HTML - How To Pass Child Window Value To Parentwindow In Html Using Java Script?

I'm trying to set up html links in a parent window that update content in the same child window(rather than opening successive new windows with each click). Having the same target name in the anchor tag looks to be the easiest way to do this but it's not working in conjunction with a servlet mapping.
