CSS - Problems With Vertical Spacing Under Float
Here is the industry news page
I have the picture floating either right or left with text beside it - then a line underneath it. I want the line to always be at least 10px below the picture. When the text is less, the line crosses into the picture. xhtml: Code: <div id="industry"> <h1>Industry News and Information</h1> <div class="row"> <span class="imgLeft"><img src="../images/ATS-ERS_thumb.jpg" width="100" height="100" alt="ERS ATS Logo" /></span> <h2>New single set of standards for ERS and ATS</h2> <p>Through the combined efforts of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the American Thoracic Society (ATS), there is now a new single set of standards for both sides of the Atlantic. <a href="/resources/industry_news/news_ers_ats.html">More ...</a></p> </div> <div class="row"> <span class="imgRight"><img src="../images/ARTP_thumb.jpg" width="112" height="100" alt="COPD Day at Vitalograph" /></span> <h2>Winter ARTP meeting well attended</h2> <p>Vitalograph recently attended the Association for Respiratory Technology and Physiology (ARTP) 3Oth Annual Conference at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Brighton. <a href="/resources/industry_news/news_artp.html">More ...</a></p> </div> <div class="row"> <span class="imgLeft"><img src="../images/ATS-ERS_thumb.jpg" width="100" height="100" alt="ERS ATS Logo" /></span> <h2>New single set of standards for ERS and ATS</h2> <p>Through the combined efforts of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the American Thoracic Society (ATS), there is now a new single set of standards for both sides of the Atlantic. <a href="/resources/industry_news/news_ers_ats.html">More ...</a></p> </div> <div class="rowLast"> <span class="imgRight"><img src="../images/COPDdayoffice_thumb.jpg" width="99" height="98" alt="COPD Day at Vitalograph" /></span> <h2>Vitalograph participates World COPD Day</h2> <p>To mark World COPD Day on 16 November 2005, the British Lung Foundation teamed up with Superdrug to offer a free spirometry test at selected stores across the UK. <a href="/resources/industry_news/news_world_copd_day.html">More ...</a></p> </div> <p class="back"><a href="javascript:history.go(-1)">< Back</a></p> </div> css: Code: .imgLeft img { clear: none; float: left; margin: 0px 20px 10px 0px; border: 1px solid #000099; } .imgRight img { clear: none; float: right; margin: 0px 10px 10px 20px; border: 1px solid #000099; } /*rows*/ .row { padding-top: 10px; margin-top: 10px; border-top: 1px solid #3399FF; } .rowLast { padding-top: 10px; padding-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; border-top: 1px solid #3399FF; border-bottom: 1px solid #3399FF; } .line { border-bottom: 1px solid #3399FF; padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; } .inline { display: inline; } #mainColumn { padding: 0px; margin-left: 175px; background-color: #FFFFFF; height: 100%; } /*industry news*/ #industry { padding-right: 20px; padding-left: 20px; } #industry h1 { margin-bottom: 20px; } #industry h2 { color: #000099; margin: 0px 0px 10px 0px; } #industry img { margin-bottom: 10px; } .copdDay img { clear: both; margin: 0px 40px 15px 55px; border: 1px solid #000099; } .artp { margin: 0px 40px 15px 40px; } .artp img { clear: both; margin: 0px 40px 15px 25px; border: 1px solid #000099; } Any suggestions on how to get this consistently since through css accounting for varying lengths of text?? I know I can adjust padding/margins for each section to make it work, but I want something that is more universal that I can always use to get the same appearance. Thanks! Similar TutorialsHi, Why there is such a big vertical space between table and element (div class="frm_container) in Internet Explorer 6. There is no space like that in Mozilla Firefox. What can I do about it? Thank you. Code: <head> <title>Title</title> <style type="text/css"> .frm_container { padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 1px solid #000; background-color: #fff; } </style> </head><body><div class="frm_container"> <form name="register" enctype="multipart/form-data" method="post" > <table><tr> <td align="right">Username:</td><td><input type="text" name="user" /></td> </tr></table> </form></div></body></html> Hey, all. Just wondering if anyone knows of a proper way to get rid of vertical space between text fields in a form. IE seems to like to have 2px in there, where other browsers will give me the desired 0px. For example:
