CSS - Netscape 6.2 Floats Not Stretching Parent Float
Hi,
I have an irritating issue with netscape 6.2 on the PC. I have a div that is floated left and this div contains two child divs, also flaoted left. My understanding is that the parent div should be stretched by its children and this is what happens in msie 5.5+, mozilla firefox, netscape 7 and all the decent Mac browsers. Not however NS 6.2. Does anbody know why or a way of making it behave properly? Here is my code: Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en"> <head> <title></title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" /> <style type="text/css" media="screen"> div { border: 1px solid black; float: left; } #d1 { background: #cff; padding: 10px;} #d2 { background: #cf6; width: 200px ; height: 100px; } #d3 { background: #cf9; width: 200px ; height: 100px; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="d1"> <div id="d2">ghdfghdfghdfgh</div> <div id="d3">dfghdfhdfgh</div> </div> </body> </html> many thanks Similar TutorialsI have just a few more CSS bugs to iron out and I can't seem to figure this one out. Here's a link: http://www.plml.org/multitool/index.php In IE8/Firefox it works just as it should: the #solution_area div (contains the multiplication problems) doesn't stretch to its max width. In IE7 the #solution_area div stretches. I've tried taking out all of the contents of the .tab_content divs (just inside the #solution_area div) except for some gibberish text and it works fine. As soon as I put a single thing in, it stretches. What's going on? Hi.. I'm having a problem with floating on a CSS stylesheet. For some reason my text keeps apearing way off to the right of where it is supposed to.. It works fine with IE but not with Netscape. Any ideas? You can view the page he www.localalberta.com The CSS: www.localalberta.com/completeStyle.css Thanks Guys.. Hi all, This is really annoying me and I don't think it should happen!! If you see this page, you will see one of the divs spans the whole page and it has gone behine the floated left element. Now if it wnt below it that would be OK as a block level element, but the content is in the right place. If you reduce the width it sits in its place OK. I think this is strange behavior.... is it correct????? http://www.wellandpower.net/website...req=www_contact Regards Charlie Hello everyone, I am having some problems making my website show the same in all browsers (this is not a doctype problem, I am using a proper one). My problem is with float:left, and here is how I am using it on my website at the moment: Code: #ctr1{float:left;width:189px;} #ctr2{float:left;width:590px;} <div id="ctr1">blahblahblah</div> <div id="ctr2">blahblahblah</div> This shows fine with IE, but with all the Netscape based browsers (NS, Mozilla, Moz Firefox).. and also in Opera, it shows wrong. Is there anything I can use instead of float:left? Thanks. I tried to use height:auto, and put it into the main container, then I put it in the div that is floated. Nothing works in firefox for me. Ive tried searching on google but I cant find anything that works. Basically, its not just an issue with floats, in general, what is the correct way to set divs, to auto expand to cover what is inside and that works in IE, Firefox and safari, is there a way to ? Thanks in advanced. should have read more in the forum. sorry. If you are getting results as in the above image, simply add "clear:both;" to the container (blue) div which you do not want affected and it will flatten its ceiling and stop any float's escaping. -Luke Hi there, I'm back again I'm afriad with another minor problem with my new site design. Have a look at the test version of my website he http://www.eveythingfree.buildtolearn.net/classifieds/ If you are looking at it in Internet Explorer it should look fine, but if you try it in Mozilla Firefox or Netscape it looks badly messed up. The problem is with the 2 boxes near the top of the page, the "latest forum posts" one and the "search box". The whole page (from bellow the navbar) is laid out by the php script that generates most of the content of the site. Thus I am limited in what I can adjust but I can use .css to layout these two boxes. Here is the css that controls the forum and search boxes: Code: .forums { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px; color: #666666; text-decoration: none; border: 1px solid #666666; padding: 