CSS - Divs In Divs (container Size)
The Example
I've read a bunch about how div's won't stretch to accomidate div's inside of them if they overrun the height/min-height set for the container div. How do I get around this? You can see the skeleton of the site above. It's fine unless you resize the window smaller than the content. Similar TutorialsOk, so I've learned to stay away from tables when you don't need them, and I have an instance where this is the case. I have a container div that has a header, content and a footer. On my home page, I have to divs next to each other with the same height and a div below them towards the right. To simplify my problem, look at this example. Code: <html> <body> <div style="float:right"> Hello there! </div> <hr> </body> </html> If there's a "float:right" on that div, the hr tag below doesn't get pushed down. But if I use relative positioning and don't use the floats, I can't put the two top divs next to each other. The other option is to use absolute positioning, but again content below doesn't get pushed down correctly. It seems that using "clear:both" works, but it seems weird that this has to be done. For example if I have floating divs in a container, I can get them to stretch out the container like so: Code: <html> <body> <div style="border: 1px solid #000; "> <div style="float:right"> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> </div> <div style="clear: both"></div> </div> <hr> </body> </html> Am I missing something fundamental here? Is there a better solution? Thanks in advance. Hi, what I'm trying to do is get two divs next to each other. That much I can do if I give them both a style of 'float:left;', but the problem with that is that they will overflow out of the div that they both sit in. Is there anyway to get two divs to sit next to each other, but to also expand the parent div if necessary? Thanks! --links aren't working so if you have the patience to put the files defined for page and style sheet below after evaxu dot com this is a challenging problem!-- Hey Guys, I've recently got back into web design by making my girlfriend a professional homepage in dreamweaver and css. So far so good, and pretty simple, however I've been trying to format the CV page but now it's starting to unravel... Basically, each element has had a div box put around it so that these can be arranged and floated to the positions I want. This seems to have worked in theory, however the bottom div (or 2 as they're columns next to each other) overlap the container and remove the whole container's background. I have put this online on /resumecssfail.html and you can use the navigation to see how the container background is supposed to be working as on other pages. The /style.css style sheet can be found and the relevant id's are container, maincontent and those starting with cv at the bottom. All that has been changed for this page really are width, float and some padding. However I have tried to use attributes like clear, positioning, display and various re-sizing and float changing to the last elements - whilst also putting the whole CV in other css boxes etc etc. I have put the code through the WC3 CSS validator which says it's valid to css 2.1. I've trawled through blogs and forum posts but just can't seem to find a solution :\ One thing that does seem to help is removing the last div tag (or putting in another tag and putting a character after it - I'm thinking of using a white ".") but this wouldn't be valid css now would it?! I'm going to use these for now on the official site page, but please use the link above to see my error page that I'd like help with. Thanks! Here's the template I'm working on: http://dhost.info/justusvizslas/template.php Here's my problem: I'm trying to create a centered, two-column layout with a header and a footer, sort of like the tutorial he http://nemesis1.f2o.org/aarchive?id=7 I've got everything working correctly and it looks fine in IE. However, in FireFox, the container div doesn't automatically adjust its height to be the same as the height of the divs inside. Instead, I have to set the height at a certain number of pixils to even get the container div to show up. When I do that, in IE the container div defaults to the same height as the larger of the two inner divs, but in FireFox the container div just stays at whatever pixil height I specified. That becomes problematic because I don't plan on having all my pagecontent divs with the same height. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. I've been looking at this for hours and haven't gotten it to work like it should. Here's the relevant code too: CSS Code: #container { width:792px; height:50px; margin: auto auto; color:#000000; background-color:#FFFFFF; background-image:url(design/menuimage.gif); background-repeat:repeat-y; } #navigation { width:125px; height:auto; padding:0px; float:left; margin-top:auto; vertical-align:top } #pagecontent { width:667px; height:auto; padding:0px; float:left; margin-top:auto; color:#000000; background-color:#FFFFFF; text-align:center } PHP Code: <div id="container"> <div id="navigation"><?php include "nav.php"; ?