CSS - Sidebar Spanning Height Difficulties
Hey guys, I was wondering if you could enlighten me on the right way to do this.
URL On this CSS blog I'm designing for a friend, I'm trying to get the leafy sidebar to span the height of the content. My CSS for the property is: #sidebar { float: left; background: #589f45 url(images/sidebar.gif) repeat-y; height: 100%; width: 44px; } I have a feeling that the height: 100% property is causing the problem. When you look at the site, the sidebar repeats exactly one page-length and stops. The HTML markup for the page: <div id="sidebar"></div> <div id="header"></div> <div id="topbar"></div> <div id="blog"> Test<br />... </div> <div id="footer"></div> All of the other IDs are floated left. Do you guys have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking! Similar TutorialsHow's it going, If you look at this link below, you'll see how one of the images below is larger than the content area and thus goes over into the sidebar...which looks really wack. http://www.sustainablelivingrealest...-home-for-sale/ Is there a way to confine all images so they don't spew over, without actually resizing each image in Photoshop? Thanks in advance. Hello all, Perhaps it is just because I've been working all day but I cannot remember how to do this. My site is http://www.geocities.com/lokisapocalypse/debug/index.html . I almost have it set up the way I want it but how do I get the three columns to all be the same height? I'm a bit of a CSS newbie but I try. How do you get the sidebars' height to synchronize with the height of your content? I tried height=100% but it doesn't seem to work. If I put a lot of text in my content, it stretches down but the sidebars remain the same height, making the layout looking ugly. I don't want to have to press enter in my sidebars to match the content's height all the time! Here's my code: <style type="text/css"> #container { width: 100%; border: 1px solid gray; margin: 0px auto; } #banner { padding: 0px; background-color: #CDC8F1; } #content { padding: 5px; background-color: #FFFFFF; } #sidebar-a { float: left; margin: 0; padding: 0px; background-color: rgb(235, 235, 235); height: 100%; } #sidebar-b { float: right; margin: 0; padding: 0px; background-color: rgb(235, 235, 235); height: 100%; } #footer { clear: both; padding: 5px; background-color: rgb(213, 219, 225); } body { margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; } </style> This is my first completely css site and I am having troubles with my main content areas and some other small minor things. My design requires that the sidebar be the same height as my content area. What do I need to do to get them the same heights. The main content area changes on each page so my sidebar needs to do the same. Here is the website. I guess I cannot post url's so I hope I made sense. Also an example of what the site is going to look is here. Once again cannot post urls. Also, I need help with lists. In the example image I have the lists side-by-side. Normally I would use a table for this. Is there a way to do this with css? Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks, Shaun I am presently creating a website for a friend of mine who's a model and wants her own website, I have decided to make it using xhtml and css. The problem that I am having is that I would like to have a footer which is at the very end of the page no matter how much content there is to the page. I have uploaded the code to here When this page is viewed in IE the footer is displayed at the bottom of the screen although the content carries on after the footer. When this page is viewed in Firefox the footer is displayed just below the bottom of the screen although again the content carries on after the footer. I have Googled this and tried out a couple of the suggested ways of getting the page to work and it just doesn't appear to want to work, so I am obviously doing something wrong :s Does anyone have any idea how I would be able to get the footer to stay at the very bottom of the webpage? Also if you look at the website you will see that the navigation sidebar only goes down as far as its content, I would prefer it if the sidebar went down to the footer (which will hopefully be at the bottom of the webpage). Again does anyone have any idea how I would be able to get it to do this. I'd like to make a 2-column layout where each column fills the height of the container div, and the container div's height is determined by the longest div within it... this is getting a bit confusing, because I can't have one being determined by the other one with that one being determined by the first, if that makes sense? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks Hi, I have hit the "wall" in my knowledge of CSS while trying to implement a "flex-width-equal-height-sidebar-layout" style of layout as a skin/theme for a message board system and need some help. My trouble occurs when a direct link to the post is used (instead of following the menu navigation system) where the top menu information/links area (the area between the banner and the post) is chopped off... The relevant portion of the CSS seems to be the .col_wrap {margin-top: 10px; border: 0; overflow: hidden; float: left; width: 100%; position: relative; z-index: 10; clear: both;} portion of my CSS because if I take out the overflow:hidden declaration then the menu portion of the skin/theme/layout shows correctly but the sidebar the shows the part which should be hidden at the bottom and the footer completely vanishes from view! My apologies but this is the best I can do without having the ability to post pics or urls which could better explain what is wrong and frankly speaking I don't know how anyone here can help given my inability to show the problem but hopefully someone knows or has run into this problem before or can offer some resources that may be of assistance.... hi, I have 2columns with varying heights. and then I have a div below which spans the width of both. If the right column is taller than the left there is no problem. The underneath div falls under it by 5px. But when the left columns is taller than the right. The column underneath still falls 5px below the right column, but the div below is underneath the left column. anyone know how to get the div below to go 5px below whichever div is tallest? heres the css: PHP Code: #leftColumn { float: left; margin: 10px;; width: 300px; padding: 0; } #register { margin: 20px 0 10px 330px; border: 1px solid #ccc; width: 396px; background: #fff; } #prodBreak { margin: 0 10px; padding: 0; border-top: dashed #666 1px; border-right: solid #ccc 1px; border-bottom: none; border-left: solid #ccc 1px; background: #fff url(../images/break.gif) repeat-x; width: 720px; height: 50px; } ta, if you dont understand the explanation please let me know and ill draw a picture I'm trying to set a background image that spans from edge to edge in my browser window. Currently, I have everything set up and positioned as I'd like, but the image stops just short of reaching the very edges of the browser window on the left and right sides. The image itself is 2000px wide, so that various browser widths show the continuation of the image. You can see the problem I have at URL Notice the blue lines on either side aren't quite making it to the edge of the browser. The relevant CSS is located at URL The .main div at the bottom is the one with the background image code. Thank you for any help offered. Okay, so a while ago a create a simple web page using only CSS and <div> among other assorted tags - bascially, a tableless layout. Recently, however, it has been displaying weird in IE6, and has never displayed correctly in Firefox. The content is supposed to float right, right next to the sidebar, but instead induces a return then floats right. I think this may have to do with block-level elements, but I am not sure. Also, there seems to be problems with my line-height and <h1> within .content in Firefox, but not Internet Explorer. I did submit my XHTML to W3C and it returned fine. My CSS returned no errors, but warnings, quoted below. I have images to show my problems since the site is no longer up; however, it has irked me lately that I haven't figured out a solution to this problem. Forgive me if I made a stupid mistake, as I haven't touched CSS in a few months and am still "refreshing" my memory on it - but even so, I couldn't pinpoint this problem while I still had my finger on CSS pretty well. These imaged will be linked, since they are enormous. IE6 Firefox-Part 1 Firefox-Part 2 And now, finally, my stylesheet and XHTML document. XHTML document CSS file Forgive me, again, if it's a REALLY stupid mistake, but I can't figure out the problem and seeing as I'm the one assigned to make a web site for a school project, I'd like to know what I did wrong so I won't make the same mistake again. I managed to figure out what was wrong with the script in the XHTML document (not corrected in this version, though) so this would be getting a real big monkey off my back. As you can see, there are alignment issues in addition to the detestable return problem. And yes, I did try making .content "display:inline;" same with one of the sidebar classes, to no avail... EDIT: I just realized that the IE pic is cut off - the only problem with this version is that the side content seen in Firefox 2 is not floated to the right of the .sidebar correctly. So it's the same as Firefox 2 basically. Hi I am trying to make a table to display some stuff within a fix sized window. I want to have 5 columns of fixed width and one column that spans the rest of the remaining space. The Idea is to allow the widths of the first 5 columns to be changed by a script and having the last one adapting as needed... html Code: Original - html Code <div class="container"><table cellspacing="0"> <colgroup> <col width="40" /> <col width="220" /> <col width="120" /> <col width="65" /> <col width="40" /> </colgroup> <thead> <tr> <th>A</th> <th>B</th> <th>C</th> <th>D</th> <th>E</th> <th style="width: 100%;></th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td>1</td> <td>2</td> <td>3</td> <td>4</td> <td>5</td> <td style="width: 100%;></td> </tr> </tbody> </table></div> <div class="container"><table cellspacing="0"> <colgroup> <col width="40" /> <col width="220" /> <col width="120" /> <col width="65" /> <col width="40" /> </colgroup> <thead> <tr> <th>A</th> <th>B</th> <th>C</th> <th>D</th> <th>E</th> <th style="width: 100%;></th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td>1</td> <td>2</td> <td>3</td> <td>4</td> <td>5</td> <td style="width: 100%;></td> </tr> </tbody> </table></div> css Code: Original - css Code div.container { height: 400px; width: 800px; overflow: scroll; } table { width: 100%; } td { border-style: solid; border-color: silver; border-width: 0px; padding: 1px 3px; } th { border-style: outset; border-color: silver; border-width: 2px; background: silver; padding: 1px 3px; }
