CSS - Firefox And Horizontal Rules
I'm using this for a horizontal rule, I'm after a 1 pixel blue line...
Code: hr { border: 0; width: 98%; height: 1px; color: #003366; } But while I get what I'm after in IE, in Firefox there is nothing, zip, no line at all. What's wrong? Similar TutorialsHey all, What are your techniques for making unique horizontal rules? At the moment I am using this code to separate content: Code: /* CSS */ .line { height: 5px; background-image: url(../img/bg_3x7.gif); background-repeat: repeat-x; background-position: left top; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: auto; padding: 0px; } Html: Code:

The above code works great for all non IE-PC browsers... when I view on PC with IE, there appears to be 5px of padding added to top and bottom... is very annoying... IE is a POS, I hate IE... Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions for a more universal way to get a unique
on a page? I would prefer something that will be an exact height in any browser/platform. Cool cool cool, Thanks! Cheers Micky See the last post for the solution. Before I get to the CSS and the markup, some background info: I am rebuilding a web-based database to be all-CSS (except for the tabular data, of course). I want to make it accessible in Safari, Firefox/Mac and Firefox/Win. Anything else would be a plus but is not necessary. The markup relies heavily on PHP. The problem lies with a horizontal nav bar I have at the top of every page. I'm using a modified version of the Suckerfish Dropdown that you can find on either HTML Dog or A List Apart. In Safari, this works to perfection. In Firefox/Mac, the alignment is a little off (which I'll fix later), but other than that works pretty well. In Firefox/Win, this absolutely blows up all over the place. There are a lot of symptoms to describe, so for now I'll provide the CSS and the markup, and if more description is necessary, I'll provide it as best I can. Without further ado, here's the CSS for the menu: Code: #main_menu { top: 0; left: 0; position: fixed; width: 100%; background: #D8DCEF; margin: 0; padding: 1px 0; text-align: left; border: 1px dotted #446CB4; border-width: 0 0 1px 1px; } #nav, #nav ul { float: left; list-style: none; padding: 0; margin: 0 2px; font-weight: bold; } #nav a { color: #111; } #nav li, #nav li.search { float: left; padding: 1px 4px; margin: 0 2px; border: 1px solid transparent; background: transparent; text-align: center; } #nav li.search { padding: 0 4px; border: 0; } #nav li:hover { border-color: #3466B1; background: #fff; } #nav li.search:hover { background: transparent; } #nav li span { font-size: 9px; line-height: 11px; } #nav li ul { position: absolute; left: -999em; width: 150px; font-weight: normal; border: 1px solid #3466B1; margin: 1px 0 0 0; } #nav li li { width: 142px; margin: 0; padding: 0 4px; line-height: 1.5em; border: 0; background: #fff; text-align: left; } #nav li li a { display: block; width: 142px; text-decoration: none; padding: 0; } #nav li li a:hover { color: blue; } #nav li ul ul { margin: -1.6em 0 0 150px; } #nav li:hover ul ul, #nav li:hover ul ul ul, #nav li.sfhover ul ul, #nav li.sfhover ul ul ul { left: -999em; } #nav li:hover ul, #nav li li:hover ul, #nav li li li:hover ul, #nav li.sfhover ul, #nav li li.sfhover ul, #nav li li li.sfhover ul { left: auto; } #nav li li:hover, #nav li.sfhover { background: #D8DCEF; } #nav ul.end { width: 300px; } #nav ul.end li, #nav ul.end li a { width: 292px; } #nav ul.long { width: 165px; height: 300px; overflow: auto; } #nav ul.long li, #nav ul.long li a { width: 142px; } #nav li.flyout { background: url(../images/icons/arrow.gif) center right no-repeat #fff; } #nav li.flyout:hover { background: url(../images/icons/arrow.gif) center right no-repeat #D8DCEF; } #nav li.separate { border-top: 1px solid #3466B1; background: #EFF1F9; font-style: italic; } And here's an anonymized version of the markup: Code:

