CSS - Css Divs And Font Decenders
heyya all,
Lets say you make div 10px high, line-heigh of 50% and a font-size on 10px. In netscape the div maintains it's 10px height, and the decenders of the font are outside of the div. In IE the div expands to 12px. adding overflow:none changes nothing. thoughts? see pic.. Similar TutorialsHi! I have a problem at andreaspohlmann.com with an (on win7) IE8 Problem, same problem on XP for FF and IE. The text underneath the start images should be the same format as the text underneath any of the gallery pics: see http://www.andreaspohlmann.com/wirtschaft/daimler/ difference between the two is first is nested 2 divs further, due to the slideshow and has a class instead of the id the style that should be applied is: (i used everything I could think of to disable inheritance) #bu h1, .bu h1, .caption { font-family:"Arial", Helvetica, sans-serif; background-color:none; color: #000; text-decoration: none; word-spacing: normal; text-align: right; letter-spacing: 0; text-indent: 0; line-height: 10px; font-size: 10px; font-weight: bolder ; font-style: normal; text-transform: lowercase; display:block; } Still IE8 makes it look smaller, adding 1px makes it too large. the styles seem to be exactly the same in the IE developer thingy. I'm at a loss, any help apreciated. Cheers, Chris. Ok, so I've learned to stay away from tables when you don't need them, and I have an instance where this is the case. I have a container div that has a header, content and a footer. On my home page, I have to divs next to each other with the same height and a div below them towards the right. To simplify my problem, look at this example. Code: <html> <body> <div style="float:right"> Hello there! </div> <hr> </body> </html> If there's a "float:right" on that div, the hr tag below doesn't get pushed down. But if I use relative positioning and don't use the floats, I can't put the two top divs next to each other. The other option is to use absolute positioning, but again content below doesn't get pushed down correctly. It seems that using "clear:both" works, but it seems weird that this has to be done. For example if I have floating divs in a container, I can get them to stretch out the container like so: Code: <html> <body> <div style="border: 1px solid #000; "> <div style="float:right"> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> Hello there!<br /> </div> <div style="clear: both"></div> </div> <hr> </body> </html> Am I missing something fundamental here? Is there a better solution? Thanks in advance. Here's the site in Question: http://www.winchps.vic.edu.au It's a standard fixed width floated DIV columns with a wrapper. One thing it does have is a second DIV inside both columns to display the Gradient background over the top of the repeated background. It works perfect in Firefox & IE7 (with a tweak) but IE6 mkes the sidebar nested div drop below the original sidebar DIV click here for a screenshot for those lucky enough not to have IE6. Here's the CSS code for the basic layout: Code: body { font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Sans-Serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: center; margin: 0px 0px 60px 0px; padding:0px; border: 0; line-height: 2; } #header { width: 802px; } #wrapper { width: 802px; margin:0px; padding: 0px; text-align: left; margin: 0 auto; background: url(images/bodybg.jpg) center repeat-y; } #content { padding: 0px; margin: 0px; } #maingrad { background: url(images/winchcontentgrad.jpg) top left repeat-x; padding: 10px; } #main { width: 589px; float: right; background: url(images/winchcontentbg.jpg) repeat; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; } #mainstop { width: 589px; float: right; background: url(images/winchcontentbg.jpg) repeat; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; border-bottom: solid 1px #000; font-size: 10px; } #sidebargrad { background: url(images/winchsidebargrad.jpg) top left repeat-x; padding: 10px 5px 0px 10px; } #sidebar { width: 200px; float: left; background: url(images/winchsidebg.jpg) repeat; line-height: 2; font-size: 14px; border-left: solid 1px #000; border-right: solid 1px #000; } I obviously need to put a conditional comment in there, same for what I did for the minor IE7 tweak, but I'm struggling to suss out what's causing it, I haven't found the specific issue on any of the regular sites (PIE etc). Anyone got any ideas? Centering DIVs inside other DIVs in Firefox? Can it be done in a straight forward way? Setting the inner DIVs float to none seemed to work for IE but not FF. The Example I've read a bunch about how div's won't stretch to accomidate div's inside of them if they overrun the height/min-height set for the container div. How do I get around this? You can see the skeleton of the site above. It's fine unless you resize the window smaller than the content. Alright, I've been working on my own custom border box for a while and I've almost got it, but it has a few problems still. How I do it is I have one div that contains it all (.box) that defines the height and width of the whole box. Then I have three boxRows to lay out the images, and then I define how three cells in each of those rows should behave, very much like how custom borders used to be done with tables. Here