CSS - 2 Column Fixed Width Backgrounds
Hello all,
I am implementing a 2 column fixed width template. The problem is that the smaller column does not stretch to match the height of the taller column. All of the online templates I have found remedy this problem by setting a 1 px high background image to span the width of the container div. My problem is that I would like to place an image at the top and bottom of the smaller column. How can I achieve this? Similar TutorialsHi I am trying to make a table to display some stuff within a fix sized window. I want to have 5 columns of fixed width and one column that spans the rest of the remaining space. The Idea is to allow the widths of the first 5 columns to be changed by a script and having the last one adapting as needed... html Code: Original - html Code <div class="container"><table cellspacing="0"> <colgroup> <col width="40" /> <col width="220" /> <col width="120" /> <col width="65" /> <col width="40" /> </colgroup> <thead> <tr> <th>A</th> <th>B</th> <th>C</th> <th>D</th> <th>E</th> <th style="width: 100%;></th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td>1</td> <td>2</td> <td>3</td> <td>4</td> <td>5</td> <td style="width: 100%;></td> </tr> </tbody> </table></div> <div class="container"><table cellspacing="0"> <colgroup> <col width="40" /> <col width="220" /> <col width="120" /> <col width="65" /> <col width="40" /> </colgroup> <thead> <tr> <th>A</th> <th>B</th> <th>C</th> <th>D</th> <th>E</th> <th style="width: 100%;></th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td>1</td> <td>2</td> <td>3</td> <td>4</td> <td>5</td> <td style="width: 100%;></td> </tr> </tbody> </table></div> css Code: Original - css Code div.container { height: 400px; width: 800px; overflow: scroll; } table { width: 100%; } td { border-style: solid; border-color: silver; border-width: 0px; padding: 1px 3px; } th { border-style: outset; border-color: silver; border-width: 2px; background: silver; padding: 1px 3px; }
It really does fill the entire space but the last column crushes all the other into their minimal width resulting in linebreaks between words inside the cells... Please help me Currently I have 2 fixed columns and a fluid center column. When I resize the window horizontally I want the columns to stay fixed until the center column will begin to overlap the side columns, at which point I'd like the side columns to begin fluidly squashing to accommodate. Is it possible to do this? Only thing I know of is max-width, but I'm not sure if that's correct as I've never used it before. Any help would be VERY appreciated guys, as I need to know this quite soon. -Luke I need a combination of this: http://bonrouge.com/3c-hf-fixed.php and this: http://bonrouge.com/3c-hf-fluid.php I need the middle column to be a fixed width and the outer two to be fluid. I also need to maintain the 100% with header and footer at top and bottom respectively. Any ideas how to do this? Thanks. Hi all, I'm trying to achieve the following: <div id="left">This column is of blue background, and stretches all the way to the left.</div> <div id="center"> THIS COLUMN IS FIXED WIDTH, 760px </div> <div id="right">This column is of red background, and stretches all the way to the right.</div> Hope that is self explanatory.. I've Googled all this but can only find solutions for fluid "center" columns with fixed width right/left columns. I'm trying to do the opposite. Could anyone let me know how I can do this? I've got some messy CSS that definitely needs to be corrected, I'm trying out different things so here's my 'trial& error' code: Code: #left { background-color: blue; float: left; margin: auto; position: absolute; } #center { background: #DFDFEB url(../images/body/top.jpg) no-repeat; width: 760px; margin: 0 auto; } #right { background-color: red; } Thanks in advance! I'm working on my personal website and needed something quick so I found a free template I liked and started changing things as needed. The way the header works is it uses a background img for the nav so it displays off both sides of the browser. This image scrolls up as the page does. To make it look more interesting I wanted to add a simple background image to visually box in the content... but I need this one to be fixed. Every solution I've tried doesn't seem to work. I'm posting separate test links with a description why its not working. (I'm a new user so you'll have to copy/paste links. Figured it'd be easier for you to see it than post 8 different code tags). First thing's first: Images I'm moving around a bg_boarder.jpg and bg_general.jpg bradyoo.com/test.html Both bg imgs in body {} - boarder img scrolls. bradyoo.com/test02.html Boarder img fixed in wrapper {} - boarder img displays on top of bg_general by YO logo. bradyoo.com/tes03t.html Boarder img fixed in body {}, general img in header{} - General image doesn't display beyond wrapper. I even tried fixing everything (not the optimal result, but I will use it if this is the only solution) bradyoo.com/test04.html Both bg fixed in body {}, position: fixed in header {} - I added the fixed position in the header to keep the nav from scrolling but the embeded content displays on top of the header when scrolling. Hi, I have hit the "wall" in my knowledge of CSS while trying to implement a "flex-width-equal-height-sidebar-layout" style of layout as a skin/theme for a message board system and need some help. My trouble occurs when