CSS - Failing Badly With Alignment! :( Inline Divs
Hi everyone,
I am bad at this bit and i don't really know why. I have a div and a floated UL. I want the div to sit next to the UL, however, it sits above it and I cannot get them to sit together. Could someone please just post a brief method of getting them to sit side by side and I will try and work it for myself. Thanks. Page is http://www.wellandpower.net Similar Tutorialscan anyone tell me why the control div with the links and the div to contain the images for my photo album do not look properly aligned? link to photo Album can be found here but please note this is a dynamically set IP so is likely to change: http://85.210.107.231/PA.html I usually lurk in the Javascript forum, but a frustrating CSS issue has presented itself. I've googled this extensively and haven't found any working solutions. I'll write in pseudo-code what I want to happen, and hopefully someone can fill in the blanks... here goes: Code: <style type="text/css"> .container { display: inline-block; } .title { align: left; } .subtext { align: right; } </style> <div class="container"> <div class="header"> <div class="title">Title Goes Here</div> <div class="subtext">Align Me Right</div> </div> <div class="content"> Variable content which container needs to size dynamically to fit. Could be 300px wide, could be 500px wide... </div> </div> What I've tried so far: Tried setting the container width to 1% so IE would autosize to content (while setting white-space: nowrap for the title/subtext), but IE wrapped between the title and subtext elements) Played around with setting absolute widths for the container, but I would really prefer being able to have variably sized content And unfortunately (in many ways) it only has to work in IE. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Hello, I'm trying to make a neat CSS version of the tabled "itembox" in the attached image. I've got this far: http://offhourscomputing.com/ibdev.php The CSS for that page is: Code: /*Item Box*/ #ib{ margin:10px; width:38%; overflow:hidden; padding:3px; border-top:2px solid #eaeaea; border-right:2px solid #eaeaea; border-bottom:1px solid #eaeaea; border-left:1px solid #eaeaea; } #ib #l{ width:25%; border-right:#eaeaea 1px dashed; } #ib #r{ width:75%; display:inline; } #ib #r #n{ font-size: 12px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-decoration: none; color:#000000 } #ib #r #n,#m{ display:block; } /*Item Box*/ How can i have: "SAMSUNG 40GB 7200RPM Light and Slim IDE Hard Drive, Model SP0411N, OEM Drive only ...More Testing" inline with the image? (looking similar to the attached screenshot of the item boxes) Thanks. Hello, I am trying to display a three column menu (each column is a list). I created a single container. Within that I created three more containers(each about 33% width). Each internal <div> for the separate columns are set to inline. When I put text in each of the 4 pairs of <divs> they display side by side. Just fine. But If the DIV contains a list, despite the fact that the DIVs defined as inline, it still drops to the next line and things like the background color don't even render. All of the box styles are identical except for the background color. Shouldn't the <DIV> (defined with the display:inline) let me place whatever I want inside it? Just out of curiosity, I changed the first column into a 1 item list and it sifted to the right,.I don't know what that was based on. It also seemed to act like a block display, everytning went to the next line, and the background color was ignored. But the color attribute did render. ????? I haven't seen anything discussing the issues with defining lists inside of inline DIVs. I'm working with Firefox because that follows the standards better than IE although I have to make it work w/ IE too. What did has me pounding my head is how a UL tag seems to wipe out most (but not all) of the settings for the DIV containing it. I am thinking of making the columns each list items as a work around but I don't know why what I tried doesn't work. Thanks! Randy This is an simple example: Code: <html> <head> <title>Untitled Document</title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> <style> #box1 { width:100px; height:100px; background-color:#FFFF33; display:inline; } #box2 { width: 100px; height: 100px; background-color:#FF8833; display:inline; } #box3 { width: 100px; height: 100px; background-color:#88FF33; display:inline; } #box4 { width: 100px; height: 100px; background-color:#CCCCCC; display:inline; } #container { width: 550px; height 150px; background-color:#CC66FF; } li { list-style:none; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="container"> <div id="box1">Column 1</div> <div id="box2">Column 2</div> <div id="box3">Column 3</div> <div id="box4"> <ul> <li>Column 4</li> </ul> </div> </body> </html> Since this is my first post here, Hello, everyone! I can't find the answer to this simple question anywhere else, so I hope you can help. When a block-level (by default) element is set to "display: inline", can it still contain other block-level elements? BTW I want to avoid using "display: inline-block" since it is not as well-supported. Thanks a bunch, Rachel I have been trying in vain to get div elements on a page to behave how i want them to. I have a list of items, in the middle of which i need to display some tablular information witha picture along side it. This i have managed to acieve fine, but i can't get the next <li> to start below these 2, it starts alongside and the wraps underneath. I have tried everything. Can someone please compare at my code in ff3 and IE and tell me what I'm doing wrong.