Menu 1

Choice 1

Choice 2

Menu 2

Choice 1

Submenu 2a

Subchoice 1

Subchoice 2

Subchoice 3

Choice 2

Menu 3

Choice 1

Choice 2

Choice 3

Menu 4

Choice 1

Choice 2

When I comment out the main menu, the pages load just fine, so it has to be somewhere in the code for the main menu (or that means it's somewhere else entirely). Thanks in advance for taking the time to look at my code, and any help at all is extremely appreciated. Hello. I've spent the past week making my web page. It is currently hosted on my laptop. When I finalize it, I will upload it to a proper hosting service. I have a job interview for a co-op job for searstravel.ca tomorrow, and I want to make sure my website works across all browsers. My webpage is at URL. If you open the page in IE, you will notice a horizontal white space just beneath the image at the top. In Mozilla (suite/Firefox) and Opera the site displays just fine. I've had the site looked at by a number of friends who are more adept at CSS than me, but to no avail. I was hoping that someone in here might spot the cause of the display bug. The CSS file is located at URL. Thanks for your help everyone! Hi, I have an issue with Vertical menu contained in Re-sizable DIV. This menu appears differently in IE vs Firefox (Please refer attached Image) http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/7830/resize.png URL Attached Image Following is the Code for the Style class mentioned in the image Code: .cwc_navMenuLabel { line-height:14px; vertical-align:top; white-space:nowrap; } .AccButton{ float: right; align:right; text-align: right; position: relative; top: -1px; z-index: 10; width: 16px; margin:0 5px 0 0; } /*USE THIS FOR IE*/ .AccLiIE { display: inline; background-color: #A2C2E4; background-image: url(../../images/acordion_backgr.png); background-repeat: repeat-x; border-top: 1px solid #7591AC; height: 19px; white-space: nowrap; } /*USE THIS FOR NON-IE BROWSER*/ .AccLi { background-color: #A2C2E4; background-image: url(../../images/acordion_backgr.png); background-repeat: repeat-x; border-top: 1px solid #7591AC; white-space: nowrap; } Please let me know the change that i have to do in CSS to make the menu appear in IE the way it looks in Firefox. Thanks and appreciate your help How do I fix this CSS-Firefox Issue? I have a horizontal CSS menu with a width of 400px. There are four elements each with a width of 100px. The height is 50px (if that matters at all). This whole menu is centered using the
tag right outside the
tag which I use to center the menu. The following is the CSS I'm using. It's not fully complete with respect to the images. The problem is that the elements (with a width of 100px) will all line up horizontally as expected in IE, but the fourth element drops off (vertical ~20px vertical shift) in Firefox. I have tried adjusting the width of the
in the CSS and it will bring all the elements on the same horizontal level if I change the width to 500px, but it doesn't center the menu anymore. Is there anyway I could center my menu without the error in Firefox. CSS: #nav {width:400px; list-style:none; overflow:hidden;} #nav ul li {padding: 10px; list-style-type:none; display:inline; /*text-indent: -9999px;*/} #nav a {display:block; float:left; text-decoration:none; outline:none; width:100px; height:35px;background-image: url(MenuBar.gif);} #home {} #home:hover {background-position:0 -100px;} #products #products #history #history #contact #contact #nav a:link {color:blue;} #nav a:hover {color:green;} a {outline:none;} HTML:

Home

Products

History

Contact

[This menu is organized by a large table, hence the 80% width which helps organize the elements of the page] PLEASE Help me. I can't seem to get it working. EDIT: Solved. Hi everybody. I'm attempting to format video thumbnails horizontally across a page, and I'm experiencing some very weird behaviors. A bit of basic background on the site - this is a Drupal 5 site sporting a customized version of the "Lite Jazz" theme. XHTML & CSS are both valid. Basically, I just want to have the thumbnails scroll horizontally from left to right, then break and continue directly underneath. However, I am getting this odd "stair" effect in Firefox (for lack of a better way to put it). The alignment looks fine in IE, however in IE the thumbnail furthest to the right is squashed up against the side of the border. I have attached two screenshots to give you an idea. Below is a sample of the video thumbnail HTML that is output by Drupal and all (what I think is) all of the pertinent CSS styling. Additionally, I am aware that I can combine several of these CSS classes, so there is no literal need for multiple div tags, but these divs are generated by a short series of tpl files, and I don't think they are hurting anything. I could of course be wrong, but it would be hard to really consolidate them they way that the template is structures. Here's the HTML involved: Code:

