CSS - Expert Help: Ie Distorted Block In Layout
Similar TutorialsI have been developing an intranet app which is to use a number of CSS/Javascript features for the required interactivity. The page I am having trouble with will eventually be integrated in an iframe. That said, I believe the conflict is coming from the top horizontal bar which has a fixed position. When the green bar (which will represent Gantt data) is clicked I have a small "hover" note which will display a brief summary. I had tested each of the page components individually, and had them working, and am now integrating the various pieces. The problem is that in IE when the bar is clicked, the note seems to display correctly, but the top of the #content div blacks out (or sometimes distorts strangely) and requires a page refresh to right the display. There is too much code to place here, so the page is available at: http://www.brianwurster.com/layout/test.php Any help with this problem would be GREATLY appreciated as I am having a terrible time disgnosing the problem. I have been using css for a while, but mostly just for style, not layout. I am trying to do a site, with basically three divs. One on the left for content, two on the right...one for a menu, and the other showing an image. I have stripped down the page to the smallest possible that I can show the problem. Basically, I want the image (red background) to be below the menu (dark purple bg), and both of them on the right of the content (lavendar bg). I have validated the html, but I am not getting a response from the css validator right now. Here is my html so far: Code: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "(URL address blocked: See forum rules)"> <html> <head> <title>Vote YES Mosinee!</title> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> <style type="text/css"> body{ padding: 0px; background-color: #FFF; text-align: center; font: 76% Verdana,Arial,sans-serif; } div#container{ width:800px; margin: 0 auto; text-align: left; background: #ff0; } div#content{ background: #d1c9e2; width:550px; } div#nav{ float: right; width:240px; background: #484393; } div#nav p{ padding: 5px 0; } div#nav h2{ font-size: 110%; color: #333; } div#imageSection{ float: right; width: 240px; background: #ff0000; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="container"> <div id="nav"> <ul> <li>There will be a menu here.</li> <li>It will have many items.</li> <li>It will have many items.</li> <li>It will have many items.</li> <li>It will have many items.</li> <li>It will have many items.</li> <li>It will have many items.</li> <li>It will have many items.</li> <li>It will have many items.</li> </ul> </div> <div id="imageSection"> <img src="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)" alt="Children"> </div> <div id="content"> <p>Vote YES is dedicated to reaching out to the members of the Mosinee community and to raising awareness of the situation our elementary students face each school day. Hello. I really need some help with this problem. If you are willing to help, check out the site with my problem: http://www.test.cos.ucf.edu/content/deans/staff.html (this link may expire within a few months of post date) I'm a student, but I'm getting paid to develop this site (not enough payment of course ). Hopefully you don't mind helping anyways. Looking at this page in Firefox shows no problems, yet in IE 7, it looks much worse. There is a problem which I am not aware of. Is it like anything you have heard of? Thank you for the help --------------------- FIXED --------------------- The problem was with a contained div with overflow set for vertical scrolling. However, there was a ul with li's floating within it within the div to make a grid. Each li had an image within it with position:relative. This relative positioning screwed up the scrolling for the div. So I added padding to each li element to make up for the top and left properties. If you want a better explanation please ask. Since I could not quickly figure out how to delete this post, I figured I would explain the solution. Thanks! Hi, I have over 7 years of programming experience. Code: <div onclick="foo();"> <div style="float:left;"><img></div> <div style="float:left;"> <div>row 1</div> <div>row 2</div> <div>row 3</div> </div> </div> however there is a problem in IE only. my main div has an onclick handler. when floating divs are used, the onclick only works when you click text or image inside the div. is there a way i can avoid using floats and achieve the same result? More precisiely: Firefox will wrap text over 12px correctly yet for small text, the p block will not wrap properly and some text will be cropped. I'm not fussy about justification but even when I removed it I would get the same problem. I'm sure there's a perfectly logical solution to this problem. Maybe the width:100% gets