CSS - Float Property (make Divs Extend Beyond Bottom)
Well, I'm trying to make a comments-page for a certain thing, and I can't get the image to stop going over the bottom of the div, without using the min-height property. Can someone help?

The page views fine in IE, but in firefox I cannot get the green box (div id=maincontent) to extend down to the bottom of the black box... as you can see the black box simply flows out. The green box is extending down to the bottom of the white box, but it stops there. Can anyone think of any obvious ways to fix this? I tried placing a clear:both div at the bottom of main content (which is the red bar you can see) , but that too only actually clears the white box, not the black one. Here's the main bits of css... Code: #maincontent { position:relative; width:762px; margin-top:0px; background-image:url(contentbkg.jpg); background-repeat:no-repeat; padding-top:10px; text-align:left; } #left { font-size:12px; color:#FFFFFF; float:left; margin-left:5px; margin-top:10px; } #right { color:#FFFFFF; float:right; margin-right:10px; margin-top:10px; position:absolute; #position:relative; } #translucentblack { width: 150px; float:right; background-color: #000000; filter:alpha(opacity=40); -moz-opacity:0.4; opacity: 0.4; font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; padding:5px; } #opaqueblack { width: 150px; background-color: transparent; float:right; position:absolute; margin-left:592px; #margin-left:22px; z-index: 2; font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; padding:5px; } #translucentbkg { color:#FFFFFF; font-size:12px; width: 566px; background-color:#FFFFFF ; filter:alpha(opacity=80); -moz-opacity:0.8; opacity: 0.8; padding:5px; text-align:left; font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; } #opaquetext { color:#006600; font-size:12px; width: 566px; background-color: transparent; position:absolute; z-index: 2; padding:5px; text-align:left; font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; } basically left and right sit inside maincontent, then opaquetext and translucentbkg sit inside left, whilst opaqueblack and translucentblack sit inside right! phew The reason for opaque and translucent divs is that I'm using mozilla's tip here http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Useful_CSS_tips:Color_and_Background mirroring content and positioning one div over another to get semi transparent backgrounds. Hope that all made sense... any help would be incredible!!! thanks! I have a 3 column layout. Each column may contain one or two articles with a border at the bottom of each article. The There are two borders between the three columns. I'm trying to use floated divs as containers for each of the columns, with a left-hand border in the center and right columns. You can see a non-css example at: http://www.sananselmopreschool.org/pilot/ Well, no matter what I do, I haven't been able to get the column containers to extend to the bottom of the page in IE. If I set them to height:100%, they seem to shoot out to 150% or so. body { height:100%; padding:0; margin:0; background-color:#ECF6DD; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 11px; color: #707070; text-align:center; border: 1px solid purple; } .body_container { position: relative; height:100%; width:100%; left: 0px; border: 1px groove darkred; } .body_position_center { height:100%; position:relative; width:780px; margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; border-collapse:collapse; border: 1px solid #999 ; } .header { padding:0; margin:0; position:relative; width:766px; height:195px; } .leftblock { position: relative; height:100%; border-left:3px dotted #228B22; float:left; width:250px; } .centerblock { position: relative; height:100%; border-left:3px dotted #228B22; float:left; width:250px; } .rightblock { position: relative; height:100%; border-left:3px dotted #228B22; float:left; width:250px; } .blockcontents { padding-top:14px; padding-bottom:14px; border-bottom : 3px dotted #228B22; text-align:left; } Any suggestions would be appreciated. I haven't used much javascript, so unless I can see an example, it might be tough to work out a javascript solution. I'm currently working on a page that has a 3-column layout. The layout is fine as along as the content of the columns doesn't extend passed its given width. Is there a way to have the text either wrap or extend without extending the div it's in. I have attached a pic of what's happening (this is only when I get errors, the rest of the content doesn't extend the div). Is there a way to hide the text that goes beyond the div width? CSS Code: /* columns */ #lcol { float: left; width: 190px; vertical-align: top; } #mcol { float: right; width: 350px; padding-right: 10px; vertical-align: top; } #rcol { float: right; width: 200px; vertical-align: top; } /* gray box */ .gray_box_frame { background-color: #fff; border: solid 1px #404040; width: 100%; padding: 0px; margin: 3px 0px 3px 0px; } .gray_box_head { height: 18px; background-color: #404040; } .gray_smm, .green_smm { display: inline; float: right; height: 18px; cursor: pointer; } .gray_box_content, .green_box_content { margin: 0px; padding: 5px; } Thanks for all the continued help/support. . . Makes learning CSS so much easier! Link: www.vairlinecms.com Question: I set the html up like this on purpose to grasp the concept. <p> tags are block level containers. So each new set of <p> tags should equal start on new line. w/the float property holding a value of left, it floats all content to the left. Since each instance of float occurs in its own container...the two different <p> sets should not be affected. In short, the password: paragraph should be on a new line, not both on the same line. There should be no need to clear it because they are in their own containers - which are block level. Where is my logic/understanding of CSS flawed? HTML: Code: <div id="clientLoginBoxBody"> <form action=#"> <br /> <p class="user">Username:</p> <p class="pass">Password:</p> </form> </div> CSS: Code: #clientLoginBoxBody p.user, p.pass { float: left; margin: 0; margin-left: 10px; padding: 0; font-size: 12px; text-align: right; } Hi, Here's my problem: css Code: Original - css Code <div style="width:69%; text-align:center; float:left;"> <div style="width:80%; min-height: 98px; border: black thin solid;"> BLEH </div> </div> <div style="width:30%; text-align:center; float:right;"> RIGHT </div> <div style="width:69%; text-align:center; float:left;"> The above code, should in theory make two "cells", one on the left and one on the right, side by side. Within the left one there should be another box, aligned centrally. This is fine in internet explorer, yet in Firefox & similar browsers it refuses to do this - I'm sure this is something very simple. Many thanks, Alan I'm having a problem with a float property placing a nested div outside of a parent box. I've ran validation on both the XHTML/CSS. Both are coming up with no errors. Heres the DIV snippet: Code: <!-- Div snippet --> <!-- start main --> <div id="main"> <div class="mainbx"> <!-- top border --> <!-- top left --> <div class="tl"> <div class="c"></div> </div> <!-- top center --> <div class="tc"> <div class="c"></div> </div> <!-- top right --> <div class="tr"> <div class="c"></div> </div> <!-- top border --> <!-- bdy1 --> <div class="bd"> <!-- content area --> <div id="leftcol"> <pThis column ( leftcol ID ) is correctly placed.</p> </div> <div id="rightcol"> <!-- Rounded corner dialog begins --> <div class="dialog"> <!-- top border --> <!-- top left --> <div class="tl"> <div class="c"></div> </div> <!-- top center --> <div class="tc"> <div class="c"></div> </div> <!-- top right --> <div class="tr"> <div class="c"></div> </div> <!-- top border --> <!-- bdy1 --> <div class="bd"> <div class="c"> <div class="s"> <!-- content area --> <h1>This is an inline dialog.</h1> <!-- content area --> </div> </div> </div> <!-- bdy1 --> <!-- botom border --> <!-- bottom left --> <div class="bl"> <div class="c"></div> </div> <!-- bottom center --> <div class="bc"> <div class="c"></div> </div> <!-- bottom right --> <div class="br"> <div class="c"></div> </div> <!-- botom border --> </div> </div> <!-- content area --> </div> <!-- bdy1 --> <!-- botom border --> <!-- bottom left --> <div class="bl"> <div class="c"></div> </div> <!-- bottom center --> <div class="bc"> <div class="c"></div> </div> <!-- bottom right --> <div class="br"> <div class="c"></div> </div> <!-- botom border --> </div> <!-- end mainbx --> <div id="footer">footer text</div> </div> <!-- end main --> If I place a float property in the left or right col ID, the whole ID is placed outside of the mainbx class. For instance: Code: /* example w float */ #rightcol { float: right; height: auto; width: 500px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 35px; margin-right: 0px; } This is how it looks: http://b.imagehost.org/0176/inc_plcmnt.jpg URL Click to view larger image! Now if I remove the float and add a position property: Code: #rightcol { position:relative; right:-320px; top:-190px; height: auto; width: 500px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 25px; margin-right: 0px; } This is how the rightcol is placed: http://d.imagehost.org/0643/cor_plcmnt.jpg URL Click to view larger image! It seems better, but if the black box is re-sized eventually it will end up outside mainbx class ( the purple box ). This leads me to belive that the problem has something to do with nesting. The weird thing is if I add lots of text to the black dialog box, mainbx re-sizes. Any ideas of how to fix this? Thanks for any help or ideas. Uggghhh, I hate it when seemingly simple things turn out to be very difficult. Ok, so I'm tasked with creating a newsletter and I have an image that I'm floating and there are words around the image. At least there are when you look at it in a browser or any email client other than Office 2007. Office 2007 apparently (just learned this