5px 10px 10px; background-color: #F9F9F9; position: relative; width: 453px; height: 100px; left: 10px; top: 10px; vertical-align: top; margin-bottom: 10px; float: left; } .searchbox { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px; color: #666666; text-decoration: none; border: 1px solid #666666; background-color: #F9F9F9; width: 230px; height: 100px; left: 20px; vertical-align: top; margin-bottom: 10px; padding-top: 15px; top: 10px; position: relative; } .listings { position: relative; top: 10px; } Now I'm pretty sure that the problem lies with the "float" property in .forums. I seem to recall Mozilla and Netscape don't recognise this in the same way IE does. Is there a way of making the site look the same in other browsers as it does in IE? Without the "float" property I have failed to get it to look right, but there must be some way around this problem. I'd really appreciate any help, as this one thing has been holding me back for ages! Thanks, Robert I have floating items inside of floating items. The problem is I cannot clear my floating items in the middle column because that ruins the other columns. How can I clear floats in the middle column? Do you have any better ideas to make my layout work? I have attached in image of how the layout should work. But, these 2 divs have to unordered lists in them. I know my CSS is pretty average if not worse. My layout looks fine except for when I add 2 divs.. I have the float:left with %50 widths.. Screen shot of how my layout looks. img209.imageshack.us/img209/2913/idear.gif I did not add any clear tags to my css.. which I think might be what's causing the issue. Side note: In IE compatibility view the top of the page has a gap and so does the right of the page.. the logo and footer are both 100% width and the top div has a -negative margin to close the gap, it looks fine without compatibility view, and fine in firefox, and chrome. XHTML passed validation and so did CSS. This is before even messing with the columns. I didn't do anything with the unordered lists. Maybe i should ask how to correctly make my layout first.. Because what I've been doing is just adding new divs where I see fit, and then going back to edit the CSS till it works. Thanks for helping me out! BTW: what book would you recommend me getting.. I understand basics of CSS and I think I'm good with XHTML, I just need to get a better definition of CSS than w3schools has to offer. Thanks again. subject isn't too good anyhow.. i have 4 cells __ __ |1 | |2 | --- --- __ __ |3| |4 | --- --- 2 and 4 are said to float right, such that 1 and 3 define the height of the page.. but.. when the contents of 2 go LONGER than the contents of 1, number 4 doesn't float right properly.. instead this happens __ __ |1 | |2 | --- | | --- | | |4| --- --- __ |3| --- do you see that? 4 tries to float right, but since it's called underneath 1, and 2 is extended, floating right relative to the page doesn't make it ACTUALLY float right any thoughts that will render this properly? (namely that cells 1 and 3 will inherit the height of 2 and 4 somehow?) Hi There - Am converting another design from tables, working with a CMS (Drupal) and an existing CSS / table combination that I didn't write and have no choice about. Think of the header as having three sections. The top section has logo on the left, search box on the right. Rounded corners. I'm cool with that section. Then there's a space. Created a div for the space. Love the space. Problems with the space in IE. Will go into it later. Then there's the next section. Rounded corners. Contains the entire page. On the left is a pulldown menu, about 1 cm from the top. On the right is a tabbed menu. This menu has flexible height. It needs to be right up against the bottom with the menu below it. Call this section the tabbed menu section. Third section. Immediately below that is a bar menu like the one Apple's got. Looks like a metal bar with divisions. Call this primary links. ---------- First, the space between. In IE, when you roll over the bar menu, the space disappears. Won't come back. Initially, in the second section, floated the pulldown menu left and the tabbed menu right. That worked fine, except that the tabbed menu had a width of 100% and pushed up the pulldown menu so the section was too wide. When I put it to 65%, all hell broke loose with the bar menu in the third section below it and bits of it snuck up into