CSS - Width Overspills Screen, Help Aligning Divs
Hang on to this post, I have found a couple of answers, so will post again when i get stuck!
Charlie Similar TutorialsI have seen a design which I find pretty interesting where in the main site is aligned left and fixed width at say 700px wide. Yet the footer seems to span the entire screen. The header also seems to use the entire screen width but that is beign accomplished with the background image, but this footer goes all the way to end of the screen and naturally adjusts itself under all the content. Is there a way to get this effect? If I have a bunch of <div>'s floated here and there to form the layout of my page, if I want to have my design centered on the screen do I have to wrap the whole thing in a another pair of div's, ie <div align="center">...</div> ? I have a full css site that im in the mits of creating. It has 3 colums across in the main part of the site as you will see in the link below that some of my divs dont seem to be lining up w/ the top of the page... http://www.pollutionpaintball.com/version3/dennis_wells.html I have the first column that contains the thumbnails floating right with a margin-left of the navgition width and the profile div width. Next I have the navigation floated left Then I have the profile section in a div w/ a left - margin the size of the navigations width... any pointers would help... Hi, is there anyway to make the horizontal menu on the top of the webpage fit the entire width of the screen along with the titlebar? I mean, irrespective of the number of menu items, the menu should be exactly as wide as the screen. Thanks. hi, i m trying to design a page with a logo at the top.just like this site. http://richgirlstore.com/xcart/home.php but i want the logo to be displayed in a way that it covers the entire width of the browser window when a user opens the page.the screen sizes are different depending on the type of monitor used by people.so how can i fix this problem.thanks... I have these two blocks that need to be on the same row. As it is now, they are blocked into two seperate rows. What I'm trying to achieve, is to have the logo on the far left, where it is now. But, I'd like to have the Login text to the far right, just before the tiled background (sunflowers). I'm not sure how to fix this problem. Can anyone take a quick look? http://www.marginalspace.com/asif/index.php I'm trying to recreate a header that was built using tables. Here is an example of the original header. This is how I want it to look using div. http://65.175.116.253/logo/html_head_p1.html Here is the code for the table based header Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html> <head> </HEAD> <body bgcolor="white" leftmargin="0" topmargin="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0"> <basefont face="verdana"> <table width="780" height="68" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"> <tr> <td bgcolor="#004C91" align="center" valign="center" width="222"><img src="http://65.175.116.253/logo/logo.gif" width="196" height="49" hspace="10"> </td> <td bgcolor="#004C91" align="center" valign="center" width="600"> <img src="http://65.175.116.253/logo/banner.jpg"> </td> </tr> </table> </body> </html> Here is the header using the code with DIVs. http://65.175.116.253/logo/styletest.html Here is the code I have using divs. I'm confused as to how to align the images correctly in the divs... Can someone show me how to correct this? I put the style info in teh same document so it would be easier to read. Code: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> <html> <head> <style type="text/css"> #headerlogo { background: #004C91; position: absolute; width: 222px; height: 68px; top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; } #headerbanner { background: #004C91; position: absolute; width: 600px; height: 68px; top: 0px; padding-left: 50px; padding-right: 0px; } </style> <title>Untitled</title> </head> <body> <div id="headerlogo"><img src="http://65.175.116.253/logo/logo.gif"> <div id="headerbanner"><cfinclude template="banner.cfm"> </body> </html> My site lines up fine on Firefox. I need help aligning the flash block to the right of my site to the one on the left so that they are both on the same line. gpostal.net is the website so you can see the flash blocks. See how one is at the bottom right? I'm trying to get that to the top right and closer to the one on the left. I am trying to get these 2 divs, which are going to be acting as a "tab" off of the main layout of the page. The first one for Personal is working and displaying correctly as far as I can tell, but something is wrong with my Business one. It doesn't seem to be taking any of my styles for displaying that tab correctly, either that or the position is totally off. If anyone could help me out I'd greatly appreciate it. I would like to place the two forms on the webpage so that one is displayed on the left and the other on the right of the screen. Something like this URL http://craigbaldwin.