It really does fill the entire space but the last column crushes all the other into their minimal width resulting in linebreaks between words inside the cells... Please help me Hello everyone, I've been working on my school website for some time now - but I recently started over where the markup and style sheets are concerned. Both my html and css validate. Hi all, I am trying to automate everything on my test website and I have one more angle to cover. In effect, I want to adjust the line-height property (which I can do) based on the number of files within a specific folder (PHP and already done). The more files in the folder, the lower the line-height value must be. This is to ensure if I copy additional files into the folder, then the navigation menu (which is PHP reading files in this particular folder) will alter the CSS line-height property accordingly to ensure it can never exceed a certain height. Sounds wierd? go to www.re3.org.uk (next to the RE3 image, I have a list of hyperlinks which are obtained from files within the folder) My problem, when adjusting the CSS property (which is set as cm in *.css file) in javascript, it doesn't correspond correctly, the line-height property in javascript doesn't appear to be work in cm but some other measurement. Does anyone know how to change what unit of measurement Javascript works in? Or does anyone know what unit of measurement javascript uses when adjusting line-height / line-width values? I want to create a mini-algorithm that works out the appropriate line-height based on the image height (got that already) and the number of files in the folder (got that too) so the menu automatically adjusts to fit. Whew! Hello everybody! I have been having a big problem with my webpage for a long time now and hope I can find an answer to my problem with your help. I want a div that contains the content of my pages (which varies in length depending on the individual page) to stretch the length of my page, but it only stretches the length of the window. Here's the HTML and CSS: HTML (I only included the very basic structure): <html> <body> <div class="container"> <div id="content"> <div id="..."></div> <div id="..."></div> <div id="..."></div> <div id="..."></div> </div> </div> </body> </html>` CSS: html, body { height: 100%; font-family: Arial; font-size: 10px; color: #000000; background: #FFF url(../../images/body.png) no-repeat center 40px; margin: 0; position: relative;} .container { height: 100%; width: 960px; margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; position: relative;} #content { width: 939px; min-height: 100%; position: relative; top: 210px; left: 6px; box-shadow: 0px 0px 8px #666; -moz-box-shadow: 0px 0px 8px #666; -webkit-box-shadow: 0px 0px 8px #666; background-color: #FFF;} I tried to set the content div to overflow: auto, but that includes a scroll bar for the content div that I do not want. It does, however, create the desired effect of the shadow and background of the #content div all the way to the end of the page. Am I missing anything? I thought min-height would work, but it doesn't! It only stretches the content div to page height and everything else is overflow, but without the content div's background color and shadow. Does anybody maybe see where the problem lies? Thank you so much in advance for your help. Hello Just recently I had an idea for a page I wanted to make, the design is basically a 3-column layout with no traditional header or footer, the height of all three columns should run the length of the window/page height the left and rightmost column would have a fixed width or a width in em, the center column width should fill the space in between. If the content is short all columns should extend to the height of the page window, but if the content in any of the columns is longer than the window height they should all extend to reach the bottom of the page and accommodate the content length In my first attempt things didn't go so well, results varied wildly across browsers so I decided to start from scratch bit by bit Bellow is the point at which I reach consistent but undesired behaviour, I have validated and tested the code in Firefox 3/Pale Moon, Internet Explorer 8, Chromium 9, and Opera 11 I would like the end result to work in the above browsers as well as IE7 if possible I should point out now that im not interested in using faux-columns, the layout should not require images, I also wish to have absolute-positioned elements in the columns some time later Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <title>Three Columns</title> <style type="text/css"> *, html, body { margin: 0; padding: 0; font-size: 100%; } html, body { width: 100%; height: 100%; } #maincontainer { position: relative; height: 100%; background: #eee; } #left { position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 