Code: <input type='text' value='test' style='margin:0px; display:block;'> <input type='text' value='bottom' style='margin:0px; display:block;'> Gives me 2px of space between the 2 fields, but only in Internet Explorer.. Any thoughts? I am trying to style a form using CSS instead of tables but am getting unwanted space above form elements when i use float:right to position them to the right of the prompt text. I have spent some time reading about the problem which appears to be an error with IEs rendering of CSS. I have tried several solutions posted on the web with no success. Can anyone recommend a solution to my problem. Thanks. <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> <title>Untitled Document</title> <style type="text/css" media="screen"> .form { font-size:10px; text-align:left; } .form input { width: 100px; font-size: 9pt; border: 1px solid #891C46; margin-left: 12px; padding-top:0px; float:right; } .form select { width: 100px; float:right; font-size: 9pt; border: 1px solid #891C46; } .form textarea { width: 100px; float:right; font-size: 9pt; border: 1px solid #891C46; } .form li{ list-style-type: none; clear:both; } .form img{ padding-top:10px; float:right; } </style> </head> <body> <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="500"> <tr> <td width="50%" valign="top" class="form"> <ul> <li>Your name:<input name="textfield" type="text"></li> <li>Your email address:<input name="textfield" type="text"></li> <li>Your company:<input name="textfield" type="text"></li> <li>Your position:<input name="textfield" type="text"></li> <li>Subject:<select name="select"><option>Digital Advertising</option></select></li> <li>Query/comment:</li> <li><textarea name="textarea" cols="20" rows="8"></textarea></li> <li><img src="/carlton-newsite/img/contactus/send.gif" name="send" width="50" height="25" id="send"></li> </ul> </td> <td valign="top">sfasfasfasdfasdfasdfasdf</td> </tr> </table> </body> </html> Hi, I'm trying to redesign my website to be CSS and XHTML compliant. While I've managed it and everything is almost perfect, IE has one very minor glitch. The page is http://hiveworldterra.ibboard.co.uk/HWTv2.html My 3-col design is based on (and modified from) a 3 col layout I found on the net (there is a credit in the CSS of the page).IE displays everything perfectly and even resizes horizontally without a problem, but as soon as you try to resize vertically, the left column will often overlay the center column. Refreshing the page without resizing the window fixes it and resizing the page horizontally fixes it. As per usual, Firefox is perfectly fine, no matter how you resize the page (until you get down to rediculously small, at which point its to be expected!) It doesn't seem to be a width issue, as I've got a 1280x1024 monitor at work and at full width on one monitor or down at 500px wide there are only a handful of vertical sizes where the left column doesn't overlap, but every time it does overlap then if you resize horizontally by a single pixel then it fixes itself. Anyone have any ideas or IE only hacks (preferably neat ones!) to stop this minorly annoying behaviour? From problems I had while modifying the original layout, it almost seems as if IE is losing the float on the left column. Thanks I've just started to learn CSS, and I've picked it up without much trouble so far, but I'm stuck with a small formatting problem I'm having. Using Firefox, the spacing for the menus on the right and left side are basically where I want them to be. Link Horizontal Line Link HR and so on... The page is at http://www.mcconaha.com/csscenter.php and the CSS is at http://www.mcconaha.com/csscenter.css So I have two questions... 1) What formatting trick am I missing when it comes to the padding under text like that? I've used the padding attribute in the CSS, but it doesn't seem to do anything. The only solution I've found is to set the margins to -Xpx and use that, but then it overlaps in FF. This has to be simple and stupid, I just haven't figured it out. 2) This isn't as vital, but would be nice if I could figure out. The nav boxes are stacked down each side. If I add an item to the top box, I have to readjust the top attribute in the CSS for all boxes by whatever the increase in size of the first box was. Is there a way to align the top box, then make all the others conform down when you add something above? Thanks in advance. I'm sure I'll be posting more questions as I have them. Hi, I'm developing the following site and am having some issues with spacing and heights. The first and major problem is in Firefox. As you will see at the bottom, my content "grows" out of it's wrapper div for some reason. It works great in IE, where the height of the content will determine how high both the side and main columns are. The second problem is in IE. There is too much space between the menu and the image above it. I want it to be flush to the image, as it is in Firefox. How can I go about solving these two issues? Hi, It seems I just can't get away from the height: 100% problems. I tryed making my body 100% and my container min-heaight 100% but that didn't work. I'll post the index and css below. I also want there to be a 15px space between each box 'lightbox, lightbox2, topbox, bottombox.. Actually urls in pictures are removed as well so no pics. Website is theinterviewkit dot com What I want done is some simple spacing: The add to cart button doesn't line up I the store page, it is ok when I check the website on safari and Firefox, but on my iPad the add to cart button is beside the quantity box. I'd like it under Have images I marked up but The forum doesn't allow urls in posts of new users!!!!!! check store page When you click on the product and go to the product page, the add to cart is slightly to the left of the name and price. I would like it Lined up where the red line is. On safari and my iPad, it is as you see in the screen shot. On Firefox though, the add to cart button is under the picture. Unfortunately when I tried editing, any change I did