I have two fixed height divs which I want to appear on the same line (inline). However to maintain the fixed height they cannot be set as display: inline; (Well that works in IE but not in Firefox). Anyway I find out that setting one div to float left and the other to float right with another div with clear:both works fine. However when it comes to setting the position of the flash elements I want in each div element it works now in Firefox but not in IE. I currently have: <div id="diva"> <object id="face1" width="320" height="110"> <param name="face1" value="face1.swf"> <embed src="face1.swf" width="320" height="110"> </embed> </object> </div> <div id="divb"> <object id="face2" width="320" height="110"> <param name="face2" value="face2.swf"> <embed src="face2.swf" width="320" height="110"> </embed> </object> </div> <div id="clear"></div> With the relavent css: #div1 { background-image : url(images/bg1.gif); width: 381px; height: 346px; float: left; text-align : center; vertical-align : bottom; } #div2 { background-image : url(images/bg2.gif); width: 381px; height: 346px; float: right; text-align: center; vertical-align : bottom; } #clear { clear: both; } img { border: 0px; } #face1{ padding-top: 220px; left: 30px; } #face2{ position: relative; top: 220px; left: 10px; } Effectively what I want is: Where the divs are on the same line and are fixed height (as they have a background) and then each swf element releatively positioned inside the div...which will work in Firefox and IE! Thank you for your time. OK, I've got this page currently: http://www.brianellisrules.com/stickers/pics/ (click on a state) I'm trying to add a caption to each thumbnail showing the date: http://www.brianellisrules.com/stic...s/testindex.php (click on a state, preferably NY or NJ since they have a lot of pics) In the first version, I have all the pictures centered and they're all vertically aligned to the middle (of the row). In the second version, I switched over to floating div's so I could center each date below each thumbnail. That works great, however, all the thumbnails are left aligned. I tried adding a div around the thumbnails with everything centered, but no dice. How do I center the row of thumbnails? Also, how do I align the thumbnails to the center of the row (or at least the prev/next arrows)? Thanks! oh yeah, here's the CSS: div.thumbrow { clear: both; padding-top: 10px; margin-left: 20%; margin-right: auto;} /*THE MARGIN IS JUST A TEMP FIX, BUT NOT WHAT I WANT. I'D LIKE FOR IT TO BE CENTERED*/ div.float { float: left; text-align: center; } div.float p { text-align: center; margin: 0; font-size: 0.8em; } Hi, I've decided to take the plunge and try using CSS to replicate a table layout. I've appended my code below. My issue is that I cannot get the menu and content <DIV> to align next to each other. Any tips gratefully received. But if I use relative positioning and don't use the floats, I can't put the two top divs next to each other. The other option is to use absolute positioning, but again content below doesn't get pushed down correctly. It seems that using "clear:both" works, but it seems weird that this has to be done. For example if I have floating divs in a container, I can get them to stretch out the container like so: Code: <html> <body> <div style="border: 1px solid #000; "> <div style="float:right"> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> </div> <div style="clear: both"></div> </div> <hr> </body> </html> Am I missing something fundamental here? Is there a better solution? Thanks in advance. I posted this by accident in the html forum , so im asking he I have this in my CSS page: Code: a.mainlevell:link, a.mainlevel:visited { display: block; color: #FFFFFF; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 1px; font-size: 12px; } a.mainlevell:hover { color: #FFFF00; font-size: 12px; } And I use this style for four links: Code: <a href="mobile.html" class="mainlevell">Home</a> <a href="m_about.html" class="mainlevell">About Us</a> <a href="m_games.html" class="mainlevell">Games</a> <a href="m_links.html" class="mainlevell">Links</a> When viewing in IE, all the URL's using m_* in the file name works with the CSS; the one referencing mobile.html doesn't. However, putting an m_ in front of the mobile.html makes the link work. Why? This happens only in IE. firefox/opera/netscape/etc ; the links all show up fine and work as supposed to. However, I have a similar set up for another menu that does almost the same CSS as the above: Code: <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="2" cellpadding="3"> <tr> <td align="center" bgcolor="#990000"><img src="images/dmp_off.gif" name="home" width="14" height="14" id="home"></td> <td bgcolor="#990000"><a href="mobile.html" class="menulevel" onMouseOver="MM_swapImage('home','','images/dmp_on.gif',1)" onMouseOut="MM_swapImgRestore()">Home</a></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="18" align="center" bgcolor="#990000"><img src="images/dmp_off.gif" name="one" width="14" height="14" id="one"></td> <td bgcolor="#990000"><a href="m_blah.html" class="menulevel" onMouseOver="MM_swapImage('one','','images/dmp_on.gif',1)" onMouseOut="MM_swapImgRestore()">Blah</a></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="18" align="center" bgcolor="#990000"><img src="images/dmp_off.gif" name="two" width="14" height="14" id="two"></td> <td bgcolor="#990000"><a href="m_blah.html" class="menulevel" onMouseOver="MM_swapImage('two','','images/dmp_on.gif',1)" onMouseOut="MM_swapImgRestore()">Blah</a></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="18" align="center" bgcolor="#990000"><img