CSS - Tool That Checks If My Css Is Valid (the Way The Browser Uses It)?
Hi all
I'm working with Firefox and Firebug plugin. I want to check if the CSS I use is valid *the way browsers interpret it*. Example: Code: /* Valid: */ div.my { position: relative; z-index: 10; } /* Invalid: */ div.my { z-index: 10; /* The attribute is not applied to the div, because it's not positioned! These sort of errors I want to get to know somehow! */ } /* Valid: */ div.my { z-index: 10; /* At this point the CSS isn't valid yet... */ } div.my { position: relative; /* Now it is valid (I guess, because I guess the browser first parses all CSS available and only after this it assigns the attributes?) */ } I hope you see what I mean. I came upon this because I had some problems with z-indexes and then remembered that every z-positioned element needs to be positioned. If I had a cool Firefox plugin that would have checked the CSS every time before it were applied to the document and warned me this wouldn't have been a big problem. ;-) Thanks a lot for help Josh Similar TutorialsI was recently working on something in JQuery where on click I was fading out a div and then fading it back in. To learn more about CSS transitions, I wondered whether I could do the same thing with transitions. So I set up a simple bit of JQuery that toggles a class on and off to trigger the transition. It seems that it's not possible to fade out to 0 in a transition and then fade back in. Unless I'm missing something, you can't set a midpoint of opacity 0. You can use a CSS animation to do that, but it's not clear to me how you play the animation again when I remove the class. Am I missing something? Am I just using the wrong tool for the job and should stick with JQuery's fadeOut() and fadeIn() functions? I don't want a browser plugin. I want a tool to open a CSS file and show me samples of the styles. I would like to edit the styles and see the effects of my edits. Any suggestions? Hi I want to make a tool where my users can select an area in an image, via resizing a select rectangle. Do you guys know if this tool is available somewhere? Thought that it's stupid to re-invent the wheel.... Regards, Chrille I want to display text when I hover over certain areas of an image, so I am using an image map, no href, and assigning the text using ALT=. As a result, the text shows up as a tooltip. It works great except that the background color in the tooltip box is a very dated yellow color that looks inconsistent with the rest of my page. Is there any way to change the background color? (I am trying to avoid scripts because I've never used them and don't really have time to learn how, at this point) Thanks, Beth basically i want them to hover over the image and the tool tip pops up.. it works awesome in firefox(of course) but does nothing in IE. also for testing i made a link tool tip and it works in IE but its cropped horribly. you can check it out by looking he http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=9726504 heres the style classes: Code: a span { display: none; } a:hover span { position: absolute; display: block; background: grey; border: 1px solid black; } a:hover { color: 000000; background-color: grey; text-decoration: none; font-size:16; } heres the div placement: Code: <div class="aim"> <a> <img border="0" class="" src="http://mattwild.com/media/graphic/aim.gif"> <span>allaimnamesRused</span></a> </div> by the way they are the two buttons "add my aim" and "add my msn" and the link underneath them I am developing a help manual and I'd love to include screenshots in the CSS section that shows the page with an opaque type overlay with a description of each CSS rule. Something like the Developer tools in IE or FF when you use the "select element by click" function, except that I'm after all elements selected by default (together with the CSS ID). Is there such a thing? http://typetester.maratz.com/ I am not the author, but this is sweet! if there is anyone who knows css really well and is willing to help me figure a few odds and ends up (the css is already made, just 2 problems), i will give you $2 paypal. I know it's not much, but I just need help with 2 problems. my aim is kutekyla if you are interested. I am developing websites using ASP.NET and C# for the code-behind. I just started using css design and I realized after trying to validate my rendered pages that some things in ASP.NET would be VERY difficult to make completely valid. IE: ASP.NET automatically renders this piece of code everytime the page is rendered: Code: <script language="javascript"> <!