vid: 48
type: video
status: 1
created: 1207090735

vid: 47
type: video
status: 1
created: 1206652960

vid: 45
type: video
status: 1
created: 1204256880

And the CSS as well.... Code: .node { display: inline; padding: 5px 10px 10px; } .node .content, .comment .content { margin: 0; } .node .taxonomy { font-size: 0.8em; padding-left: 1.5em; } .node .picture { border: 1px solid #ddd; float: right; } .video { border: 1px solid #1e6730; background-color: #beff93; padding: 5px 10px 10px; clear: right; float: left; display: inline; margin: 15px; } #header, #content { width: 100%; } .node .content, .comment .content { margin: 0; I would include a bbcode link to the site, but apparently new users cannot do that (I suppose that makes sense from a spamming standpoint). Site is located at kathleenmackie.com. I also have screenshots from IE and Firefox detailing the problems, but again I apparently can't attach files or images (??). Thanks folks... hoping somebody has an idea or two. Again, I do have screenshots as well..... What are the naming rules for CSS? No numbers in class names? Any other char not OK? Hello I have defined the following rules for anchors: Code: a:link { color: green; text-decoration: none; text-transform: none; list-style-type: disc; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; } a:hover { color: blue; text-decoration: underline; text-transform: none; list-style-type: disc; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; } a:visited { color: orange; text-decoration: none; text-transform: none; list-style-type: disc; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; } a:active { color: red; text-decoration: none; text-transform: none; list-style-type: disc; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; } I have 2 links in the site: Code: 1 Test The first link obeys the rules defined above The second link doesn't obey the hover rule for some reason. My only guess is that triggering JavaScript code from links may cause this problem. I am testing this on IE6 On Mozilla and Opera both links work fine I would appreciate any help I have a site www.carrie-anne.co.nz just refer to index.asp It has 3 css. I have a problem with main.css The problem is minor, but annoying. It is to do with the lhs menu called menucontainer. The menu is a list and the rules applied to it are quite specific. Below menucontainer is contactcontainer and that too has specific rules. What happens is that I am getting the menu text underlined when I state that decoration:none; On further testing by commenting out rules ( so they don't render ) I find that rules for contactcontainer are over-riding menucontainers. Can anyone shed any light? It is driving me spare.. Here is the css file. border-top: none; border-right: none; border-bottom: none; border-left: none; } Hi guys and gals. Right does any one know any CSS specfic Internet Explorer 8 rules that I can run in the CSS sheet. Something like -ie- -msie- would be nice. Also for those of you who have not tried IE8 beta download it , it's really good, ok still bugs to work out fair enough but what I'm really fond of is the built in dev bar that comes as standard, if there is an add-on like Yslow I think I'm going to convert. So the basic rules a 1) Author style sheets 2) User style sheets 3) Default browser sheets Now when you get into Author style sheets... You have: inline styles, header style information (), external style sheets and imported style sheets. I created a little example for myself to figure out the precedence. So that if all of these methods controled the same element, which method's style would come out the winner. To my suprise, the order in which you include them in the HTML document has an impact on the precedence. How so? Up until now I thought that the order of precedence was: inline styles, imported styles, external style sheets (
), and header style information. Code:

What am I?

As expected, the inline style wins. Code:

What am I?

The header style information wins. (regardless of position of @import) Code:

What am I?

