HTML - Layering (z-index?) Problems.
Hey all, I just finished up this semester at college and had an Intro to Web Development class. So, I got the site I made live because it was for my families business.
The site is www.kceonline.com What I'm having trouble with is getting things to re size and fit right when the window is either shrunk or if viewed on a smaller resolution monitor. If you view the site, I got the Contact image and the small slide show to go under the main content. I then added the bigger picture of our cars and it won't shrink with the content, the same happens on the Links page and with the E-mail form on the Contact Us page. I was also wondering if anyone had some suggestions on what to do on the Gallery page to make it look more professional on smaller screens because it causes the rows to become smaller. I designed the site on a 19" wide so this problem wasn't really apparent to me at the time and I don't think I can figure it out alone. I messed with the Z-index for a while before my presentation but couldn't figure it out. Now that I have it live, my Grandma, who owns the company, is wanting to show it to people. Any help is appreciated lots. Similar TutorialsI have a web site with videos on and I take a frame from the video to use as a thumbnail. I don't want to have to put the "play" button on every thumbnail when editing the picture so I want to have a transparent play button. As you can see, I've done this on www.hucknallwarriors.co.uk/tv/. The play button is a separate, transparent image over the thumbnail. My issue is to do with the sizing of the image. I want to upload ONE high res image for the thumbnail which can be used in other areas of the web site so I want to be able to specify the size it's displayed on screen. As you can see on "http://hucknallwarriors.co.uk/category/warriors-tv/page/2/" the item at the top has a high res thumbnail and most of the picture is chopped off. It only shows the top left corner. The code I am using now is: Code: <a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>"><img style="THUMBNAIL URL HERE" src="http://hucknallwarriors.co.uk/playpng.png" alt="Play the video"></a><br /><b><?php the_title(); ?> Does anyone know a better code that I can specify both the top and bottom layer (the top layer being the play button) and have the bottom layer resized to my request? I did add height="???" and width="???" (replacing ??? with numbers, of course) but that made absolutely no difference at all. Thank you so much for reading this and I hope someone out there has the answer Is that possible? Not nesting tables in a table but rather having a table overlap or cover an existing table? I finally figured out how to add text to my index and now I have another question. In my website template There is Heading 1 and a Heading 2 so my question is how do I delete any sections or headings that I don't need to make it go away on my home page. There is so much and I don't think I need all of it..... Thanks in advance this is my page http://web.vtc.edu/users/cjb06271/CI...nal/order.html there are several things I would like to happen. 1. the right collumn background to be where the right collumn should be(so other links in navbar) 2.The test between the roach pictures to be alligned with the top rather than bottom of pictures (so smaller windows can see) 3. When you size the window smaller than the text, a scroll bar appears, and when you scroll the background no longer exists. If I put it on auto the background will only go as far as the text does. 4. (nice but not required)The cocroachs to be alligned to the left and right of the top bar respectively, and the text in the middle. 5. (nice but not required) the right column background image is being cut in half (as does the top one if you size small enough). any way to make the images ignore the collumns? don't worry about the colors I will be changing them soon I've got a drop down menu (#howto) that works fine in every browser but IE7. The issue: when activated, the menu options appear behind the divs below (#wrapper and #branding). I've tried several z-index combinations, but haven't hit upon one that works. With 13% of my user base still on IE7, I'm stressing out! URL: http://wdm.ca/index_new_dwt.htm HTML Code: <!--Start How To Menu--> <div id="howto" style="top: 3em; right: 0em;"> <img alt="" src="imagesindex/down-triangle.gif" style="float:right; margin-top:0.3em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 1em;" height="10"/> How to...<br /> <hr width="80%" style="text-align: left;" /> <!-- Start How To drop-down menu --> <a href="membership/index_new.htm">become a member</a> ... <a href="contact_new.htm">contact a <abbr title="Western Development Museum">WDM</abbr></a> <!-- End About drop-down menu --> </div> <!--End How To Menu--> CSS Code: body{ background-image:url('imagesindex/background_attempt_fade.jpg');background-position:left;background-repeat:repeat; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; } /* START topper */ #topper{ height:4.5em; width:50em; margin: 20px auto 0 auto; position:relative; z-index:100; } #topper a.contact{ position:absolute; ... display:block; z-index:100; } /* START howto Menu */ #howto{ width:15em; background-color:#FFF; padding-left:2%; float:right; border:thin gray groove; position:absolute; line-height:1.4em; height:1.4em; overflow:hidden; z-index:100; } #howto:hover { height:auto; cursor:pointer; } #howto a { display:block; width:100%; line-height:1.4em; color:#000; text-decoration:none; } #howto a:visited { display:block; width:100%; line-height:1.4em; color:#000; text-decoration:none; } #howto a:hover { color:#000; background:#ddd; } /* END howto Menu */ /* END topper */ #wrapper{ width: 50em; background-color:white; margin: 5px auto 0 auto; border-color:#98B539; border-style:ridge; border-width:thin; z-index:0; } /* Make branding a positioned element, but don't move it */ #branding{ position:relative; border-bottom:thin #98B539 solid; z-index:0; } so i want to have my navigation hover over my content, so when i scroll through my content it flows underneath the navigation.. i am putting the navigation div at z-index:3 and the content at z-index:1 but it wont slide beneath.. help pls here's my site: all css is done on the page so u can see it. http://levisternberg.com/joomla16/ Hi there, I was reviewing the web site of the organization I work for and I noticed that some of the html code is included in the following tags: <!--BeginNoIndex--> and <!