the second section. If I left it alone, and left the tabbed menu at 100%, when I checked over its container with firebug, it said that it was being affected by the primary links. I figured that out also because the background for that container was a really weird color that I finally found in the background of the navigation id and changed to white. Primary was overlapping it so I couldn't see it with firebug. So after fiddling with several clearing methods, I gave up and decided to try a table. Table worked fine, and the second section looks good except that there's a one pixel space between the tabbed menu and the bar menu. --------- It is my greatest wish right now to be able to float the pulldown to the left, the tabbed menu to the right and have the primary links stay below. I wish I could get the space to work and I wish for a clear understanding of it all so I can then figure out where to put the corners. Anyone who can enlighten me on this would have my undying gratitude. I've been working on this all day and the deadline's tomorrow. Code: <div id="top part" logo and searchbox </div> <div> that pesky space that disappears in IE when roll over primary links </div> <div id=navcontainer> dropdown and tabbed menu </div> <div id="navigation" class="menu> <!-- couldn't find the menu class in the css --> <div id="primary" class="clear-block"> contains barmenu - very fussy </div> </div> Here's the relevant CSS: Code: div#navigation { background: #fff url(../images/blue/menu-bg.png) 100% 100% repeat-x; } #primary { line-height: 30px; } #primary ul { padding:0; margin:0; list-style:none; } #primary li { display:inline; } #primary a { font-weight:bold; display:block; float:left; padding:0px 14px 0px 14px; margin: 0px 1px 0px 0px; font-size: 95%; } #primary a { background-position:0% 0px; } #primary a:hover { text-decoration: none; background-position:0% -42px; } #primary a.active { background-position: 0% -84px; } #primary a { background: url(../images/blue/menu-div.png) 100% 0 repeat-y; color:#666666; font-size: 120%; font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; } #primary a:hover { color: 666666; background: #B8B8B8; } #primary a.active { color: 666666; background: #B8B8B8; } This is my first try at css and i have been at it about a week on and off. I have tried to use examples from here and the o'reilly CSS cookbook. I want to create a two column row of pictures with a caption. I selected DIV as the tool (my css is below). The container DIV looks great. I want the div.float, however, to start a second row when a third picture is added and to continue thereafter with successive two column rows. Unfortunately, each of my rows contain only one picture. here is my css style sheet. A demonstration of the problem can be seen at: http://www.yourline-online.com/demo05/?How_to_create_pages Code: div.float { float: left; BORDER-RIGHT: #808080 2px solid; PADDING-RIGHT: 2px; BORDER-TOP: #808080 2px solid; PADDING-LEFT: 2px; FONT-WEIGHT: lighter; FONT-SIZE: medium; PADDING-BOTTOM: 20px; MARGIN: 16px 2%; BORDER-LEFT: #808080 2px solid; COLOR: #000000; PADDING-TOP: 2px; BORDER-BOTTOM: #808080 2px solid; HEIGHT: 200px; WIDTH: 150px; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff; TEXT-DECORATION: none } div.float p { text-align: center; } div.container { border: 2px dashed #333; background-color: #ffe; } div.spacer { clear: both; } MY HTML is like this: Code: H1>How to create pages</H1> <P>The headings are used for splitting up the content file. An H1, H2 or H3 heading will dynamically split the document into new pages in the table of contents. An H4-heading is used as a heading within a page. I have my webpage: http://www.houseofhawkins.com/index.html which works great in IE. the part in question is the menu tabs at the top. Within IE they keep the width I have given them.. In firefox they only go to the width of the text. They are links with the following CSS attached: div#Header #MenuSection a.MenuTab { PHP Code: filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Gradient(endColorstr='#A8DBA8', startColorstr='#A4B7A4', gradientType='0'); font-weight: bold; text-align: center; font-size: 1.3em; background-color: #BCD6BC; border-style: solid; border-width: 1px; border-color: #A5BEA5 #BCD6BC #BCD6BC #A5BEA5; margin: 0 5px 0 2px; height: 1.5em; width: 140px; padding: 5px 1px 1px 1px; } div#Header #MenuSection { float:left; margin-top: 30px; } here