CSS - Page Looks Different In Every Browser
The link below looks perfect in ie8. However the div for #maincontent and the div for #footer do not align correctly in >ie8, FF or Chrome. All edges should be touching with no gray background showing through. As I'm sure you can tell, I started with a Dreamweaver template, could the code or comments the application adds could be causing the problem.
ht tp://w ww.wildsheep.org/jhg/footer/new/ Thanks in advance!! -yankinmyhairout Similar TutorialsHi guys, I've been working on my CSS for a short while now. I'm attempting to get a "layout" for my site that I can work with, and I thought that a table-less layout was the way to go. I had a few problems initially with CSS and posted some code on here, and was lucky enough to get the help of an expert. He pointed out that I needed Doctypes, character sets and so on and helped me get started. I spent a "bit" of time at work doing a bit more to the page and was really pleased with the result - see attachment. I know it is currently quite crude (and the colours are appauling!) but it's practice. I then took my work home and opened it on my computer, and it has fallen apart AGAIN. I cannot believe that it can look so different in the SAME browser on different computers. At home I am using IE 6.0.2900... on WinXP SP2 At work I am using IE 5.50 on Windows 2000 SP4 I am getting so frustrated that everything in CSS seems to involve having little "extra bits" here and there to make work in each browser (or the same browser, different versions!), when the whole idea was to reduce coding and make life easier. I know that I have not posted any code, which could make helping me out difficult....but just by looking at the images below, does it look like I need a simple "hack" (whatever they are!) - ChiefWigs spoke about using an <! IF IE... comment to help out. Or should I look at just reducing everything by a pixel or two to make it fit...and just accept that gaps will be slightly larger on other browsers? It might be worth noting that I am using absolute dimensions (px) for the panels and menu holders...but relative widths (em) for things like the hyperlink boxes... I'm getting really depressed about the whole CSS thing, its already putting me off continuing to learn . If anyone could offer me help I would be very grateful. Regards, Porky I have made a style sheet and an html homepage. I want everything to expand with the browser and I want the <div> tags . 1) How can you center the css style sheet. Like I have the background, then I have <div> tags that display the header, content areas and footer. I want the header content areas and footer centered in the browser and also to expand with the browser if it is made smaller or larger. If you need the code let me know. I have my site centred in the browser window, yet if you resize the window (as if emulating 800 x 600 or smaller) then the scroll bar appears on the right as it should. But the web page has the top section cut off and is not accessible, is this my code? or is this because of the size of the web site? The page can be viewed he http://www.spanishguitar.co.uk If you make your height of your browser window smaller, you will see that the top of the site gets cut off. How can I fix this? My css for this is: Code: #PageDiv { position:absolute; left: 50%; top: 50%; width: 770px; height: 600px; margin-top: -300px; /* half of the height */ margin-left: -385px; /* half of the width */ border: 1px solid #000; } Hi, Here's the site I'm working with: http://www.cjfusion.com I want to get that image centered on the browser window and then depending on how big the viewers screen is, the browser will cover up the left and the right. I hope that makes sense. I almost want it to be fluid, but I'm unsure how to do that. Ask questions if this doesnt make sense. Its hard to explain. -CJ Hello, I have my XHTML code in CSS to insert an image at the top like this: Code: <div id="award"> <img src="images/award.gif" alt="Year Award" /> </div> #award { position: absolute; top: 30px; left: 400px; z-index: 99; } When I resize my browser this image just changes its position and moves across the page. And all my content is set to auto margin on left and right. How do I make it fix into a position and wont change during resizing or the browser? Link to site If you view the page in FF, the main page (General Information) doesnt extend all the way to the bottom of the browser. I think it's lacking text, because if you visit the other pages, it works fine. This