CSS - Another Inconsistency Between Ie And Firefox - Browser Default Styles
Hi All.
I am getting an extra space in FireFox. The space is fixed when I disable the 'Browser Default Styles' in FireFox. IE7 shows it OK. http://holzgreen.com/gap/ any comment is appreciated. sukruB Similar TutorialsI'm sure this question has been asked a million times. I have some navigation that looks like this when closed: Link1 Link2 Link3 Link4 and this when open: Link1 Link2 Link3 sublink for Link3 Link4 I've used "margin" for the subLink class to create the right amount of space above and below the sublink, but it gets displayed totally differently in the different browsers. On my mac it looks perfect with margin: -16px 0px 0px 4px; but on Windows the negative margin has the result that the sublink gets displayed right on top of Link3. Using margin is probably not the right way to do it. Padding has the same effect. Can anyone help? Thanks, LauraS. Hi everybody, The basic set up of a site I'm creating is I have a div with a table inside it both set to 1000px wide. Within the table are the images that make up the background of the site. Also within the core div is another div which contains a music player set to absolute positioning. Everything looks perfect in IE however the music player goes beyond the bottom of the image behind it in Firefox. The music player itself doesn't move, only the pictures behind it so that leads me to believe it's an issue with where the starting point of the table is rather than the core div. I'm completely out of ideas. Does anybody have any thoughts? I tried to include a link to the page incase anybody wanted to look at the actual coding but the forum wouldn't allow me since I'm a new user. Hi all Is there a way to set a value, that has been overridden by a specific value before, to the browser's default value again? Code: div.specific { font-size: 10px; } div.specific div.browser_default { font-size: default; } Is there anything like that? Thanks for help, Josh Hi, First post on here! ...I have a problem with the default margin in IE being 1px less than Firefox. I've stripped my CSS down to be as naked as possible! It's quite frustrating as I'm quite experienced with CSS, I guess the small silly things do things like this when you've not been CSS'n for a few months! HTML:- Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" /> <title>Untitled Document</title> <link rel="stylesheet" href="style.css" type="text/css" /> </head> <body> test </body> </html> CSS:- Code: * { margin: 0; padding: 0; } I need some really rediculous link styles, like all of the cool fading/pixelating ones that work on IE - but I can't find any for Firefox. Does anyone know if they exist, or where to find them? I can't for the life of me figure why IE displays this differently than all the other browsers I've tried (FF, Opera, Chrome). www dot ultra-ms dot com slash test At the bottom of the page I have a navigation section as well as a breadcrumb trail. The navigation is pushed to the left side and the breadcrumb to the right. IE, however, inserts a line break between the two causing the breadcrumb to be on the next line down. I want them on the same line. Here's the CSS rules that govern this section Code: #footer { font-size: 8pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #999999; width: 990px; padding-left: 10px; border-top-style: dotted; border-top-color: #999999; border-bottom-style: dotted; border-bottom-color: #999999; border-width: thin; clear: both; } .breadcrumb { float: right; padding-right: 15px; } And here is the HTML for that part. Code: <div id="footer"> <a href="index.html">Home</a> | <a href="profile.html">Profile</a> | <a href="capabilities.html">Capabilities</a> | <a href="careers.html">Careers</a> | <a href="contact.html">Contact</a> | <a href="sitemap.html">Site Map</a> <div class="breadcrumb"> <a href="index.html">Home</a> > Careers </div> </div> Can someone help? Hi all, I'm something of a noob when it comes to html and css but I usually manage to scrape by. However I have a bizzare problem. I have a background image (that I'm not repeating due to a graphic) and I want it positioned at the top left hand corner of the browser window. I used CSS positioning to achieve this and it works just fine, however, when I uploaded my files online to my server, the image won't go to the upper left hand corner of the browser window. It sits there close to the upper hand left side but doesn't touch the end, and there is a black border around the image (which is the color I've set as the background). So my issue is, when I work off my mac, the background image is positioned where I want it to be, but once I upload my files to my site, it disregards that positioning and puts the background image in something of a default position. I've checked on Safari and Firefox and they both do the same thing, but display correctly when I view the html file off my computer. Is there some formatting thing that I'm missing? Here is my code: HTML: <div id="background_image"><img src="background.jpg" alt="background" /></div> CSS: #background_image { position:absolute; left:0px; top:0px; z-index: 1; } Hiya, I was wondering if anyone out there would be willing to take a look and tell me why this works in everything except IE6. I really don't want to go back and re-architect this with tables. it took too long in the first place. http://www.theblackkeys.com/dev/ Any quick help is appreciated. Original deadline was tonight. The submenus are not lining up properly in Firefox or Safari but it looks right in IE. If I fix how it looks in Firefox