today) now uses the Word engine instead of Internet Explorer. Float (among many, many, MANY other things) is not supported. Is there an equivalent to float? To try and simulate float, I put the images and words in a table and did a reasonable job...when viewed by a browser!!! Honestly, I try to be OS agnostic and just use these things as tools to get my job done. But Microsoft has proved time and again that they have no qualms about completely changing the rules and not supporting previous stuff. I mean, we're talking basic html here!!! Ok, rant over. Anybody have any suggestions on how to simulate a float? Thanks in advance. It's hard for me to explain this so bear with me. This is the page in question. The right side is my float. If it is longer than the left side, then it continues, but the white background does not. I've tried doing height: 100% and so forth and can't get it to stretch. I've tried reversing the float assigning it to the left side and it appears fine in Net/Moz, but IE won't run it right. I don't really want to use float but I can't find another way to do it. I'm redoing the site from tables to CSS to make it cleaner. Floating has always been a problem but I've found ways to deal with it. Now, I'm realizing how finicky it is on different browsers. Any suggestions or alternatives to float? The heights of both sides may change at any point so I don't really want to use any position elements. Will I have to? Thanks in advance. Tim Hi, I have faced a strange issue with the CSS overflow property while using nested DIVs.The DIV with class main has the DIV main-1a as its child which in turn has the DIV with class main-1a-child as its child. As the height of main is not fixed, so it is supposed to increase with main-1a and main-1a-child. But in Mozila FireFox, the height of main is not getting increased with the child DIVs. When the overflow property is set to hidden in main, then only the height of main gets increased with its childs. The issue is fine in IE6 regardless of the overflow property. Any help/explanation in this regard will be very helpful. <html> <head> <title>My Page</title> <style type="text/css"> .main { position:relative; width:800px; display:block; border:1px solid #000000; margin:auto; padding:10px 10px 10px 10px; background:#BABB99; height:100%; overflow:hidden; } .main-1a { width:780px; float:left; background:#FFFFFF; border:1px solid #FF0000; padding:10px 10px 10px 10px; } .main-1a-child { width:760px; float:left; border:1px solid #000000; padding:10px 10px 10px 10px; background:#BABB99; } </style> </head> <body> <div class="main"> <div class="main-1a"> <div class="main-1a-child"> <p>text of div1 a2</p> <p>snkjkjsd</p> <p>snkjkjsd</p> <p>snkjkjsd</p> </div> </div> </div> </body> </html> I am modifying an X-Cart implementation that the template originally put the product image in a seperate td. I have modified it to put the image in the same td as the description and used a float style on a div tag. The text is wrapping correctly. The problem is that I have a border-bottom style on the product name and it is ending up under the product image. The image is also covering the bullet on li tags. An example is http://www.adaappliances.com/produc...48&cat=0&page=1. Please do not attempt to order anything! This is not a live site yet. This is a snippet of the code. I am using inline styles for testing. Code: <div style="float:left; padding:5px"> <IMG id="product_thumbnail" src="/image.php?productid=16148" width="168" height="230" alt="Eurotech EDW254E Dishwasher" border="0"></div> <p style="border-bottom: 1px solid black"><font size="3"><strong>Eurotech EDW254E Dishwasher </strong></font></p> I have not found a way to fix this. Any suggestions? This is hard to explain, so a visual aid is he http://dev.dave.imarc.net/examples/css-wants/ I have a page of content divs (grey blocks containing content) extending 100% wide, going down the page. I want to float a block of text to the right, and have it constrain any 'content' div it comes in contact with like this (pushing 1 box) or this (pushing 2 boxes) But all I get is the content div extending accross the page, and only it's content running arround the float like this: http://dev.dave.imarc.net/examples/css-wants/ the two CSS styles are listed in each box. Any ideas?? Thanks... Anyone know of a good way to break up a long word from an element with a certain width? Say I have a word like wordddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd, I'd want it to show up properly. Here's the best I've come up with: Code: <html> <head> <style type="text/css"> div { background-color:#00FFFF; width:150px; overflow: hidden; } </style> </head> <body> <div> Longworddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd </div> </body> </html> As you see, just cutting off the word isn't really ideal. Is there a way to auto-break up long words or something? Hi all, This is really annoying me and I don't think it should happen!! If you see this