CSS - Onstraining Text/content In A Div Area That Can Vary In Size ????
Hi,
Can anyone recommend how best to how to dynamically constrain amount of Text/Content in a DIV area that can vary in size?? That is, say you have: (a) a content (DIV) area on your view that can expand/contract depending upon browser size ( i.e. when someone is re-sizing the browser window) and (b) dynamic text/content that is to be displayed, based upon user input - e.g. image a defined area/size for several user comments for example. Users can create their own comments, but you only want them to be able to take up a given amount of screen resource, and then perhaps have a "...more" link at the bottom if they go over. How can I best setup this up? e.g. (1) How to setup the layout/CSS so that if more text / content is present in the DIV area that can be displayed that the DIV area doesn't expand due to the extra content the user put forward, and/or (2) Do I need to also complete this by programming what content comes out? E.g. in Ruby on Rails say then the question would be how to calculate how much text/content can fit in the current size of the DIV (noting browser re-sizing) so that you get the chance to put the "...more" link at the bottom? Hopefully this approach isn't required. Any other suggestions welcome that address what I'm trying to do are welcome, which is really offering a area for display of user feedback where each piece of feedback has a maximum area it can take on the main screen only, and also that browser re-sizing is possible. Tks Greg Similar Tutorialsi want to add styles to the text area content such as bold, itallic, indent, color and size (like our fourms Post new Thread text area). how is it possible wating for ur reply bye I was wondering whether there is someway to fix the area of a content in CSS so that it wont expand if too much text was entered, just similar to the html code that fixes the area of the table. i.e. Code: <table style="table-layout: fixed;"> This code lets the table stay in a fixed size no matter how much text is entered... is there a way to have a different background image in the .content area on different pages? this is the site: http://bradleyrose.net/WaterStreetRestaurant/pages/catering&parties.html cobble-stone-road-4.jpg is used on all pages, is there a way to use a different image on some pages? Here's the url Template Any comments on the code will be very helpfull. Even if it is out of topic. In IE it looks pretty good. In firefox the border goes under the large image and the image navigation is left there naked on the body background. hello all, i recently tried to implement a layout which fills the available screenspace, with the main content area as scrolling box. I thought i succeeded, because firefox shown no problem, but when looked in IE, IE is very slow to render it, making it just unusable. I've been looking for a way around ,but i'm out of luck so far, so i thought i'd seek advise on this forum. Maybe you can tip me in the right direction ! An image is worth a thousand words, so please have a look at the attached image, it summarizes the screen structure. As you can see, the only scrollable area is the center orange zone : "viewport". thank you for your time and help ! Alexandre Hey everyone. I have a parent div that I write to using javascripts innerHTML. It works fine for text and <p>'s and stuff, but if I fill it with other div's it doesn't grow accordingly... For example this would work... <div id="parentDiv"> <p>this parentDiv div would grow and grow as i add more stuff</p> </div> This next example doesn't seem to work.... <div id="parentDiv"> <div id="childDiv"> <p>why won't parentDiv grow as its childDiv grows!!?!?!?</p> </div> </div> Should this work? Thoughts? Hello... My name is Matt and I'm looking for some help with what could be simple CSS coding. I designed an image using Adobe Photoshop and I plan on uploading it to my website. What I want to try do is make this image after I upload it, to a like certain table. I wasnt sure what the terminology would be for this. I want my image to be the text area instead of using a large textarea code I want the image to be the text area where the text will scroll up and down within the image. I dont want my image to be the background. specifically I need the image itself to be the scrolling text area. Can anyone help me out with this coding? Or steer me in the right direction of terminology for this? I'd appreciate it... Thanks the contents of a div have an undetermined size, it varies. I need to vertically center it as well as horizontally, which I can do the latter of. I can't use padding or margins because I don't know the size. How do I do this? i have a base page that i use for a multi-page site, but i'd like to be able to insert more and more content, and have the page size accordingly. i think the problem is that the content is technically floating...or something, it's a cold fusion search result in a cart. i don't know, i might be asking for a miracle here- if you have an idea, let me know. Hi I've got a testpage, with everything removed except the problem which occurs in Firefox http://ied.gospelcom.net/tester.php There is a mouseover popup, which is toggled from hidden to visible by onmouseover on some of the table cells. The CSS for this is #reportalert {visibility:hidden;} This is not a javascript problem because it happens with js disabled. I have removed the JS toggle script from this page, so you won't even see this happen. As soon as I have the div with id="reportalert" anywhere on the page, its presence prevents a cursor appearing in the textarea. It does, in fact, have focus, because you can type in it. But it is disconcerting not to appear to have focus. It is as if the 'visibility:hidden' of the div somehow leaks out to affect the cursor. I have tried all sort of things, such as putting visibility:visible on the text area, or its whole TD. Any other ideas I could try? thanks Tony When content exceeds the window size, the fixed footer covers it. The center div has a min-width, the right div covers it when the window is resized to smaller than the min. (Also, center div drops in IE). I have googled these issues and searched the archives. I've tried many different techniques for getting these things in order, and this is the closest I've gotten so far. What I want: 1.A footer that sticks to the bottom of the viewport if there is not enough content AND stays below the container when the container is longer than the viewport. 