CSS - Problems With Page Layout With Divs (how To Set Background Color Properly)
Hey,
I use div's to create my page structure (you can see it on the screenshot) http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/...tructurege3.jpg The green part is the navigation and the blue part the contents of the page. But as you see the colors both dont fill up till the bottom of the document. And if i set: height: 100%; then it will fill up to the bottom, but when the contents gets to big and a scrollbar is needed, then the part that you scroll down is not filled up with the colors anymore. Does anybody know how to fix this? Thanks in advance. Similar TutorialsI've got a mostly-css layout he http://highballsociety.com/~lwco/test.php Using the following CSS page he http://highballsociety.com/~lwco/lwc.css For some reason, the div on the right will not display the off-white background color in IE 6. It looks fine in Firebird and even on IE 5 for Mac. I have a feeling that this has something to do with the fact that I've not done very precise sizing of various divs and haven't really implremented the IE box-model hack for much of the site. Let me know if you can help. Also, when I force IE to redraw, by moving the page off the screen and back on, or if I hover over the text in the div, it seems to try redrawing the off-white background, but never actually completes. Thanks, m__ I have nested divs and on the most outer div i apply a background-color but it is only applied to half of the divs?? it happens BOTH in firefox & IE!! PHP Code: <style type="text/css"> /********** layout of the page ***********/ #top { background-color:yellow; clear:both; } /***************** Formatting top part of the page **************/ #tag { float:left; margin-left:8em; } #login { float:right; } #logo { margin-left:2em; float:left; clear:left; } #searchBox { float:right; clear:right; } #links2 { clear:right; background-color:yellow; } #links2 li{ font-size:0.8em; display:inline; float:right; text-decoration:none; list-style:none; padding:1em; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="top"> <div id="tag"> <p id="">Zahra Zahra Ltd</p> </div> <div id="login"> <p>Login/Register</p> </div> <div id="logo"> <a href="index.php"><img src="images/site/zahra.jpg" width="65" height="59" /></a> </div> <div id="searchBox"> <form action="search.php" method="post" style="margin:0em; padding:0em;"> <label>What are you shopping for?</label> <input type="text" name="search" value="search" size="14"/> <input type="submit" name="submit" value="Go" /> </form> </div> <div id="links2"> <ul> <li>Contact Us</li> <li>Testimonial</li> <li>Return Policy</li> <li>News</li> <li>FAQ</li> <li>about us</li> <li>Home</li> </ul> </div> </div> Hi. I am a relative CSS newbie working on a new layout. My intended format is:
A sidebar (a div with no visible border) containing a set of smaller divs.
A main div for the content on the right.
About 35 px of space between the sidebar div and the main div.
Yet, for some reason I am unable to force the sidebar and main div to come together in the center with space between them. Using float: only seems to make them both hug the side of the page. My HTML code is: Code: <div class="sidebar"> <div class="cv"> <font size="3"><b><center> Current Version Info </center></b></font> </div> <div class="ver"> <center> Version: <br/> <b>0.0.0</b> </center> </div> <div class="rel"> <center> Released: <br/> <b>00/00/00</b> </center> </div> <div class="nav"> </div> </div> <div class="main"> <center> Lorum ipsum </center> </div> The relevant CSS code is: Code: div.sidebar { width: 202px; float: left; border: 0px solid #00CC99; } div.cv { width: 200px; border: 1px solid #00CC99; background-color: rgb(33,33,33) } div.ver { width: 99px; border: 1px solid #00CC99; float: left; background-color: rgb(33,33,33) } div.rel { width: 99px; border: 1px solid #00CC99; float: right; background-color: rgb(33,33,33) } div.nav { margin-top: 30px; width: 200px; height: 100px; border: 1px solid #00CC99; background-color: rgb(33,33,33) } div.main { width: 500px; border: 1px solid #00CC99; background-color: rgb(33,33,33); float: right; } In particular, div.main and div.sidebar are the ones giving me trouble. What would you recommend? Edit: And for extra bonus points, can you tell me how to make another div go below everything, no matter how long the sidebar or main div is? Right now anything I add seems to hover behind the main div rather than render below it. Hi everyone, Please take a look at this site: http://174.122.106.156/~johanna/php The layout is fine in FF3.6, Chrome9, IE7 and IE8, but in IE6, the layout is buggered. Can anyone tell me what's wrong and why? Also, what is a good way to debug/troubleshoot layout problems in IE6? Currently, I use IETester to "view" pages in different versions of IE, but I can't poke around with the IE Developer Plugin or FireBug and know exactly what's the offending code. How do you guys find and fix IE6-specific layout issues? Thanks. Hi there, I have two problems with