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/52.jpg I have written the following test and the forms are placed correctly inside the left and right divs. Code: <HTML> <Head> <style type="text/css"> div.wrapper { position: relative; clear: both; width: 100%; border : 1px solid #000000; } div.left { float: left; width: 50%; background: #ffffff; border : 1px solid #000006; } div.right { float: right; width: 50%; background: #ffffff; border : 1px solid #000001; } </style> </Head> <Body> <div class="wrapper">Wrapper <div class="left">Left Box Left Box Left Box Left Box Left Box Left Box Left Box Left Box Left Box Left Box Left Box Left Box Left Box Left Box Left Box </div> <div class="right">Right Box Right Box Right Box Right Box Right Box Right Box Right Box Right Box Right Box Right Box Right Box Right Box Right Box Right Box </div> </div> </Body> </HTML> A couple of problems with the above. 1. In Internet explorer the divs are aligned correctly but in firefox it gets all messy. 2. As long as the window is maximised then i the divs are aligned vertically correctly. If i resize the browser window then they are no longer aligned vertically. Is there a way to make them always next to each other from left to right even if the window is resized? (try resizing the window for the example i showed above) Thanks I camped out this weekend and worked all day and night to build one of the more advanced forms that I need. I am really pleased with the results so far, at least in IE. It is not perfect. I am having some problems with how it looks in FireFox. It looks great in IE. However, in Firefox, you can see the sections are bleeding together. Each is in it's own DIV set as BLOCK. The sections are Core Details Features Description Contact/Shipping/Payment Promotion Brief example <div> <h2>Core</h2> content bla bla bla </div> <div> <h2>Details</h2> content bla bla bla </div> The H2 headers, the text is bleeding into the div of the section before it. In IE, it doesn't. in FF, it's all jumbled up. Here's a link to an .html file of the form. It should open up in any browser since it references CSS by url and graphics by url. Can anybody check and see if it is a quick fix? I'm not sure what the problem is. I don't have any extra cash at the moment so I'm stuck. I've been trying to figure out the problem all weekend to no avail. http://quotes.cybercon.net/classifiedsform.html Also, here are two pics. Screenshots from IE and FF. In the IE screenshot, you can see how I outlined each section. The H2 headline tag (core/details/description/feature) is bleeding into the previous section. http://quotes.cybercon.net/classifiedformIE.jpg http://quotes.cybercon.net/classifiedformFF.jpg Thanks! -Jason I've been working on a CSS style for a web site, and I've got a small issue with the right hand column not staying within the bounds of the screen. When using a tool to see where the div's borders the right is about 200 px going off the right of the screen, making the screen horizontally scrolling. I am not a CSS expert. I know enough to get around, but this I don't understand. (I might have posted too much, but I figured if someone needed something more, it's already all there.) Thanks for any assistance that can be provided. However, unless I use a bunch of HTML breaks (which will result in an uneven template), I can't figure out how to do it. I've tried to vertical-align them and etc. Any help is appreciated. Oh, I know my code could be a bit more clean, this is just a comp. I've also tested this on FF so far. I doubt IE will return favourable results either. My example: www.efacln.com/Untitled-1.html My CSS code: Code: #container { MARGIN: 5px; } #header_container { border-color: black; BORDER-STYLE: solid; BORDER-WIDTH: thin; BORDER-LEFT: none; BORDER-RIGHT: none; WIDTH: 100%; } #header_content { BORDER-COLOR: black; BORDER-STYLE: solid; BORDER-WIDTH: thin; BORDER-TOP: none; BORDER-BOTTOM: none; WIDTH: 600px; HEIGHT: 100px; MARGIN-LEFT: auto; MARGIN-RIGHT: auto; } #kirk_news { BORDER-COLOR: black; BORDER-STYLE: solid; BORDER-WIDTH: thin; WIDTH: 550px; HEIGHT: 100px; FLOAT: left; POSITION: absolute; MARGIN-TOP: 5px; MARGIN-RIGHT: 2.5px; } #navigationblock { BORDER-COLOR: black; BORDER-STYLE: solid; BORDER-WIDTH: THIN; WIDTH: 410px; POSITION: relative; FLOAT: RIGHt; MARGIN-TOP: 5px; MARGIN-LEFT: 2.5px; } #scott_news { BORDER-COLOR: black; BORDER-STYLE: solid; BORDER-WIDTH: thin; width: 410PX; MARGIN-TOP: 1 px; MARGIN-TOP: 5px; } </STYLE> Hi - I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to CSS etc. but have