2. The center div to be liquid with a min-fixed width and the right div to move along the edge of the center div and not cover it when viewport is sized smaller than the center div's min width. Here is a simplified version of the HTML (none of the extra divs that are used to make rounded corners) Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" /> <title>Troubleshooting</title> <link rel="stylesheet" href="layout8.css" type="text/css" /> <link rel="stylesheet" href="round.css" type="text/css" /> </head> <body> <div id="header"> <div id="masthead"></div> <div id="topnav"><div class="searchbar">Search</div> <div class="homebar"><span>Home </span></div></div> </div> <div id="container"> <div id="left"></div> <div id="right"></div> <div id="content"></div> </div> <div class="clear"> </div> </div> <div id="footer"></div> </body> </html> I think there's too much CSS to post here, but everything can be found at: www. observera. com/troubleshootingpage/index. htm CSS @ layout.css and round.css I appreciate any help you can offer Em Hi I'm working ona site at the moment: (URL address blocked: See forum rules) The site is fine up to now, however when I change the size of the text in my browser settings to larger in firefox it ruins the look of the page, ie it puts everything out. Is there a way I can design the page elements so that they can accommodate larger text size and expand? At the moment all of the elements use jpeg images created in photoshop. Thanks for any help! I have a website created with absolute positioning. So when someone increases the font of the text on the page (with the view menu for the browser), some of my text may run outside of the images that they are placed over. I had this problem with IE as well as firefox, but set all of the text with font-size in my CSS file. Now IE works perfectly, but in firefox, the size of the text can still be increased, thus, making the text expand outside of the images. How can I prevent this in firefox? Second question... is there a way to set the size of the actual bullets themselves to a set size so they dont increase/decrease? I'm referring to the bullets, and not the text beside the bullets... I may go with images for the bullets, but was trying to prevent that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. I've been using a 3 column fluid layout and so far so good - works in all browsers and resolutions with some standard hacks... Except with huge text sizes in Firefox. I've used ems all the way and was wondering what the majority of people do when considering how much work to put in to ensure that people with really really poor eyesight can actually get the same experience as everyone else. I tried expanding the text size on dozens of major websites and it appears there probably is some limit where it's not worth considering fixing overflowing divs on large text size. So what does everyone else do? Is this the right place to ask? Hi all, Just an opinion I would like to get from the folks here. For example: Let say you create a navigation bar thats contained within a div. You make a background image that is gradient from top to middle to bottom - dark/light/dark. You add your text links and align them over the middle lighter area of the div background, looks great. Now do you compensate for someone using a different text size? Maybe creating 3 different DIVS - two to fade from dark to light both ways, and the middle one being the light color of the gradient to hold the text? Or do you just forget about it and let the background repeat if the font size changes? This is one of those pet peave things of mine, where I'd create images for links and have the peace of mind that my design won't be broken. I made a new site design in pure css, that in my opinion looks sweet, but I'm ready to trash it and go back to a table/image heavy design because I can't have absolute control of how it will look with all the variables considered. Would love to hear opinions! I'm in need of help in this CSS coding. I used class to divine different font styles in the same page. But my question is how to set a standard or force a fix font size to the browser. HEre is an example of a website whereby when I use the IE's View -> Text Size -> Largest or Smallest option, it doesn't change the font size! http://www.htmlite.com I've looked at its css file and I still can't find a clue to which code which makes the font size stays as it is. Anyone can help, please?? Hi, This is only happens in IE, in firefox (the only 2 browsers I tested) works fine. http://nazgulled.no.sapo.pt/test.html There's only one image inside the <div> tag, and I have set that div tag style to have a 10px height. But that doesn't work on IE... it's like there were some spaces wich because of the font-size it makes the height be more than 10px.... I wanted to fix that but how can I do it? One solution is to make the div tag like this: Code: <div id="test"><img src="spect.gif" width="300" height="10" /></div> instead of this: Code: <div id="test"> <img src="spect.gif" width="300" height="10" /> </div> But I don't want to fix it that way... Any help would be hot, thanks. I have this problem making this menu and I have multible <h1></h1> on each title of the of stuff. It seems that the text gets bigger and bigger then when its to big then the text in the <h1> goes back smaller. Is there a way to fix this? Here is my code. Code: h1 { font-family: cursive, sans serif; font-weight: normal; font-size: 200%; font-style: cursive;} EDIT:The strange thing is that I know of this wird effect only happens in IE. Thank you, sorry to be a bother but I do want to have a good first impression on my site that I am working for Ernies Bar & Grill at my town. Hey, wondering if any of you could help me with regards to syntax needed in CSS (im guessing) to make text fields in a form taller and wider? Thanks,Sean |