are the problems: In both firefox and internet explorer, the bottom row and the far right column actually appear OUTSIDE the .box containing box. There are two additional problems in internet explorer. First, the middle row handles the auto height differently and only expands about 10px instead of the height of the containing box. The second is that the whole middle row for some reason appears to be pushed to the right by about 16px. Any help would be appreciated. Here's the code: HTML: Code: <html> <head> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="reset.css" /> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="testBox.css"> </head> <body> <div class="box"> <div class="boxRowTop"> <div class="boxCellLeft"></div> <div class="boxCellMiddle"></div> <div class="boxCellRight"></div> </div> <div class="boxRowMiddle"> <div class="boxCellLeft"></div> <div class="boxCellMiddle"></div> <div class="boxCellRight"></div> </div> <div class="boxRowBottom"> <div class="boxCellLeft"></div> <div class="boxCellMiddle"></div> <div class="boxCellRight"></div> </div> </body> </html> And here is the layout css file: Code: /* Box classes */ .box { background: rgb(120,120,120); height: 200px; width: 500px; } .boxRowTop { height: 16px; position: relative; width:%100; } .boxRowMiddle { height: auto; width:%100; position: relative; } .boxRowBottom { height: 16px; width:%100; position: relative; } .boxCellLeft { height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 16px; } .boxCellMiddle { height: 100%; margin-left: 16px; margin-right: 16px; width: auto; } .boxCellRight { height: 100%; left: 100%; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 16px; } /* Define Cell Backgrounds/Images */ .boxRowTop .boxCellLeft { background: url(../LandingImages/topleft_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } .boxRowTop .boxCellMiddle { background: url(../LandingImages/top_border.png) repeat-x; } .boxRowTop .boxCellRight { background: url(../LandingImages/topright_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } .boxRowMiddle .boxCellLeft { background: url(../LandingImages/left_border.png) repeat-y; } .boxRowMiddle .boxCellMiddle { background: rgb(255,255,255); } .boxRowMiddle .boxCellRight { background: url(../LandingImages/right_border.png) repeat-y; } .boxRowBottom .boxCellLeft { background: url(../LandingImages/bottomleft_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } .boxRowBottom .boxCellMiddle { background: url(../LandingImages/bottom_border.png) repeat-x; } .boxRowBottom .boxCellRight { background: url(../LandingImages/bottomright_circ_corner.png) no-repeat; } And last, the reset CSS, which I don't think has anything to do with the problems because if I take it out it still has them. Thanks! I have a 'DIV' tag, its css height property is set to 15px. Why is it, that it's not really 15px until I insert "font: 10px Verdana " *** one of the rules? So fi I have: #topSeperate { height: 15px; width: 100%; background-color: #00FF00; font-weight: bold; font: 10pt Verdana; } The div is perfect, but as soon as I remove the font: tag, it grows in height about 4px even though there is no text typed in the 'DIV'. If this doesnt make sense and you need further explaination, Let me know. Hi there, Does anyone know what font this is that is used for text such as "Everything you need to get a professional website online" at the top and below: "Takeaway Website Standard" When I highlight it, it has a black bacground which is unusual. Any ideas? Thanks! I am trying to use this font for my text: http://www.google.com/webfonts/specimen/Droid+Sans I have tried using: font-family: 'Droid Sans', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; but it doesn't work. Any ideas? Thanks! I would like to set my site so that any text not given a specific class id for CSS will appear as a certain font. can I do this, and if so, how? thanks. Hey everyone. I've been reading up on @font-face, and to me it seems like not many people are using this. Its more or less supported in all browsers (well, not ie 6) so was wondering if there is a reason no one is using this that I'm over looking? If not it seems awesome, and I think it will make the designers here giddy with joy. Whats the best way to fix font size? I use CSS. The font size seems to stay fix on IE but not on Mozilla and Netscape. Also I notice when I use adgui font it stay fix no matter in what browser and no matter at what text view. Why is that. Are there more of this kinda fonts? Bottom line, whats the best way to fix the size of fonts regardless of browser and at what text view. Thanks for you help Liz i copied some of this code from a page i liked. all it is is a background image and i want to type text over it that is in a table. the problem is i cannot center my text ("<?=$information[nickName]?>"). the text always is on the left, never in the center. i have tried different things such as <td align=center> as opposed to the <td valign=center> the other author has in the 2nd block, the align:center does not work with font. and i have tried appending a ;text-align:center within that SPAN tag, but that does not work either. does anyone have any advice??? thanks! <table border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 width="750" style="border: solid black 2px;"> <tr><td style="background-image:url(images/name_test.jpg); background-attachment: 100% 0%"> <table border="0" cellspacing=0 cellpadding=1><TR><TD valign="center"><SPAN style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial black, helvetica; padding: 3px; align: center;"><?