and Safari, it will not look right in IE. Anyone know how to solve this? Here is the link: link to problem Hi: I'd like to ask you why my image sit in different position from IE and Firefox browser. my code as following; PHP Code: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd"> <html lang="en"> <head> <style type="text/css"> #image{ position: absolute; right: 18px; top: -10px; padding:0; border: 2px dashed red; } #img1{ position: relative; padding: 0; border: 2px dashed #32ed19; margin:auto; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="image"> <img id="img1" src="firstcar.JPG" alt="myfirstcar"> </div> </body> </html> I am having a css issue with IE 6 showing a gap in mambo template however this does not appear in Firefox and the site looks perfect viewing in Firefox.. Over at http://www.stlaware.com and look at the weather box on the left side of the site if your using IE you will see a white gap I would say maybe 200ish pixel width on the right side of the weather box which I don't want any spaces or padding around the box but padding: 0px or margin: 0px doesn't seem to fix it. If you have both browser compare it in IE and Firefox and you'll see what I mean .. also on the right of the site is a random image and it also have the gap on each side of the image which is not seen in Firefox either Any way to correct this gap and make it disappear in IE? I notice you can't include URLs in the post for new members so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! My first post.... ok... First I would like to say THANK YOU to anyone who has time to bestow some knowledge to me on what I am sure is a highly noob-esqe situation. I would also like to say that I have thoroughly search this and other forums for my issue, unfortunately I dont think I understand CSS or any web design enough to comprehend the solutions given. I think this may require someone with the knowledge I lack to come down to my level... if you can bend that low.. and walk me thru layman term-style. Again thanks in advance for anytime spent helping out. That being said I was recently trying to jazz up my website that is hosted by a certain music community. I do a decent amount of business thru this site so I wanted to step up the interface a little and get away from using the standard page setup they give you. They do offer the option to edit CSS to construct your own for a little more customization. I jumped in, and after a few days of struggling, I got it looking how I wanted it. I was excited until I realized it looked different on almost every computer i visited the site on. My Background is fine, but the links to paypal and other content is all over the place(e.g. song player, twitter link, buttons) I have tweaked and tweaked, but have not been able to remedy this apparently common problem due to my lack of knowledge and experience. My only hope is to post the coding here and have a Smart Guy/Girl guide me in the right direction. I hope Im not asking too much guys... here goes (I know I can post my url here, how can I redirect you guys to veiw my site??) /********* SoundClick CSS Template (based on custom version Mon, Sep 28 2009) ***********/ Quote: /* general */ body {background: url((MyBGJPEGforbackground)); margin:0px;} body, div,tr,td,select, textarea, input, option {font-family:Verdana; font-size:11px;} a, a:link, a:visited {color:white; text-decoration:none;} a:hover {color:#ff0000; text-decoration:underline;} .pageFooter {clear:both; color:gray; padding:1px 0px 50px 20px;} .infoBox {width:650px; margin:50px auto; background:white; color:black; border:silver solid 1px; padding:30px; font-size:14px;} /* hardly used, its for error messages to user */ .infoBox .quotes {margin:20px; border:#4b4b4b dashed 1px; font-style:italic; padding:10px; background:;} /* main containers */ .mainTable {background: url((MainTableBGPicWentHere)) ; color:#999999; width:750px; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; text-align:center;} .mainContent {background:url(/images/siteNav/transbgblocks/black/bg_0.png); color:#999999; width:725px; float:left; overflow:hidden; margin:0px 0px 20px 5px;} /* IE6 doesnt support our preferred overflow:visible */ /* left navigation */ .navigation {background:url(/images/siteNav/transbgblocks/black/bg_0.png); color:white; width:300px; float:left; overflow:hidden; margin:10px 0px 20px 0px;} .navigation a:link, .navigation a:visited {color:#999999;} .navigation a:hover {color:#ffffff;} .navigationDivider {height:6px; line-height:6px; border-bottom:#232323 dashed 1px; margin-bottom:6px;} /* general elements */ .headline {background:transparent; color:transparent; font-weight:bold; border-bottom:transparent dashed 0px; border-top:transparent solid 0px; padding:330px 1px 50px 50px;} .headlineBig {font-size:22px; font-weight:normal;} .headlineSuppl {float:right; margin:0px 0px 0px 100px; color:#666666; font-size:11px; font-weight:normal;} /* for text/links on the right side of main headline (e.g. song count on main page) */ .headlineSuppl a:link, .headlineSuppl a:visited {color:#666666; text-decoration:none;} .headlineSuppl a:hover {color:black; text-decoration:underline;} .pageturner {background:; color:#cccccc; border:#4b4b4b solid 1px; text-align:right; padding:10px; font-size:13px; font-weight:normal;} /* pages menu (previous, next..), e.g. on music page, message board */ .pageturner .nonactive {color:#666666;} .pageturner a:link, .pageturner a:visited {color:#cccccc; text-decoration:none;} .pageturner a:hover {color:#ff0000; text-decoration:underline;} .listedPicsBox {border:#4b4b4b solid 