CSS - Ghost Space Problem: Relative Positioning Text Over An Image Inside Table
Hi, I have centered a table horizontally and vertically. To do this I put a table inside a table.
so i don't want to use absolute positioning, as the position would change if the window size changes... My problem, with relative positioning, is that I can't figure out how to put my "some text" over an image -which is inside the table cell- in the exact position i want, without "collateral damage"... The collateral damage is that if I put the <div> tag inside the table (see example 1), it will occupy the space and as result the image wll be moved down and layout won't be centered vertically anymore... If I put the <div> tag outside the table (see example 2), as result there will be more occupied space at the top, and the layout isn't centered anymore... Here you can see the code i used for both example 1 and example 2: example 1: <html> <head> <title>relative problem - example 1</title> </head> <body> <table width="100%" height=100% border="1"> <tr> <td width="100%" height="100%" align="center" valign="middle"> <table border=1> <tr> <td width="640" height="480"> <div id="Layer1" style="position:relative; left:50px; top:50px; width:50px; height:200px; text-align:left; overflow: auto; z-index:1;"> some text some text some text some text some text some text some text some text some text some text some text some text </div> <img src="http://www.pbworks.net/images/help.jpg" width="640" height="480"> </td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table> </body> </html> example 2: <html> <head> <title>relative problem - example 2</title> </head> <body> <table width="100%" height=100% border="1"> <tr> <td width="100%" height="100%" align="center" valign="middle"> <div id="Layer1" style="position:relative; left:0px; top:200px; width:50px; height:200px; text-align:left; overflow: auto; z-index:1;"> some text some text some text some text some text some text some text some text some text some text some text some text </div> <table border=1> <tr> <td width="640" height="480"> <img src="http://www.pbworks.net/images/help.jpg" width="640" height="480"> </td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table> </body> </html> thx for letting me know... Similar TutorialsHi All- For some reason when I use a bunch of DIV tags to position elements on my page, the page keeps getting longer and longer with white space. Does anyone know what will remedy this extra whitespace? Thanks, infinity003 Why does GOOD VERSION, below, work perfectly, but the BAD VERSION fails (all browsers)? The only difference is the order of TOPIMAGE and BOTTOMIMAGE in the 2nd IMAGEBUTTON. How can I adjust my CSS so both versions work? GOOD VERSION Code: <style> a.IMAGEBUTTON img.TOPIMAGE { z-index:1; position:absolute; } a.IMAGEBUTTON:hover img.TOPIMAGE { filter:alpha(opacity=0); -moz-opacity:0.0; -khtml-opacity: 0.0; opacity: 0.0; } a.IMAGEBUTTON img {width:150px; } </style> <a class="IMAGEBUTTON" href="http://google.com" > <img class="TOPIMAGE" src="pics\pic2.jpg" /> <img class="BOTTOMIMAGE" src="pics\pic1.png" /> </a> <a class="IMAGEBUTTON" href="http://google.com" > <img class="TOPIMAGE" src="pics\pic2.jpg" /> <img class="BOTTOMIMAGE" src="pics\pic1.png" /> </a> BAD VERSION Code: <style> a.IMAGEBUTTON img.TOPIMAGE { z-index:1; position:absolute; } a.IMAGEBUTTON:hover img.TOPIMAGE { filter:alpha(opacity=0); -moz-opacity:0.0; -khtml-opacity: 0.0; opacity: 0.0; } a.IMAGEBUTTON img {width:150px; } </style> <a class="IMAGEBUTTON" href="http://google.com" > <img class="TOPIMAGE" src="pics\pic2.jpg" /> <img class="BOTTOMIMAGE" src="pics\pic1.png" /> </a> <a class="IMAGEBUTTON" href="http://google.com" > <img class="BOTTOMIMAGE" src="pics\pic1.png" /> <img class="TOPIMAGE" src="pics\pic2.jpg" /> </a> THANKS I want to set up a table so that error messages appear directly above specific table columns in the form of a div tag with a red background and the same width as the column. To do this I've added a div tag inside the <th> element of the table, with the display property set to 'none'. Code: <th> <nobr>Header Content</nobr> <div id="error_message">Error Message</div> </th> When I want to display an error message above the table I use the following styles on the div tag Code: background-color: #ffcccc; width: 100%; position: relative; left: 0px; top: -100px; z-index: 1; display: block; It displays the div tag above the header like I want, but it still stretches the height of the <th> element as if it was still contained inside of it. How do I do this without stretching the cell height? I have a dynamic table that is in the cell of another table. For the life of me I cant get it to stick to the top of the cell. It wants to sit at the midline of it vertically. Thanks for reading. Hello, I am very new to CSS, having only used stylesheets for basic formatting of text, etc. I have created a site where the layout is based on tables (I know ... when I have spare time, I will start learning CSS for this). I have a main table with 1 row and 1 column, height 95%, width 100%. Within this I have a table with a fixed layout (set height, width) for the table elements. This table is centre and middle aligned. Unfortunately the text provided for one of the cells in the table is exceeding the amount expected and the