solid black; background-color:white; padding:10px; z-index:1; } My first post.... ok... First I would like to say THANK YOU to anyone who has time to bestow some knowledge to me on what I am sure is a highly noob-esqe situation. I would also like to say that I have thoroughly search this and other forums for my issue, unfortunately I dont think I understand CSS or any web design enough to comprehend the solutions given. I think this may require someone with the knowledge I lack to come down to my level... if you can bend that low.. and walk me thru layman term-style. Again thanks in advance for anytime spent helping out. That being said I was recently trying to jazz up my website that is hosted by a certain music community. I do a decent amount of business thru this site so I wanted to step up the interface a little and get away from using the standard page setup they give you. They do offer the option to edit CSS to construct your own for a little more customization. I jumped in, and after a few days of struggling, I got it looking how I wanted it. I was excited until I realized it looked different on almost every computer i visited the site on. My Background is fine, but the links to paypal and other content is all over the place(e.g. song player, twitter link, buttons) I have tweaked and tweaked, but have not been able to remedy this apparently common problem due to my lack of knowledge and experience. My only hope is to post the coding here and have a Smart Guy/Girl guide me in the right direction. I hope Im not asking too much guys... here goes (I know I can post my url here, how can I redirect you guys to veiw my site??) /********* SoundClick CSS Template (based on custom version Mon, Sep 28 2009) ***********/ Quote: /* general */ body {background: url((MyBGJPEGforbackground)); margin:0px;} body, div,tr,td,select, textarea, input, option {font-family:Verdana; font-size:11px;} a, a:link, a:visited {color:white; text-decoration:none;} a:hover {color:#ff0000; text-decoration:underline;} .pageFooter {clear:both; color:gray; padding:1px 0px 50px 20px;} .infoBox {width:650px; margin:50px auto; background:white; color:black; border:silver solid 1px; padding:30px; font-size:14px;} /* hardly used, its for error messages to user */ .infoBox .quotes {margin:20px; border:#4b4b4b dashed 1px; font-style:italic; padding:10px; background:;} /* main containers */ .mainTable {background: url((MainTableBGPicWentHere)) ; color:#999999; width:750px; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; text-align:center;} .mainContent {background:url(/images/siteNav/transbgblocks/black/bg_0.png); color:#999999; width:725px; float:left; overflow:hidden; margin:0px 0px 20px 5px;} /* IE6 doesnt support our preferred overflow:visible */ /* left navigation */ .navigation {background:url(/images/siteNav/transbgblocks/black/bg_0.png); color:white; width:300px; float:left; overflow:hidden; margin:10px 0px 20px 0px;} .navigation a:link, .navigation a:visited {color:#999999;} .navigation a:hover {color:#ffffff;} .navigationDivider {height:6px; line-height:6px; border-bottom:#232323 dashed 1px; margin-bottom:6px;} /* general elements */ .headline {background:transparent; color:transparent; font-weight:bold; border-bottom:transparent dashed 0px; border-top:transparent solid 0px; padding:330px 1px 50px 50px;} .headlineBig {font-size:22px; font-weight:normal;} .headlineSuppl {float:right; margin:0px 0px 0px 100px; color:#666666; font-size:11px; font-weight:normal;} /* for text/links on the right side of main headline (e.g. song count on main page) */ .headlineSuppl a:link, .headlineSuppl a:visited {color:#666666; text-decoration:none;} .headlineSuppl a:hover {color:black; text-decoration:underline;} .pageturner {background:; color:#cccccc; border:#4b4b4b solid 1px; text-align:right; padding:10px; font-size:13px; font-weight:normal;} /* pages menu (previous, next..), e.g. on music page, message board */ .pageturner .nonactive {color:#666666;} .pageturner a:link, .pageturner a:visited {color:#cccccc; text-decoration:none;} .pageturner a:hover {color:#ff0000; text-decoration:underline;} .listedPicsBox {border:#4b4b4b solid 1px; width:114px; height:160px; overflow:hidden; padding:2px 1px 4px 1px; margin:0px 4px 10px 4px; float:left; font-size:11px; text-align:center;} .listedPics {width:110px; height:125px; background-position: center center; background-repeat: no-repeat; margin:2px 0px 4px 0px; overflow:hidden} .breaker {height:1px; line-height:1px; clear:both} /* general color and font assets */ .color_supplemental {color:#666666;} /* used e.g. for song pages comments count */ .alternateBG0 {background:none;} /* used as background colors for comments */ .alternateBG1 {background:none;} /* alternate color */ /* main page (the default entry page) */ .mainContent .contHeadline {clear:left; font-size:16px; color:#cccccc; padding:1px 0px 2px 20px;} /* interview questions */ .mainContent .contText {clear:left; padding-left:15px;} .mainContent .contInterview {clear:left; padding-left:30px;} .mainContent .newsBox {clear:both; background:transparent; color:white; border:transparent solid 0px; margin:6px 20px 0px 20px; padding:100px;} /* main page: video box (different from video page) */ .videoBox_mainPage {padding:5px; margin:0px 100px 20px 100px;} .videoBox_mainPage .video {padding:5px; margin-bottom:10px;} .videoBox_mainPage .title {font-size:15px; text-align:center; margin-bottom:3px;} .videoBox_mainPage .shareLinks {float:right; padding:2px; border-bottom:#4b4b4b dashed 1px;} .videoBox_mainPage .labels {color:#666666; width:100px; padding-right:20px; text-align:right; float:left;} .videoBox_mainPage .info {padding-left:120px;} .videoBox_mainPage a:link, .videoBox_mainPage a:visited {font-size:13px; font-weight:normal; text-decoration:none;} .videoBox_mainPage a:hover {text-decoration:underline;} /* main page: upcoming shows */ .liveshowsBox {background:#cccccc; color:#000000; width:300px; margin:15px 2px 15px 10px; float:right; clear:right;} .liveshowsItems {padding:4px 0px 0px 0px; font-size:11px; clear:both;} .liveshowsBox a:link, .liveshowsBox a:visited {color:#000000; text-decoration:none;} .liveshowsBox a:hover {color:#666666; text-decoration:underline; cursorointer;} /* main page: standard song box on artist page (only this song box or the embedded player is used. However, the menu bar displays about 10 pixels lower in Firefox than it does in IE. <a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)">Link</a> I checked the margins, padding but can not seem to find a way to get the menu to display at the same position in both browsers. Any guidance is very appreciated. thanks.