works regardless under IE. I'm stumped! Hello, I'm new to CSS. I've been developing a website in PHP. I have a report that is meant to be printed. It is formated for printing. However, if the user doesn't have his/her browser print page margins set to a max of 0.25in then some of the printed area will get clipped off. Can CSS be used to control these margins on the page? I've been looking into this and have been lead to the media = "print" area. However, it only seems to be controling the webpage's body margins and not the browser's print page setup margins. I've gotten to the point of using the following style code on my page, but now I'm at a loss as to what to try next. Code: <style type="text/css"> <!-- .style1 { font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; } body,td,th { font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; } body { margin-left: 15px; margin-top: 15px; margin-right: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px; } .style4 { font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt; font-weight: bold; } .style15 {font-size: 10pt} .style21 {font-size: 18pt} .style24 {font-size: 24pt} .style25 {font-size: 16pt} .style28 {font-size: 12pt} --> </style> <link href="file:///C|/Webs/ures/k058_styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"> <style type="text/css" media="print"> <!-- .style19 {font-size: 14pt} .style29 {font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; } .style22 {font-size: 9pt} .style23 {font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman", Times, serif;} .styleprint { margin: 0in 0in 0in 0in; margin-top: 0in; margin-left: 0in; } --> </style> I added the ".styleprint" style to the page only to try and control the browser's print page setup margins. What you see above are actually two attempts to do this. Like I said above the margin settings seem to only be contoling the margins on the displayed page and not the browser's print page setup margins. How can I control the browser's print page setup margins? CAN I control the browser's print page setup margins? If I cannot, what do you do to make sure that the user can print a "printer formated" page with the correct margins? Thanks, Paul Bear with me please. I am brand new to html/CSS etc... I just cobbled together a page a few days ago using someone elses code as a reference, I hardly know what I did or how it works, but it works just like I want it to - Background centered and stationary (no scrolling with content), but the content does scroll, with NO horizontal scroll bar. You can view it he bit(dot)ly/rbsZsH - THIS IS WHAT I WANT MY OTHER PAGE TO DO Ok, so feeling smug, I tried to do another one like it, without the sidebar/header, etc... For the most part it works, EXCEPT - I have an unexpected horizontal scroll bar that goes about 50% across the browser and allows the user to pull the content off-center across the background. I have nearly pulled my hair out trying to fix it and put a hidden message under the content just for fun.. (make lemonade when you get lemons, right?) You can view second page he bit(dot)ly/qMbYl2 - THIS IS THE GOOFY PAGE The only real clue I have is that the first page is set to 780px wide and has this comment in the container div: /* using 20px less than a full 800px width allows for browser chrome and avoids a horizontal scroll bar */ My second page container div is set to 802px because I am using an image from Photoshop rather than a background color. Thank you if any of you can shed light on the situation. P.S. - I'm sure I've totally butchered the code, and you can assume when you answer that I can cut and paste but not really understand what you are saying. I've tried to insert a horizontal drop down CSS menu in my layout. However, the menu bar displays about 10 pixels lower in Firefox than it does in IE. <a href="(URL address blocked: See forum rules)">Link</a> I checked the margins, padding but can not seem to find a way to get the menu to display at the same position in both browsers. Any guidance is very appreciated. thanks. My first post.... ok... First I would like to say THANK YOU to anyone who has time to bestow some knowledge to me on what I am sure is a highly noob-esqe situation. I would also like to say that I have thoroughly search this and other forums for my issue, unfortunately I dont think I understand CSS or any web design enough to comprehend the solutions given. I think this may require someone with the knowledge I lack to come down to my level... if you can bend that