HTML - Xhtml Doctype Problem
Hello
I have this weird problem with the following simple code HTML Code: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <html lang='en' xml:lang='en' xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml' dir="ltr"> <head> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/style.css"> <script src="includes/js/general.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-latest.js" type="text/javascript"></script> </head> Fire fox and chrome thinks that everything is fine, On internet explorer the stylesheet is not working When I take off the DOCTYPE it works in explorer as well what is my problem ? Thanks Lior Similar TutorialsI have virtually no understanding of doctype. I've never used it before, and I've never noticed a difference on any of my sites between different browsers or old and new browsers. But, recently, I've been trying to get up to standards on everything. All the tutorials and forums I've read about it say to use Transitional if you're not sure, and then they go on to say stuff about which version of HTML you're using. I really don't know exactly what XHTML is, but I do know (or at least think I know) that I always close out everything proper (<br /> instead of <br>, <img src="..." /> instead of <img src="...">, etc.), I always keep everything in lower case, and I always put properties in quotes. Is that the ONLY difference between HTML and XHTML? If so, should I use a Strict doctype instead of Transitional? My site looks fine on Mozilla, IE, Safari, and Opera, but w3.org keeps saying my pages are invalid, and it always points out my closing tags. Here's what I'm working on, in case anyone wants to see it http://www.gizburgduck.com/main/index.html I am combining 2 sets of code for my new website. I am combining my nold stuff with a piece of my new website. One piece is written in xhtml doctype traditional and the other is in xhtml strict. naturally I either lose the old part or the new parts. Is there a way to easily convert the traditional to strict, so the whole darn thing works right? Hi all, I have a HTML document, with two images one below the other e.g. <img id="Image1" src="web/images/en/1.jpg" alt="Image"/><br/><img id="Image1" src="web/images/en/1.jpg" alt="Image"/> To make my doc XHTML compliant, i am adding following doctype declaration in my doc: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//WAPFORUM//DTD XHTML Mobile 1.0//EN" "http://www.wapforum.org/DTD/xhtml-mobile10.dtd"> But because of the above declation, there is a minor gap observed between the images, if i remove the Doctype declaration, the space disappears. Can somebody help me on this, is there any workaround to resolve the same or what could be the probable reason for this behavior. Hi there, I m using dom with css in my web page. Is this vaild using w3c standards? Any help in this issue would be appreciable. Thanks in advance Well, this is how it started - I'm using XHTML strict but by accident I placed the doctype after the <html> tag. I've now finished the website and realised the error, so I moved it above <html>. The problem is that now in IE it looks like this: http://img187.imagevenue.com/img.php..._122_350lo.jpg but in Firefox, it renders perfectly like this: http://img150.imagevenue.com/img.php..._122_842lo.jpg As you can see in IE it produces a big gap between the logo and the login form. Edit Figured it out - a very stupid mistake I was floating the logo to the left and the form to the right but I'd set the logo div's width at 25% and the form div's width at 100%. Just out of curiosity - anyone know why this error wouldn't show until the doctype was enforced and why it didn't show in firefox? I have been creating a website with Javascript. When the user rolls over an image button, the button will glow and when the user presses on the button it will change to and image of the button being pressed. This program has been working with at least 6 buttons but the current button i'm working on stops doing what the previous buttons did and I would like to know why. I copied the codes exactly the same as the previous buttons, changed the image picture and provided the correct links to each image but somehow it just stops working. Thank you for your help (: -=Example of the codes=- Button 1: <a href="'test2.htm" onMouseDown="pressButton('chatBtn');return true;" onMouseOver="overButton('chatBtn');return true;" onMouseOut="releaseButton('chatBtn');return true;"><img name=chatBtn src="images/chat.png" border="0" alt="Chat" /></a> Button 2: <a href='test.htm' onMouseDown="pressButton('backBtn');return true;" onMouseUp="overButton('backBtn');return true;" onMouseOut="releaseButton('backBtn');return true;"><img name=backBtn src="images/back.png" border="0" alt="Back" /></a> Javascript code: // Preloading Images if (document.images) { chatBtn_up = new Image(); chatBtn_up.src="images/chat.png"; chatBtn_down= new Image(); chatBtn_down.src="images/chatPress.png"; chatBtn_hover = new Image(); chatBtn_hover.src="images/chatHover.png"; backBtn_up = new Image(); backBtn_up.src="images/back.png"; backBtn_down= new Image(); backBtn_down.src="images/backPress.png"; backBtn_hover = new Image(); backBtn_hover.src="images/backHover.png"; } // Event Handlers for button function pressButton(btName) { if (document.images) eval('document.'+btName+'.src='+btName+'_down.src'); } function releaseButton(btName) { if(document.images) eval('document.'+btName+'.src='+btName+'_up.src'); } function overButton(btName) { if (document.images) eval('document.'