CSS - Ie And Firefox Positioning Things Differently
Well I'm pretty uneducated in CSS, I have just played around with it hours and hours and always figured out what I was trying to do. But right now I am stumped. Please view the following page in FireFox if you have it:
http://www.iqdrop.com/newiq/index.php Then in IE You see the Google ad is dropped way down in IE for some reason and overlaps my menu, and the <DIV> containing the word "index.php" is also taller in IE. I'm not sure what is wrong and I've been trying all sorts of things with no luck. Thanks for any help. Similar TutorialsI am honestly trying to do this thing with CSS but CSS does not seem rational. I had some nested div elements now I thought that position relative was with respect to the parent. So if I put position: relative; left:100px; top: 8px on the red one it will be close to the top of the parent (the blue one) and 100 px over from the left. Then if I do the green div the same except top: 22px it will be right below the red one. I know divs make a new line but they were skipping a line. So I turned them into spans. now it starts the second one at the right place top to bottom, but left to right it starts where the last one left off. And now here's an even harder question, I guess without using zindex they won't overlay, right? and centering is just out of the question... Code: <div> <div> </div> <div> </div> </div> Here is some sample actual code: http://www.colleenweb.com/onetix.html It doesnt have all the normal styles but it shows the problem very clearly. If you look at the code it should be pretty clear what I intended. Please tell me why the position specifications are being ignored. And problems are compounded when you try to print it, it makes the graphic background bigger and cuts it off. If you just print the graphic it is fine. I gave up with the transparent for now because this has to work tomorrow, and just made a hard coded blue one but eventually I'd like to address that too. I need to be able to make these look acceptable both for screen and print. I never had these problems when I did everything with tables. This is why people don't learn CSS. I just spent an hour putting this together and previewing it in IE... then when i go over to my mac and preview in safari.. UGH!!! UGLY!... Then in firefox.. UGLY!.. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for helping! site link: http://www.nyitforums.com/ Hi, I'm having an interesting problem. I have a left floated containing div and then a right floated containing div to split multiple contents between the left and right side of a popup window. It works great in IE 7, Chrome, FF3, but for some reason not in FF2. In FF2, it forces the contents of the right floated containing div below the left floated div (instead of beside it) and makes it's width the entire width of the popup. Any idea why? (there is a reason I had to put all the css directly in the code - normally it's separated) Here's the code: Code: <div style='padding: 15px; text-align: left;'> <div style='float: left;'> <table style='margin-top:16px; font-size: 12px; font-family: Verdana,Arial,sans-serif;'> <tr> <td>Name:</td><td colspan='2'><input id='popupName' name='popupName' style='float:left' type='text'></td> </tr> <tr> <td style='padding:5px 0 17px 0;'>Type:</td><td style='padding:5px 0 17px 0;' colspan='2'><select id='popupType' name='popupType' style='float:left; width: 148px; height: 21px' ></select></td> </tr> <tr> <td style='padding-bottom: 14px;' colspan='3'><div style='width: 280px'>This is some text.</div></td> </tr> <tr> <td style='padding-bottom: 5px;'>Group Title:</td><td style='padding-bottom: 5px;'><input id='popupGroupTitle' name='popupGroupTitle' style='float:left' type='text'></td><td></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Titles:</td><td><input id='popupTitles' name='popupTitles' style='float:left' type='text'></td><td><input style='float:left; padding: 0;' type='button' value='Add >>' onclick=\"addToList()\"></td> </tr> </table> </div> <div style='float: right;'> <div style='margin-bottom:5px;'>Element Titles:</div> <select id='newOptionSelect' style='float:right; width: 247px;' size='12'></select> <input id='popupDeleteBtn' style=\"clear: right; background: rgb(190,190,190) url('/url') no-repeat center center; float:right; margin: 5px 2px;\" type='button' onclick='removeFromList(\"newOptionSelect\", newOptionArray)'/> <input id='popupMoveDownBtn' style=\"float:right; background: rgb(190,190,190) url('/url') no-repeat center center; margin: 5px 2px;\" type='button' onclick='moveDown(\"newOptionSelect\", newOptionArray)'/> <input id='popupMoveUpBtn' style=\"background: rgb(190,190,190) url('/url') no-repeat center center; float:right; margin: 5px 2px;\" type='button' onclick='moveUp(\"newOptionSelect\", newOptionArray)'/> </div> </div> </div> Code: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>Tableless structure</title> <style type="text/css"> <!