been asked to modify some code for someone. Basically it's a simple site that has the main content centered on the screen (about 960px wide). However there is a large banner image that is about 2000px wide that is supposed to stretch as wide as say a large 27" mac. I am not sure if this is the correct way to do it but I guess they couldn't use a smaller image and repeat it because there is a unique design/pattern throughout the whole width. Anyway, on smaller browsers everything looks good except the horizontal scroll bar allows the user to scroll all the way to to the right. Is there anyway to clip the image on the top to prevent the scroll bar from showing based on screen width? Hope that makes sense. Thanks. Hi All Need some help with a positioning/alignment problem - divs not vertically aligning with body background image in IE: http://www.flatsinbraunton.co.uk/ce/ Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <title>Colin Essery Carpets</title> <style type="text/css"> html { font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; } body { font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; text-align: center; background-image:url(images/bg-body.jpg); background-repeat:repeat-x; } #container { position: relative; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; width: 800px; text-align: left; } #logo { position:absolute; left:0px; top:78px; width:327px; height:102px; } #headstrap { position:absolute; left:327px; top:78px; width:473px; height:102px; } img { border-style: none; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="container"> <div id="logo"> <a href="index.php"><img src="images/logo-main.gif" alt="Colin Essery Carpets - North Devon" width="328" height="102" /></a> </div> <div id="headstrap"> <img src="images/head-strapline.gif" alt="Colin Essery Carpets - North Devon" width="473" height="102" /> </div> </div><!--END CONTAINER DIV --> </body> </html> Any help welcome thanks Rich I hope I can explain this in a way that makes sense. I have a table layout where the number of columns is variable (sometimes it can have 1 column, sometimes it can have up to 9 columns), depending on what data is filled out on a previous form. The code in question: Code: <tr> <td> <div style="float: left; width: 13px"><img src="arrow.gif"></div> <div style="float: left; width: 93%;">My explanatory text goes here!</div> </td> <td> Column 2 Text </td> <td> Column 3 Text (and so on) </td> </tr> The two divs there need to float next to each other -- the first div is a little 13x13 arrow, the second div is some explanatory text. I can not just float the image left (and not put the text in a div), because the client wants the text to be left aligned in the div, not wrapping around the image. The issue: If there are less than 5 or 6 columns, it works beautifully. If you put more columns in there, then the second div appears below the first div. I've been fiddling with the widths on the second div, but it has to be a percentage (not a set number of pixels), because the number of columns is variable (as is the width of those columns). How can I make the columns float next to each other regardless of the width of the table cell that they are within? Any help is appreciated. Firefox 3.6 is showing a blank screen for everything I have set as 100% width but looks ok in Firefox 5. My main concern at this point is this: I'm trying to figure out how to move the 4 navigation items (the owl, contact, portfolio and home) closer to the tree without going over or under it. Any help or suggestions I can get are much appreciated! ------------------------------------- Here's the HTML: Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> <title>ATHENA STUDIOS - web design & graphic design in Charlottetown, PEI</title> <link rel="shortcut icon" href="layout/hoot.ico" /> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="athena.css" /> </head> <body> <div id="page-wrap"> <!-----page wrap div start------> <div id="top"> <!-----top div start ------> <img src="layout/header.png" alt="header image ATHENA STUDIOS WEB DESIGN, GRAPHIC DEIGN & FRONT END DEVELOPMENT" /> </div> <!-----top div end ------> <div id="navbar"> <!-----nav bar BACKGROUND div start------> </div> <!-----nav bar BACKGROUND div end------> <div id="navigation"> <!-----navigation div start------> <ul id="menu"> <li class="owl"><a href="index.html">Owl</a></li> <li class="contact"><a href="/contact/">Contact</a></li> <li class="portfolio"><a href="/portfolio/">Portfolio</a></li> <li class="home"><a href="index.html">Home</a></li> </ul> </div> <!-----navigation div start------> </div> <!