></div> <div id="pagecontent"> <br />Some more content here<br /> </div> </div> Again, thank you in advance for any help with this. If you're stumped and think it should work as-is, go ahead and go to the actual template I'm working on (first http link in this post) and look at it in IE and in FireFox to note the difference. I am having a problem with a couple divs not rendering correctly. I'm building an online tournament bracket system, and I'd like the divs to be flush with each other, but in all browsers it's rendering incorrectly. css Code: Original - css Code <style type="text/css"> div { font-family: Arial, Verdana, "Times New Roman", sans-serif; font-style: normal; color: Black; } .gamecontainer { position: absolute; width: 120px; } .player { font-size: 12px; background-color: lightblue; width: 100%; text-indent: 0.5em; border: solid 1px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; } .infoblock { border-right: solid 1px; font-size: 10px; width: 100%; text-indent: 0.5em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; } </style>

I'm hoping for the former. Suppose I have 3 divs, A, B, C and that I want the total width of A + B + C to equal the width of the screen. Suppose also that I want them to be inline. How can I have B to be a fixed width while A and C expand depending on the screen width (such that the width of A = the width of C)? I need to know what attributes to give to my container div in order for this to work correctly. I have a div and within it are many floating divs, each that contain an image thumbnail and caption. I do it this way so the images fit on the page dynamically and it works great. Unfortunately the container div does not wrap around the height of the images. This causes content that should appear below the images to show up behind them. How do I make the container div actually stretch around all the child divs? here is a code sample Code: <div style="border: 1px solid blue; width: 100%; display : inline;"> <div style="float: left; margin: 2px; I have tried numerous ways of floating and whatnot, here is what i want: I want to have one container, having 3 divs inside. of these 3 divs the left and the right one are fluid, the center one is an image with a fixed width. looking like this: Code: ________________________ l l l fluid fix fluid l ________________________ restrictions: i do not want to use positioning at all. best would be, if it is all achieved with float and margins, looking good in IE and FF .... i have a page up, that will show you my design .... note, that only the box containing the image is the problem part on that page (some of you will recognize this i believe) the names of the classes are textboxleft, textboxright and id big_logo thanx! i want to redesign the page i have to only be displayed with floats and margins and no more positioning .... Hi All, I'm using divs to layout some boxes. There are a lot of boxes but if they are sized to fit the screen tehy are unreadably small. Hence they go off the edge of the screen. The user will use the scroll bars to view the page. BUT ... the blocks off the screen in aren't obeying the width rules! The ones on the initial screen view are fine, but when you scroll sideways they have gone to an odd size. This only happens on my local machine and intranet. See teh attached screen shot. The bottom row of boxes should all be the same size. When posted to a www address it works fine. I've posted the page here which works and a txt file with the code is attached. Any ideas how to correct this? By the way this is for an internal intranet so only have to consider IE 6 users. Hi, I'm trying to build a modal box tool. Yes I know downloadable solutions exist, but wisely or not I'm building from scratch. And the javascript is fine, but on the CSS I feel I'm not quite doing it right. The HTML structure is pretty straightforward: PHP Code: <div id="PopUpBox" class="SinglePopUpBox" style="display:none"> <div class="TopBar"> <div class="CloseX"><a href="javascript:closePopUp()"><img src="Images/WindowCloseX.PNG" /></a></div> <div id="PopUpBoxTitle" class="Title"></div> </div> <div id="PopUpContainer" class="Container"><b style="color:#FFFF00">...Connectiing...</b></div> </div> and I just stick that on any underlying page with a button to make it appear. Ajax connects and injects the chosen content into PopUpContainer. Here's the issue. PopUpBox I want to be a percentage of the screen, to work on any size window. It appears in the middle via percentages. TopBar within that is a fixed height. And then PopUpContainer should fill the rest of the PopUpBox. So I set height=100% on PopUpContainer. But then it overflows the box by exactly the height of TopBar. At first I thought "hey, this sounds like a job for clearfloat" but that doesn't work. And it shouldn't, because floats aren't the issue. The problem I believe is going to 100% of a variable size. % of (% - x) to be more precise. So I "fix" this by giving PopUpBox enough padding-bottom to match the size of TopBar. This immediately feels bad, and I don't even know why. But it looks good, so I was prepared to shut up and accept it. However, IE7 (and probably 6, if I wanted to try it) don't