CSS - Issues With Table Elements And Background Images
I have two problems. First issue is that I cant seem to get a background image to repeat in IE when it works fine in FF. I tried to reproduce the bug on another server using the same exact CSS and to my shock, the background repeat rule works fine.
So, it doesnt work on my server at home with a much more complicated stylesheet (albiet the reference to the background image and repeat rule are exactly the same .. and simple) .. but when I port the same stylesheet to another server with simpler markup, boom, it works fine. Cant wrap my head around this one. Is there a commonly known IE bug/problem with background image/CSS/background-repeat rules? My site that does not work through IE shows the image once .. and thats it. No repeating like tell it to. My other issue (if youre still interested) is a problem with the CSS command: Code: table { empty-cells: show; } which does not work at all. As you can see on this page in IE, (http://www.doublethinkdesigns.com/development/ ) ive specified the rule, but lo and behold, the cells are still missing. Can someone kindly lend me some perspective perhaps? Thank you much in advance. Similar TutorialsHi everyone, this is my first post and I hope it's easily resolved. I'm new to CSS and working through CSS - The Missing Manual while slowly overhauling an old table-based web journal on the side. I'm trying to do the following: Left - navbar (~200px) Center - journal postings (~600px) Right - fixed image (~200px) // I want this to always be in sight I've gotten the first two nailed down nicely, but I'm having a really hard time with getting the fixed image to work. In extreme shorthand, the code relationship looks like this: <body> <nav-journal-image-wrapper width=1000> <nav-journal-wrapper width=800> <nav width=200> <journal width=600> </njw> </njiw> With the extra 200px of width in the final wrapper, I've been able to get the background image to be fixed and show nicely to the right of my navbar and journal post by making it the same 1000px in width. If the window is stretched, everything stays where it belongs - you just see more body background color. The problem is, when the window is condensed the final wrapper - despite having a set width - also is squeezed and my background image recedes under the journals. What I don't understand is why my navbar and journals seem impervious to small windows, but the wrapper around them with the background image is not? My code validates, and the relevant parts of the CSS start now: Code: <style type="text/css"> body { background-color:#333; } /* without this wrapper, the background in #nav-post-portrait-wrapper aligns with the screen right, not the wrapper's right */ #final-wrapper { background-color:red; width: 1034px; margin: 0 auto 0 auto; padding: 0; } /* this gives me an extra 200px on the right to show the fixed background image */ #nav-post-portrait-wrapper { margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 1034px; /* sets the max but doesn't seem to be preventing collapse */ background-color: white; background-image: url(CSS-TESTING/background-portrait-2.png); /* the image is also 1034px wide - I want this wrapper's width to be frozen! */ background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: top; background-attachment:fixed; } /* this groups the navbar and postings together */ #nav-and-post-wrapper { background-color:#0F0; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 828px; /* prevents collapse */ } /* begin nav sidebar CSS code */ #mainNav-wrapper { float: left; top: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0; height: 312px; width: 210px; } ul#mainNav { list-style: none; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: none; width: 200px; border-left: 2px solid #930; border-top: 2px solid #930; border-right: 2px solid #930; } ul li { width: 200px; margin: 0; padding: 0; height: 60px; border-bottom: 2px solid; border-bottom-color:#930; } /* end nav sidebar CSS code */ /* begin journal post CSS code */ #post-wrapper { margin-left: 214px; } .post { background-color:#6F9; border: 2px solid #930; width: 600px; height: auto; margin: 20px 0 0 0; padding: 0; } /* end journal post CSS code */ </style> <body bgcolor="#FFFFFF"> <div id="final-wrapper"> <div id="nav-post-portrait-wrapper"> <div id="nav-and-post-wrapper"> <div id="mainNav-wrapper"> <ul id="mainNav"> <li><a href="aboutme.htm" id="nav-about-me"></a></li> <li><a href="journalmain.htm" id="nav-journal-main"></a></li> <li><a href="beverageguide.htm" id="nav-beverage-guide"></a></li> <li><a href="guestbook/index.php" id="nav-graffiti"></a></li> <li><a href="contact.htm" id="nav-contact"></a></li> </ul> </div> <div id="post-wrapper"> <div class="post"> la la la </div> <!-- closes post div class --> <div class="post"> la la la </div> <!-- closes post div class --> <div class="post"> la la la </div> <!-- closes post div class --> <div class="post"> la la la </div> <!-- closes post div class --> <div class="post"> la la la </div> <!-- closes post div class --> </div> <!-- closes post-wrapper div id --> </div> <!-- closes nav-and-post-wrapper div id --> </div> <!-- closes nav-post-portrait-wrapper div id --> </div> <!