moved the add to cart button on each page that had it (store page and every product page). I'm guessing because I'm editing that element instead of the spacing of the page. Had Image here but no urls allowed. Check product page Again, I don't know anything about CSS, only very very basic HTML. If anybody could figure it out that would be awesome. Hi everybody. I'm attempting to format video thumbnails horizontally across a page, and I'm experiencing some very weird behaviors. A bit of basic background on the site - this is a Drupal 5 site sporting a customized version of the "Lite Jazz" theme. XHTML & CSS are both valid. Basically, I just want to have the thumbnails scroll horizontally from left to right, then break and continue directly underneath. However, I am getting this odd "stair" effect in Firefox (for lack of a better way to put it). The alignment looks fine in IE, however in IE the thumbnail furthest to the right is squashed up against the side of the border. I have attached two screenshots to give you an idea. Below is a sample of the video thumbnail HTML that is output by Drupal and all (what I think is) all of the pertinent CSS styling. Additionally, I am aware that I can combine several of these CSS classes, so there is no literal need for multiple div tags, but these divs are generated by a short series of tpl files, and I don't think they are hurting anything. I could of course be wrong, but it would be hard to really consolidate them they way that the template is structures. Here's the HTML involved: Code: <div class="node"> <div class="content"><div class="video"> <a href="http://kathleenmackie.com/node/48"><img src="http://kathleenmackie.com/files/48_AtlantaFinal.jpg" alt="Watch this video!" /></a><br /> vid: 48<br /> type: video<br /> status: 1<br /> created: 1207090735<br /> </div></div> </div> <div class="node"> <div class="content"><div class="video"> <a href="http://kathleenmackie.com/node/47"><img src="http://kathleenmackie.com/files/47_FirefoxScreenSnapz003.jpg" alt="Watch this video!" /></a><br /> vid: 47<br /> type: video<br /> status: 1<br /> created: 1206652960<br /> </div></div> </div> <div class="node"> <div class="content"><div class="video"> <a href="http://kathleenmackie.com/node/45"><img src="/sites/all/modules/flashvideo/thumbnail_MIA.png" alt="thumbnail unavailable" /></a><br /> vid: 45<br /> type: video<br /> status: 1<br /> created: 1204256880<br /> </div></div> </div> And the CSS as well.... Code: .node { display: inline; padding: 5px 10px 10px; } .node .content, .comment .content { margin: 0; } .node .taxonomy { font-size: 0.8em; padding-left: 1.5em; } .node .picture { border: 1px solid #ddd; float: right; } .video { border: 1px solid #1e6730; background-color: #beff93; padding: 5px 10px 10px; clear: right; float: left; display: inline; margin: 15px; } #header, #content { width: 100%; } .node .content, .comment .content { margin: 0; I would include a bbcode link to the site, but apparently new users cannot do that (I suppose that makes sense from a spamming standpoint). Site is located at kathleenmackie.com. I also have screenshots from IE and Firefox detailing the problems, but again I apparently can't attach files or images (??). Thanks folks... hoping somebody has an idea or two. Again, I do have screenshots as well..... Here's the link of the messy page: http://205.205.200.231/~h806209/indexmess.php I need someone to tell me why the float left/right isn't aligning properly. I posted the link above. Here's an example that works: http://205.205.200.231/~h806209/positioning.php and http://205.205.200.231/~h806209/positioning1.php One's in a style tags the other's inline. But when I insert my codes it shows things messed up. Hello everyone!! Great community you have going here! I am working on a personal project, and try to do all the work myself (hired a designer at one point but the best he could do is a table based layout ) The site is based on the drupal CMS and the zen theme. And currently the them has problems when rendered in IE7 everything is getting jammed in the top left corner in IE7 and IE8 compat mode: drupal.org/files/issues/IE8_compat.GIF some people tried to combat this issue by adding this to the IE specific stylesheet: CSS Code: Original - CSS Code #header, #main {overflow: hidden;} #header, but it does not solve the problem 100% drupal.org/files/issues/IE7vsIE8_overflow_hidden.GIF I've been searching for a fix for some time but with no luck, so if you people have any suggestions I would be super appreciative! The live site could be viewed he techbine.nfshost.com P.S. to see the images copy/paste the links to the address bar (I have a low post count so can't link directly ) Hey. On my page I've got smaller "post" div's I put my content in, and those are inside a "mainContent" div again. They have fixed width and I can get two of them beside each other, which works fine with float:left - but if I have two posts with variable height, then the next post on the page will be below the highest one. I uploaded an example at http://www.zaklaberg.tk. I was wondering how I can make it so my post elements stack properly on top of each other? My css-rule for the post div tags looks like this: Code: .post { padding: 5px; height: auto; width: 