200px; background: #fbb; height: 100%; } #mid { position: relative; margin: 0 200px 0 200px; background: #efe; height: 100%; } #right { position: absolute; top: 0px; right: 0px; width: 200px; background: #bbf; height: 100%; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="maincontainer"> <div id="left"> left start<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left end<br /> </div> <div id="mid"> mid start<br /> mid<br /> mid<br /> mid<br /> mid<br /> mid<br /> mid end<br /> </div> <div id="right"> right start<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right end<br /> </div> </div> </body> </html> In the above example it works as long as the content within the columns is shorter than the window height, but if you re-size the window so that the text in the right or left column goes beyond the page, and then scroll to the bottom, the columns do not extend to the bottom of the page so there is a large gap where the content overflows beyond the column What I would like to do from this point is make the columns extend to the bottom of the page when this happens, but I'm not sure how best to proceed I also have a version of the above code which uses floated left and right columns instead of absolute positioned ones, would it be better to work from that? or does it not really matter Thanks in advance It seem that everytime I added the image tag, the div'x area get bigger in IE but not in Mozilla/Firefox browser. So, I thought by added the "margin-bottom:-360px;" to the div would fix it but it had an opposite effect. Meaning it worked in IE but Mozilla show a vertical scrollbar. So, does anyone know how can I make the <img> overlap one another without being stacked on one after another in height for IE if I take out the "margin-bottom: -360px;"? Thanks... Code: div.divBox1 { width: 286px; height: 359px; float: left; } div.divClearFloat { clear: both; height: 0px; /* For IE Stupidity (it added some spaces after clearing the float) */ font-size: 1pt; /* For IE Stupidity (minimum height only work with current font-size somewhere) */ } div.divDottedLineAdvertisementSeperator1 { width: 575px; height: 3px; background-color: #ff0000; font-size: 1pt; /* For IE Stupidity (minimum height only work with current font-size somewhere) */ } Code: <div class="divBox1"> <div style="margin-bottom:-360px;"> <img src="images/doctor.jpg" style="position:relative;top:0px;left:0px;z-index:2;"> <img src="images/we_help.jpg" style="position:relative;top:-360px;left:0px;z-index:1;"> </div> </div> <div class="divClearFloat"></div> <div class="divDottedLineAdvertisementSeperator1"></div> I've never done much CSS work, but I know this has to be an easy fix. Each DIV appears to be 10px higher when viewed in IE. I want them to be 8px high and they end up being 18px high. In Firefox, Netscape, and Opera it works fine. Anyone mind correcting this imbarrassing little problem? Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" > <head> <title>IE 10px Padding Problem</title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <style type="text/css"> body { margin:0px; } #container { position:relative; margin:auto; width:730px; } #header { height:110px; } .textualtop { border:1px solid #000000; height:8px; } .textualbottom { border:1px solid #000000; height:8px; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="container"> <div id="header"></div> <div class="textualtop"></div> <div class="textualbottom"></div> <div class="textualtop"></div> <div class="textualbottom"></div> <p>Notice how in IE6 each DIV is 10px higher then in FF. Why is it doing this?</p> </div> </body> </html> I'm trying to have a sidebar to the right of my page content that extends the entire height of the container it is in. Code: .sidebar { padding: 0px; margin: 0px; width: 150px; height: 100%; color: #999999; background: #ffffff; float: right; border-top: none; border-left: 1px solid #cccccc; border-bottom: none; border-right: none; } This is the code I am currently using, but it is only as tall as the contents of the div. I need the border on the left to extend the length of the container it is in. Any ideas? Thanks, Scott I have three questions. 1. I saw some site which cut if there is a wide picture on side bars, like it just show the part which is on the sidebar box if its wider it cuts the extra part like this site if you see the first picture on the side bar its bigger but it cuts the extra part (-http://dot21.blogspot.com/-) , i want to know how to do it. 2. When some people add backgrounds they write background-repeat:no-repeat whats the function of that code??? and what can i write instead of no-repeat?? 3. whats the function of this code (background-position:bottom left) ??? If you couldnt answer some i hope you answer the ones you know. I am working on a site in CSS (first time! Yay!) I am having one problem: there is a sidebar, and I have used spacer images to make the coloring go to the very bottom of the page (the links stop above that). HOWEVER: this is for my screen size, and I am worried that when people view it with a different screen/window size, they will have scroll bars, even though there is no content at the bottom. Is there any attribute that will make it just go right to the bottom? Thanx. |