-- closes final-wrapper div id --> </body> Thank you very much! does anyone know how i can get 4 background images in my table, one for each corner of the table? they are curved images, as i am aiming for the table to have curved edges. Thanks Colleagues, I seem to be having an issue on a page I am developing, where I am using CSS to position many of my elements. I have a banner at the top, and then have used absolute positioning of a couple of flash movies, a graphic and a javascript menu. I have used Xara Webstyle for creating the JS-based Menu. The problem I am experiencing, is that these are positioned in the order I mentioned, from the top to the middle of the page. I also then have some CSS positioned items below the menu. This menu is a tiered, or flyout menu of sorts, and when it drops down is should overlap the absolutely positioned items in the bottom of the page, but those items are overlapping the menu, I assume, because they are absolutely positioned. What I would like is to make the bottom items "go to the background" so to speak, so the javascripted menus writes over them. Is there some setting I am missing that would allow these bottom elements to be in background, so to speak, so that the menu drops will be on top?? Thanks for your help, in advance. Kork Hi there! I've been diving into trying to make mobile web pages and though a lot of my former CSS experience helps me a great deal I get a bit perplexed about forms. I'd like to have all my form elements at the width of a 100% except for checkboxes and radiobuttons. Now, this almost works out all the way but I have a problem with how the strict rendering handles form elements. I've tried using both XHTML Mobile 1.2 and XHTML Mobile 1.0 but the same problems arise; Apart from wanting the elements to go 100% in width, I also would like them to respect margins. If I simply set the width to a 100% and my right and left margins to, say, 5px, I get the field pushed in 5 pixels from the left but I cannot get the 5 pixel indent from the right. I have tried using a wrapper div but it suffers the same result. I have figured out that this can have something to do with the rules of mobile pages provided by the XHTML mobile rendering specification but I'm now wondering if there's anything I can do to accomplish this. I've found out that mobile pages that have full width elements look (in almost all cases) very good on most handsets I've tested. Thanks in advance! I have a table with a specified background color (specified in CSS). The content part of the table (a cell) uses information from a downloaded script (wordpress.com) to load information. I want the table background to shine through everything. How can I accomplish this (I suspect it is in the script CSS, but I don't know what). URL The 'home' page is how I want it (basically that background effect). But the other pages come out funny with no background. Could someone solve this, or alternatively reccommend another way. The layout I have going is a bit difficult to explain. Here's a diagram.. The area of importance is the header. The content and main head area are centered. The area to the left and right of the header are a <div>. However, as you can see, the background image on the left is different than the one on the right. I'm having difficulty making this work. the images can be stretched horizontally without a problem, but the two sides must meet in the middle beneath the header. I hope this makes sense. What I've got to do, I think, is tell the background image of the underlying <div> to stretch to 100%, and make this image 300px wide or so including both sides of the image and a split. The split would hide behind the header. I can't find a method to stretch the background image, though. Does anybody know of a better way, or a way to achieve this method at all without getting into completely different layouts? Thanks in advance for any assistance/suggestions. Hello, I'm trying to achieve an effect using a background image with an inline element. Specifically, I have certain hyperlinks that I want to display a graphical arrow to the right of. Essentially, it looks something like: Hyperlinked text here >>> Where ">>>" is actually a small graphic approximately 20 pixels wide. I don't want to place the image inline, because it's a visual effect and users don't need to "interact" with it. And it's also tied in with the style of the site, so controlling it through CSS is very attractive. I figured out that if I add about 20 pixels of padding to the right of the ANCHOR element, I can use the graphic as a CSS background image. Looks good in IE5+ and Mozilla-based browsers (not concerned with NS4), as long as the ANCHOR text is on one line. Problem is, when the text of the ANCHOR element breaks across two or more lines, I lose the image in IE. Of course, Mozilla-based browsers handle it perfectly -- it's just Microsoft's little problem child that's giving me fits. Anyone else have any luck using a background image on an inline element that spans two or more lines? I can't find any documented hacks or the like to help me out. Any help is greatly appreciated! -Chris Hello DevShed CSS Help Forum, I have a wierd problem (seems I have a knack for that ) with a design I'm working on. When you first go to this page there is some disruption around the two floated columns in the background image that is assigned to the body tag: (Right now the page is only working in non-IE browsers, but I don't know any developers that regularly use IE