-- * { font: 12px Verdana, Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; width: 800px; height: 500px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; } body { margin: 0px; padding: 0px; margin-top: 40px; } #head { background: LightGreen; width: 100%; height: 15%; } #menu { background: Pink; float: left; width: 20%; height: 80%; } #body { background: LightBlue; float: right; width: 80%; height: 80%; } #foot { background: Silver; clear: both; width: 100%; height: 5%; } --> </style> </head> <body> <div id="head">Header</div> <div id="menu">Menu</div> <div id="body">Body</div> <div id="foot">Footer</div> </body> </html> This code works fine on Firefox by centering horitzontally the page but in IE7 stays left aligned. Can you help? Thank you! Running here I've been working some more on a new layout for one of my websites this weekend. However, I'm having trouble getting the layout to display the same in all browsers. Everything is looking exactly how I hoped in Firefox, but when the same page is viewed in Internet Explorer, some things appear rather differently. Sample Page: http://www.mybb-emods.com/new/index.htm CSS File: http://www.mybb-emods.com/new/stylesheet.css Firstly, the background of the navigation bar at the top of the page should remain grey at all times apart from when a link is hovered, in which case it changes to blue. This is happening in both browsers, but in Internet explorer, only part of the background is changing as opposed to all of it. It's easier to show this than to explain, so I've posted two screenshots below to demonstrate. The first screenshot shows the navigation bar in Firefox, the second shows the same bar in Internet Explorer. I'm assuming this is probably something to do with the padding values I have assigned, but I have been unable to find a working solution for all browsers. Also, I'm having a problem with the left margin of my main page content. The margins down the left side of the main page should all be 20px from the left hand border, and this shows correctly again in Firefox. However, in Internet Explorer, the left margin of the navigation bar appears correctly, but the content beneath it appears to have a much larger margin and as such the layout appears incorrectly. If anyone has any idea how to fix these problems then I would very much appreciate the advice. Thanks. Hi, I have an issue with Vertical menu contained in Re-sizable DIV. I couldn't get it to do what I want, so I had to copy the file from someplace else, so there's alot of code commented out. The HTML is much cleaner though! The issue is in the image above is that the 'Contact' and 'Back to Projects' images are too high in Safari. In IE and Firefox they're placed correctly. All the other images on the rest of the site line up fine, as you can see with the JW logo, Resume link, and even the bar across the screen All the images are in their own < li > (I think it's weird myself, but it works). And the placement is done in the CSS. Code: <li id="ResumeHigh"><a href="resume.asp" onmouseout="MM_swapImgRestore()" onmouseover="MM_swapImage('resume','','images/resume_rollover.gif',1)"><img src="images/resume.gif" name="resume" border="0" id="about" /></a></li> <li id="ContactHigh"><a href="contact.asp" onmouseout="MM_swapImgRestore()" onmouseover="MM_swapImage('contact','','images/contact_rollover.gif',1)"><img src="images/contact.gif" name="contact2" border="0" id="contact2" /></a></li> <li id="BackHigh"><a href="index.asp" onmouseout="MM_swapImgRestore()" onmouseover="MM_swapImage('Back','','images/back_to_proj_rollover.gif',1)"><img src="images/back_to_proj.gif" name="Back" width="141" height="9" border="0" id="Back" /></a></li> And the CSS Alignment: Code: #ResumeHigh {left:550px; top: 62px; width: 141px; height: 11px;} #ContactHigh {left:550px; top: 78px; width: 141px; height: 11px;} #BackHigh {left: 550px; top: 101px; width:141px; height:9px;} Full Pages: http://www.jerrywatersarchitect.com/sample/contact.asp http://www.jerrywatersarchitect.com/sample/jw2.css Any ideas whats causing the 'Contact' and 'Back to Projects' to be a few pixels too high? I appreciate any help you can provide. Hi everyone A bit of a call for help with some niggly issues - all found on the following page and css: http://www.crashingbydesign.com.au/rsaa/index.html http://www.crashingbydesign.com.au/rsaa/home.css 1. Two of the absolutely positioned divs don't show up at all in IE6, but they're fine in Opera 7.5 and Firefox 1.0PR. The ones with id's "title" and "utility" are the problem ones and I can't see what the problem is with IE. In addition to this, this div shows up in a different position in both Opera and Firefox (10 pixels higher in Opera). Please help!! 2. The links in the "mainnav" div are only clickable either at the very top of the <a> element (Firefox) or the very bottom of the <a> element (Opera), however in IE the whole <a> element is completely clickable. I can't see any element that is overlapping. What is going on?? All help appreciated. Cheers