=$information[nickName]?></SPAN></TD></TR> </table> I'm making a site, and the guy I'm making it for says he wanted a more 'tough' font. So I downloaded a, 'tough' but still readable of course, font. The main page has an iframe, and the content in the iframe is where the text goes that has the tough font. Everything works when it's offline. But when I try uploading it, it's the old font. I even check the source and it's all old. The server is running extremely slow right now, so that might be the problem and it just hasn't uploaded yet or something. Because I also deleted the content files and refreshed the page and it was still old. So, I'll wait a little longer and check or something. I also know that viewers can't see custom fonts if they don't have them on their pc. So this is kind of seeming pretty pointless. But is there ANYWAY I Can make it viewable to everyone that views the site. So they can see the font even if they don't have it on their pc. Like, make them have it temporarily or something. My friend told me it had something to do with CSS, but I don't really know. Anything I can do to make it work? Is there maybe a Java Script I can use? hi, someone using foxfire keeps saying the my font is really really tiny, I have my css file like:
Code: body { background: #FFFFFF; /* for internet explorer */ scrollbar-face-color: #FFFFFF; scrollbar-highlight-color: #FFFFFF; scrollbar-shadow-color: #FFFFFF; scrollbar-3dlight-color: #494969; scrollbar-arrow-color: #494969; scrollbar-track-color: #FFFFFF; scrollbar-darkshadow-color: #494969; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; border-top: 1px solid #8E9397; border-left: 1px solid #8E9397; font-color: #494969; font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica; font-size: 8pt; text-align: left; } a:link,a:active,a:visited { color: #494969; text-decoration: none } a:hover { text-decoration: underline; color: #494969; position: relative; top: -1px; left: -1px; } hr { background: transparent; color: #494969; height: 1px; border-width: 0px; } fieldset { margin: 0; padding: 1px; border: 1px solid #494969; } legend { margin: 0; padding: 7px; color: #494969; background: transparent; font-weight: bold; } img { border: 0px; } table { background: transparent; } tr { background: transparent; } td { background: transparent; color: #494969; font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica; font-size: 70%; } input, textarea, select { color: #494969; font: normal 11px Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; background: transparent; border: 1px solid #494969; border-style: inset; text-align: center; text-indent: 2px; } form { margin: 0px; padding: 0px; } any idea on whats wrong? and I would of changed the % to an actual value but I wanted to make it so people can control the size of the font to lager or smaller here is a preview with that css file in use : http://www.dbznetwork.net/ I'm trying to write a website at the moment and I want to use <h1>/<h2> etc for the headings. Problem is though, the heading is going in to a blue bar and the font needs to be the right size. And naturally, IE and FF display the font in different sizes How would I fix this problem so that the font renders the same size? Could I make a hacked CSS class that only IE can see that I can apply to the <h1> tag to change the font-size to make it the same size as FF displays it as? Is there any way to embed font so it would be viewable by firefox? I know yo can do it in IE, but can't find a way for firefox. Thanks, Greg Is possible to write this in one line? : Code: font: 12px Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 1.4; What I need to do to put line-height: 1.4; in font line ? Hi, Suppose I define a font-family with several fallbacks, for example: Code: font-family: "Georgia", "Liberation Serif", serif; Now I would like to know which font did the browser effectively pick without me having to go through my system looking for which fonts are installed. When I inspect the text with tools such as Firebug or the Web Developer Toolbar, they just give me the full font-family definition, but don't tell me the actual font being used... Thank you in advance! Jean Well, the title might be a little oversimplified, but I guess it caught your attention In the past, I always set my font sizes using px. I know that this is not the appropriate standard (since it doesn't allow a user to re-size the font on their end), but I usually did it because it was easiest and most predictable. Now, I finally want to make the step towards more accessibility and I would like to learn a little bit more about using em's appropriately. Does anyone have any good advise on how to get started with the following questions: How/where do I set the initial font-size, from which I can use em's? What are the dangers of using em's instead of px? Where could this change impact my usual styling? Are there any good resources/tutorials about this? Any help/suggestions/ideas are appreciated... |
