Here's an example page featuring wii games consoles if you want to go directly to the source. http://www.ecbiz.co.uk/wii-console.htm All comments welcome! A I have a Web site whose pages are XHTML 1.0 Strict, and the vast majority of them are valid pages, according to the W3C validation page. Some of the pages are not valid, however, as I use some items such as target="_blank" and ol start="26" and items like that. Would any problems develop with indexing (or with anything else) if I decided to make the invalid pages transitional and keep the rest strict? Is it ok to have a mix of XHTML 1.0 Strict and XHTML 1.0 Transitional on a single site? hello, i have tried to validate the line below, which is part of a form. i added selected="selected" rather than just selected, and one error was removed, but - i still get the same error message. the s in front of the sml value is in red indicating it is where the problem is located. <option value=sml_:16.00 selected="selected">S</option> the message ---- Line 442, Column 35: an attribute value specification must be an attribute value literal unless SHORTTAG YES is specified ----- i don't know how to specify SHORTTAG YES in this line of code I am trying to move forward with xhtml, and am declaring the doc type as 1.0 transitional. hope someone will help me with this. weblost - Hello everyone! I've scoured around for a bit looking for an answer to a stupid question without success, so I'll pose it here. Currently I am working on a bit of Java code that prints out a document in XHTML 1.0 Strict Transitional. The document displays a formatted list of stock information. What I want is an <option> drop down list with the days of the week, and upon clicking on one of those days, the page automatically refreshes to show the stocks for that day. So very simple, I need for the page to change to a different .html file in the same directory onmouseup, I believe the action is. Here is my .java code, for those interested: Code: import java.util.*; import java.lang.*; import java.io.*; import java.text.DecimalFormat; public class Portfolio { public static ArrayList<String> stocks = new ArrayList<String>(); public static DecimalFormat fmt = new DecimalFormat("0.##"); public static int tot = 0; public Portfolio(){} public static void main(String[]args) throws IOException { stocks.add("APPL 5.67 3"); stocks.add("DFG 54.87 78"); stocks.add("DGSF 93.62 5"); printPortfolio(stocks); } public static void printPortfolio(ArrayList<String> strar) throws IOException { String stockName = new String(); double stockVal = 0.0; int numShares = 0; StringTokenizer st; stocks = strar; PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter("Portfolio.html"); out.println("<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"); out.println("http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd\">"); out.println("<html xmlns=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml\">"); out.println("<head>"); out.println("<title>User's JSMS Stock Portfolio</title>"); out.println("</head>"); out.println("<body>"); out.println("<img border=\"0\" src=\"ball16.gif\" width=\"29\" height=\"28\" alt=\"Ball\">"); out.println("<pre>"); out.println("STOCK NAME PRICE SHARES OWNED TOTAL"); out.println("---------- ----- ------------ -----</br>"); for(String str : stocks) { st = new StringTokenizer(str); stockName = st.nextToken(); stockVal = Double.parseDouble(st.nextToken()); numShares = Integer.parseInt(st.nextToken()); if(numShares > 0) { String SN = new String(); int nShares = 0; double price = 0; st = new StringTokenizer(str); SN = st.nextToken(); int numS = 25 - SN.length(); out.print(SN); //inserts # of spaces after data based upon data string length while(numS > 0) { out.print(" "); numS--; } price = Double.parseDouble(st.nextToken()); out.print("$" + price); double tumS = 18.0 - (Double.toString(price).length()); //inserts # of spaces after data based upon data string length while(tumS > 0) { out.print(" "); tumS--; } nShares = Integer.parseInt(st.nextToken()); out.print(nShares); numS = 19 - (Integer.toString(nShares).length()); //inserts # of spaces after data based upon data string length while(numS > 0) { out.print(" "); numS--; } out.println("$" + fmt.format(nShares*price) + "</br>"); tot += Double.parseDouble(fmt.format(nShares*price)); } } out.println("--------------------------------------------------------------------"); out.println("Stock Portfolio Net Worth : " + "$" + fmt.format(tot) + "</br>"); out.println("</pre>"); out.println("<p>"); out.println("Please Choose a Day:"); out.println("<br /><br />"); out.println("<select name=\"day\">"); out.println("<option selected=\"selected\">Monday</option>"); out.println("<option>Tuesday</option>"); out.println("<option>Wednesday</option>"); out.println("</select>"); out.println("</p>"); out.println("</body>"); out.println("</html>"); out.close(); } } At the bottom you can see a simple option list. This is the one that I want to be the day-chooser. In many of the places I've looked it talks about passing the value of the choice to a server. This is not my intention. I am thinking, possibly stupidly, that I can store the value of the choice in a variable and then in javascript have the page refreshed to the corresponding .html file in the directory. If this is the case, example code would be very much appreciated haha. Thank you! Hi, I just copied W3C's XHTML1.1 valid icon in my website and it displays correctly in Opera, Firefox, Chrome and Safari but it displays with a purple square around it in IE9. Any idea about why is this happening? Thank you! Hi there, I m using dom with css in my web page. Using the document type <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> My dom effect is not visible in mozilla 2.0. In stead if I am using the document type <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> the dom effect is visible. Is this vaild using w3c standards? Any help in this issue would be appreciable. Thanks in advance Hi there, I m using dom with css in my web page. Using the document type <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> My dom effect is not visible in mozilla 2.0. Any help in this issue would be appreciable. Thanks in advance Which document type is easy and most used either Transitional or Strict? As I have validated my page using w3c validator it asks to define class for each and every thing like <table class="xx"> .xx {width:40%;} This makes maintainablility easy but if I have to define 20 different widths I cant use class names just for these widths.. Will Transitional doc type support this?? We are posting jobs on a new website using HTML and in the body of the post we get the before and in between some lines. Now I know this is used for no-break spaces but in isn't in my code at all. It only shows up on the job post. How can I stop this from showing up. If you need to see the code I can get it. Thanks for any help, Bill I'm adding some ad sense code into my second side bar of my blog. However i have a large widget image which i have placed in my first (left) side panel and it's taking over both panels. I'm un-able to add a widget into the second (right) side pannel as it overrights the code for the right side pannel for 'archives' and 'blogroll', which is fine. But i'm wanting to place some adsense code under my large image in the right side, but the ad sense code over rights the image! So, i need to add a bunch of paragraphs to make it shift down lower, i'm using close to 30 <p< </p> so i can get the adsense code low enough to not cover over the left panels large image. So i'm wondering, is there a smarter, or better way of getting this code down lower? I know i could use CSS and a margin, but i'm not really sure how to make that change. Is there a HTML way of doing this, or is the large amount of spaces i've put in ok? Thanks! www.nikkisblogspot.com if my description was a bit confusing. PS. Whats with IE? My widgets are all over the shop and some aren't even showing?? Hi all - I bet this is a quick one, but it's new to me I tried to validate a page I just built in xhtml transitional and got errors on the use of   on my page. I've researched this afternoon and found other recommended code to use -   and/or 00A0 for a non breaking space instead but I'm still not able to validate. I am using the code as a space between several pictures I have on a page all in a row. Is there other code I should be using that will validate instead of  ? Maybe I'm just not using the code correctly - should I have it in quotes? " " or "00A0"? Thanks - MN Just out of curiosity, if a server returns a page with code 3xx and a "Location: url_1" header, but also includes a <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=url_2"/> tag, then would the browser be expected to redirect to url_1 or url_2? Hello Reader, I am very new at html (so please no CSS) and this is what Im trying to do 1) Have my logo on the far right and the page 2) Put the website name in the centre of the page Ive done a wrap (I think and it seems to be working) the problem is: the website name is not going in the centre of the whole page but the centre of the page from where the logo ends (on the right of the page). So if you look at the company name its not in the centre of the page but in the centre of the page from where the logo ends. I have decided to work with that as it will actually look good with what I want to do - My question is this: If I did want to centre the company name to the middle of the page could I use   (loads of them!) to position it exactly where I wanted on the page and is that good practice? And if not what can I use in its stead?? Any advice will be very much appreciated!!!! Which one is better? XHTML STRICT 1.0 or XHTML 1.1 At the moment you can go to my site either by going to: www.sitename.com or http://sitename.com And that seems to mess up the login script. So how can i tell it to automatically add in the www. if they try to access the site through: http://sitename.com Thank you. I just got a site from www.supergreenhosting.com This is my site: http://gauranga.biz When i put www.gauranga.biz in address bar it don't show up. But above address does, why is that? Hello, can you please tell me what purpose has this html / page? Thanks. <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2 Final//EN"> <html> <head> <style> a:link {font:8pt/11pt verdana; color:red} a:visited {font:8pt/11pt verdana; color:#4e4e4e} </style> <meta HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" Content="text-html; charset=Windows-1252"> <title>HTTP 404 Not Found</title> <script language='javascript' src='http://127.0.0.1:1029/js.cgi?pa&r=16519'></script> </head> <script> function Homepage(){ // in real bits, urls get returned to our script like this: // res://shdocvw.dll/http_404.htm#http://www.DocURL.com/bar.htm //For testing use //DocURL = "res://shdocvw.dll/http_404.htm#https://www.microsoft.com/bar.htm" DocURL=document.location.href; //this is where the http or https will be, as found by searching for :// but skipping the res:// protocolIndex=DocURL.indexOf("://", 4); //this finds the ending slash for the domain server serverIndex=DocURL.indexOf("/", protocolIndex + 3); //for the href, we need a valid URL to the domain. The embedded side of my project is not much of a problem to me, I have background on this. But HTML is a new animal and I am low on the learning curve. I apologize if this is an unlearned question. The attached file is one I cut and pasted together by an eclectic approach . The page layout is a little asymmetric, but has its elements in (close to) the right places. The presentation is nice. It also displays the values from the PIC correctly, but in two different "divisions" of the code. I admit, I don't know s__ from shinola about this. I am just cutting and pasting and trying to follow some general syntax concepts. And I have by utter beginner's luck gotten something that somewhat "works". Referring to line 39 of the attached file, the "display" division, the following 25 paragraphs of type: <p>updateParm0: <span id="updtParm0">?</span></p> Are working correctly and displaying the value associated in the mchp.js file which contains the dynamic variable array. Of course, this printing screws up the placements of all the elements in the large table which follows. But this will ultimately not be a problem, because these paragraphs won't remain in the code. What I would like to accomplish is to remove the 25 paragraphs in the "display" division, and cause the "updtParmXX" values to appear on the page in the placement described by the table layouts. Could someone tell me briefly how to do this? Or if I need a completely different approach? Thanks. PS: the attached .zip file is index.htm in its day job. |