a direct link to the post is used (instead of following the menu navigation system) where the top menu information/links area (the area between the banner and the post) is chopped off... The relevant portion of the CSS seems to be the .col_wrap {margin-top: 10px; border: 0; overflow: hidden; float: left; width: 100%; position: relative; z-index: 10; clear: both;} portion of my CSS because if I take out the overflow:hidden declaration then the menu portion of the skin/theme/layout shows correctly but the sidebar the shows the part which should be hidden at the bottom and the footer completely vanishes from view! My apologies but this is the best I can do without having the ability to post pics or urls which could better explain what is wrong and frankly speaking I don't know how anyone here can help given my inability to show the problem but hopefully someone knows or has run into this problem before or can offer some resources that may be of assistance.... i ve been playing with my page and been trying to modify the width of the page (divs) according to the browswer's width. The problem is i want the navigation menu on left to be fixed width (say 200px) and the center div and the right column to be variable width. Also, i want to set a minimum width , so that the floating divs dont roll below the navigation menu. here s the link to the page. try reducing ur browser windows size . the content div rolls down under theleft nav menu. http://ccc.1asphost.com/pacemakerpr...r/cicuitlab.htm Also , i get wierd result in netscape navigator. please help I have seen a design which I find pretty interesting where in the main site is aligned left and fixed width at say 700px wide. Yet the footer seems to span the entire screen. The header also seems to use the entire screen width but that is beign accomplished with the background image, but this footer goes all the way to end of the screen and naturally adjusts itself under all the content. Is there a way to get this effect? I'm designing a page he (URL address blocked: See forum rules) I'm confused on how to make the top bar image span the width of each side and still be in synch with the center background image. I've done this with tables on the old version of the site (here ), but is it possible with CSS? Here's the code for the bars currently: .BGLEFTTOP{ position:absolute; left:0%; top:0px; height:88px; width:50%; margin-left:-456; background:url((URL address blocked: See forum rules)) repeat-x; background-position: right top; z-index:1;} .BGRIGHTTOP{ position:absolute; right:0%; top:0px; height:88px; width:50%; background:url((URL address blocked: See forum rules)) repeat-x; background-position: left top; z-index:1;} I'm at the very very very begaining of a table-less design (my first, actually). The problem is, since I have decided to have a non-fixed width, when the browser is minimized, at a certain point the design breaks. See it here (please don't make fun! it's just the start): SiliconSatan.com/test.php I'd like to set a minimum width, probably on the container <div>, so at a certain point it sort of becomes like a fixed width? No smaller than a set width? [EDIT] Also, I have a question about background color mismatch, but it was not quite OT for the CSS forum: http://forums.devshed.com/web-desig...e7t-403266.html I have a titlebar for an article for my site and i'm trying to achieve rounded corners with transparency. The problem is that my transparent images (toprightcorner and blobs) are showing the background of the div i've used to tile the background image across the bar (it's variable width). How can I prevent this? i know there is background-position but i need a fixed size that the background won't tile across at either end while the width is variable. Is the only solution to make 3 divs and use 2 as columns to hold the corner images and have the background tile across it or is there an easier way? Here is the relevant code Thanks --James Code: <div class="articlebox"> <div class="articletitle"><img class="left" src="blobs.jpg" border="0" /></div> </div> css Code: Original - css Code div.articlebox{ width:100%; /*attach it to the top of the box so we can layer the corner on top of it*/ background:rgb(249,249,249) url('topbg2.png') repeat-x fixed; padding:0px; margin:0px; } div.articletitle{ text-align:left; width:100%; height:21px; background:url('toprightcorner2.png') no-repeat right top; border-bottom:1px solid #888; padding:0px; margin:0px; } div.articletitle img{ float:left; } * html div.articletitle img{ margin-left:-3px; }
Hey, So I have a three column layout being implemented as such: html: Code: <div class="content"> <div class="col1 column"></div> <div class="col3 column"></div> <div class="col2 column"> <div class="header">Header</div> </div> </div> CSS: Code: .column { padding: 10px; position:relative; } .header { background:#cfe6f5; color:#416383; font-size:11px; font-family:Arial; font-weight:300; padding-left:15px; } .col1 { float: left; width:250px; } .col2 { margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; } .col3 { float:right; width:250px; } The problem is that the width of the header div extends all the way to the left and right of the page when it's in the middle column, but behaves the way I want it to (extends to the left and right of the column) when it's in the left or right column. Any ideas? Thanks. --Surgery Hello, I am having difficulty with the center column on