CSS - Fixed Width Side Column That Can Still Get Squashed
Currently I have 2 fixed columns and a fluid center column. When I resize the window horizontally I want the columns to stay fixed until the center column will begin to overlap the side columns, at which point I'd like the side columns to begin fluidly squashing to accommodate. Is it possible to do this? Only thing I know of is max-width, but I'm not sure if that's correct as I've never used it before.
Any help would be VERY appreciated guys, as I need to know this quite soon. -Luke Similar TutorialsI'm working on a site which has a header and footer div, and in the main section in between, it has a narrow left div and main content to the right. I've got the overall width centered at 90%, and I want the left div to be 250px wide, and then the right main content div to be the remaining width of the 90%. I also want to make sure it doesn't resize below about 600px when the screen is resized. Am I better off setting a fixed width of the overall width instead of a percentage? That way I can make the page about 800px wide, left pane 250px, and main content 550px? Any other thoughts? Thanks. Hi I am trying to make a table to display some stuff within a fix sized window. I want to have 5 columns of fixed width and one column that spans the rest of the remaining space. The Idea is to allow the widths of the first 5 columns to be changed by a script and having the last one adapting as needed... html Code: Original - html Code <div class="container"><table cellspacing="0"> <colgroup> <col width="40" /> <col width="220" /> <col width="120" /> <col width="65" /> <col width="40" /> </colgroup> <thead> <tr> <th>A</th> <th>B</th> <th>C</th> <th>D</th> <th>E</th> <th style="width: 100%;></th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td>1</td> <td>2</td> <td>3</td> <td>4</td> <td>5</td> <td style="width: 100%;></td> </tr> </tbody> </table></div> <div class="container"><table cellspacing="0"> <colgroup> <col width="40" /> <col width="220" /> <col width="120" /> <col width="65" /> <col width="40" /> </colgroup> <thead> <tr> <th>A</th> <th>B</th> <th>C</th> <th>D</th> <th>E</th> <th style="width: 100%;></th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td>1</td> <td>2</td> <td>3</td> <td>4</td> <td>5</td> <td style="width: 100%;></td> </tr> </tbody> </table></div> css Code: Original - css Code div.container { height: 400px; width: 800px; overflow: scroll; } table { width: 100%; } td { border-style: solid; border-color: silver; border-width: 0px; padding: 1px 3px; } th { border-style: outset; border-color: silver; border-width: 2px; background: silver; padding: 1px 3px; }
It really does fill the entire space but the last column crushes all the other into their minimal width resulting in linebreaks between words inside the cells... Please help me Hello all, I am implementing a 2 column fixed width template. The problem is that the smaller column does not stretch to match the height of the taller column. All of the online templates I have found remedy this problem by setting a 1 px high background image to span the width of the container div. My problem is that I would like to place an image at the top and bottom of the smaller column. How can I achieve this? I need a combination of this: http://bonrouge.com/3c-hf-fixed.php and this: http://bonrouge.com/3c-hf-fluid.php I need the middle column to be a fixed width and the outer two to be fluid. I also need to maintain the 100% with header and footer at top and bottom respectively. Any ideas how to do this? Thanks. Hi all, I'm trying to achieve the following: <div id="left">This column is of blue background, and stretches all the way to the left.</div> <div id="center"> THIS COLUMN IS FIXED WIDTH, 760px </div> <div id="right">This column is of red background, and stretches all the way to the right.</div> Hope that is self explanatory.. I've Googled all this but can only find solutions for fluid "center" columns with fixed width right/left columns. I'm trying to do the opposite. Could anyone let me know how I can do this? I've got some messy CSS that definitely needs to be corrected, I'm trying out different things so here's my 'trial& error' code: Code: #left { background-color: blue; float: left; margin: auto; position: absolute; } #center { background: #DFDFEB url(../images/body/top.jpg) no-repeat; width: 760px; margin: 0 auto; } #right { background-color: red; } Thanks in advance! I've been having some issues getting a design for a site I'm co-authoring to display correctly using CSS. I know that what I'm trying to do should be possible, but I haven't been able to figure it out and am getting pretty damn frustrated with the whole thing. I could probably do it with tables, and right now I have it set up with some javascript that I threw together, but css+divs would be the ideal solution. Anyways, this is basically what I want to try and do (that's the javascript version). Just resize the window a bit to see what i'm getting at. Here's the source: Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" /> <title>Title</title> <style type="text/css"> <!