-- function __doPostBack(eventTarget, eventArgument) { var theform; if (window.navigator.appName.toLowerCase().indexOf("netscape") > -1) { theform = document.forms["frm"]; } else { theform = document.frm; } theform.__EVENTTARGET.value = eventTarget.split("$").join(":"); theform.__EVENTARGUMENT.value = eventArgument; theform.submit(); } // --> </script> That right there is invalid due to the fact that it does not have type="text/javascript" in the <script>. There are many other instances of this that I won't go into detail. In order to fix this you have to override ASP.NET's page rendering methods and do a Regex! thats right, a regex on EACH line of code to replace the line above with valid XHTML. This can become VERY inefficient if you are serving 30+ pages a second. My question is this: at this point is it really worth the performance hit on my web server to make my asp.net sites XHTML compliant? on a side note, I would like to bludgeon the MS designer that wrote these chunks of code into ASP.NET!@!$%#$ thanks! Is there a place where one can find valid doctypes? I have been using the one below for a lot of my design: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> And it has recently come to my attention that this is not pointing to a correct .dtd file. When I do something like this: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> It drastically changes the layout of my page particularily areas where I have specified 100% height. Is there something I'm missing? Where does one find these correct doctypes? My first post.... ok... First I would like to say THANK YOU to anyone who has time to bestow some knowledge to me on what I am sure is a highly noob-esqe situation. I would also like to say that I have thoroughly search this and other forums for my issue, unfortunately I dont think I understand CSS or any web design enough to comprehend the solutions given. I think this may require someone with the knowledge I lack to come down to my level... if you can bend that low.. and walk me thru layman term-style. Again thanks in advance for anytime spent helping out. That being said I was recently trying to jazz up my website that is hosted by a certain music community. I do a decent amount of business thru this site so I wanted to step up the interface a little and get away from using the standard page setup they give you. They do offer the option to edit CSS to construct your own for a little more customization. I jumped in, and after a few days of struggling, I got it looking how I wanted it. I was excited until I realized it looked different on almost every computer i visited the site on. My Background is fine, but the links to paypal and other content is all over the place(e.g. song player, twitter link, buttons) I have tweaked and tweaked, but have not been able to remedy this apparently common problem due to my lack of knowledge and experience. My only hope is to post the coding here and have a Smart Guy/Girl guide me in the right direction. I hope Im not asking too much guys... here goes (I know I can post my url here, how can I redirect you guys to veiw my site??) /********* SoundClick CSS Template (based on custom version Mon, Sep 28 2009) ***********/ Quote: /* general */ body {background: url((MyBGJPEGforbackground)); margin:0px;} body, div,tr,td,select, textarea, input, option {font-family:Verdana; font-size:11px;} a, a:link, a:visited {color:white; text-decoration:none;} a:hover {color:#ff0000; text-decoration:underline;} .pageFooter {clear:both; color:gray; padding:1px 0px 50px 20px;} .infoBox {width:650px; margin:50px auto; background:white; color:black; border:silver solid 1px; padding:30px; font-size:14px;} /* hardly used, its for error messages to user */ .infoBox .quotes {margin:20px; border:#4b4b4b dashed 1px; font-style:italic; padding:10px; background:;} /* main containers */ .mainTable {background: url((MainTableBGPicWentHere)) ; color:#999999; width:750px; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; text-align:center;} .mainContent {background:url(/images/siteNav/transbgblocks/black/bg_0.png); color:#999999; width:725px; float:left; overflow:hidden; margin:0px 0px 20px 5px;} /* IE6 doesnt support our preferred overflow:visible */ /* left navigation */ .navigation {background:url(/images/siteNav/transbgblocks/black/bg_0.png); color:white; width:300px; float:left; overflow:hidden; margin:10px 