anyways...LOL) http://www.spidersend.com/new_site/newsite4/test6.html However if you refresh the page or click to another tab and then back to that page it corrects itself. Once I remove the sidebar and the float property from the css on the main content area the issue is gone so it has to be something to do with that. Has anybody experienced this before? I just find it odd that it doesn't stay messed up, but corrects itself, even if you refresh and clear the cache. Confusing and wierd. Any ideas? Theories? Any and all ideas are much appreciated. Here is the CSS: Code: body { background-color: #FFFFFF; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; font-family: "arial"; background-image: url('images/bottom_slice.png'); background-repeat: repeat-x; background-position: bottom center; } div#header { background-image: url('images/header_slice3.png'); background-repeat: repeat-x; height: 198px; width: 100%; } div#header-content { width: 680px; margin: 0px auto; } div#top-navigation { width: 680px; margin: 0px auto; position: relative; bottom: 16px; color: #FFFFFF; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 16px; padding: 0px; } div#content { width: 850px; float: left; } div#content-header { background-image: url('images/content_bg_top.png'); width: 850px; height: 30px; } div#content-footer { background-image: url('images/content_bg_bottom.png'); width:850px; height: 32px; } div#content-area { background-image: url('images/content_bg_slice.png'); padding-left: 18px; padding-right: 18px; } div#adbar { width: 157px; float: right; } div#adbar-header { background-image: url('images/sidebar_top.png'); width: 157px; height: 30px; } div#adbar-footer { background-image: url('images/sidebar_bottom.png'); width: 157px; height: 26px; } div#adbar-area { background-image: url('images/sidebar_slice.png'); padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px; } div#sidebar { float: right; clear: both; position: relative; right: 10px; background-color: #d2e7f0; width: 300px; -moz-border-radius: 5px; padding: 5px; margin-left: 15px; color: #0c577a; } div#sidebar2 { float: right; clear: both; position: relative; right: 10px; background-color: #d2e7f0; width: 300px; -moz-border-radius: 5px; padding: 5px; margin-left: 15px; margin-top: 20px; color: #0c577a; } div#content-wrapper { width: 1007px; margin: 0px auto; } I am new to css and just had a quick question. (please forgive me for any invalid lingo... hopefully you can make sense of my question) I am creating a dynamic calendar of events page, the calendar will be built using a table. If I put "table.calendar" in my style sheet to format the overall table, and I have th.calendar, td.calendar, do I have to add the "class" property to th or td, or will they automatically be in the calendar class because they are part of the table. For example... Do I do this? Code: <table class="calendar"> <tr><th></th></tr> <tr><td></td></tr> </table> Or this? Code: <table class="calendar"> <tr><th class="calendar"></th></tr> <tr><td class="calendar"></td></tr> </table> Howdy, Okay, this is driving me nuts...i have the background-color set the same for the header and the footer, only the header is displaying darker than the footer. I've been going over it with a fine-toothed comb, but can't find the problem. here's the site and here's the css; Code: /* Graphix Plus V 4.0 Styles */ h1 { font-family:arial; font-size:16px; font-color:#006696; font-weight:bold; } h2 { font-family:arial; font-size:14px; font-color:#006696; font-weight:bold; } body { padding:0px; margin-top:0px; background-image:url(images/bground-pattern.gif); background-color:#FFFFFF; font-family:arial; font-size:12px; color:black; text-decoration:none; text-align:left; border: 1px solid #E5E5E5; } .contentarea { background-color:#FFFFFF; padding:6px; border: 1px solid #E5E5E5; } .flankers { background-color:#C6C6C6; padding:4px; border: 1px solid #E5E5E5; } .header { background-color:#006696; padding:4px; background-image:url(images/gp_v4_header.gif); background-position:top left; background-repeat:no-repeat; } a.mainnav:link { font-family:arial; font-size:12px; color:black; text-decoration:underline; } a.mainnav:visited { font-family:arial; font-size:12px; color:black; text-decoration:underline; } a.mainnav:hover { font-family:arial; font-size:12px; color:#006696; text-decoration:underline; } /* MAIN MENU LIST STYLE BEGINS - UL class = 'NAV'*/ ul#nav, ul#nav ul { margin: 0; padding: 0; list-style: none; width: 100%; border-bottom: 1px solid #E5E5E5; background-image: url(http://www.graphixplus.com/images/no-pic.gif); background-color:#C6C6C6; } ul#nav li { position: relative; } li ul { position: absolute; left: 99%; top: 0; display: none; background-color: #006696; } ul#nav li a:hover { display: block; text-decoration:none; color:#E5E5E5; background-color:#006696; } ul#nav li a { display: block; font-family:arial; font-size:11px; text-decoration: none; color: #006696; padding: 1px; border: 1px solid #E5E5E5; border-bottom: 0; } /* Fix IE. I have a wrapper div with a background image that is repeated on Y. Within that wrapper i have a content div, there are messages that come from a database. the problem is that the wrapper (and the background) isnt expending to the text that is in the content div. How to make the wrapper expend to the size of the content div!?. here are my divs: Code: div.wrapper{ position:relative; width:900px; background:transparent url(images/templatemo_content_bg.jpg) repeat-y scroll 0 0; margin:auto; } div.content{ float:left; width:550px; margin-left:20px; } i changed alot to try and now im totaly lost xD greetings Razedd Thanks for taking the time to read my question. I have a container that has a background image. My container has rounded corners right top and bottom. This is done by putting subsequent containers above and below the container in question. I want to put text over the background image in the spot that looks like where text would go. My problem I think, has something to do with using <p> to put my text in. It automatically puts a space above and below the <p> area. I don't want this space. What else can I use? I tried <span> but that was no good. I tried setting the height on <span> but it didn't do anything. What I want to get to is my background-image in a container that has rounded corners with text in the "text area" warrenpersowich.com is the site that works right now, but has no background image in the top right container. warrenpersowich.com/IndexNew has the background image in, and I've made the top and bottom containers that have the rounded edges in them red so you can see them. Also note that they seem to function differently in FF and IE.... ya ya I know. If I use height: FF heeds it and IE doesn't. If you check out the css, the container in question is .CBBox4 css On my website I have the root folder that contains a folder called images along with others such as a members folder. I created an index.php and a styles.css page inside the members folder. Then I tried to add a background image to the index page via css. The background image never loaded on the web page, however the rest of the css did. Is this an issue with the images being in a different folder? Is there a way to link to the images without copying them into the new folder? Thanks. I'm using background images on a <span> tag. Code: .thespan { display: -moz-inline-box; display: inline-block; height: 16px; width: 16px; margin: 2px; /* using longhand on purpose, since other classes override bits later */ background-image: url(../img/iw_ds_sprite.gif); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: 0px 0px; } And already there's an issue. IE (even 6!) FF2 and 3, and Safari all do what I expect. However, Opera is off by about 40 pixels. There is a shell around the span - changing this shell's class makes the internal background-position change, like so: Code: .theshell .thespan { background-position: 0px -40px; } This actually works, except it doesn't. Opera, having been wrong in the first place, is now wrong by the same amount - it jumps to -80px. I've been pulling my hair out on this...I can't believe that it works in IE6 but not Opera! Any help is greatly appreciated. Tim Hello, I'm new to this forum, and somewhat new to CSS. I have learned enough about it to find my way around though, and I am still having problems changing one color on a theme. I have a Wordpress blog and am using a free theme I downloaded. It has a right and left sidebar. I would like to change the background color for both sidebars (they are not visually separated except by text). I have tried: .sidebar { line-height: 14px; font-size: 12px; background: #C4C2C2; } ...and that does change the background for them; but it does not extend to the footer. This new color only extends to the bottom of each sidebar content (so that if the blog portion is longer, the old color shows up below the new color). I have checked every single color in the css file, and I cannot find where this color is defined. Help, please!! Hi, How to create a rounded table, which has the td elements also rounded? Thank you I want to know how I could possible control all the elements inside a table that is inside a div with an id. This is possible correct? So if I have: Code: #header { width: 900px; } And then something like this: Code: <div id="header"> <table> <tr> <td> </td> </tr> </table> </div> I'd like to then have something like: Code: #header.table,td {padding-left: 10px;} Which I am hoping would put a 10px padding on all the td's in the table and nothing else. Is my syntax right? i really like the fieldset due to having the title in the middle of the border, but are there any cross-browser issues? also what i'm finding is that if i set background styling. IE sets the background colour to include the legend aswell, whereas Firefox sets the background colour to the confines of the border. Ideas welcome and asked for Effective Alternatives also welcomed Hi Folks, I've designed an H1 page heading within a DIV with rounded ends. and HTML text inbetween. It should appear as a horizontally expanding and contracting capsule. I can make one end rounded with a CSS background image in the DIV or the H1 - but how can I do the other? No tables allowed here and it has to be done only in the stylesheet. I've tried a BG in the DIV and a BG in the H1 but they don't line-up, even when there's no padding or margins. Is it possible to somehow attach an image to one side of an element? Thanks John Hello, I'm new to Dev Shed, I hope I won't seem like a fool here Is there any way to have to background images? I mean, I want to have a heading background image, and a footer background image to the same table. longing to your replies>>>> |