External style sheet wins (
). How does position influence precedence of: external style sheets (Both @import and
) and header style information? I was reading that if you wanted to apply the same style to more than one rule, you can use a comma, but I'm having a weird quirk happen when I do that. for example: h1, h2 {color:olive;} For some reason, it's only applying to h2. Even when I place it so that there are no parent elements. I've validated the xhtml and the css. What's the deal? I'm a total newbie to CSS and web design in general. Sorry if I'm using the wrong terms for things. I've just been given the assignment to write a script that given a set of form elements by the user it will create a page with those form elements displayed and a submit button on the bottom. The form elements the user defines can be text fields, text areas, dropdown boxes, option groups, and checkboxes. The user also gives me a title for each form element. He can give me these form elements in any order and I need to display them in that order on the page. My question is, how do I arrange these form elements so they always look good together and I don't have funny gaps or unprofessional looking design? It would be easy if it was just text fields and area, but then I have to throw in option groups and checkboxes that can be any number in a row. Does anyone have some good form organization rules that could help me? Thanks!! Quote: Dan Cederholm of SimpleBits: It's important to note that the cascading effect of CSS still applies, and alternate style sheets work just like any other style sheet, in that only common rules are overridden when the alternate styles are active. So if we had layout, positioning, and other site-wide rules in default.css that weren't repeated in the alternate style sheets, those default rules would still work. I'm making a site that has a default stylesheet with a fixed layout and an alternative one with a fluid layout. The problem I'm having is the alternative sheet not inheriting css from the default stylesheet even though the rules are not overridden. At the moment, my alternative stylesheet is an exact copy of the original (everything included) with only 3 width values changed to percentages. Theoretically, I should be able to only include these three rules alone in the alt sheet, as rules are carried over from the default sheet unless overridden. However, when I do try to reduce the alt sheet to just: Code: #container { width: auto; } #main { width: 65%; } #navbar { width: 30%; } all unincluded formatting is lost. Am I doing something wrong? Cheers, Sam. I am desperate. I think I found a bug in Firefox, and I'm not sure how to work around it. The following code works in everything (IE 8, Chrome, Safari, Opera) except Firefox (version 3.6.3). Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug in Firefox? You can look what happens to the drop-down menu's on Menu 2 and 3 live by going to my site (deenfoxx dot com slash firefox-bug dot html). css Code: Original - css Code #main-nav { background-color: black; height: 40px; } #nav { position: relative; margin: 0; padding: 0; } #nav li { position: relative; float: left; display: table; width: 99px; height: 40px; border-right: 1px solid white; text-align: center; font-size: 10px; } #nav li:hover { background-color: darkred; } #nav a { display: table-cell; vertical-align: middle; line-height: 11px; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; color: #fff; } #nav li ul { position: absolute; padding: 0; background-color: gray; top: 40px; left: 0px; } #nav li ul li { width: 98px; border: 0; border-top: 1px solid white; } #main-nav html4strict Code: Original - html4strict Code

Main Menu 1

Main Menu 2

Sub-Category 1

Sub-Category
with multiple lines

Main Menu 3 with multiple lines

Sub-Category 2

Main Menu item which has a really long name on it

The problem appears to be that "#nav li" happens to have position:relative; and a display:table; and "#nav li ul" is position:absolute;. Normally, absolute positioning requires its parent or ancestor position to be set, but when used with the table display, it doesn't work normally on Firefox--but it does on other browsers. Can someone help me with a workaround that does not involve altering the HTML? If I must, I will accept a workaround that requires changing the HTML, but I'll have to do some heavy duty recoding of Magento's core menu generation. Anyone that knows Magento knows I want to avoid that like the plague--my example is a very simplified version of the problem. Hi this is my first post. I'm having trouble making a horizontal navbar with a picture background. here is the vertical menu. http://school(dot)timswildwackyemporium(dot)com/NewMouseOver/navtest.html replace (dot)s with period I want to make the buttons next to each other, but with about 10px space in between them. Thanks. I've tried the tutorials on CSS menus but can't seem to get it to work right for my project. I want a spacer to seperate the buttons at 1 pixels wide but currently it's about 10 pixels wide. I've adjusted until i'm blue in the face can somebody help? The code is below: Code:

Home

Project Status

Tasks

General Information

Completed Tasks

About

Contact

CSS Code: body, html { margin: 0; } #navcontainer ul { list-style-type: none; text-align: center; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; font-weight: bold; color: #FFFFFF; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; } #navcontainer ul li { display: inline; } #navcontainer ul li a { text-decoration: none; padding: 0.2em 1em; color: #fff; background-image: url(images/back.gif); height: 24px; line-height: 23px; } #navcontainer ul li a:hover { color: #fff; background-color: #960033; background-attachment: fixed; background-repeat: repeat; background-position: center; background-image: url(images/backover.gif); } --- I want to show 2 divs, and allow the user to horizontal scroll (in a surrounding div with overflow:hidden and white-space:nowrap) to the next 2 divs. It works fine if I use images with full widths. But... Issue I'm running into is this, if i use float:left, it wraps the divs to the next line and doesn't expand horizontally past the width of the div. If i use display:inline, i can't set the widths of the divs, and since they are text based, they show up as tiny divs, only the width of the text. So, what would be a solution here? CSS Code: #wrap { padding:30px 0 0 0; width:500px; height:310px; border:1px solid black; white-space:nowrap; overflow:hidden; } #wrap div { display:inline; width:245px; } HTML Code:

and obviously the javascript would be included to allow the div to scroll onlick. But I just need the initial setup of this. |