0px 20px 0px;} .navigation a:link, .navigation a:visited {color:#999999;} .navigation a:hover {color:#ffffff;} .navigationDivider {height:6px; line-height:6px; border-bottom:#232323 dashed 1px; margin-bottom:6px;} /* general elements */ .headline {background:transparent; color:transparent; font-weight:bold; border-bottom:transparent dashed 0px; border-top:transparent solid 0px; padding:330px 1px 50px 50px;} .headlineBig {font-size:22px; font-weight:normal;} .headlineSuppl {float:right; margin:0px 0px 0px 100px; color:#666666; font-size:11px; font-weight:normal;} /* for text/links on the right side of main headline (e.g. song count on main page) */ .headlineSuppl a:link, .headlineSuppl a:visited {color:#666666; text-decoration:none;} .headlineSuppl a:hover {color:black; text-decoration:underline;} .pageturner {background:; color:#cccccc; border:#4b4b4b solid 1px; text-align:right; padding:10px; font-size:13px; font-weight:normal;} /* pages menu (previous, next..), e.g. on music page, message board */ .pageturner .nonactive {color:#666666;} .pageturner a:link, .pageturner a:visited {color:#cccccc; text-decoration:none;} .pageturner a:hover {color:#ff0000; text-decoration:underline;} .listedPicsBox {border:#4b4b4b solid 1px; width:114px; height:160px; overflow:hidden; padding:2px 1px 4px 1px; margin:0px 4px 10px 4px; float:left; font-size:11px; text-align:center;} .listedPics {width:110px; height:125px; background-position: center center; background-repeat: no-repeat; margin:2px 0px 4px 0px; overflow:hidden} .breaker {height:1px; line-height:1px; clear:both} /* general color and font assets */ .color_supplemental {color:#666666;} /* used e.g. for song pages comments count */ .alternateBG0 {background:none;} /* used as background colors for comments */ .alternateBG1 {background:none;} /* alternate color */ /* main page (the default entry page) */ .mainContent .contHeadline {clear:left; font-size:16px; color:#cccccc; padding:1px 0px 2px 20px;} /* interview questions */ .mainContent .contText {clear:left; padding-left:15px;} .mainContent .contInterview {clear:left; padding-left:30px;} .mainContent .newsBox {clear:both; background:transparent; color:white; border:transparent solid 0px; margin:6px 20px 0px 20px; padding:100px;} /* main page: video box (different from video page) */ .videoBox_mainPage {padding:5px; margin:0px 100px 20px 100px;} .videoBox_mainPage .video {padding:5px; margin-bottom:10px;} .videoBox_mainPage .title {font-size:15px; text-align:center; margin-bottom:3px;} .videoBox_mainPage .shareLinks {float:right; padding:2px; border-bottom:#4b4b4b dashed 1px;} .videoBox_mainPage .labels {color:#666666; width:100px; padding-right:20px; text-align:right; float:left;} .videoBox_mainPage .info {padding-left:120px;} .videoBox_mainPage a:link, .videoBox_mainPage a:visited {font-size:13px; font-weight:normal; text-decoration:none;} .videoBox_mainPage a:hover {text-decoration:underline;} /* main page: upcoming shows */ .liveshowsBox {background:#cccccc; color:#000000; width:300px; margin:15px 2px 15px 10px; float:right; clear:right;} .liveshowsItems {padding:4px 0px 0px 0px; font-size:11px; clear:both;} .liveshowsBox a:link, .liveshowsBox a:visited {color:#000000; text-decoration:none;} .liveshowsBox a:hover {color:#666666; text-decoration:underline; cursorointer;} /* main page: standard song box on artist page (only this song box or the embedded player is used. However, the menu bar displays about 10 pixels lower in Firefox than it does in IE. <a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)">Link</a> I checked the margins, padding but can not seem to find a way to get the menu to display at the same position in both browsers. Any guidance is very appreciated. thanks. I'm using the max-width in IE in my site - specifically I'm using it to set the minimum height of certain elements. Now that it has become a key part of my design, I realized that it generates errors in the W3 validator. Does anyone know a valid way to use the min-height that will work with IE? Are there any? I am using the 'body:nth-of-type' hack at the moment and it is the one error when i validate my css. Any help much appreciated! I triedThis one aswell but again the css won't validate. I know there must be more i haven't tried but i was wondering if someone would be so kind and save me the effort of finding one that validates?? p.s. i am new at this... be kind!! Originally, I used <DIV> as containers for background images which swap when you hover over them. I enclosed the <DIV> tags with <A> tags to make them 'links'. Older versions of IE didn't want to work with this though and I found it this is invalid CSS, so I explored some more... The best solution I have found so far is to use <A> itself as a container. This solved the IE5 problems, but now IE4 SP2 doesn't show them at all. I'm okay with leaving IE4 behind, but I discovered that using <A> tags as containers was an invalid technique. If I can't use <A><DIV> and I can't use <A>, then what can I use to make valid, preloaded CSS image rollovers that work? I'm not considering Javascript an option. Is it possible? Here's a random, simliar example of what I've done with the <A> tags. http:// www. findmotive. com /2006/10/31/simple-css-image-rollover/ So my page is valid strict xhtml 1.0, and valid css 2, yet it looks so messed up in FF. I can't figure out why. http://www.drowninginmytears.org/index.php It looks perfect in IE, but totally messed up in FF Can anyone help? Thanks. This could be a tough one... I have trawled the search engines for a solution, but I don't think I'll find one. What I want to know is is it possible to create a dropdown navigation menu without using Javascript? I've seen an example of how it can be done with CSS, but the author said that it will not validate. Thanks in advance Andy The following script has been validated and is working fine (not in IE/Win): body { margin-top:5px; margin-bottom:5px; padding:0; background:#ccffff; } a { text-decoration: none; } a:link { color: #0000ff; } a:visited { color: #33cc00; } t{line-height:36px;} #wrap { width:613px; left:50%; margin-left:-336px; background:#ffffff; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; } #sidebar { position:absolute; float:left; width:150px; border: 1px solid #000033; padding:15px; background:#ffffff; height:650px; z-index:1; } #main { float:right; width:390px; border: 1px solid #000033; overflow: auto; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size:13px; text-align:left; padding-top:20px; padding-right:20px; padding-bottom:20px; padding-left:20px; background:#ffffff; background-repeat:no-repeat; background-position:66% 540px; background-image:url(smalljester.jpg); height:750px; overflow:auto; z-index:2; } I'm still trying to figure out why it works. In particular, there are two margin-left tags in the #wrap div, one is -336 px and the other auto. I seem to remember this had to do with centering the layout (the negative margin) but how is it valid with two margin-left properties? TIA [I'd post the html from the dozen or so pages this is working on but there are too many urls.] I have a search box/button I want to keep on a single line in a tool bar on my page in strict XHTML/CSS. The <form> tag produces a line break beforehand. In old HTML I could put the <form> tag outside of the table row or data tags, but XHTML does not allow that (bad nesting). I found in devshed here to use style="display:inline;" which works! But the page does not validate as strict XHTML/CSS (using validator.w3.org). <table><tr><td> <!-- simplified to illustrate!! --> <form method="get" action="..." style="display:inline;"> <input type="text" name="q" size="10" maxlength="255" value="" /> <input type="submit" name="sa" value="go" /> </form> </td></tr></table> The Error and reason given is below. It seems that you can not have a block-level element (<input>) within in inline-level element (<form>). *** document type does not allow element "input" here; missing one of "p", "h1", "h2", "h3", "h4", "h5", "h6", "div", "pre", "address", "fieldset", "ins", "del" start-tag. The mentioned element is not allowed to appear in the context in which you've placed it; the other mentioned elements are the only ones that are both allowed there and can contain the element mentioned. This might mean that you need a containing element, or possibly that you've forgotten to close a previous element. One possible cause for this message is that you have attempted to put a block-level element (such as "<p>" or "<table>") inside an inline element (such as "<a>", "<span>", or "<font>"). *** Does anyone know how to code this to not have the linebreak and still maintain strict XHTML/CSS code? Hi guys Please help me out. This webpage should look like this: But in some browsers the photograph (bottom right hand floating DIV with background image) does not load! WHY?! Thanks! |