the display of my website in different browsers. The first is when you view my site, http://www.tophatweddings.co.uk in FireFox. In IE 6 the white background extends to the foot of the content. However in Firefox you'll notice it doesn't and the left, central and right columns all finish at different levels. How can I get the white background to behave in the same way as IE? My second issue is with IE7. Now, some people might actually download and install this "browser" - those poor people. Anyway in IE 7 you'll notice the footer just decides to display halfway through the page because I guess some CSS has changed in this version of IE. Does anyone know what this could be? Help with either of these issues would be greatly appreciated and reputation points award to those who post helpful answers. Thanks - I've searched around the web for a solution to this problem and have found other with BG display problems, but none that were exactly the same. Others seems to have a persistant problem, while mine only occurs about 20% of the time a page is loaded. Basically I have a div within a div. The inner div has variable content ranging from images, text, and tables, some of which are floated. The outer div has a superfish style menu in it. The height of the inner div is set to 100% to expand with the content within, and the outer div height is set to 100% to expand along with the inner div. Basically, two kinds of errors appear at random with IE. 1) a thin line of the outer div background color is missing at the bottom of the div just about corners rounded with RUZEE.ShadedBorder, or 2) a larger block of the background is missing just above the rounded corners. It only happens sporatically in IE, and usually pressing Reload fixes the problem. These divs are also enclosed within another container div, but its the smaller inner container div that is having the problem. It happens on all of the pages in my site about 20% of the time they are loaded up. Does anyone know why I'm having this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated! Here are two images of what I'm talking about followed by my CSS for those two divs. http:// i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/kan3xiao/Clipboard01.jpg http:// i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/kan3xiao/Clipboard02.jpg (remove the extra spaces after http://) #outerDiv { background-color: #BBDB56; height: 100%; padding: 1px 20px 23px 5px; width: 860px; margin: 15px auto 0px auto; } #outerDiv, #outerDiv .sb-inner { background: #bbdb56; } #innerDiv { margin: 15px 0px 0px 160px; padding-bottom: 0px; background-color: #fff; height: 100%; } This is driving me crazy and I can't figure it out. I have a "content" div that is a container for 2 other div's (a sidebar and a main content area). For some reason it isn't rendering in the proper place; it's rendering at the top of the page instead of under the navigation (if I don't assign a height to it it doesn't render at all). It also isn't extending past the end of the other 2 div's to reach the footer. I have tried adding overflow hidden to it but it just makes the other 2 divs not render at all. Any help is greatly appreciated. Here is the HTML and the CSS is below it. Now the problem. I have styled the Header tags in my CSS for a <div> tag that will contain the text on my page. They are to have the color of my navigation bar on the left of the page (value #cc0000). The nav bar is styled with a CSS created by a spry in Dreamweaver CS3. My text is styled by a separate CSS document (con-ed.css) which is found in a different directory. I created all of the style elements for my <h1> and <h2> tags and they look fine in Dreamweaver. But when I open the page in a Web browser such as Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer, all of the formatting of the tags displays EXCEPT the color value I mentioned above. I am guessing that I have a cascading issue going on, but I haven't been able to figure out where it would be. I am loading the con-ed.css stylesheet first, so its values should override any other sheets, plus there is no mention of <h1> or <h2> in the stylesheet for my navigation bar. I'm brand new to CSS and have run into my first speedbump. I've tried searching the forum already, forgive me if I missed a previously posted solution. Today I put together a page at work and it looked correct in IE8 (which is the only browser we can use at work). When I got home, I discovered that it doesn't display properly in ANY other browser. I've validated my code, and just can't figure out what the problem is. (I tried to link to images here of what it should look like versus what it actually looks like, but apparently as a new user I'm not permitted to post URLs. I also don't seem to be able to insert images into this post, so if anyone would like to see the images, I guess I could email them to you.) Can anyone tell me why the DIVs appear to be too long? The left sideColumn is working fine, however I am having a few problems with the mainColumn