Bevester The link to my page is: crowncontainer.com/dev/activity_test.php you'll have to post the www. in front, i'm a new user and can't post URL???? I have validated both the CSS and the XHTML. If you open in IE, the width starts out at 200px, which is what I've defined in CSS. If you open it in Firefox, it is wider and I don't know why? Also - when you click on the submit button, the program will return data in an AJAX call and the data will load in a div directly underneath the form. When the data is returned in IE, the width of the left nav will increase to the same width that displays in Firefox. Because of this, I have to believe that there is some buggy code that causes it to 'sort of' work in IE but not in Firefox? Can someone take a stab at this and help me? I want to keep my left nav width to 200px; I am currently having to deal with a mystery padding at the bottom of each of my im_container tags... everything is set to 0px, and oddly enough... it looks GREAT in IE (ugghh... i can't believe i just said that)... it doesnt however look good in firefox... whats up... here is the XHTML followed by the CSS.. Code: <div class="im_left"> <div class="im_container"> <div class="im_logo"><img src="/images/im_icq.gif" alt="Contact Via ICQ" /></div> <div class="im_info"> 164149536 </div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <div class="im_container"> <div class="im_logo"><img src="/images/im_aim.gif" alt="Contact Via AIM" /></div> <div class="im_info"> Incomplete Gamer </div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> </div> Code: .im_left {float:left; width:270px;} .im_container { margin:0 0 0 30px !important; border:1px solid #900; } .im_container a:link, .im_container a:visited, .im_container a:active, .im_container a:hover {color:#FFF;} .im_logo { margin:0px 0 0 0; float:left; width:30px; margin:0px; padding:0px; } .im_logo img {border:0px; margin:0px; padding:0px;} .im_info { font-size:12px; font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; margin:0 0 0 5px; text-align:justify; width:200px; float:left; } .im_title { text-align:center; font-weight:bold; } I'm pretty new to CSS (only just begun). I've been teaching myself using a number of resources, but I realise the best way to learn is to practice. I just don't think I'm doing it right. I want to have the main content of the page floating in the centre of the window, which works in IE but not firefox or opera. I also want san serif fonts, but these also aren't being displayed in Opera or Firefox. Any ideas? Here's the code: Code: /*** TEXT AND TAG STYLES ***/ body { font:Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, san-serif; color:#000000; text-align:center; background-color:#003366;} h1 { font:Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, san-serif; color:#336699; text-decoration:underline;} h2 { font:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color:#336699; text-decoration:none;} h3 { font:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-decoration:none;} a { color:#3366CC; text-decoration:none;} a:link { color:#3366CC; text-decoration:none;} a:hover { color:#336699; text-decoration:underline;} ul { list-style-image:url(../images/bullets/bullet1.gif);} ul ul { list-style-image:url(../images/bullets/bullet2.gif);} em { color:#336699; text-decoration:none; } /*** PAGE DIVISIONS ***/ #container { width:772px; height:600px; top:7px; text-align:left; font:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size:10px; background-color:#FFFFFF; padding: 10px 10px 10px 10px;} #masthead { height:100px; width: auto;} #navbar { position:relative; top:2px; width:auto; height:15px; padding: 3px 6px 3px 6px; border-top: 2px solid #000033; border-bottom: 2px solid #000033; background-color:#336699; color: #FFFFFF;} #content { position: relative; top: 2px; border-color:#336699; border-style:groove; border-width:1px; width: auto; height: 438px; padding: 10px 7px 10px 12px;} .piece { position:relative; float:left; width: 522px; height: 422px; z-index: 1; padding: 12px 6px 3px 12px; border: 1px solid #000000} .rightspace { position:relative; top: 0px; float:right; width:190px; height:422px; z-index: 2; background-color:#CCCCCC; padding:12px 6px 3px 8px;} #bottombar { height: 12px; margin-top: 12px; top: 12px; border-top: 1px solid #333399; background-color:#00FF33;} also, i don't think i'm using classes properly, but I think I just realised that. midgetporn I am desperate. I think I found a bug in Firefox, and I'm not sure how to work around it. The following code works in everything (IE 8, Chrome, Safari, Opera) except Firefox (version 3.6.3). Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug in Firefox? You can look what happens to the drop-down menu's on Menu 2 and 3 live by going to my site (deenfoxx dot com slash firefox-bug dot html). css Code: Original - css Code #main-nav { background-color: black; height: 40px; } #nav { position: relative; margin: 0; padding: 0; } #nav li { position: relative; float: left; display: table; width: 99px; height: 40px; border-right: 1px solid white; text-align: center; font-size: 10px; } #nav li:hover { background-color: darkred; } #nav a { display: table-cell; vertical-align: middle; line-height: 11px; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; color: #fff; } #nav li ul { position: absolute; padding: 0; background-color: gray; top: 40px; left: 0px; } #nav li ul li { width: 98px; border: 0; border-top: 1px solid white; } #main-nav html4strict Code: Original - html4strict Code <div id="main-nav"> <ul id="nav"> <li id="m1"><a href="#1">Main Menu 1</a></li> <li> <a href="#2">Main Menu 2</a> <ul> <li><a href="#2a">Sub-Category 1</a></li> <li><a href="#2b">Sub-Category<br/>with multiple lines</a></li> </ul> </li> <li> <a href="#3">Main Menu 3 with multiple lines</a> <ul> <li><a href="#3a">Sub-Category 2</a></li> </ul> </li> <li><a href="#4">Main Menu item which has a really long name on it</a></li> </ul> </div> <div id="main-nav"> The problem appears to be that "#nav li" happens to have position:relative; and a display:table; and "#nav li ul" is position:absolute;. Normally, absolute positioning requires its parent or ancestor position to be set, but when used with the table display, it doesn't work normally on Firefox--but it does on other browsers. Can someone help me with a workaround that does not involve altering the HTML? If I must, I will accept a workaround that requires changing the HTML, but I'll have to do some heavy duty recoding of Magento's core menu generation. Anyone that knows Magento knows I want to avoid that like the plague--my example is a very simplified version of the problem. The Page The problem is the div with the controls in it (wheel: <dropdown>, etc.). I need it to be bumped up against the bottom of the large image above it, and it's working fine in Firefox. Unfortunately, IE is bumping it downward to it wraps instead of of nestling into position. The css for it: .controls { clear: both; width: 660px; text-align: center; } And the instructions box it's bumping up against: #instructions { float: left; width: 300px; display: inline; margin-left: 5px; } The problem has been there for a while, but wasn't really noticeable until I added the default text for counters section, which pushed the rest off the bottom of the screen (at 1280 x 1024). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Take a look at the Firefox positioning and the disastrous positioning in IE and let me know what I need to do fix the div tag: Code: function areYouSure(){ var newDiv = document.createElement("div"); newDiv.setAttribute('style', 'position: absolute; left: 200px; top: 250px; text-align: center; width: 500px; height: 120px; z-index: 3; background-color: #999999;'); newDiv.setAttribute('id', 'add_to_db'); newDiv.innerHTML = "<div style='float: left; margin: 10px 10px 10px 10px;width: 480px; height: 100px; background-color: #D2C5A0;'>Are you sure you want to add it to the database?<br /><span style='position: absolute; left: 200px; top: 50px; text-align: center;'><input type='button' value='Yes' style='float:left; text-align: center; margin: 5px 5px 5px 5px; background-color: #4C5454; color: #FFFFFF; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12px; border-color: #98A9A9;' onClick='addToDb();' /><a href='javascript: cancelAddToDb();'><span style='float:left; text-align: center; margin: 5px 5px 5px 5px; background-color: #4C5454; color: #FFFFFF; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12px; border-color: #98A9A9; width: 60px; height: 20px; display: block;'>Cancel</span></a></span></div>"; // And then inject it: document.body.appendChild(newDiv); } function cancelAddToDb(){ var olddiv = document.getElementById('add_to_db'); if (olddiv && olddiv.parentNode && olddiv.parentNode.removeChild){ olddiv.parentNode.removeChild(olddiv); } } Good evening ladies and gents, This is my first post so I thank you guys for your help in advance, I usually just do trial and error with CSS untill it works but this one has me puzzled. on my website www/CanadaFinance/net the sidebar isnt aligning the same on IE and Firefox. In Firefox it aligns how I want it but in IE its far too left, the reason is the way <UL> is being treated by each browser. Can anyone teach me how to fish and get this problem fixed? Thanks. I'm trying to do some positioning with CSS laying out borders for my website which are composed of images. ie....border_left.jpg and border_bottom.jpg. My style sheet looks like this. .border_image_left { position: absolute; top: 119px; left: 0px } .border_image_bottom { position: absolute; top: 719px; left: 0px } In my html I have code like this. <p class="border_image_left"><img src="img/left_border.jpg"></p> <p class="border_image_bottom"><img src="img/bottom_border.jpg"></p> however IE and Firefox are rendering it different Firefox shows more space than IE. Anyway to correct this issue. Or any other trick for laying out borders with using a table? Thanks |
