HTML - What Knowledge Do I Need To Build A Professional Webiste?
Hello all,
I noticed there are more than a handful of different scripting languages, markup languages, and many different methods to building a modern day website. If im starting from scratch and I would like to build a professional website such as yahoo (homepage), craigslist, e-commerce, etc... A website that allows users to create their own accounts and such, what should I need to know? Is learning HTML + CSS really a good starting point? Is HTML, CSS, CGI + Perl sufficient to having the tools needed to create a good website? Realisticly, do professional web-designers really sit down and write code to create a website or do they use some fancy third-party application that basically does all the work for them? I have always wondered about these questions any help will be greatly appreciated. Similar TutorialsThis list shows the optimal dimensions for a website to target for at various resolutions: 600 x 300 (640 x 480 Maximized) 760 x 420 (800 x 600 Maximized) 795 x 470 (832 x 764 Maximized) 955 x 600 (1024 x 768 Maximized) It's a list which Dreamweaver also uses. I was wondering how they came up with such a list. For example: I've taken a screenshot of a browser window. 1024x768, maximized with a right scrollbar. When I place a 955x600 graphic on top of that it fits nicely between the top address bar and the bottum status bar. But when I also place it against the right scrollbar, that leaves about 52 pixels on the left. So what is it that takes about that width they might be taking into account to end up with a with of 955? A typical IE/FF sidebar is much wider than that, so that can't be it. Not that I intend to use it, but I was curious what it could be cause this 955x600 for a maximised 1024x768 window is mentioned quite often. How do professional websites update all of their pages at once? For instance I see that a website has change the navbar in every page, (1000+ pages) At the moment, I first make my home page, then I copy&paste it and change the text etc, but if I wanted to change the navbar, I would be needing to change every single page 1 by 1. I have a 10-day window to buy a professional web design software package. Cost is no object. Currently 1) using hosting site for my web pages and 2) HTML (NVu & Kompozer) to develop e-books for publication. Need a combo WSYISWYG/HTML to be able to "see" what I'm doing. Not a professional web designer but eventually will need to learn how to self-manage my web site. Dreamweaver appears to be the preferred software of choice. Would a better option be one of the Adobe Creative Suites that includes Dreamweaver? At this point, my web site is fairly clean and simple and I'm not one for bells & whistles. Adobe Creative Suites include many features that I'm not sure I would use. But since the money is available should I invest now in anticipation of potential future use? Any recommendations would be helpful. Take a look at my site. Just in the making. www.ringgoldhs.com I want my navigation bar to be horizantal. It is made of individual "image links" Quick help please? All, Sorry if this seems too stupid. This is my first question to the forum. If I use Paypal to create a BuyNow button, I paste the html code into my webpage. When I preview the webpage the link is just dead. Is this normal? How do I know the link works? Any suggestions? Hi guys In an effort to have a div with a semi transparent background, I have made two divs - one with the transparency, and another to place over the top for my content. I can't get my overlay div to position correctly - it seems that ie and FF start off placing the div from different positions. The page is at www.popbeatblues.com.au/rw/artist_1.php Also, making the overlay have an absolute position has chnaged the appearance of it's content divs too. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Cheers Shaun Hi, basically i want to open an online clothing store via bigcartel. If i buy a site they said i can add my own html to change the layout etc. I don't know if it would be best to hire someone, or if i would be able to do it myself. Thanks for your help Hello, I want to build button for menu on a site. Each button is made from 'div'. When button is in release state (not pressed), the border-style of its div must be "outset". When button is in actioned state (pressed), the border-style of its div must be "inset". The code for release state may be: -------------------------- <a href="index.html"> <div id="menuHome" style="position:absolute; left:0px;top:0px;width:150px;height:20px; background-color:#FF6600; border-styleutset; border-color: #FF6600; border-width:3px;" align="center">Home </div> </a> -------------------------- The 'menuHome' is the button for home link and I make the link to this div and so on. My problem is to set the 'inset' property for border-style of 'menuHome' div when I click on this button to give effect of pressed button. Thank you. Hey, I need to make an squre which would be fully compatible with CSS1 only - I've it with CSS2 or 3, but appication which is using these html templates is not compatible with those css (border of div is not visible etc), so I have to to it by some "old" kind of way. Square should be like 18x18px with nothing inside - just thin black border (1px). Let me know if there is any way which won't be <table... Thanks in advance! Today's websites, most people focus on building them with more advanced languages such as PHP & MySQL, am I right? Do people still build full websites using only HTML and CSS? The only HTML/CSS sites I really see nowadays are usually old informational static websites that never change. I'd like to know 2 things please, which is FASTER, using templates and modifying to design sites or building from scratch? Next, which is BETTER, using templates or building from scratch? I just finished with basic index.html page for my website. It will have 20 or more subpages - they will all use same design. I don't want manually change all the links on every page if one day I add menu link or something like that So any ideas how to do that automatically in Dreamweaver CS3? Is it wrong to use tables to build your website's layout? For example, on one column you'd have the navigation, and on the other column you'd have the main website content. Is this method wrong?