330px; margin-bottom: 50px; margin-left: 30px; background-color: #CCE3C1; float: left; } The rest of my css is at http://home.online.no/~ste-labe/_css/main.css. Thanks in advance for any help! Hey everyone, Just released v2 of my design site - but there's a problem with the floated sidebar in IE6. http://www.quiviramedia.com/ is the site. http://www.quiviramedia.com/style.css is the CSS URL. What is the problem? Does anybody know? Thank you! Hi all, and thanks for reading. I'm doing my first big DIV-based design, and have got it working pretty well, except that I'm getting a fairly large top and slightly large bottom margin on one of the nested DIVs. This has a border running around it, so I really don't want it there. Here's the stylesheet: Code: <style type="text/css"> BODY {margin:0; font-family:Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size:16px; background-color:#F1F1F1; text-align:center; background-image:url(images/background.gif);} DIV {background-color:#FFFFFF;} #container {width:800px; text-align:left; margin:0 auto; border-left:solid 6px #007EC3; border-right:solid 6px #007EC3; border-bottom:solid 6px #007EC3;} #header {border-bottom:solid 6px #F1F1F1;} #bodycontainer {border-bottom:solid 6px #F1F1F1; margin:0;} #menucontainer {width:192px; float:left; clear:left; margin:0;} #menucontainer DIV {border-top:solid 2px #CCCCCC;} #contentcontainer {margin-left:192px; border-right:solid 6px #F1F1F1; border-left:solid 2px #007EC3;} #contentcontainer P {margin-left:20px; margin-right:20px;} #footer {text-align:center; font-size:12px; font-weight:bold; border-top:solid 2px #007EC3;} #footer P {margin-top:5px; margin-bottom:5px;} #footer A {color:#007EC3; text-decoration:underline;} #footer A:hover {color:#007EC3; text-decoration:none;} </style> Here's the processed HTML: Code: <div id="container"> <div id="header"><img src="images/header.jpg" alt="The International Wildlife Museum" width="800" height="110"></div> <div id="bodycontainer"> <div id="menucontainer"> <div style="border-top:0;"><a href="info/" onmouseover="changeImage('info',true);" onmouseout="changeImage('info',false);"><img src="images/menu/4/info.gif" name="info" alt="General Info" border="0"></a></div> <div><a href="about/" onmouseover="changeImage('about',true);" onmouseout="changeImage('about',false);"><img src="images/menu/4/about.gif" name="about" alt="About Us" border="0"></a></div> <div><a href="exhibits/" onmouseover="changeImage('exhibits',true);" onmouseout="changeImage('exhibits',false);"><img src="images/menu/4/exhibits.gif" name="exhibits" alt="Exhibits" border="0"></a></div> <div><a href="tour/" onmouseover="changeImage('tour',true);" onmouseout="changeImage('tour',false);"><img src="images/menu/4/tour.gif" name="tour" alt="Tour Info" border="0"></a></div> <div><a href="education/" onmouseover="changeImage('education',true);" onmouseout="changeImage('education',false);"><img src="images/menu/4/education.gif" name="education" alt="Educational Programs" border="0"></a></div> <div><a href="events/" onmouseover="changeImage('events',true);" onmouseout="changeImage('events',false);"><img src="images/menu/4/events.gif" name="events" alt="Special Events" border="0"></a></div> <div><a href="membership/" onmouseover="changeImage('membership',true);" onmouseout="changeImage('membership',false);"><img src="images/menu/4/membership.gif" name="membership" alt="Membership" border="0"></a></div> <div><a href="theater/" onmouseover="changeImage('theater',true);" onmouseout="changeImage('theater',false);"><img src="images/menu/4/theater.gif" name="theater" alt="Wildlife Theater" border="0"></a></div> <div><a href="facility/" onmouseover="changeImage('facility',true);" onmouseout="changeImage('facility',false);"><img src="images/menu/4/facility.gif" name="facility" alt="Facilities/Rental" border="0"></a></div> <div><a href="contacts/" onmouseover="changeImage('contacts',true);" onmouseout="changeImage('contacts',false);"><img src="images/menu/4/contacts.gif" name="contacts" alt="Contacts" border="0"></a></div> </div> <div id="contentcontainer"> <p>The International Wildlife Museum is a non-profit educational program of Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF). I am trying to solve a float problem. The crux: One wrapper div around a left (floated) column and right column. Content in the left is fine: In the right column I need the image (#logo) to be on the left of a h2 (#name). The #logo is taller than #name. Under both of those I need a ul (#basic_list) to essentially clear both #logo and #name. Please look at my code and diagram of how it should look in my attachment. Thanks Hey guys, I started working on my website again and found a great CSS dropdown menu online that is free to use with a GPL license. I adjusted it without a problem (always could read and adjust code but aren't great when it comes to writing it). Now that I embedded it in my website there is a slight trouble I am running into. I can't seem to center it no matter what I try. I read these floats are tricky to center at times which is why I wanted to share my code with you and see if you might be able to fix it for me. If anyone of you can help me out it would be much appreciated!!! Thanks, alex Here is the site with the code.