cell height has increased to accommodate for this. I thought of creating a layer and placing it over the cell and inserting the text here and setting the overflow to scroll. However, depending on screen resolution, browser the layer is not always positioned where I want it. Can I somehow position the layer relative to the table cell ? If not, do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this. I do not have the option to rewrite the site using CSS, due to deadlines. Thanks in advance for your help. Bea Hello, I recently started creating websites again and I have been pulling my hair out on this Firefox compatibility issue. The site navigation looks great in IE but in Firefox a couple of the background images are skewed down and to the left. Since all my tricks from years ago are so outdated now, I decided to try CSS for a simplified navigation setup. The code is probably pretty messy since I chopped it together from numerous sources and still am not completely sure how it works. Background: I created a large 794x1200 PNG image that contains two complete border and navigation sets. I am using CSS to both position the appropriate portion in each table/cell as well as switching to a slice on the 2nd image set for rollover purposes. An example of the current test is he (URL address blocked: See forum rules) *not sure if this is okay but would be best to see the example. If it is not allowed as a non-clickable then feel free to delete. It is here - classtime . org / test6 . htm and the navigation image is he (URL address blocked: See forum rules) *classtime . org / navigate . png I would be eternally grateful to anyone that can help me figure out why the site works great in IE but is coming up skewed in Firefox. As a side note, when I pull up the site in Frontpage, it shows the left-most cell as being larger than it is supposed to be even though it is hardcoded. To get my left image bar to show up in the correct place I had to use a value of "left: -40px;" I'm not sure why that is but I suspect it has something to do with the problem. Thank you very much for taking a look. My jumbled code is as follows: Code: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "(URL address blocked: See forum rules)"> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-us"> <title>Ultrasonic Blind Company - Elk Grove Village, Illinois</title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252"> <style type="text/css" media="screen"> a:link {color: #FFF4D1;} a:visited {color: #FFF4D1;} a:hover {color: #74060c;} a:active {color: #FFF4D1;} .top a { display: block; width: 794px; height: 120px; background-image: url('navigate.png'); } .top a:hover { background-position: 0px -601px; } #left { left: -40px; width: 150px; height: 460px; display: block; background: url('navigate.png'); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: 0px -120px; position: relative; } #left li {margin: 0px; padding: 0px; list-style: none; position: absolute; text-align: center; font: bold 18px Batang; line-height: 50px; } #left li, #left a {height: 50px; width: 146px; display: block;} #panel1b {top: 10px;} #panel2b {top: 63px;} #panel3b {top: 116px;} #panel4b {top: 169px;} #panel5b {top: 223px;} #panel1b a:hover {background: transparent url('navigate.png') 0px -730px no-repeat} #panel2b a:hover {background: transparent url('navigate.png') 0px -785px no-repeat} #panel3b a:hover {background: transparent url('navigate.png') 0px -839px no-repeat} #panel4b a:hover {background: transparent url('navigate.png') 0px -890px no-repeat} #panel5b a:hover {background: transparent url('navigate.png') 0px -945px no-repeat} #right { width: 154px; height: 460px; display: block; background: url('navigate.png'); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: -640px -120px; position: relative; } #right li {margin: 0px; padding: 0px; list-style: none; position: absolute; text-align: right; font: bold 18px Batang; } #right li, #right a {height: 85px; width: 154px; display: block;} #panel1r {top: 0px;} #panel2r {top: 100px;} #panel3r {top: 200px;} #panel4r {top: 300px;} #panel1r a:hover {background: transparent url('navigate.png') -640px -721px no-repeat} #panel2r a:hover {background: transparent url('navigate.png') -640px -821px no-repeat} #panel3r a:hover {background: transparent url('navigate.png') -640px -921px no-repeat} #panel4r a:hover {background: transparent url('navigate.png') -640px -1021px no-repeat} </style> </head> <body bgcolor=#74060c> <div align=center> <table id="Table_01" width=794px height=600px border=0 cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0> <tr> <td colspan="3" height="120" width="794" bgcolor="#FFF4D1"> <div class="top"> <a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)"></a> </div> </td> </tr> <tr> <td align=left valign=top height=674px width=150px bgcolor="#FFF4D1"> <ul id="left"> <li id="panel1b"><a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)" style="text-decoration: none">Contact</a></li> <li id="panel2b"><a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)" style="text-decoration: none">Residential</a></li> <li id="panel3b"><a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)" style="text-decoration: none">Commercial</a></li> <li id="panel4b"><a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)" style="text-decoration: none">Coupons</a></li> <li id="panel5b"><a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)" style="text-decoration: none">Questions</a></li> </ul> </td> <td align=left valign=top width=490px height=674px bgcolor="#FFF4D1"> aaa</td> <td align=left valign=top width=154px height=674px bgcolor="#FFF4D1"> <p align=right> <ul id="right"> <li id="panel1r"><a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)" style="text-decoration: none"></a></li> <li id="panel2r"><a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)" style="text-decoration: none"></a></li> <li id="panel3r"><a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)" style="text-decoration: none"></a></li> <li id="panel4r"><a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)" style="text-decoration: none"></a></li> </ul> </td> </tr> </table> </div> </body> </html> Hello, I've almost got this css image gallery done for my website, but I can't seem to get the main image to be positioned where the gallery thumbnails are. I have set this up to use relative positioning with the menu using the horizontal format. The code in my html file is: Quote: <div id="MenuPos" style="position:relative; width:750px; height:20px;"><img src="images/redspacer.gif" width="750" height="20" alt=""></div> This all lines up and works correctly using IE6. I have a problem when using firefox. If I set var MenuCentered='center' in the script file the menu is misaligned by about 10 - 20 pixels to the left on a page when there is a scroll bar on the side of the firefox browser. It works ok on short pages that do not have a scroll bar. If I set var MenuCentered='left' in the script file the problem is reversed in regard to the scrollbar. Have I overlooked anything? Is there anything I can do to correct this using CSS? Hi guys, I've been struggling with this for some hours now and can't get this to work... I'm no css expert but this is driving me mad... The problem happens in firefox3, in IE7 it displays fine. My code is (copied from firebug): <div id="mydiv" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; position: absolute; z-index: 1; opacity: 0.9; left: 763px; top: 143px;"> <div style="border: 1px solid rgb(68, 68, 68); padding: 2px; font-size: 7pt; color: rgb(68, 68, 68); white-space: nowrap; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" id="otherdiv"> Text goes here </div> <div style="position: relative; top: -1px;" id="yetanotherdiv"> <img src="images/bico_w.png" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; width: 14px; height: 7px;"/> </div> </div> This is a balloon like tooltip, with a div on top with the text, and a div on the bottom containing the handle image, all wrapped by another nice div. In Firefox, there's space on top and below the image that I can't figure out where it comes from (no space in IE7). If I put a "vertical-align:top" on the image, it sticks to the top div correctly (both IE and firefox), but then I can't get rid of space BELOW the image. Can you help me figure this out? I'm trying to vertically align two divs inside a table cell. I have the cell's vertical-align property set to text-top because I want the first div to be aligned at the top of the td but I can't, no matter what I try, get the second div to align to the bottom. Is there a better way to accomplish this without nesting tables or is this the right way and I'm just missing something? There is some text appearing below the footer (see red background colored area) in my layout in IE6 and I don't know why. Can someone please take a look at: http://rikahs.com/dermody/test.htm in IE6? Here is a screenshot of the text: Thank you. Take a look at Forgot your password link is ghosted. Some research indicated this might be the ghost text bug caused by <!-- comments --> but I have removed all comments from the page except for one for ie conditionals. The page is at http://sportshook.com/ . View it on IE7. If you have experience with this bug please help me. Thank you!!! Aen OK here is my setup. I have a 3rd party search on my page, the script produces results and the only edit I have access to is the css...(and the actual script ) not the <div> layout of the results page. The script generates a block and then an alt block for the search results with an image floating beside the text (if there is one available) My first problem was the amount of output text varies but does have a maximum.....I have fixed this by specifying the height of the result block to contain it. My real problem is the sizes of my thumbnail images vary and this allows my text to flow all around it if the image height doesn't fill the area as you can see in my screenshot. edit: apparently I can't post images but here is a link to the image http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/schmooot/various%20posted/sample.gif here is my css pertaining to the section Code: .result_image { float: left; display: block; } .result_image img { margin-top: 5px; border: 1px solid #EF3013; max-height: 75px; max-width: 75px; } .result_block { margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; background: #BBBBBB; border: 1px solid #000000; height: 100px;} .result_altblock { margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; background: #DDDDDD; border: 1px solid #000000; height: 100px;} I would like the text