-- #leftpane { float: left; height: 100%; border: 1px solid black; } #rightpane { float: right; height: 100%; border: 1px solid black; } --> </style> <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- // get rid of all this javascript and figure out a way to do this with css var windowWidth = 800; window.onload = function() { getWindowSize(); resizeLeftPane(); } window.onresize = function() { getWindowSize(); resizeLeftPane(); } function getWindowSize() { if(window.innerWidth) { windowWidth = window.innerWidth; } else if(document.documentElement.clientWidth) { windowWidth = document.documentElement.clientWidth; } else if(document.body.clientWidth) { windowWidth = document.body.clientWidth; } } function resizeLeftPane() { var rightpaneWidth = document.getElementById('rightpane').offsetWidth; var margin = 10; document.getElementById('leftpane').style.width = String(windowWidth - rightpaneWidth - margin * 3) +'px'; } //--> </script> </head> <body> <div id="leftpane"> <p>this pane needs to stretch as wide as it can while leaving room for the image at right, whose width is arbitrary</p> </div> <div id="rightpane"> <img src="http://movingboxstudios.com/testz0rz/images/box.jpg" height="100%" alt="image" /> </div> </body> </html> Basically I need a way to have 2 elements next to eachother, 1 of which is an arbitrary size and the other be wide enough to fill the rest of the containing block. Any help would be much appreciated. EDIT: Here's a link to the actual working design, maybe that'll help in understanding my question (don't open it in IE unless you want a facefull of ugly). Hi, I have hit the "wall" in my knowledge of CSS while trying to implement a "flex-width-equal-height-sidebar-layout" style of layout as a skin/theme for a message board system and need some help. My trouble occurs when a direct link to the post is used (instead of following the menu navigation system) where the top menu information/links area (the area between the banner and the post) is chopped off... The relevant portion of the CSS seems to be the .col_wrap {margin-top: 10px; border: 0; overflow: hidden; float: left; width: 100%; position: relative; z-index: 10; clear: both;} portion of my CSS because if I take out the overflow:hidden declaration then the menu portion of the skin/theme/layout shows correctly but the sidebar the shows the part which should be hidden at the bottom and the footer completely vanishes from view! My apologies but this is the best I can do without having the ability to post pics or urls which could better explain what is wrong and frankly speaking I don't know how anyone here can help given my inability to show the problem but hopefully someone knows or has run into this problem before or can offer some resources that may be of assistance.... i ve been playing with my page and been trying to modify the width of the page (divs) according to the browswer's width. The problem is i want the navigation menu on left to be fixed width (say 200px) and the center div and the right column to be variable width. Also, i want to set a minimum width , so that the floating divs dont roll below the navigation menu. here s the link to the page. try reducing ur browser windows size . the content div rolls down under theleft nav menu. http://ccc.1asphost.com/pacemakerpr...r/cicuitlab.htm Also , i get wierd result in netscape navigator. please help I have seen a design which I find pretty interesting where in the main site is aligned left and fixed width at say 700px wide. Yet the footer seems to span the entire screen. The header also seems to use the entire screen width but that is beign accomplished with the background image, but this footer goes all the way to end of the screen and naturally adjusts itself under all the content. Is there a way to get this effect? I'm at the very very very begaining of a table-less design (my first, actually). The problem is, since I have decided to have a non-fixed width, when the browser is minimized, at a certain point the design breaks. See it here (please don't make fun! it's just the start): SiliconSatan.com/test.php I'd like to set a minimum width, probably on the container <div>, so at a certain point it sort of becomes like a fixed width? No smaller than a set width? [EDIT] Also, I have a question about background color mismatch, but it was not quite OT for the CSS forum: http://forums.devshed.com/web-desig...e7t-403266.html Hey, So I have a three column layout being implemented as such: html: Code: <div class="content"> <div class="col1 column"></div> <div class="col3 column"></div> <div class="col2 column"> <div class="header">Header</div> </div> </div> CSS: Code: .column { padding: 10px; position:relative; } .header { background:#cfe6f5; color:#416383; font-size:11px; font-family:Arial; font-weight:300; padding-left:15px; } .col1 { float: left; width:250px; } .col2 { margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; } .col3 { float:right; width:250px; } The problem is that the width of the header div extends all the way to the left and right of the page when it's in the middle column, but behaves the way I want it to (extends to the left and right of the column) when it's in the left or right column. Any ideas? Thanks. --Surgery Hello, I am having difficulty with the center column on the following page: http://cbo4edu.org/index2.html I want to widen the center column so that the CBO NEWS heading touches the blue line which divides the center and right column. When I try to add width to the style sheet the left column moves out of alignment. Any help is much appreciated, thanks! Hello, (please also see attached/uploaded style sheet) I'm puzzled why (in the following code) the TEST #2 table renders as required (i.e. 2 rows in 1 column, all with the same cell WIDTH) but the table in TEST #1 seems to render the table cells (i.e. 2 columns in 1 row) without a common cell WIDTH. How can I get all the cells (there are plenty more!) in table TEST #1 to all be exactly the same width (preferably 85px)? Code: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://thinet/cgi-bin/thinetStyleSheet.css"> TEST #1 <table class="menu" border=1 CELLPADDING=2> <tr> <td class="pinkButtons"><a title="Treats menu" href='http://thinet/theread/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=82'>Treats</a></td> <td class="pinkButtons"><a title="New Starters, Leavers and Transfers" href='http://thinet/theread/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=41'>Joiners etc.</a></td> </tr> </table> <P> TEST #2 <table class="menu" border=1 CELLPADDING=2> <tr><td class="pinkButtons"><a title="Treats menu" href='http://thinet/theread/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=82'>Treats</a></td></tr> <tr><td class="pinkButtons"><a title="New Starters, Leavers and Transfers" href='http://thinet/theread/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=41'>Joiners etc.</a></td></tr> </table> I don't think I've quite grasped the idea of CSS yet?!?! Any help/pointers would be appreciated. Thanks, Andy Having coded using tables for the past 5 years, I'm coding my first site using pure CSS (hold back the laughter) ... I'm new to change. In any case ... I'm attempting to setup a homepage that has a fixed width and height. So far I've got a one-column header working fine. Beneath the one-column header I wish to have three columns with--dare I say it Web 2.0ish rounded corner cells--However the caveat is that these three cells need to all be a fixed height to go along with the page design. After two days of research, coffee, banging my head against my desk, I haven't been able to figure this one out. I am using an image at the top of each cell and an image at the bottom of each cell, but cannot get the cells to maintain a specific height. I am not able to use padding in my columns without breaking the design. Could someone, please, help me fixing this problem and also improve my code? Thanks, Miguel I saw an idea that I liked a whole lot for displaying pictures and that kind of thing. I didn't want to really hank the guys code, but tried to make my own version of it. The problem I have is yet again with Internet Explorer doing really stupid things with the pics I drop in my div's. It keeps adding a padding to it and it's beginning to aggravate me. Here is the code I had: body { height: 100%; margin: 0; padding: 0; background: #4F6A84; text-align: center; } #super_container { position: absolute; top: 70px; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 438px; background: #424242; padding: 0; margin: 0 auto; text-align: center; } #super_container { height: 438px; } #sub_container { width:775px; voice-family: "\"}\""; voice-family: inherit; width: 765px; /*border-right: 1px solid #7D1E2C; border-left: 1px solid #7D1E2C;*/ height: 438px; background: transparent; margin: 0 auto; } #sub_container { width: 765px;} #right{ float: right; width: 150px; height: 438px; background: #c5c5c5; } #left { float: left; width: 400px; height: 438px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: blue; overflow:visisble; background-image:url(new_test/test1.jpg); background-repeat:no-repeat; background-position:top left; } #left img { padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 5px solid #fff;} #center { margin-left: 401px; margin-right:151px; padding:0px 0px 0px 0px; border-top:1px solid green; } and the html <body> <div id="super_container"><!--start of super container--> <div id="sub_container"><!--start sub_container--> <div id="right"> </div> <div id="left"> </div> <div id="center"> test </div> </div><!--end sub_container--> </div><!