CSS - Anchor Height Makes Ie Shrink?
I am having a problem with IE. I have an anchor nested inside a list item with display: block applied. Because it is a block-level element (now), I applied a height. In Firefox/Win, it works wonderfully. In IE6/Win, the anchor area shrinks! If I leave it out, Firefox still works, but IE has gaps showing the background color of the body! I am okay with this problem since this page is for a friend, but I would like to know if there is a way to fix this for future reference.

Thanks in advance. Regards, CH... Ok, I have a gradient and i'm using it as the background for a <div> I want the whole background to show. So it's always dark at the bottom and light at the top. I have my image gradient.jpg and I want it to stretch or shrink vertially but repeat horizontally. Heres what I have: Code: <style type="text/css"> <!-- div { width: 50%; height: 50%; background-image: url(background.jpg); } --> </style> Like that it will only display half of the gradient if the gradient is longer than 50% of the page. I want it to stretch or shrink the image so that the whole gradient is displayed. I tried using the background-size: 100% attribute but it diddnt do anything :-\ Thanks for any help. Hi everyone. I recently redesigned my website and while it looks great in firefox, I'm having huge problems in IE 6.0. I have several pages with >50 thumbnails, and whenever these pages load in IE, scrollbars appear to the right and bottom of the div and quickly move by themselves to the upper left hand corner of the screen as the thumbnails load, shrinking the content into a little box of nothing in the upper left hand corner. The link to the site is in my profile, I am not allowed to post a url here since I'm new. The main page of the site is fine, but any of the links at the left will cause the problem because of all the thumbnails. I have been using "Group Photos" as the page to test. I am still a newbie at CSS and got this template for free and have tweaked it a bit. It came with an IE hack ("fix.css") that maybe isn't working properly. This is the IE hack: Code: html {overflow:hidden;} body {height:100%; width:100%; overflow:auto;} Here is the relevant code from my main stylesheet ("eyecandy.css"): Code: #sidebar {position:absolute; top:0; left:0; width:220px; height:100%; overflow:auto; background:#e0e0e0; text-align:right;} body > #sidebar {position:fixed;} #menu a {display:block; width:202px; padding:2px 18px 3px 0; color:#606060; background:#e0e0e0; font-size:1.1em; font-weight:normal; text-decoration:none; letter-spacing:-1px;} #content {width:685px; margin:0 0 0 240px; padding:20px 0; background:#fafafa;} Can anyone help? I hate I can't even post a link to the site directly or even the css file to make it easier. Both the CSS files I named are in the parent directory if you want to see them. Hey everyone, I am doing some stuff to my site, and I noticed that when someone clicks a link, the text shifts sligtly to the left. I thought it would be the active border, but I am not sure. It is a small bug, but it is kind of annoying me. Here is my link code. Code: #main a:link { color: #41619a; padding: 0; } #main a:visited { color: #41619b; } #main a:hover { text-decoration: underline; } #main a:active { border: 0; } Here is one of the pages where it happens. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Hi, i made a page with DIVs and floats and all that and everything is peachy. i got myself an ecommerce solution, re-designed the interior to be tableless and now have a problem with IE that i cannot seem to get rid off. live example: www. chocolateriewanders.com/shop - the 3 floated images leave the div in IE (do not wrap) [thats the smaller problem] - if you click on 'Gift Boxes', then the content is moved down quite a bit opposed to the looks in Firefox, were its all aligned correctly. i tried to apply the holly hack - but i am not very comfortable with it. right now the 'shop' site does not validate and i have no idea why either (html validation) If someone could help me out, that would be great (and yeah i want to succeed in validation too! but this shop is pretty crazy put together and i have no clue about php and whatnot it utilizes .... btw, most pages are put together with php from a database and TPL files, which i can edit) PROBLEM: I create a nice button using the sliding doors technique for rounded corners. But the button displays with 100% width unless I float it. My layout requires that the buttons be inline with the text, so floating won't work. Anyone know an alternative? I wouldn't mind floating but I want the button to show inline with the text. When I use float:left, it removes it from the inline flow. Basically, I want a very modular button that can be used in several different places on a page. In many cases, floating is fine because the mockup has it out of the inline text, but I want to use it there, too. Here's the HTML: <a class="button" href="#"><span>Update Profile</span></a> Here's the css: a.button:link, a.button:visited { background:url(button_right.gif) no-repeat right top; } a.button span:hover, a.button span:active { background:url(button_left_hover.gif) no-repeat right top; } a.button span { background:url(button_left.gif) no-repeat left top; color:#fff; cursorointer; display:block; height:20px; line-height:20px; margin:0 2px 0 0; padding:0 10px; position:relative; white-space:nowrap; } title doesnt really explain it, but i cant really explain it well in 1 line. code I use is at bottom of the post but using the below code. If I take out the border-top declaration in #bodycontainer, it seems to lose the margin-top that is declared in the flashcontainer. when i say lose, the background-color of the bodycontainer no longer exists above the flashcontainer. it seems as the flashcontainer overlays the parent and moves up or whatever, if that makes any sense. this is in Firefox 3.0.3 code validates as transitional (and even strict if i change the doctype) i cannot figure out why either. i've used firebug to see if any CSS was overriding, but it doesnt seem to be any Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en"> <head> <title>Test</title> <style type="text/css"> <!