to stay 80px from the left of the box always.....regardless of what size the image is. I attempted to force it by specifying the image width to be 75px and it did work but then it force resized my images to fit and some of them need to retain the aspect. I made them retain their aspect ratio by using the max-width and max-height attributes but now some images don't have the height to fill the space So really how do I make the 'block' containing the image to always be the same height of the text beside it (or just to always be 100px)...or force the text 'block' to stay with an 80px left margin. The image is within the text block as you can see in the output source below so I can't just add a margin to the block...also I cannot edit the actual <div> output as I do not have access to the place it is defined... but here it is for reference Code: <div class="result_altblock"><div class="result_image"><a href="item link"><img src="image" alt="" class="result_image" /></a></div><div class="result_title"><b>4.</b> <a href="link">Title</a></div> <div class="description">Description</div> <div class="infoline"></div> </div> <div class="result_block"><div class="result_image"><a href="item link"><img src="image" alt="" class="result_image" /></a></div><div class="result_title"><b>4.</b> <a href="link">Title</a></div> <div class="description">Description</div> <div class="infoline"></div> </div> I am desperate. Normally, absolute positioning requires its parent or ancestor position to be set, but when used with the table display, it doesn't work normally on Firefox--but it does on other browsers. Can someone help me with a workaround that does not involve altering the HTML? If I must, I will accept a workaround that requires changing the HTML, but I'll have to do some heavy duty recoding of Magento's core menu generation. Anyone that knows Magento knows I want to avoid that like the plague--my example is a very simplified version of the problem. I'm using a relative-positioned div as a container for an image, which is absolute-positioned. I'm doing this so that the image will automatically scale down to fit inside the containing div (nothing else I've tried has done this for me- so if there is another way to achieve this, please fill me in). This part works fine, but the image isn't as wide as the containing div, so I would like to center the image inside the div- but I can't seem to get it to work. I tried the obvious text-align:center in the div. That actually worked... kinda. The image's left-side was in the center of the div, but obviously isn't the 'centering' that I'm looking for. I then tried setting margin-left and margin-right on the image to auto, and that did nothing. I suspect that the fact that I have my image absolute-positioned is the culprit here, but I don't know how to get around it- or IF I can get around it without drastically changing my approach. Admittedly, the container div resides inside a table cell. I know that isn't the best practice, but I spent so much time trying a div-only approach only to waste time and become frustrated that I went back to what I know works- at least for now. I tried removing the container div from the table and inserting the image directly to the table cell- but encountered more issues with the sizing of the image. Essentially, my code is something like this: CSS: Code: td#CONTENTDISPLAY { width: 100%; height: 100%; text-align: left; vertical-align: top; padding: 0 0 0 0; margin: 0 0 0 0; } div#CONTENTBANNER { position: relative; height: 100%; padding: 0 0 0 0; } img.CONTENTIMG { position: absolute; height: 100%; } HTML: Code: ... <td id="CONTENTDISPLAY"> <div id="CONTENTBANNER"> <img class="CONTENTIMG" /> </div> </td> ... Nothing flashy, I know. One thing I should mention, however, is that the image is ALWAYS placed inside the container div using a Javascript function (it's a dynamic image). I doubt that makes a difference, but I figure it's worth mentioning. Can anyone help point me in the right direction? Thanks! - skubik I am using a Body{...} style on my page (background set to black #000000) and DIV's inside Tables inside DIV's and when I set up and use a .14 (14px size and white color font syle class) my text stays black! The only thing that works is "inline styles". Not good for site wide-control. There is obviously a conflict here or something is superceding my classes. I prefer to use CSS for font control. I am using div's because of a "jquery slider" and tables because I usually design the look in photoshop and then use slices... not doing that on this site, but it's just what I'm used to. Thanks for any help. single page site is here "petermarsphotography dot com" Hi, I need some help for aligning text inside a css box. let me first say, that i am using a wysiwyg editor and i am aware of this being a red flag for some folks .... to make my problem better understandable, please see following picture - this is how i want it to be: the area of interest is a 3 column box (left and right are fixed widths, middle column is variable), the middle box (highlighted in blue) is the box, which has a background picture ('Melanie Wanders') on the top/left .... then it has some text (one looong line) and also a picture to the right (alignment: right). what i wanted is, that when the user resizes the