play along. (Ditto IE8 in compatability mode, naturally.) They don't seem to respect that height=100% at all, and will make the Container shrink or bust out depending on what's inside. So what's the right approach to doing this? I'm quite willing to make moderate changes to my approach, but less happy to do stuff like add 12 pages of javascript to resize the box. CSS: PHP Code: div.SinglePopUpBox { color: #FFFFFF; border: 1px solid #CCCCCC; background-color: #000000; position:fixed; z-index: 100; left: 15%; top: 15%; right: 15%; bottom: 15%; padding:0px; padding-bottom:31px; /* Made to match height of TopBar + Container margin + Container Border + this border */ } div.SinglePopUpBox div.TopBar { background-color:#000000; background-image: url(Images/TopBar-Black.PNG); width:100%; height:26px; vertical-align:bottom; } div.SinglePopUpBox div.TopBar div.CloseX { float:right; margin-right:5px; } div.SinglePopUpBox div.TopBar div.Title { font-weight:bold; font-size:14px; padding-top:5px; padding-left:10px } div.SinglePopUpBox div.Container { background-image: url(Images/BackgroundBlue.JPG); overflow:auto; height:100%; padding-left:20px; padding-right:20px; margin-left:3px; margin-right:3px; border: 1px solid #CCCCCC; } Here's the site in Question: http://www.winchps.vic.edu.au It's a standard fixed width floated DIV columns with a wrapper. One thing it does have is a second DIV inside both columns to display the Gradient background over the top of the repeated background. It works perfect in Firefox & IE7 (with a tweak) but IE6 mkes the sidebar nested div drop below the original sidebar DIV click here for a screenshot for those lucky enough not to have IE6. Here's the CSS code for the basic layout: Code: body { font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Sans-Serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: center; margin: 0px 0px 60px 0px; padding:0px; border: 0; line-height: 2; } #header { width: 802px; } #wrapper { width: 802px; margin:0px; padding: 0px; text-align: left; margin: 0 auto; background: url(images/bodybg.jpg) center repeat-y; } #content { padding: 0px; margin: 0px; } #maingrad { background: url(images/winchcontentgrad.jpg) top left repeat-x; padding: 10px; } #main { width: 589px; float: right; background: url(images/winchcontentbg.jpg) repeat; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; } #mainstop { width: 589px; float: right; background: url(images/winchcontentbg.jpg) repeat; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; border-bottom: solid 1px #000; font-size: 10px; } #sidebargrad { background: url(images/winchsidebargrad.jpg) top left repeat-x; padding: 10px 5px 0px 10px; } #sidebar { width: 200px; float: left; background: url(images/winchsidebg.jpg) repeat; line-height: 2; font-size: 14px; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; } I obviously need to put a conditional comment in there, same for what I did for the minor IE7 tweak, but I'm struggling to suss out what's causing it, I haven't found the specific issue on any of the regular sites (PIE etc). Anyone got any ideas? Centering DIVs inside other DIVs in Firefox? Can it be done in a straight forward way? Setting the inner DIVs float to none seemed to work for IE but not FF. Alright, I've been working on my own custom border box for a while and I've almost got it, but it has a few problems still. How I do it is I have one div that contains it all (.box) that defines the height and width of the whole box. Then I have three boxRows to lay out the images, and then I define how three cells in each of those rows should behave, very much like how custom borders used to be done with tables. Here are the problems: In both firefox and internet explorer, the bottom row and the far right column actually appear OUTSIDE the .box containing box. There are two additional problems in internet explorer. First, the middle row handles the auto height differently and only expands about 10px instead of the height of the containing box. The second is that the whole middle row for some reason appears to be pushed to the right by about 16px. Any help would be appreciated. Here's the code: HTML: Code: <html> <head> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="reset.css" /> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="testBox.css"> </head> <body> <div class="box"> <div class="boxRowTop"> <div class="boxCellLeft"></div> <div class="boxCellMiddle"></div> <div class="boxCellRight"></div> </div> <div class="boxRowMiddle"> <div class="boxCellLeft"></div> <div class="boxCellMiddle"></div> <div class="boxCellRight"></div> </div> <div class="boxRowBottom"> <div class="boxCellLeft"></div> <div class="boxCellMiddle"></div> <div class="boxCellRight"></div> </div> </body> </html> And here is the layout css file: Code: /* Box classes */ .box { background: rgb(120,120,120); height: 200px; width: 500px; } .boxRowTop { height: 16px; position: relative; width:%100; } .boxRowMiddle { height: auto; width:%100; position: relative; } .boxRowBottom { height: 16px; width:%100; position: relative; } .boxCellLeft { height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 16px; } .boxCellMiddle { height: 