low.. and walk me thru layman term-style. Again thanks in advance for anytime spent helping out. That being said I was recently trying to jazz up my website that is hosted by a certain music community. I do a decent amount of business thru this site so I wanted to step up the interface a little and get away from using the standard page setup they give you. They do offer the option to edit CSS to construct your own for a little more customization. I jumped in, and after a few days of struggling, I got it looking how I wanted it. I was excited until I realized it looked different on almost every computer i visited the site on. My Background is fine, but the links to paypal and other content is all over the place(e.g. song player, twitter link, buttons) I have tweaked and tweaked, but have not been able to remedy this apparently common problem due to my lack of knowledge and experience. My only hope is to post the coding here and have a Smart Guy/Girl guide me in the right direction. I hope Im not asking too much guys... here goes (I know I can post my url here, how can I redirect you guys to veiw my site??) /********* SoundClick CSS Template (based on custom version Mon, Sep 28 2009) ***********/ Quote: /* general */ body {background: url((MyBGJPEGforbackground)); margin:0px;} body, div,tr,td,select, textarea, input, option {font-family:Verdana; font-size:11px;} a, a:link, a:visited {color:white; text-decoration:none;} a:hover {color:#ff0000; text-decoration:underline;} .pageFooter {clear:both; color:gray; padding:1px 0px 50px 20px;} .infoBox {width:650px; margin:50px auto; background:white; color:black; border:silver solid 1px; padding:30px; font-size:14px;} /* hardly used, its for error messages to user */ .infoBox .quotes {margin:20px; border:#4b4b4b dashed 1px; font-style:italic; padding:10px; background:;} /* main containers */ .mainTable {background: url((MainTableBGPicWentHere)) ; color:#999999; width:750px; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; text-align:center;} .mainContent {background:url(/images/siteNav/transbgblocks/black/bg_0.png); color:#999999; width:725px; float:left; overflow:hidden; margin:0px 0px 20px 5px;} /* IE6 doesnt support our preferred overflow:visible */ /* left navigation */ .navigation {background:url(/images/siteNav/transbgblocks/black/bg_0.png); color:white; width:300px; float:left; overflow:hidden; margin:10px 0px 20px 0px;} .navigation a:link, .navigation a:visited {color:#999999;} .navigation a:hover {color:#ffffff;} .navigationDivider {height:6px; line-height:6px; border-bottom:#232323 dashed 1px; margin-bottom:6px;} /* general elements */ .headline {background:transparent; color:transparent; font-weight:bold; border-bottom:transparent dashed 0px; border-top:transparent solid 0px; padding:330px 1px 50px 50px;} .headlineBig {font-size:22px; font-weight:normal;} .headlineSuppl {float:right; margin:0px 0px 0px 100px; color:#666666; font-size:11px; font-weight:normal;} /* for text/links on the right side of main headline (e.g. song count on main page) */ .headlineSuppl a:link, .headlineSuppl a:visited {color:#666666; text-decoration:none;} .headlineSuppl a:hover {color:black; text-decoration:underline;} .pageturner {background:; color:#cccccc; border:#4b4b4b solid 1px; text-align:right; padding:10px; font-size:13px; font-weight:normal;} /* pages menu (previous, next..), e.g. on music page, message board */ .pageturner .nonactive {color:#666666;} .pageturner a:link, .pageturner a:visited {color:#cccccc; text-decoration:none;} .pageturner a:hover {color:#ff0000; text-decoration:underline;} .listedPicsBox {border:#4b4b4b solid 1px; width:114px; height:160px; overflow:hidden; padding:2px 1px 4px 1px; margin:0px 4px 10px 4px; float:left; font-size:11px; text-align:center;} .listedPics {width:110px; height:125px; background-position: center center; background-repeat: no-repeat; margin:2px 0px 4px 0px; overflow:hidden} .breaker {height:1px; line-height:1px; clear:both} /* general color and font assets */ .color_supplemental {color:#666666;} /* used e.g. for song pages comments count */ .alternateBG0 {background:none;} /* used as background colors for comments */ .alternateBG1 {background:none;} /* alternate color */ /* main page (the default entry page) */ .mainContent .contHeadline {clear:left; font-size:16px; color:#cccccc; padding:1px 0px 2px 20px;} /* interview questions */ .mainContent .contText {clear:left; padding-left:15px;} .mainContent .contInterview {clear:left; padding-left:30px;} .mainContent .newsBox {clear:both; background:transparent; color:white; border:transparent solid 0px; margin:6px 20px 0px 20px; padding:100px;} /* main page: video box (different from video page) */ .videoBox_mainPage {padding:5px; margin:0px 100px 20px 100px;} .videoBox_mainPage .video {padding:5px; margin-bottom:10px;} .videoBox_mainPage .title {font-size:15px; text-align:center; margin-bottom:3px;} .videoBox_mainPage .shareLinks {float:right; padding:2px; border-bottom:#4b4b4b dashed 1px;} .videoBox_mainPage .labels {color:#666666; width:100px; padding-right:20px; text-align:right; float:left;} .videoBox_mainPage .info {padding-left:120px;} .videoBox_mainPage a:link, .videoBox_mainPage a:visited {font-size:13px; font-weight:normal; text-decoration:none;} .videoBox_mainPage a:hover {text-decoration:underline;} /* main page: upcoming shows */ .liveshowsBox {background:#cccccc; color:#000000; width:300px; margin:15px 2px 15px 10px; float:right; clear:right;} .liveshowsItems {padding:4px 0px 0px 0px; font-size:11px; clear:both;} .liveshowsBox a:link, .liveshowsBox a:visited {color:#000000; text-decoration:none;} .liveshowsBox a:hover {color:#666666; text-decoration:underline; cursorointer;} /* main page: standard song box on artist page (only this song box or the embedded player is used. This seems to happen in all browsers. We've looked into many css solutions to the issue - but to no avail - we cant make the damn thing disappear. One long winded solution is to change the stylesheet to be built dynamically - so a call to ch10.php=true would build the page differently. But this seems to defeat the purpose of using a print stylesheet in the first place. Another long winded soltuion is to change the (Rather old) menu script - but that not really an option in this case either. So my question is - What happens when a browser prints a page? Does it send anything back to the server indicating it is loading the print stylesheet instead? (eg: Some sort of request variable) Or does the client's browser simple request the CSS file and reformat the page it has already downloaded? If so I could detect this event with PHP or Javascript to not load the offending menus when the print css had been loaded I am generating a list with PHP that is going to be printed out and hung up for display. I would prefer if the following weren't printed. 1) Top Left - Page Title (I know I can have this disappear by having a blank title, but I would prefer to have one) 2) Top Right - Page URL 3) Bottom Left - Page number (ex: 1 of 2) 4) Bottom Right - Date Is there any way to print the list without these? I wasn't sure if there is some css I can use, or if this is something that the printer prints automatically. Thanks Hi guys Please help me out. This webpage should look like this: But in some browsers the photograph (bottom right hand floating DIV with background image) does not load! WHY?! Thanks! I have some css issues between browsers and was wondering if anyone could help. I'm new here so it won't let me post the URL, but here's a description. In safari and firefox I get a small gap between the top of the browser window and the content container, so my background shows on top. In IE it's all flush to the top. I want flush to the top everywhere, with the background only visible along the left and right sides. In IE and safari there's a box around the (clickable) logo, in safari there's not. I don't want the box. I specified no border, but I still get the box. I specified the image midway down the main content area to align left so the text would wrap around it to the right. I see this take effect in dreamweaver's design view, but not live. Hi, I haven't worked with CSS since before the whole Firefox craze and I'm having some compatibility issues when it comes to getting my website to work properly in both IE, Firefox and Safari. I was able to achieve the perfect layout in IE but Firefox and Safari just throw it all out of whack. Are there way to ensure the same output (like linking to W3C or something) or perhaps I'm just doing something wrong. I've posted my code and you can see the difference I'm talking about in both browsers. Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" /> <style type="text/css"> <!