-- body { margin: 0; padding: 0; } #bodycontainer { width: 960px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; background-color: #000; border-top: 1px solid yellow; /* remove this line */ } .flashcontainer { width: 950px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-top: 5px; border-top: 1px solid red; } --> </style> </head> <body> <div id="bodycontainer"> <div class="flashcontainer"> <img src="images/home_flash_area.jpg" width="950" height="240" alt="flash container" title="flash container" /> </div> <h2>Some Title</h2> <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed doamet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do.</p> </div> </body> </html> Hi all, I am trying to automate everything on my test website and I have one more angle to cover. In effect, I want to adjust the line-height property (which I can do) based on the number of files within a specific folder (PHP and already done). The more files in the folder, the lower the line-height value must be. This is to ensure if I copy additional files into the folder, then the navigation menu (which is PHP reading files in this particular folder) will alter the CSS line-height property accordingly to ensure it can never exceed a certain height. Sounds wierd? go to www.re3.org.uk (next to the RE3 image, I have a list of hyperlinks which are obtained from files within the folder) My problem, when adjusting the CSS property (which is set as cm in *.css file) in javascript, it doesn't correspond correctly, the line-height property in javascript doesn't appear to be work in cm but some other measurement. Does anyone know how to change what unit of measurement Javascript works in? Or does anyone know what unit of measurement javascript uses when adjusting line-height / line-width values? I want to create a mini-algorithm that works out the appropriate line-height based on the image height (got that already) and the number of files in the folder (got that too) so the menu automatically adjusts to fit. Whew! I've never done much CSS work, but I know this has to be an easy fix. Each DIV appears to be 10px higher when viewed in IE. I want them to be 8px high and they end up being 18px high. In Firefox, Netscape, and Opera it works fine. Anyone mind correcting this imbarrassing little problem? Why is it doing this?</p> </div> </body> </html> Hello Just recently I had an idea for a page I wanted to make, the design is basically a 3-column layout with no traditional header or footer, the height of all three columns should run the length of the window/page height the left and rightmost column would have a fixed width or a width in em, the center column width should fill the space in between. If the content is short all columns should extend to the height of the page window, but if the content in any of the columns is longer than the window height they should all extend to reach the bottom of the page and accommodate the content length In my first attempt things didn't go so well, results varied wildly across browsers so I decided to start from scratch bit by bit Bellow is the point at which I reach consistent but undesired behaviour, I have validated and tested the code in Firefox 3/Pale Moon, Internet Explorer 8, Chromium 9, and Opera 11 I would like the end result to work in the above browsers as well as IE7 if possible I should point out now that im not interested in using faux-columns, the layout should not require images, I also wish to have absolute-positioned elements in the columns some time later Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <title>Three Columns</title> <style type="text/css"> *, html, body { margin: 0; padding: 0; font-size: 100%; } html, body { width: 100%; height: 100%; } #maincontainer { position: relative; height: 100%; background: #eee; } #left { position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 200px; background: #fbb; height: 100%; } #mid { position: relative; margin: 0 200px 0 200px; background: #efe; height: 100%; } #right { position: absolute; top: 0px; right: 0px; width: 200px; background: #bbf; height: 100%; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="maincontainer"> <div id="left"> left start<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left<br /> left end<br /> </div> <div id="mid"> mid start<br /> mid<br /> mid<br /> mid<br /> mid<br /> mid<br /> mid end<br /> </div> <div id="right"> right start<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right<br /> right end<br /> </div> </div> </body> </html> In the above example it works as long as the content within the columns is shorter than the window height, but if you re-size the window so that the text in the right or left column goes beyond the page, and then scroll to the bottom, the columns do not extend to the bottom of the page so there is a large gap where the content overflows beyond the column What I would like to do from this point is make the columns extend to the bottom of the page when this happens, but I'm not sure how best to proceed I also have a version of the above code which uses floated left and right columns instead of absolute positioned ones, would it be better to work from that? or does it not really matter Thanks in advance It seem that everytime I added the image tag, the div'x area get bigger in IE but not in Mozilla/Firefox browser. So, I thought by added the "margin-bottom:-360px;" to the div would fix it but it had an opposite effect. Meaning it worked in IE but Mozilla show a vertical scrollbar. So, does anyone know how can I make the <img> overlap one another without being stacked on one after another in height for IE if I take out the "margin-bottom: -360px;"? Thanks... I have been having a big problem with my webpage for a long time now and hope I can find an answer to my problem with your help. I want a div that contains the content of my pages (which varies in length depending on the individual page) to stretch the length of my page, but it only stretches the length of the window. Here's the HTML and CSS: HTML (I only included the very basic structure): <html> <body> <div class="container"> <div id="content"> <div id="..."