src="images/dmp_off.gif" name="three" width="14" height="14" id="three"></td> <td bgcolor="#990000"><a href="m_blah.html" class="menulevel" onMouseOver="MM_swapImage('three','','images/dmp_on.gif',1)" onMouseOut="MM_swapImgRestore()">Blah</a></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="18" align="center" bgcolor="#990000"><img src="images/dmp_off.gif" name="four" width="14" height="14" id="four"></td> <td bgcolor="#990000"><a href="m_blah.html" class="menulevel" onMouseOver="MM_swapImage('four','','images/dmp_on.gif',1)" onMouseOut="MM_swapImgRestore()">Blah</a></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="18" align="center" bgcolor="#990000"><img src="images/dmp_off.gif" name="five" width="14" height="14" id="five"></td> <td bgcolor="#990000"><a href="m_blah.html" class="menulevel" onMouseOver="MM_swapImage('five','','images/dmp_on.gif',1)" onMouseOut="MM_swapImgRestore()">Blah</a></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="18" align="center" bgcolor="#990000"><img src="images/dmp_off.gif" name="six" width="14" height="14" id="six"></td> <td bgcolor="#990000"><a href="m_blah.html" class="menulevel" onMouseOver="MM_swapImage('six','','images/dmp_on.gif',1)" onMouseOut="MM_swapImgRestore()">Blah</a></td> </tr> </table> and this one works fine ( even with the mobile.html) Here's the site in Question: http://www.winchps.vic.edu.au It's a standard fixed width floated DIV columns with a wrapper. One thing it does have is a second DIV inside both columns to display the Gradient background over the top of the repeated background. It works perfect in Firefox & IE7 (with a tweak) but IE6 mkes the sidebar nested div drop below the original sidebar DIV click here for a screenshot for those lucky enough not to have IE6. Here's the CSS code for the basic layout: Code: body { font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Sans-Serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: center; margin: 0px 0px 60px 0px; padding:0px; border: 0; line-height: 2; } #header { width: 802px; } #wrapper { width: 802px; margin:0px; padding: 0px; text-align: left; margin: 0 auto; background: url(images/bodybg.jpg) center repeat-y; } #content { padding: 0px; margin: 0px; } #maingrad { background: url(images/winchcontentgrad.jpg) top left repeat-x; padding: 10px; } #main { width: 589px; float: right; background: url(images/winchcontentbg.jpg) repeat; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; } #mainstop { width: 589px; float: right; background: url(images/winchcontentbg.jpg) repeat; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; border-bottom: solid 1px #000; font-size: 10px; } #sidebargrad { background: url(images/winchsidebargrad.jpg) top left repeat-x; padding: 10px 5px 0px 10px; } #sidebar { width: 200px; float: left; background: url(images/winchsidebg.jpg) repeat; line-height: 2; font-size: 14px; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; } I obviously need to put a conditional comment in there, same for what I did for the minor IE7 tweak, but I'm struggling to suss out what's causing it, I haven't found the specific issue on any of the regular sites (PIE etc). Anyone got any ideas? Centering DIVs inside other DIVs in Firefox? Can it be done in a straight forward way? Setting the inner DIVs float to none seemed to work for IE but not FF. Alrighty, I'm trying to produce a layout similar to that of what is shown in the attached image. Please ignore the image being the rainbox colors, but I had to differentiate sections. I can get the banner/search line to appear properly, but the rest will not. Left menu gets positioned fine, the content does as well (more or less), but the right column is displaced, and shifted down to the very bottom of the window -- far right, though. I can't explain much better than that, so without further ado: CSS: Code: .columns-float{ float : left; width : 80%; } .column-one { width : 75%; /* NOTE: This needs to be dynamic! THIS is what I'm inquiring about. The above problem assumes this attribute is set to "auto". */ float : right; } .column-two { width : 25%; float : left; } .column-three{ width : 20%; float : right; } .box-footer{ clear : both; } .column-one-content{ margin-left: 1px; margin-right: 1px; } /*Hack below:*/ .box-wrap, .columns-float, .column-one, .column-two, .column-three, h2{ p\osition: relative; } (Above was borrowed from here, albeit with modifications.) HTML: Code: ... <div class="columns-float"> <div class="column-one"> <div class="column-one-content"> <h2>column 1</h2> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p><a href="#" title="fake link for testing">test link</a></p> </div> </div> <div class="column-two"> <div class="column-two-content"> <h2>column 2</h2> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p><a href="#" title="fake link for testing">test link</a></p> </div> </div> <div class="box-clear"> </div><!-- # needed to make sure column 3 is cleared || but IE5(PC) and OmniWeb don't like it --> </div><!-- close boxbody --> <div class="column-three"> <div class="column-three-content"> <h2>column 3</h2> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p>column filler</p> <p><a href="#" title="fake link for testing">test link</a></p> </div> </div> <div class="box-clear"> </div><!-- # needed to make sure column 3 is cleared || but IE5(PC) and OmniWeb don't like it --> <div class="box-footer">Footer </div> Do not link me to Position Is Everything. Been there already, and it wasn't helpful; the used terminology was too abstruse for me. Any help would be appreciated, and I thank you very much for your time. This is driving me batty. |