page, you will see one of the divs spans the whole page and it has gone behine the floated left element. Now if it wnt below it that would be OK as a block level element, but the content is in the right place. If you reduce the width it sits in its place OK. I think this is strange behavior.... is it correct????? http://www.wellandpower.net/website...req=www_contact Regards Charlie Hopefully an easy fix and I'd appreciate any reference links I can bookmark. I have the following site with a navigation bar and content: jimspace.dreamhosters.com/whirligig The content is first in the source with a float: right and the nav bar next in the code with a float: left. In FF the items in the nav bar flow out of the DIV box as they should. When I switch to IE6, the DIV box expands to the size of the longest text causing a float drop. An overflow: hidden solves it, but then of course the nav bar items are cut off. Here's the relevant HTML: Code: <div id="content"> <h2>get whirligigged!</h2> <p>CONTENT</p> </div> <!-- content --> <div id="navcontainer"> <ul id="navlist"> <li class="a"><a href="#">Item one</a></li> <li class="b"><a href="#">Item two</a></li> <li class="c"><a href="#">Item three</a></li> <li class="d"><a href="#">Item four</a></li> <li class="e"><a href="#">Item five</a></li> <li class="f"><a href="#">Item six</a></li> <li class="g"><a href="#">Item seven</a></li> <li class="h"><a href="#">Item eight</a></li> <li class="i"><a href="#">Item nine</a></li> <li class="j"><a href="#">Item ten</a></li> </ul> </div> <!-- navcontainer --> And the relevant CSS: Code: div#content{float: right; margin: 90px 25px 0 0; height: 420px; width: 700px; clear: right; border: 1px solid red; } #navcontainer { float: left; width: 200px; border: 1px solid blue; } How can I get this to behave in IE6? HTML: Code: <div id="title" class="title_lower_color"> <div class="title">TITLE</div> </div> <div id="main"> <div class="grouptitle1">Group 1 <div class="grouptext1">blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah </div> </div> <div class="grouptitle2">Group 2 <div class="grouptext2">blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah </div> </div> </div> CSS: Code: body { margin-top: 10px; margin-right: 10px; margin-left: 10px; } .title { font-family: "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 24px; color: #000000; font-weight: bold; background-color: #CCCCCC; border-color: #000000; border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: thin; width: 100%; float: left; position: relative; } .title_lower_color{ background-color: #666666; border-color: #000000; border-left-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-right-width: thin; border-bottom-width: thin; border-left-width: thin; border-top-style: solid; border-top-width: thin; width: 100%; height: 40px; float: left; position: relative; } .grouptitle1{ color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-family: "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; position: relative; background-color: #CCCCCC; border-color: #000000; border-style: solid; border-width: thin; margin-top: 10px; width: 300px; float: left; } .grouptitle2{ color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-family: "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; position: relative; background-color: #CCCCCC; border-color: #000000; border-style: solid; border-width: thin; margin-top: 10px; margin-left: 10px; float: left; } .grouptext1 { color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-family: "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 12px; font-weight: normal; position: relative; background-color: #FFFFFF; border-color: #000000; border-top-style: solid; border-top-width: thin; width: 300px; } .grouptext2 { color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-family: "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 12px; font-weight: normal; position: relative; background-color: #FFFFFF; border-color: #000000; border-top-style: solid; border-top-width: thin; } I've only just started using CSS rather than tables. The title bit is ok. The problem is the main <div>. In Firefox l can't seem to get the two divs (grouptitle1 & grouptitle2) to float side by side. The only way l can do it is by setting grouptitle2 to a certain width. But l want grouptitle2 to fill the remaining width of the screen whatever size the browser is and not be a set width. Is there any way so that l can make the two divs appear side by side without adding a width to the grouptitle2?? here's a working version: Clicky Here is the relevant HTML code: <table> <tr> <td> <div style="float:left;"> <div class="middle"><div class="r"><div class="l"> <a id="gridtitle" href="javascript:void(0)" onclick="reload()"></a> </div></div></div> <div style="width: 200px;"> <a href="#" onclick="addheader()"><img border="0" src="tab_new_header.png" alt="Delete this grid"/></a> <a href="#" onclick="addfooter()"><img border="0" srctab_new_footer.png" alt="Delete