inherited by the td and p but that should not affect the layout...Despite my various experiements of chaging the width and the wrapping properties, I could not solve this. I'm still learning the intricasies of block elements in CSS2 so I would definitely appreciate any help! Thanks in advance, Angelos Hello, I am using an OS Commerce layout for a client's website. On this page - www.mts-diesel.com you will see how I have the homepage laid out in anticipation of design, with 3 divs of varying colors. One div with an id of #hp_left is where I want to put a nice jquery code. But when I insert that into #hp_left it breaks the whole layout, was seen here www.mts-diesel.com/index2.php I'm not sure what in the css in the code for this script is breaking my layout but Ithought someone here might be willing to shed some light. A big thank you. Tom I am working on the new home page which is based on a template. The left sideColumn is working fine, however I am having a few problems with the mainColumn layout. Here is a static image to show what I want it to look like Here are the problems I am having: 1) The #scroll box is place where I want it in IE but in foxfire it is right up against the left side of the #sideColumn partially hidden. There will be text that scrolls into this box and stops. I haven't started on the part yet - in case that makes a difference. Not my choice, but that is what the bosses want. 2) I want the image centered horizontal within the #mainColumn. Here is what I have for the css: #home img { margin: 5px auto 5px auto; } which I thought would do the trick, but it's not. 3) I want the p text to have a 40px margin on the right and left side like the .large does. Here is what I have for the css: #home p, .large { margin: auto 40px auto 40px; } It works for the .large (Welcome to Vitalograph), but not for the text below it. At one point I had it working, but after addtional changes fixing other problems, now it doesn't and I can't figure out why. Here is the xhtml starting at the 2 column part (wrapper): Code: <!--begin wrapper--> <div id="wrapper"> <!--begin side column --> <div id="sideColumn"> <span class="category">Products</span> <ul> <li><a href="/products/spirometers.html">Spirometers</a></li> <li><a href="/products/clinical_trials.html">Clinical Trials</a></li> <li><a href="/products/asthma_copd.html">Asthma & COPD</a></li> <li><a href="/products/smoking_cessation.html">Smoking Cessation</a></li> <li><a href="/products/resuscitaion.html">Resuscitation</a></li> </ul> <span class="category">Resources</span> <ul> <li><a href="/resources/contact_us.html">Customer Support</a></li> <li><a href="/resources/training_services.html">Training & Services</a></li> <li><a href="/resources/exhibitions.html">Exhibitions</a></li> <li><a href="/resources/newsletters.html">Newsletters</a></li> <li><a href="/resources/downloads.html">Downloads</a></li> <li><a href="/resources/useful_links.html">Useful Links</a></li> <li><a href="/resources/industry_information.html">Industry Information</a></li> <li><a href="/resources/industry_information.html">Sitemap</a></li> </ul> </div> <!--end of side column --> <!--begin main column --> <div id="mainColumn"> <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="Main_Section" --> <div id="home"> <div id="scroll"><span>scrolling news will go hear and stop</span></div> <img src="/images/boys_bubbles.gif" width="485" height="333" alt="boys and bubbles" /> <span class="large">Welcome to Vitalograph</span> <p>Vitalgraph offers a wide range of spirometers along with other asthma management equipment with over 40 years experience. Hi there and thanks for reading & helping! I am new to this site, but here is my question: I need to build about a 20 page website. I have been told I should do the "layout" for each page using CSS. Is it possible for each page to "link" to one CSS file for layout instructions? I have found suitable CSS layout templates but am unsure how to link each page to the external CSS file for a basic "header, 2 column, footer" layout, or if it is even possible? http://warcraftpress.com/theme/theme.html I'm trying to have #footer be pushed down instead of the menu lapping over it. Basically, I want the menu to push it down, but it just overlays it. Thanks Hi guys I was just wondering why cant i see these two <b></b> "blocks" on each side of my <UL> block in ie6 but in Firefox i can? Screenshot of situation: here is my code for the <b> blocks: PHP Code: .navbar b.lefty { display:block; position:absolute; z-index:604; height:100%; width:20px; top:0px; left:-20px; padding:0; margin:0; background-color:#ffffff; } .navbar b.righty { display:block; position:absolute; z-index:604; height:100%; width:20px; top:0px; left:136px; padding:0; margin:0; background-color:#ffffff; } Here is my code for the <UL> block: PHP Code: .navbar :hover ul { z-index:604; width:136px; top:40px; left:0px; padding:0; margin:0; background-color:#333333; text-align:left;} Now here is my HTML: PHP Code: <ul> <b class="lefty">d</b> <li><a href="#">Link</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link</a></li> <b class="righty">d</b> </ul> Hi Guys, I have a generic Question/Problem to do with a Block Element (in this case a div) in an li tag. This seems to be a problem in browsers like IE8 and Safari but not IE7 and the latest FireFox version. Where with the div item 'drops down' a line from the li bullet. Like this (. is the li): . Here is My Div Content I want it to be like this: . Here is My Div Content Now this only doesn't happen if I just have plan text between the div with no class, so I'm thinking that something in my css dragHandle class may be at fault. Either that or I need to add something to it to do with float or display: line or block etc? Any thoughts or ideas are most appriciated (note I'm using a div in an li as I'm using the AJAX reorder list control and need something for a 'drag handle' to select an item in the list. The reorderlist uses ul and li to display itslef to I have to use this markup structure). Here is my markup. <ul> <li> <div class="dragHandle"> </div> </li> </ul> DragHandle class is as follows .dragHandle { width: 20px; height: 25px; background-image: url(/styles/icons/selectarrow.JPG); background-position: center; background-repeat: no-repeat; cursor: move; } I have this CSS for my "globalNav" class: .globalNav {width: 217px; background-image:url(images/barbackground.jpg); background-color: #1B619E; background-repeat: repeat-x; border-right: 1px solid #075284; position: absolute; left: 0px; top: 125px; height: 450px} .globalNav A {background-color: #004E82; border-top: 1px solid #407AA1; border-bottom: 1px solid #00375C; border-right: #00406B; color: white; font-weight: bold; padding: 2px 5px 2px 5px; text-decoration: none; display: block} This is my code for globalNav: <div class="globalNav"> <a href="#">Global 1</a> <a href="#">Global 2</a> <a href="#">Global 3</a> <a href="#">Global 4</a> <a href="#">Global 5</a> <a href="#">Global 6</a> </div> For whatever reason, display block won't work in IE unless I remove the width, height, and positioning. Anyone know any tricks to make this work? Hi guys, can you give me some tips to centering a block (<div>) of code? I would like it centered vertically and horizontally and I would also like the background of the element centered (so the whole thing). text-align doesn't work, it only centers the text, not the element. Thanks, Josh I would like to have a table with 6 td's across and the 7th td to break line and default to under neath the first td. I tried using display block and firebug outline the area where my content should be but it is still to the right of the 6th td. I would just like to do this to keep it in the same row so i can hide and show it dynamically outside of those first 6 td's. i coudnt find the forum search feature...? but anyone help with wht i am doing wrong? much appreciated In the attached gif, you should be able to see exactly what I mean, if I don't explain it well enough. I have a containing block, #content_main, defined as such: Code: #content_main { margin-left: 170px; padding: .5cm .25cm 50px; } Headers (h1, h2, h3, etc) are used inside #content_main and are defined like this: Code: h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 { font-family: georgia, serif; border-bottom: 1px solid #009; } If you look at the attached gif, you'll see the problem. The top one is what happens. It extends the border-bottom to the width of the containing block, even though it places the text correctly. The second one "Something Else" is what I want it to look like. I edited that with Fireworks. Since it renders the same in Firefox and IE, I figure it's my code that's wrong. Any thoughts? MPEDrummer Hi, im trying to create a block of colour of various width. Im trying to do it with <span> like so <span style="background-color:#336699; width:100px"></span> Now why wouldnt that work and is there a better way to do what im trying to achieve? I have several <a>'s on my page, where their display is set to block, and I want to put a submit button in each of them. When I put the <button> in the <a></a>, though, the submit button doesn't go to the processing page, it just goes where the <a> was headed. How to I get the submit button to go to the processing page and not where the <a> was headed? I could put the submit button below the <a> block, but that's very unattractive, and I want the user to be able to click anywhere in the block to go to the next page (except for where the submit button is.) Any help much appreciated! I'm very aware of all sorts of IE bugs, but I've never heard of a safari bug with the display:block property within an inline anchor.