the following page: http://cbo4edu.org/index2.html I want to widen the center column so that the CBO NEWS heading touches the blue line which divides the center and right column. When I try to add width to the style sheet the left column moves out of alignment. Any help is much appreciated, thanks! Hello, (please also see attached/uploaded style sheet) I'm puzzled why (in the following code) the TEST #2 table renders as required (i.e. 2 rows in 1 column, all with the same cell WIDTH) but the table in TEST #1 seems to render the table cells (i.e. 2 columns in 1 row) without a common cell WIDTH. How can I get all the cells (there are plenty more!) in table TEST #1 to all be exactly the same width (preferably 85px)? Code: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://thinet/cgi-bin/thinetStyleSheet.css"> TEST #1 <table class="menu" border=1 CELLPADDING=2> <tr> <td class="pinkButtons"><a title="Treats menu" href='http://thinet/theread/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=82'>Treats</a></td> <td class="pinkButtons"><a title="New Starters, Leavers and Transfers" href='http://thinet/theread/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=41'>Joiners etc.</a></td> </tr> </table> <P> TEST #2 <table class="menu" border=1 CELLPADDING=2> <tr><td class="pinkButtons"><a title="Treats menu" href='http://thinet/theread/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=82'>Treats</a></td></tr> <tr><td class="pinkButtons"><a title="New Starters, Leavers and Transfers" href='http://thinet/theread/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=41'>Joiners etc.</a></td></tr> </table> I don't think I've quite grasped the idea of CSS yet?!?! Any help/pointers would be appreciated. Thanks, Andy Hi everybody, This may actually be a very easy thing to do with CSS, but with me being a newbie who learned what CSS stands for 2 days ago, it's become a huge headache. I've tried googling and looking at some sample code but all my attempts have failed. This is pretty much my last hope. Please help! Basically, I've been trying to place two different background images at two different specific locations, one of them at left-center, and the other one at right-center. I also need them to be able to move/slide as the user scrolls up and down so that they remain visible at all times. What I have at the moment is a single background image positioned at left-center, and it does not slide. My current code looks like this: Code: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> <html> <head> <title>The Website</title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" /> <META name="description" content="Welcome to my personal website."> <body topmargin="0" leftmargin="0" rightmargin="0" bottommargin="0" bgcolor="#000000" text="333366" scroll="yes" style="background-image: url('devbg-left.jpg'); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: left center"> <div align="center"></div> </body> </html> What I desperately need is one more image placed on the right side, and both of them to be able to slide. I would appreciate all kinds of help. Thank you so much. All the best, Yucel Having coded using tables for the past 5 years, I'm coding my first site using pure CSS (hold back the laughter) ... I'm new to change. In any case ... I'm attempting to setup a homepage that has a fixed width and height. So far I've got a one-column header working fine. Beneath the one-column header I wish to have three columns with--dare I say it Web 2.0ish rounded corner cells--However the caveat is that these three cells need to all be a fixed height to go along with the page design. After two days of research, coffee, banging my head against my desk, I haven't been able to figure this one out. I am using an image at the top of each cell and an image at the bottom of each cell, but cannot get the cells to maintain a specific height. It either looks likeit rises just above the top of the super-container, or it is flush with the top and leaves a margin underneath it. As always, any help or design/tips as to what I am doing wrong would be great. I am just experimenting with new things, trying to see what I can or cannot do. The idea would be to have a home page with picture and right column with info. Then on the sub-pages have nav and subnav on the middle and right columns and pics on the left. Just a dry run, trying to see where i am. Thanks for the help in advance! jon Hello, I created a 3 column layout with header and footer: http://www.27lamps.com/public/layout.htm The problems I have a 1. I am not able to extend my 3 columns so they have the same height. How can I do this? Do I need to use images somehow? I would prefer to use CSS only if possible. 2. I am not able to use padding in my columns without breaking the design. Could someone, please, help me fixing this problem and also improve my code? Thanks, Miguel Hi, this is my first post. I have a problem with the navigation bar on a site that I'm developing (musicboxtheatre.com). It renders properly in firefox and safari, but, of course, IE is causing problems. It renders as steps. The tabs are dropping vertically so that their tops are aligning with the bottom of the previous tabs line-height. Does anyone know of a solution? Update: I rewrote everything, and it somehow works now. Nevermind. Pretty much what the title says, is it possible to center a div in the middle of the screen without giving it a fixed width? |