+btName+'.src='+btName+'_hover.src'); } This stuff in red seems to be sorted now, but I still have the problem with my php page [I've been developing a portfolio which is viewable at timdonaldson.com . I started making in with a HTML page, but to get the thumbnails to pop up like they do I had to transfer it into an xHTML page. I did this but blue aspects that I had styled went pear shaped and I'm not sure where I went wrong. There are horizontal lines made from 1px high div tags that don't show at all and small italic text that should be blue shows up black. Can anyone lend me some ideas on how to fix this? A standard HTML version of the page can be seen at timdonaldson.com/index2.html. I have a couple of other problems to... In the thumbnail gallery, some images don't link in OSX firefox, they don't have a problem in safari though. the 4th image from the left on the top row is like this.] And when you write in the contact form and send me an email, the php sends you to a thank you page, the text on this page doesn't want to be styled no matter what, I can manage to put it into a div container and centre it but that is about it. changing fonts or sizes with css doesn't do anything. I cant get my head around these couple of problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated! My web site www.wayneactorscommunitytheatre.org is having a problem with the navigation on some computers. Dong a mouse over on the header brings up a drop down list for navigation. Doing a mouse over these brings up others. On some computers this doesn't work and users are unable to connect to the lists that come up. It works great on a couple of system I have but two users have complained to me that on their XP internet Explorer it doesn't work. Anyone have any suggestion to how I can fix this? The xtml and css pages verify and I am at a loss as to what the problem is. Hey all. I'm having a problem with my website's image links. For some reason there are orange bars around all of the images that are in link tags, and when you click on them they turn purple. They're very tacky and I have no idea why they're there. Here's my website's URL: www.populous3.co.nr Here's the code for one of the pictures: Code: <a href="images.htm"><img src="/images/images.jpg" /></a> Any help will be appreciated! Thanks, Suleiman Hi. My entire site is 100% XHTML1.1. Except for some new code I added which causes errors in validation. the code is HTML Code: <a href="http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/" onclick="window.open('http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/trurl_pagecontent?lp=en_it&url='+encodeURIComponent(location.href));return false;" title="Translate to Italian"><img title="Italian" src="http://geekimo.com/licons/it.png" alt="Italian" /></a> I understand maybe CDATA islands can help with this? or making it external? but I have no idea how to do that with it having html code in there too.. I don't know if you can surround it in CDATA tags. There are other lines of code too, exactly the same except have different languages. Any help would be awesome! I just got my code to validate under the strict doctype ... but once I changed the doctype, Firefox started rendering something different, so that now there's a black gap below the header bar. i checked by putting the transitional doctype back in, and with that it looks perfect. ... but IE doesn't render it differently when i put in the strict doctype. so what's going on here?!?! Which one is better? XHTML STRICT 1.0 or XHTML 1.1 <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> this line seems to be at war with firefox. for some unknown reason my banner has a space between the lower body (it shouldn't). It is fine in IE and fine if the above line is not included. It seems to be adding some sort of padding into the table cells where the images are, somehow because of the domument type. ---------- Anyone have any solutions? LINK: http://uniden.zzl.org/ Again it is FINE in IE, but not if FF. HTML is Valid according to W3c Validator. Thanks in advance I have a doctype problem on my site which I cannot get rid of... Im using utf-8 have tried the below: !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML+RDFa 1.0//EN" "http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/DTD/xhtml-rdfa-1.dtd"> --> !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML+RDFa 1.0//EN" "http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/DTD/xhtml-rdfa-1.dtd"> !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> Many things are happening and I have read a lot of docs handling this... What do you suggest that I do? (Hmmm, - I need dansih characters... ) (In mysql working on the site I cannot see the correct characters... A workaround are being used...) Regards, Frank When I add a doctype it completely ruins my whole page layout. How can i fix this? Without: it fits my whole page and looks nice. With doctype: it squishes everything to the top. Help please. How improtant is the doctype tag? I am trying to teach myself html and am trying to figure out when to use what doctype. DOCTYPE basically tell the web browser what to expect when interpreting the html doc b/c html has been revised over the years, is that correct? Can someone please help me understand how to properly use the doctype tag and what is smart choice/ example of a specific doctype tag is and the reasoning behind why 'this' doctype tag is a smarter choice than an alternate doctype tag? Thank you! -Matt H. Hi simple question. I'm setting a background color on a div and when I put the Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> the background color disappears?