layout. Here is a static image to show what I want it to look like Here are the problems I am having: 1) The #scroll box is place where I want it in IE but in foxfire it is right up against the left side of the #sideColumn partially hidden. There will be text that scrolls into this box and stops. I haven't started on the part yet - in case that makes a difference. Not my choice, but that is what the bosses want. 2) I want the image centered horizontal within the #mainColumn. Here is what I have for the css: #home img { margin: 5px auto 5px auto; } which I thought would do the trick, but it's not. 3) I want the p text to have a 40px margin on the right and left side like the .large does. Here is what I have for the css: #home p, .large { margin: auto 40px auto 40px; } It works for the .large (Welcome to Vitalograph), but not for the text below it. At one point I had it working, but after addtional changes fixing other problems, now it doesn't and I can't figure out why. Hello all - I am currently having a problem with a background image not being repeated properly. There are two images that need to be repeated, div#topbg and div#leftbg. Topbg is being repeated-x correctly, but I am having problem with Leftbg being repeated-y. The Leftbg will repeat vertically but stops repeating until it reaches the end of the background image of div#wrapper. Could someone provide a solution to this? I need it to repeat all the way down the page! Here is the code for those that know of a simple solution. For those that need to look a bit more into it I have included a zip file as attachment to show just exactly what is wrong.. Please help! The CSS code: Code: html, body { height: 100%; } body { margin: 0px; padding: 0px; font : 12px/14px Verdana, Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000; text-align: left; } div#topbg { width: 100%; height: 145px; background : url(../images/top-bg.gif) repeat-x top left; } div#leftbg { position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; height: 100%; background : url(../images/left-bg.gif) repeat-y; } div#wrapper { position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 758px; height: 100%; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: url(../images/bg.jpg) no-repeat top left; } div#container { padding: 145px 0px 0px 125px; } div#content { width: 100%; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; float: left; } The HTML code: Code: <body> <div id="topbg"></div> <div id="leftbg"></div> <div id="wrapper"> <div id="container"> <div id="text">content</div> </div> </div> Hello, im trying to do some 3column layout with css menu, but in the middle column i have <div class="attachment_pdf"><a href="/xxx/xxx.pdf">XYZ (PDF, 2 MB )</a></div and in this div there is a background image of pdf icon. Everything works in Firefox, Mozzilas but in same cases on IE they are not shown. If i have 10 icons, 3 of them are not shown. After i go with mouseover on the link, i can see them, or if i scroll the window some of them are showing... have somebody met this problem? Or where can be problem? I know, that maybe you have to see the css, and its rather complicated. Thanx. I have edited this page down to be bare-bones for ease... The background image only shows behind the 'branding' div. It used to show all the way down. The problem is somewhere in the style sheet because it looks the same even when I take out all content between the body tags. I am not sure what mistake I made. When you look at the style sheet you will find html#orchid to be commented out. I realized how to work with that to fix the problem, however I want to know what is causing this problem in the first place, for my further education. http://www.centerpointpilates.com/welcome2.html code: Code: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?><!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en" xml:lang="en"> <head> <title>CENTERPOINT PILATES :: a Santa Barbara pilates studio</title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> <link href="/centerpoint.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> </head> <body background="/images/orchidYellowOverlay2.jpg" style="background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: top left;"> <div id="branding"> <h1>CenterPoint Pilates - Exercising the Body and Mind</h1> </div> <!--end branding--> <div id="content"> <div id="navigation"> <ul> <li><a href="/welcome.html">WELCOME</a></li> <li><a href="/studio.html">STUDIO</a></li> <li><a href="/getting-started.html">GETTING STARTED</a></li> <li><a href="/classes.html">CLASSES</a></li> <li><a href="/schedule.html">CLASS SCHEDULE</a></li> <li><a href="/workshops.html">WORKSHOPS</a></li> <li><a href="/pricing.html">PRICING</a></li> <li><a href="/instructors.html">TEACHERS</a></li> <li><a href="/contact-us.html">CONTACT US</a></li> </ul> </div> <!--end navigation--> <div id="text"> <h2>Welcome</h2> <p>CenterPoint Pilates was founded in 2001 with the goal of inspiring each individual on a program of exercising the body and mind.