--EndNoIndex--> Between these tags there's the page title and the site's navigation included. I have been searching on this subject but I can't seem to find the right answers. I would say you would want your page title and navigation to be indexed by search engines. Or in what cases you wouldn't want it to be indexed? The web site is public and serves mainly an informative purpose. I would be happy with anything that could help me, also resources where I can read about it for example. Kind regards! hey wondered if anyone could explain how on my website I can get the "index of" to show? eg http://rofl.wheresthebeef.co.uk/ cheers! Here's my problem: I'm a subsciber with GeoCities/Yahoo, and had my html files stored. When I try upload my stuff to a certain forum I get a "File Not Found" msg. By looking around I learned that the problem might be the "index.htm" file, which needs to for each subdirectory separately. An example of such a file: http://www.geocities.com/d48uga/dice_tutorial09.html Could u help? Tnx I'm having some problems with a drop down menu appearing 'behind' the content below it even though it is absolutely positioned and has a higher z-index. You can see an example here of what I am talking about. If you look at it in Firefox vs IE7 you will see what I am talking about. Currently the 'body' of my page is broken into 2 columns ('col_left', 'col_right'). Each are floated in their respective direction and each has a relative position. Each also contains a single (for the moment) 'pagelet' div. Eventually this will be a drag & drop app for users to add/edit/remove these various 'pagelets' and position them to their liking on the page. I found that by removing the relative position style from the 'col_left' and 'col_right' elements as well as from the 'pagelet_head' element will make my drop down menu's appear the way they should. Unfortunately all those elements have to have the style of relative position. If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them as I'm a bit perplexed by all this considering the drop downs have a much higher z-index than anything else. All my code is below. Thanks for any help! Code: * { margin: 0; padding: 0; border: none; } body { padding: 15px 20px 0; color: #777; background: #e3e3e3 url(../images/bg_header.gif) repeat-x 0 0; font: 12px "Tahoma", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; Preferably I want benellett.com/index.php to be the "home" page like it would be if it were index.html (like my old website in the link). Thanks a lot! Hey everyone. Wanted your opinions and knowledge on something. I have a friend who is setting up a splash page for her site. However the way her hosting company has things set up she will need to rename her current home page from index.html to something else, and make the splash page the new index.html. She's under the impression that if her current home page is renamed to something other than index it will lose significant value in her website's ranking. I've never heard of that. Her meta tags will be kept intact, and the splash page will have meta tags, and will link to both the home page and sitemap so I don't think search engines will have any problem spidering her site. And I don't really think it will affect her ranking. What do you all think? Am I wrong? I have my main website called index.html, but since i've added php into the code, i've renamed it to index.php. But I also have a forum, which includes another index.php. I'm wanting to have my index.php page to be the page that people see when they come to my website. Is there anyway that it could happen? Do possible somehow open folder/archive were is a index.html. I wan't to run auto index.html or any default .html .php... I want open folder and browse from files. ??? Does anyone know how to use z-index? I would like to know where to use it! Is it in the css file or in the html page? If anyone as any examples that would be great. Thank you for some reason my div containing all the side bar content isn't showing up on my index.html, i don't know whether its because the divs are ordered wrong or the coding is just plain wrong. if you can see what i'm doing wrong please explain index.html coding <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <title>Completely GAGA .com - Your largest source for Lady Gaga</title> <link href="/style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <meta name="keywords" content='lady gaga, music, just dance, interscope records, cherrytree records, konlive, the fame, Just Dance, Colby O Donis, LoveGame, Paparazzi, Poker Face, Eh Eh, Nothing else i can say, beautiful, dirty, rich, fame, honey money, starstruck, flo rida, boys, boys, boys, paper gansta, brown eyes, fashion, i like it rough, summerboy, disco heaven, retro dance freak, again again, fame ball tour, gaga, fashion, technology, space cowboy, redone, dirty ice cream, rock show, shake ure kitty, wonderful, something crazy, wish you were here, no floods, words, red and blue, pictures, videos, download, mp3, mpg, xxx, perez hilton, full album, zip, hdtv, gallery, lyrics, monster, fame monster, kanye west, fame kills, second time around, vma, moonman, mario testino, v magazine, nude, space cowboy, vogue, out.com, ellen von unwerth, Oliver Rauh, sharon gault, David LaChapelle, live, blood, monster heartbeats by lady gaga, heartbeats, bad romance, beyonce, videophone, telephone, monster, teeth, alejandro, the monster ball, dance in the dark, speechless, So Happy I Could Die, monster ball"> </head> <body> <div style="position:absolute; top: 80px; left:36px"> <div style="width:260px; height:1000px"> <h1>LATEST IMAGES //</h1> <h2>Script will go here</h2> <h1>NAVIGATION //</h1> <h2>navigation links will go here </h2> <h1>ELITE AFFILIATES //</h1> <h2> elite affiliates will go here</h2> <h1>SITE INFORMATION //</h1> <h2>Your Webmistress: <a href="http://fallingthroughinfinity.tumblr.com">Emily</a> </br> Web Host: <a href="http://fanstar.org">Fanstar</a> </br> Designed by: <a href="http://fallingthroughinfinity.tumblr.com">Emily</a> </br> Layout Version: 1.0 </br> Created: 16th June 2010 </h2> <h1>DISCLAIMER //</h1> <h2>Completely - Gaga . Is there a quirk in terms of the way index.html is rendered in Firefox that anyone knows of? Thanks. Hello forum, I have a very simple question which I can't solve: My html code looks something like this (in index.html with a directory of 'next/' which has the file index.html: HTML Code: <html><head /><body> <a href="next/">Continue</a> </body></html> Then when the link is clicked, it gets a permission error (meaning the browser can't find anything in the directory). Why is this? Shouldn't it automatically get into the index.html? thanks in advance, drmota |