-----page wrap end div------> </body> </html> ----------------------------------------- And here's the CSS: Code: @charset "UTF-8"; /* CSS Document */ body { width:100%; font-size: 13px; font-family: Helvetica, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 1.4; background: url(../layout/bg.png); background-attachment:fixed; margin:0; padding:0; text-align: center; } a, a:link { color: #000000; text-decoration: none; } a:hover { color: #31636c; text-decoration: none; } a.footer:link { color: #ddcfb2; } a.footer:hover { color: #ddcfb21; } a.footer:visited { color: #ddcfb2; } a.footer:active { color: #ddcfb2; } #page-wrap { width: 100% ; margin: auto ; text-align: center; } #top { width:100%; background:url(layout/skybg.png); background-repeat:repeat-x; text-align: center; position:relative; z-index: 500; } #navbar { width:100%; height:102px; margin-top:-139px; padding-top:15px; background:url(layout/navbg.png); background-repeat:repeat-x; } #navigation { width:100%; height:155px; text-align:center; margin-top:-154px; } /* Everything CSS Sprite Menu */ ul#menu { text-align:center; position:relative; z-index: 501; padding:0; list-style:none; clear:both;} #menu li{overflow:hidden; text-indent:-9999px; display:inline; text-align:center; float:left; margin-right:10px;} #menu li a{background:url('layout/navigation.png') no-repeat; width:100%; height:100%; display:block;} /* Owl Button */ #menu li.owl{width:158px; height:146px;} #menu li.owl a{background-position:0px 0px;} #menu li.owl a:hover{background-position:0px -2px;} /* Contact Button */ #menu li.contact{width:150px; height:158px;} #menu li.contact a{background-position:-158px 0px;} #menu li.contact a:hover{background-position:-158px -2px;} /* Portfolio Button */ #menu li.portfolio{width:238px; height:146px;} #menu li.portfolio a{background-position:-308px 0px;} #menu li.portfolio a:hover{background-position:-308px -2px;} /* Home Button */ #menu li.home{width:114px; height:146px;} #menu li.home a{background-position:-546px 0px;} #menu li.home a:hover{background-position:-546px -2px;} NEVER MIND. Got it. lol I have two div tags that I want to float next to each other. The page looks like this <table>These Tables stretch 100% of the width</table> <table>''</table> <div class="ParentDiv"> <div class="menuholder"></div> <div class="ChildDiv"></div></div> in FF everything works the way I want to. In IE if I shrink down the browser then the second div tag drops below the first. I want to change this so that it does not drop below but remains in the same place. Is there anything I can set to do that? If I remove the float and change the position on the menuholder the childdiv tag does not drop but the menuHolder content does not stretch the size of the parentDiv and gets chopped off at the height of the childDiv Code: .ParentDiv { position: relative; width: 100%; width:expression(document.body.clientWidth < 997 ? '997px' : '100%'); min-width:997px; max-width:100%; overflow:hidden; min-height: 400px; } .ChildDiv { position: relative; width: 100%; min-height: 400px; } .menuholder { background-color: #EFF3F5; color: #eef; position: relative; float: left; left: 0px; top: 0px; overflow: hidden; width: 160px; z-index: 100; } Here is the relevant HTML code: <table> <tr> <td> <div style="float:left;"> <div class="middle"><div class="r"><div class="l"> <a id="gridtitle" href="javascript:void(0)" onclick="reload()"></a> </div></div></div> <div style="width: 200px;"> <a href="#" onclick="addheader()"><img border="0" src="tab_new_header.png" alt="Delete this grid"/></a> <a href="#" onclick="addfooter()"><img border="0" srctab_new_footer.png" alt="Delete this grid"/></a> </div> </div> <div style="float:right;"> <a href="#" onclick="javascript:toggleLayer('newgrid');"><img border="0" src="button_add.png" alt="Add a grid"/></a> <a href="#" onclick="deleteGrid()"><img border="0" src="button_delete.png" alt="Delete this grid"/></a> </div> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <div id="gridbox3" class="gridbox" width="870px" height="600px" style="background-color:white;"></div> </td> </tr> </table> And the relevant CSS code [which just sets the background of the tab]: .l {background: url(../../datadir/client/images/billinggrid/name_sidebg1.png) 0 0 no-repeat; height: 43px;} .r {background: url(../../datadir/client/images/billinggrid/name_sidebg2.png) 100% 0 no-repeat; height: 43px;} .middle {background: url(../../datadir/client/images/billinggrid/name_sidebg.png); height: 43px;} This is the output (i can't post images?) http://i34 [.] tinypic [.] com/4hpqag [.] png The first problem I am having is that the div my gridtitle (CIBC) is in does not set its width automatically to the text width. Instaed, it spans the whole table ... Position-wise, I would like the tab with "CIBC" to be to the far left, the header and footer tabs to be right of "CIBC" but still floating left, and the + and x signs to be floating right, all on the same line. Help? Thanks in advance. |