is the HTML code for that part of the page. PHP Code: <div ID="MenuSection"> <a Class="SelectedMenuTab" Title="You are currently viewing the Home page">Home</a> <a Class="MenuTab" href="" title="Curriculum Vitae for Jonathan Hawkins, Author of House of Hawkins">CV</a> <a Class="MenuTab" href="http://houseofhawkins.com/projects/index.html" title="Portfolio of Work created by Jon Hawkins">Portfolio</a> <a Class="MenuTab" href="" title="Online Photo Gallery of Jon, friends and family">Photo Gallery</a> <a Class="MenuTab" href="http://houseofhawkins.com/games.html" title="Games created by House of Hawkins">Games</a> </div> <div style="clear:left"> </div> I just dont get why firefox wont be nice and give me the width I ask for... the oddest bit is if I put float:left into the menutab part they do work! I wish to understand why its like this... I have attached the CSS and the file if that helps anyone. Thanks for the help and advice. I read a thread on div streching but I didn't totally understand what was going on in that particular case so I thought I create a new thread and throw my code up as well. I'm trying to have a minimum height with a footer anchored at the bottom of the div (contained within it for the bg image to carry through behind the footer). But I can't seem to get all the pieces to work together. The problem I'm dealing with now is that the div won't stretch and the footer will be pushed down way too far. Here is what's happening. So how do I get the div to keep a minimum height of 706px or like 80% and then how do I get it to auotmatically stretch with the content and keep the footer anchored at the bottom of the stretched div? So I wrote out some very basic containers, and am looking for some very basic answers, even if they're only "no, it won't work." So let's say I have a layout like this: PHP Code: <div style="height: 100%; width: 100%; border: 2px red dashed; text-align: center;"> <!-- outside div --> <div style="height: 200px; width: 300px; border: 2px blue solid; text-align: left; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; "> <!-- centered div --> <div style="height: 100px; width: 100px; border: 2px green dashed; text-align: left; float: left;"> <!-- floated div 1 --> hello world 1 <!-- /floated div 1 --> </div> <div style="height: 100px; width: auto; border: 2px orange dashed; text-align: left; float: left;"> <!-- floated div 2 --> hello world 2 <!-- /floated div 2 --> </div> <div style="font-size: 0px; height: 0px; width: 0px; clear: both;"> <!-- clear div / --> </div> <!-- /centered div --> </div> <!-- /outside div --> </div> What I want to happen is for the orange div (floated div 2) to fill the rest of the width of the surrounding blue div (centered div). I know with this simple example I can simply set the pixel width, but I want to eventually make it more dynamic, allowing for variable sizes, like if I set the blue div to be a percentage instead of a fixed width. Any ideas? (Even links to appropriate threads are appreciated!) Thanks! (edit: had to update "centered div" to be firefox compatible) I have two divs floated inside another div, but the outside div isn't stretching to accommodate the inner divs. Why not? Here's how it looks now: Code: <html> <head> <title>CSS Divisions</title> <style type="text/css"> #Wrapper { width:800px; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; text-align:left; } #Header { width:800px; height:120px; background:#FC6;} #PNav { width:800px; height:40px; float:left; background:#CCC; } #Content { width:800px; height:400px; float:left; overflow:hidden; background:#FFC; } #Footer { width:100%; height:80px; float:left; text-align:center; background-color:#FC6; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="Wrapper"> <div id="Header">Header</div> <div id="PNav">Navigation</div> <div id="Content">Content</div> </div> <div id="Footer">Footer</div> </body> </html> Ideally what I want is for the page to look exactly how it is, but with the footer stretching from the bottom of the Content div, down to the bottom of the wherever the user's browser has loaded; basically to fill the vertical remainder of the screen. I've tried setting the footer height to 100%, but that forces the page to extend vertically, and I fumbled around with about a dozen other techniques not really knowing what I was doing, and I've had no luck so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated! |