1px; width:114px; height:160px; overflow:hidden; padding:2px 1px 4px 1px; margin:0px 4px 10px 4px; float:left; font-size:11px; text-align:center;} .listedPics {width:110px; height:125px; background-position: center center; background-repeat: no-repeat; margin:2px 0px 4px 0px; overflow:hidden} .breaker {height:1px; line-height:1px; clear:both} /* general color and font assets */ .color_supplemental {color:#666666;} /* used e.g. for song pages comments count */ .alternateBG0 {background:none;} /* used as background colors for comments */ .alternateBG1 {background:none;} /* alternate color */ /* main page (the default entry page) */ .mainContent .contHeadline {clear:left; font-size:16px; color:#cccccc; padding:1px 0px 2px 20px;} /* interview questions */ .mainContent .contText {clear:left; padding-left:15px;} .mainContent .contInterview {clear:left; padding-left:30px;} .mainContent .newsBox {clear:both; background:transparent; color:white; border:transparent solid 0px; margin:6px 20px 0px 20px; padding:100px;} /* main page: video box (different from video page) */ .videoBox_mainPage {padding:5px; margin:0px 100px 20px 100px;} .videoBox_mainPage .video {padding:5px; margin-bottom:10px;} .videoBox_mainPage .title {font-size:15px; text-align:center; margin-bottom:3px;} .videoBox_mainPage .shareLinks {float:right; padding:2px; border-bottom:#4b4b4b dashed 1px;} .videoBox_mainPage .labels {color:#666666; width:100px; padding-right:20px; text-align:right; float:left;} .videoBox_mainPage .info {padding-left:120px;} .videoBox_mainPage a:link, .videoBox_mainPage a:visited {font-size:13px; font-weight:normal; text-decoration:none;} .videoBox_mainPage a:hover {text-decoration:underline;} /* main page: upcoming shows */ .liveshowsBox {background:#cccccc; color:#000000; width:300px; margin:15px 2px 15px 10px; float:right; clear:right;} .liveshowsItems {padding:4px 0px 0px 0px; font-size:11px; clear:both;} .liveshowsBox a:link, .liveshowsBox a:visited {color:#000000; text-decoration:none;} .liveshowsBox a:hover {color:#666666; text-decoration:underline; cursorointer;} /* main page: standard song box on artist page (only this song box or the embedded player is used. Any guidance is very appreciated. thanks. Unfortunately I am not very experienced and I am trying to edit some coding that has been done for me. The code is as follows <div title="[[TITLE]]" style='background-image: url ([bg]); padding: 5%; width:90%; height:100%; padding-left: 6%; padding-right: 6%; background-size: 100% 100%; '> Now what happens is the words I type in this box are beautifully laid out because of the padding... The images placed in the box should stretch border to border - but obviously don't because of the padding.... Can anyone please tell me what I can change to give my text padding but images with no padding? Thanks so much Hello -- new to this forum. My questions concerns a problem I've run into many times. I'm trying to be CSS-moral and use style sheets as much as possible, or a least place properties in the Header. But here's what I run into. Many times I find it necessary to have different properties for the same tag within the Body. Currently, I use CSS to create the Menu items at the top of each web page, an Unordered List, using the "li" tags. Ok, but I just discovered that by using a new CSS statement, I can use custom bullets in the Body's li tag: list-style-image : url(bullet.gif) . Cool!!! So, I went about making a little dog bone .gif and used it for my bullet graphic halfway down the page. Voila! It worked. Voila! I suddenly have dog bones in my menu (which I don't want !), which also use the li tag. I only know two workarounds. 1) is to go back to the BAD practice of using the taboo in-line style="images/dogbone.gif" in each li within the body and NOT put the statement in the Header style section or 2) at least try to use CSS in the header by making a class like li.bone { list-style-image : bone} and then repeat class="bone" for each li in the body, which is only slightly shorter than just putting in the style="xxx" in the first place. So, how do we handle using different style properties for the same tag within the body? Perplexed, Mike I'd like to seperate blocks of text with a horazontal rule. I'd like it to be dashed. So, I've come up with this: Quote: hr { border: none 0; border-top: 1px dashed #000; width:98%; height: 1px } However, although this works well in IE, it Firefox there is too much space between the HR and the text block under it. In other words, the text above the HR comes right up to the line, but the text under the line, there is a larger gap. Any way to close the gap? Any ideas? What is the difference between inline styles and id's? Are there places where you should use one and not the other? Sorry if this has already been answered but I couldn't find anything in a search. I have a page that I'm building as a prototype for a working medical exam GUI. I'm using Dreamweaver and it's pretty ugly. Is there anywhere I can download some styles that will bring this site to life? Maybe OSX or Vista-looking stuff? I understand how to write a print.css style sheet, but I am unclear on how to use it. I want to have a link on my page that says "Printer Friendly Version" that displays the printer friendly version and lets them hit the print button on the browser to print it. I think this is the most common way to print a web page, right? So I am displaying to the screen first and the printer if they hit the button. So how do I get the print.css formatting to display instead of the screen version? Obviously I want a single markup file for both purposes. |