100%; margin-left: 16px; margin-right: 16px; width: auto; } .boxCellRight { height: 100%; left: 100%; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 16px; } /* Define Cell Backgrounds/Images */ .boxRowTop .boxCellLeft { background: url(../LandingImages/topleft_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } .boxRowTop .boxCellMiddle { background: url(../LandingImages/top_border.png) repeat-x; } .boxRowTop .boxCellRight { background: url(../LandingImages/topright_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } .boxRowMiddle .boxCellLeft { background: url(../LandingImages/left_border.png) repeat-y; } .boxRowMiddle .boxCellMiddle { background: rgb(255,255,255); } .boxRowMiddle .boxCellRight { background: url(../LandingImages/right_border.png) repeat-y; } .boxRowBottom .boxCellLeft { background: url(../LandingImages/bottomleft_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } .boxRowBottom .boxCellMiddle { background: url(../LandingImages/bottom_border.png) repeat-x; } .boxRowBottom .boxCellRight { background: url(../LandingImages/bottomright_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } And last, the reset CSS, which I don't think has anything to do with the problems because if I take it out it still has them. Thanks! Hi; why my container display different of size from different computer? Polling of 1500 people by Auspoll early last week showed she has a 45 per cent approval rating, an 18 per cent disapproval rating and a whopping 37 per cent have reserved their judgment. The polling was taken before the asylum issue blew up in the Government's face. Labor's election planning has been brought forward by the rise of Ms Gillard as leader. A senior Labor source confirmed last week that former prime minister Kevin Rudd had been planning a late election, which was expected in about October. Among a series of announcements last week that have been widely interpreted as a clearing of the decks was a decision to axe the Green Loans program and put the Government's controversial internet filter on hold for a year. Even on social issues Ms Gillard appears to be travelling well. Her much publicised early admission that she does not believe in God is not troubling many voters. The Auspoll survey found that having an atheist Prime Minister was of no consequence to 62 per cent of people, 20 per cent said they actively support a PM who does not believe in God while less than 18 per cent were opposed. </div> </body> </html> Thanks for taking the time to read my question. I have a container that has a bunch of stuff in it. In IE the container grows (I know it shouldn't) with the content. FF the content doesn't. I want to use the same container on each page in my site, but each page will have different amounts of content making the page longer or shorter. I need the container to match the contents, and I would like to do it without making duplicates of the container in the CSS and changing only the height. For an example check out warrenpersowich.com Look at the home page and the Seminars page. See how the content is differen, but the container is the same. Thanks, Brad http://cad-design-engineering.com/New I double checked, and this page validates. (CSS and XHTML) The gray background on the right hand side - I can't adjust the width. When I do get a change, it breaks something - the links panel shifts to the bottom of the screen. Code: #container { width: 737px; height: 1%; overflow: visible; float: left; padding: 4px 0 0 0; margin-right: -185px; } This is the output from the Firefox Web Developer plugin: Code: #container (line 147) { width: 737px; height: 1%; overflow: visible; float: left; padding-top: 4px; padding-right-value: 0pt; padding-bottom: 0pt; padding-left-value: 0pt; padding-left-ltr-source: physical; padding-left-rtl-source: physical; padding-right-ltr-source: physical; padding-right-rtl-source: physical; margin-right-value: -185px; margin-right-ltr-source: physical; margin-right-rtl-source: physical; } Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've been perplexed for several days on this one. Thank you. Hi there, For some reason, I have a white space appearing above my divs. This is only happening in FF though. I have a header and 2 columns underneath, but the two columns underneath the header have a white gap above them. This is my CSS: Code: #clear{ clear:both; } #wrapper{ width: 780px; margin: 0 auto; } #header_wrapper{ width: 780px; background-image: url('img/header_bg.jpg'); height: 86px; } #logo{ float:left; margin-left: 20px; } #header_right{ float:right; margin-right: 20px; margin-top: 60px; } #left{ float:left; width: 580px; margin-top:0px; } #right{ float:right; background-color: #dddddd; width: 200px; } and this is my HTML Code: <div id="wrapper"> <div id="header_wrapper"> <div id="logo"> <a href="index.html"> <img src="img/logo.jpg" alt="Pitter's Painting" border="0" /> </a> </div> <div id="header_right"> <a href="index.html" class="orange">Home</a><span class="white_small"> | </span><a href="#" class="orange">Contact Us</a> </div> </div> <div id="clear"></div> <div id="left"> sadsad </div> <div id="right"> nav </div> Any ideas what I have wrong? |