-- /* GRID PLACEMENT */ html, body { height:100%; text-align:center; margin:0; padding:0; } div { display:block; } div#holder { width:800px; height:100%; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; } div#links { width:inherit; } div#page { border:2px #4a86b2 solid; width:inherit; height:inherit; padding:1px; } div#page div { width:inherit; } div#header { height:75px; } div#divider { height:20px; } div#content { height:80%; } div.left { height:100%; float:left; width:180px; border:1px white solid; } div.right { height:100%; float:right; width:610px; border:1px white solid; } div#footer { height:20px; border:1px white solid; } /* GRID COLORS */ div#header, div#footer { background:#000066; } div#divider { background:#6392e6; } div#content div.left { background:#a5be00; } --> </style> </head> <body> <div id="holder"> <div id="links">1</div> <div id="page"> <div id="header"> <div class="left">1</div> <div class="right">1</div> </div> <div id="divider"> <div class="left">1</div> <div class="right">1</div> </div> <div id="content"> <div class="left">1</div> <div class="right">1</div> </div> <div id="footer">1</div> </div> </div> </body> </html> Howdy folks, new to the forum and CSS (longtime tablejunkie now finding myself away from the Dark Side) but I have a question about something that is driving me crazy on this latest site and I can't find an answer or hack anywhere that seems to work. The site is: http://www.ipfwcommunicator.org/devindex.php In Moz/NN7/Safari/IE5 Mac everything is just fine. The paddings/floats are right, charspacing works fine. Basically the template is working perfectly. But exclusively in IE6 there is a peculiar change in the drawing of the top/bottom bars and the navigation bar. Basically, an additional few pixels of background color get added below the content. If you compare Firefox to IE6 on windows you'll see it: a few extra px of Dark Blue below the masthead, a few extra px of gray below the nav buttons, and (at the bottom) a few extra px of dark blue both on the left and bottom of the 'A publication of ISPN, Inc.' logo. This not only causes the bottom logo to shift up, but come out of alignment with the right hand vertical bar that runs through the content section. I've tried changing virutally everything to do with padding/margins along the course of the div definitions, naturally. I'm actually starting to think it might be an HTML render issue instead of a CSS issue: that the issue has to do with <img> border rather than CSS problems. The CSS is here Additionally, IE5.1(Mac) is insisting on left-justifying the sidebar boxes within the right-hand vertical content div, where every other browser has them (properly) centered up. Any ideas? Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated. Naturally I'm on crazy deadline and am so swamped with backend stuff that I don't really have a day to go back and forth trying new hacks (not to mention I simply lack the experience, I fear.) Anyone who solves this can have my first born... or at least my undying gratitude Thanks! Im trying to do some CSS frame emulation for a curve on my site so that it follows the screen, but (and this is a surprise, i feel) it only works in IE!! Not in firefox. Im not sure why. Here is the CSS file that holds the frame emulation: Code: @media screen { body { margin: 0; padding: 1em 1em 1em 14em; color: #000; background: #fff; } div.fixedBox { position: fixed; top: 1em; left: 1em; width: 12em; border: 1px solid #000; background: #eee; } div.fixedBox p { margin: 1em; } /* Don't do this at home */ * html { overflow-y: hidden; } * html body { overflow-y: auto; height: 100%; padding: 0 1em 0 14em; font-size: 100%; } * html div.fixedBox { position: absolute; } /* All done. */ } Is there an error here? I got this off here. Not sure what is going wrong, like i said it work in IE, but not firefox, whereas the example on the above site works in both. Any ideas? Hi, I designing a webpage and realized that different browsers such as IE, Opera and FF interpret CSS differently. In order to ensure most of the browsers display the page in the same way, what should I do? Thank you. Hey, I got this simple code. In mozila firefox it looks good but in explorer appears a white area. that's not suppose to be there. please help me fix it! <html> <head> <style type="text/css"> body{ margin:0; padding:0; } div.header{ width:774px; border:1px solid; border-bottom:none; } div.main{ width:774px; border-left:1px solid; border-right:1px solid; } div.footer{ width:774px; border:1px solid; border-top:none; } </style> <title>Untitled Document</title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> </head> <div class="header"><img src="images/bovenbalk3.gif" width="774"></div> <div class="main"></div> <div class="footer"><img src="images/onder.gif" width="774"></div> <body> </body> </html> |