---end of super conatiner--> </body> the problem becomes evident when I put an image in the htnl of the left element. It either looks likeit rises just above the top of the super-container, or it is flush with the top and leaves a margin underneath it. As always, any help or design/tips as to what I am doing wrong would be great. I am just experimenting with new things, trying to see what I can or cannot do. The idea would be to have a home page with picture and right column with info. Then on the sub-pages have nav and subnav on the middle and right columns and pics on the left. Just a dry run, trying to see where i am. Thanks for the help in advance! jon Hey all, I have been working on a site in CSS which looks pretty much how we want it to look in FF, however IE is giving me all sorts of problems. If you look at the following page http://www.mobileshop.com/3phones.com/viewphone.php in firefox you can see that the middle (white) column rests nicely between the two side columns, however, if you change to IE and look at the very same page then the middle column drops below the left side column. This is my first time at a css design and i cant work out why it is doing it, also the main logo is supposed to be centered, in IE it is left aligned. If you are viewing the source, you will see a tag soup of tables in the middle of the nice CSS, this is due to the fact that we pick up a feed and it dumps the data into our page. This will change to be pure CSS but i am running out of time to get the site launched first. One final question, i downloaded the Tidy HTML validator for firefox. I managed to get my pages passed the W3c online checker, but tidy claimed there was still errors. I went through and fixed all them to get a happy green tick but then when going back to W3C validation some things failed. I was under the impression that Tidy was developed by W3C, so why do they give varying results regarding validation? Thank you for your time. Hi, this is my first post. I have a problem with the navigation bar on a site that I'm developing (musicboxtheatre.com). It renders properly in firefox and safari, but, of course, IE is causing problems. It renders as steps. The tabs are dropping vertically so that their tops are aligning with the bottom of the previous tabs line-height. Does anyone know of a solution? Update: I rewrote everything, and it somehow works now. Nevermind. I having a bit of a problem with my div tags. I have set a table inside the divs to a fixed width of 300px and the same with the div tag. But if I was to insert text into the table such as: 11111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111 this makes the table and div tag expand to fit the text on one line. Making is disappear off the page so people have to scroll to view the text. I have tried the CSS command of "table-layout:fixed;" but this just makes the table end and cut of the end of the text. Is there anyway round this?? I cant get the side menu (colored in red at the moment...will eventually be white like the rest) to overflow: auto with 100% height....i know that you need a fixed with for overflow and the only solution i could find (havent tried it tho) was to use javascript to get the window dimensions but i am trying to avoid using javascript. heres the code: <b>The Page:</b> Code: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd"> <html lang="en"> <head> <title> TEST PAGE </title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" > <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="stylesheets/default.css"> </head> <body> <div id="content"> <div id="logo"> <img src="/Images/owlstreelogo.jpg" height="100px" width="300px" alt="Welcome to Owl's Tree"> </div> <div id="quicknav" style="height: 25px; background-image: url('/Images/quicknavbackdrop.jpg');"> <div id="quicknavtext" style="position: relative; top: 4px; margin-left: 25px; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;"> <a href="index.html">Home</a> <a href="">Profiles</a> <a href="">Chat</a> <a href="">Forums</a> <a href="">Messages</a> <a href="">Extras</a> <a href="">Tickets</a> <a href="">Suggestions</a> </div> </div> <div id="sidemenu" style="height: 405px; width: 200px; background-color: #FF0000; overflow: auto;"> <br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br> </div> </div> </body> </html> <b>The CSS</b> Code: body { background-image: url('/Images/grassbackdrop.jpg'); } a:link { color: #7E5C14; text-decoration: none; } a:visited { color: #7E5C14; text-decoration: none; } a:active { color: #000000; text-decoration: none; } a:hover { color: #00FF00; text-decoration: underline overline; } div#content { height: 100%; width: 100%; background-color: #FFFFFF; } I know that most of the css is in the page and not the external css but thats because i was modifying it heavily to see what would work and what wouldnt. The problem is the fixed width on the side menu as it wont be consistent across different screen resolutions. any help would be much appreciated as i dont want to continue work on this page until i can figure this problem out. |
