HTML - Links Will Not Work On Index Page
Similar TutorialsI think there is a simple fix for this...but I can't think of it. My client has an existing site (not very well designed and no templates) with hundreds of static pages. She wants me to create a new home (index.htm) page that is just a simple landing page where people can choose to enter her website OR visit the store to purchase products. Simple enough...but, now all of the 100's of static pages have the link Home=index.htm on them. I want people to type in the URL: www.mysite.com (for example) and land on the new page to choose to go to the site to learn about her and her music OR go to the store to shop. Once they are in the site, however, and hit the home link, I don't want them to go 'all the way back out' to the new landing page. I want them to go back to the 'old' index.htm page (or her current home page), without having to change the index.htm links on those 100's of pages. Is there an easy fix for this, using a naming convention for the home page? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am a bit stumped on this one. The system is layered such that I have the top level index.html file, then in the same directory, I can add new folders that contain other index.html files. What I want to do is have the top level index.html file pick up every sub directory, grab the name from the directory, and then create a link to that directory's index.html file and then display it in the top level index.html file. In the header is text at this moment with a link. Again, this link DOES work. Clicking also does nothing. I've run both homepage and stylesheet through the W3C Validator and the only errors it comes up with are to do with the ad my host automatically puts at the bottom of each page and CSS3. Interestingly, you cannot highlight anything on the page except that ad. If it's relevant, I've used SSIs to add the code for the navigation bar onto each page. I've tested the site in IE8, Firefox 3.6.19 and Chrome 8.0.552.224. It only works in IE (). It also works when opening the files offline in all the browsers and when using XAMPP. When in 1440 x 900 all the links work fine. The two links that stop working in 800x600 are Home and Menu. Any ideas on what could cause this? The link to the index page works but not the others. The people at fatcow where completely useless and just kept saying it was a scripting issue. however, if it were a scripting issue it wouldn't work locally. Any insight? Hey everyone. Wanted your opinions and knowledge on something. I have a friend who is setting up a splash page for her site. However the way her hosting company has things set up she will need to rename her current home page from index.html to something else, and make the splash page the new index.html. She's under the impression that if her current home page is renamed to something other than index it will lose significant value in her website's ranking. I've never heard of that. Her meta tags will be kept intact, and the splash page will have meta tags, and will link to both the home page and sitemap so I don't think search engines will have any problem spidering her site. And I don't really think it will affect her ranking. What do you all think? Am I wrong? |