this grid"/></a> </div> </div> <div style="float:right;"> <a href="#" onclick="javascript:toggleLayer('newgrid');"><img border="0" src="button_add.png" alt="Add a grid"/></a> <a href="#" onclick="deleteGrid()"><img border="0" src="button_delete.png" alt="Delete this grid"/></a> </div> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <div id="gridbox3" class="gridbox" width="870px" height="600px" style="background-color:white;"></div> </td> </tr> </table> And the relevant CSS code [which just sets the background of the tab]: .l {background: url(../../datadir/client/images/billinggrid/name_sidebg1.png) 0 0 no-repeat; height: 43px;} .r {background: url(../../datadir/client/images/billinggrid/name_sidebg2.png) 100% 0 no-repeat; height: 43px;} .middle {background: url(../../datadir/client/images/billinggrid/name_sidebg.png); height: 43px;} This is the output (i can't post images?) http://i34 [.] tinypic [.] com/4hpqag [.] png The first problem I am having is that the div my gridtitle (CIBC) is in does not set its width automatically to the text width. Instaed, it spans the whole table ... Position-wise, I would like the tab with "CIBC" to be to the far left, the header and footer tabs to be right of "CIBC" but still floating left, and the + and x signs to be floating right, all on the same line. Help? Thanks in advance. Hi guys I'm in little trouble, because I cannot get a little block (div) to be shown always at bottom, no matter the height of my left column I'm making a complete tableless css layout for the first time Look: Here's the skeleton code Code: <!-- Begin Left Column --> <div id="cssleftcolumn"> HERE I LOAD THE LEFT COLUMN MODULES (IT IS A CMS) <div id="imagedownmenu"><font color="white">this little block should go bottom!!</font></div> </div> <!-- End Left Column --> And here the css code Code: #cssleftcolumn { width: 218px; float: left; color: white; } #imagedownmenu { background-image: url(../images/fondo_botleft.jpg); background-position: bottom left; background-repeat: no-repeat; height: 76px; vertical-align: bottom; } I cannot get the little image to aling at bottom, and well, I don't know if this code will be enough for you guys, so I'll be waiting for your help in case you need more info to accomplish this Thanks a lot in advance, This is my code essentially: <div id="bottom"> <div style="float:left">store hours</div> <img src="map"> <div style="float:right">contact info</div> </div> It looks fine in Safari but it messed up in Firefox. I fixed it a bit by adding overflow:auto to the parent item (bottom div), so it actually has the red background and doesn't collapse. I haven't yet uploaded that fix yet as the problem still isn't solved. Now the div is expanding too much because the 3 items aren't being displayed inline. In firefox the image is pushing the first div beneath it. Any solutions please? Hi, I'm trying to redesign my website to be CSS and XHTML compliant. While I've managed it and everything is almost perfect, IE has one very minor glitch. The page is http://hiveworldterra.ibboard.co.uk/HWTv2.html My 3-col design is based on (and modified from) a 3 col layout I found on the net (there is a credit in the CSS of the page).IE displays everything perfectly and even resizes horizontally without a problem, but as soon as you try to resize vertically, the left column will often overlay the center column. Refreshing the page without resizing the window fixes it and resizing the page horizontally fixes it. As per usual, Firefox is perfectly fine, no matter how you resize the page (until you get down to rediculously small, at which point its to be expected!) It doesn't seem to be a width issue, as I've got a 1280x1024 monitor at work and at full width on one monitor or down at 500px wide there are only a handful of vertical sizes where the left column doesn't overlap, but every time it does overlap then if you resize horizontally by a single pixel then it fixes itself. Anyone have any ideas or IE only hacks (preferably neat ones!) to stop this minorly annoying behaviour? From problems I had while modifying the original layout, it almost seems as if IE is losing the float on the left column. Thanks Hi I've got 4 divs that are of the exact same size. I need them to all occupy the same real estate on a page. three of them will always be hidden and only one is visible at a time, this is controled by javascript. My question is what kind of positioning tricks do I have to do in order to make these 4 identical sized divs occupy the same space. I tried relative positioning like this div1{ position:relative; top:0; left:0; height:200px;} div2{ position:relative; top:-200; left:0;height:200px;} div3{ position:relative; top:-400; left:0;height:200px;} div4{ position:relative; top:-600; left:0;height:200px;} This only moved the contents of each div up to the desired location, however, it did not move the actual div itself, so I'm left with the reserved 600px high worth of empty space Please help |