window, that the text is able to wrap around the image on the top right - and it does exactly that (you can also view the online version here) well, what happens is this: my problem: when i try to use the 'p' tags to enter a paragraph, it messes up the appearance in FF (completely) and it still shows the text right on the top, above the background image. I also tried to align the text line to the bottom of the box, but it wouldn't do so. i did also try to have the image ('Melanie Wanders') as an actual image aligned Top/Left, but it wouldn't wanna work for me with the other image next to it. i might get it to work, if this is my only option .... finally, here the code used (you will also find the code online, if you follow the above link) Code: .inner_middle_content_row { width: 100%; height:300px ; } .inner_middle_content_row_left { background-image: url(images/inner_table/left.png); background-repeat: repeat-y; background-position: right 0; width:125px; height:300px; float:left; } .inner_middle_content_row_right { background-image: url(images/inner_table/right.png); background-repeat: repeat-y; width:20px; height:300px; float:right; } .inner_middle_content_row_middle { background-color: white; background-image: url(images/about_us/melanie_title.jpg); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: left top; width:auto; height:300px; margin-left:125px; margin-right:20px; } Code: <div class="inner_middle_content_row"> <!--agl:cssobject id="inner_middle_content_row" type="Column Middle Scale" /--> <div class="inner_middle_content_row_left"> <p class="submenu_brown">Melanie Wanders</p> <p><a class="submenu_gray" href="wilhelm%20wanders.html" onmouseover="this.className='submenu_brown';return true;" onmouseout="this.className='submenu_gray'">Wilhelm Wanders</a></p> <p><a class="submenu_gray" href="philosophie.html" onmouseover="this.className='submenu_brown';return true;" onmouseout="this.className='submenu_gray'">Philosophie</a></p> <p><a class="submenu_gray" href="history.html" onmouseover="this.className='submenu_brown';return true;" onmouseout="this.className='submenu_gray'">History</a></p> </div> <div class="inner_middle_content_row_right"></div> <div class="inner_middle_content_row_middle"> <img src="images/about_us/melanie_portrait.jpg" alt="" width="160" height="180" align="right" border="0" />Chef Melanie Wanders received her Culinary Arts and Management degree .... their own hand-made chocolate company - Wanders Artisan Chocolaterie.</div> it would be great to find a solution to this - the easy way out would be to just skip the background image and have the text start right on top left .... but i like the idea of having a nice title like this - please tell me your opinion though another thing i realize is, that the whole alignment is off in IE ... this is an issue i think i have read before and it has to do with this 3px or 5px off thing in IE right? i think i will look into this some other time. Thanx for reading this - please bare with me, as my mother-language is not english and i might have expressed myself not clearly hey all, i'm trying to figure out how to position text in an h1 tag that uses a background image, without adding extra markup. i just need it 15px from the left of the image, and 10px from the top. here's the css for the h1 tag: Code: h1 { height:50px; width:100%; background:white url(images/h1_background.gif) no-repeat left; margin-top:12px; color:white; font-size:11pt; } and the html is just; Code: <h1>welcome</h1> thanks! Hi Guys, Ive not been doing the CSS stuff too long as I used to use tables all the time for this stuff. Im ultimately trying to get 3 news articles for eg on a homepage with a mini image to the left of the text which wraps around it. The text sometimes is not going to be the size of the image so the next article needs to drop to the next line underneath. It isnt though and its listing in a diagonal line instead. Any one got any tips. Code: <div id="m1"> <div class="nw1"> <h2><a href="/">Money test title</a></h2> <p><img src="/includes/img/archive/100x77-0000000001.jpg" width="100" height="77" class="img1" />Latest shinanigans on the money savings scene today are... just gonna pack this out to see if the image does eventually fit in at all which would be nice because it should work! But who knows eh? :D Its just an interesting topic to look into la de dah de dah!</p><br /> </div> <div class="nw1"> <h2><a href="/">Money test title</a></h2> <p>Latest shinanigans on the money savings scene today are...<img src="/includes/img/archive/100x77-0000000001.jpg" width="100" height="77" class="img1" /></p><br /> </div> <div class="nw1"> <h2><a href="/">Money test title</a></h2> <p>Latest shinanigans on the money savings scene today are...<img src="/includes/img/archive/100x77-0000000001.jpg" width="100" height="77" class="img1" /></p><br /> </div> </div> Ive tried a few things like putting div's around each specific article see if i could somehow force it to a new line but it isnt working. The img tags ive moved about. Im using float left on them. Any one any suggestions? Im really stumped and close to hitting the monitor If it helps I could pm the url to you if you think u can help. Thanks guys. Im hoping this is a relatively easy problem as most sites layout like this just I can't get it to do it! hehe! |