></div> <div id="..."></div> <div id="..."></div> <div id="..."></div> </div> </div> </body> </html>` CSS: html, body { height: 100%; font-family: Arial; font-size: 10px; color: #000000; background: #FFF url(../../images/body.png) no-repeat center 40px; margin: 0; position: relative;} .container { height: 100%; width: 960px; margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; position: relative;} #content { width: 939px; min-height: 100%; position: relative; top: 210px; left: 6px; box-shadow: 0px 0px 8px #666; -moz-box-shadow: 0px 0px 8px #666; -webkit-box-shadow: 0px 0px 8px #666; background-color: #FFF;} I tried to set the content div to overflow: auto, but that includes a scroll bar for the content div that I do not want. It does, however, create the desired effect of the shadow and background of the #content div all the way to the end of the page. Am I missing anything? I thought min-height would work, but it doesn't! It only stretches the content div to page height and everything else is overflow, but without the content div's background color and shadow. Does anybody maybe see where the problem lies? Thank you so much in advance for your help. If you look at the bottom of the page at www.res-technologies_DOT_com/index.php?jos_change_template=restech2 in both IE and FF, you will see that it looks fine in IE, but in FF the page length is extended by exactly the height of the header image at the top of the page. Trying to figure out what's causing this is driving me nuts! Can anyone help? thx dh I have a textarea in a <td>which asks for users for some description. If users enter text and don't use any space or enter, the width of the table gets bigger and bigger and damages the pages design. What can I add (to td.fixed_width css for example )to make the line break after the width of the table is reached??? There is a solution that I put a div in td and then Code: #desc { width:"100%"; width::fixed; overflow:scroll;} but it is not exactly what I want My web page has a display bug in IE 5+ on Windows. Specifically, I have a DIV within which I wish to place two images. The two images are the same height and width, and I want to layer them (the top one is a PNG with transparency, but I have already solved that problem, this is a positioning problem) exactly on top of each other. I have done this by positioning them relatively within the DIV. The first image is top:0;left:0 and the second is top:-150;left:0 (the images are 150 px tall). They layer fine, but the DIV is twice the height (as if the second image were still following the first, making he DIV 300 px tall). I have tried many things and am stumped. Here is the site: URL Here is the relevant CSS: Code: #bannerPhoto { border-bottom-width: 1px; border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-color: #000000; height: 150px; width: 750px; } #bannerPic { position: relative; z-index: 1; left: 0px; top: 0px; } #bannerText { position: relative; z-index: 2; left: 0px; top: -150px; } And the HTML: Code: <div id="bannerPhoto"> <div id="bannerPic"><img src="../images/bannerPhotos/image.jpg" height="150" width="750" /></div> <div id="bannerText"><img src="../images/text-cover.png" height="150" width="750" /></div> </div> Anyone? Thanks, Denver. I am having a problem trying to get one column match the height of another. Within a large DIV box, I created two columns separated by about 20 px. I floated one to the left, then pushed one over to the right. Both boxes will expand depending on the amount of content, but I would like them to match the same height. The boxes will be used throughout the entire website, so it would not make sense to create a background image to try and trick it into being the same height.. or actually specifying the height. Is there any way to tell the left box to be the same height as the right box?? I tried to link to my site but it won't let a new member link to a website. Hi, If you place the below code in a blank HTML page and view it with Safari 2.0.4, you'll see a 130 pixel vertical gap between 1 and 2, and a 320 pixel horizontal gap between 3 and 5. I guess that CSS could fix it but I don't know how. Code: 1 <div> 2 <a> 3 <object> 4 </object> 5 </a> 6 </div> 7 Please test your own fix before suggesting it to me, thanks. Here's the site in Question: http://www.winchps.vic.edu.au It's a standard fixed width floated DIV columns with a wrapper. One thing it does have is a second DIV inside both columns to display the Gradient background over the top of the repeated background. It works perfect in Firefox & IE7 (with a tweak) but IE6 mkes the sidebar nested div drop below the original sidebar DIV click here for a screenshot for those lucky enough not to have IE6. Here's the CSS code for the basic layout: Code: body { font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Sans-Serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: center; margin: 0px 0px 60px 0px; padding:0px; border: 0; line-height: 2; } #header { width: 802px; } #wrapper { width: 802px; margin:0px; padding: 0px; text-align: left; margin: 0 auto; background: url(images/bodybg.jpg) center repeat-y; } #content { padding: 0px; margin: 0px; } #maingrad { background: url(images/winchcontentgrad.jpg) top left repeat-x; padding: 10px; } #main { width: 589px; float: right; background: url(images/winchcontentbg.jpg) repeat; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; } #mainstop { width: 589px; float: right; background: url(images/winchcontentbg.jpg) repeat; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; border-bottom: solid 1px #000; font-size: 10px; } #sidebargrad { background: url(images/winchsidebargrad.jpg) top left repeat-x; padding: 10px 5px 0px 10px; } #sidebar { width: 200px; float: left; background: url(images/winchsidebg.jpg) repeat; line-height: 2; font-size: 14px; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; } I obviously need to put a conditional comment in there, same for what I did for the minor IE7 tweak, but I'm struggling to suss out what's causing it, I haven't found the specific issue on any of the regular sites (PIE etc). Anyone got any ideas? |
