HTML - Site Layout, Frames, Css... Need Clarifications
Hi everyone.
I have a website (this one) which I made starting from a template. I modified it to suit, and learned basic html as I went, but I foresee a problem. The site is currently made up of a small enough number of pages that, when I have to change something in the left menu, or update the copyright notice on the bottom, or do any modification that doesn't involve the actual contents, I can do it in all the html files in a more or less automatic way with a text replacer and have done with it. This is, however, not an efficient solution, and requires reuploading every html page. Now, consider for a moment the layout of this site. There's a left frame with a menu, a top one with tabs, and the main center one with the actual contents. Clicking a link on the left will open the linked-to html page in the main frame. I would like my site to have the appearance it has now, with the frame layout of the other one. This way when changing the menu I'd only have to change and upload one html file, and I could write content without worrying about the rest of the page. I could just adapt the html from the example site and incorporate it in my own, but I've been told HTML frames are an inelegant and inefficient way of doing this, that they sometimes mess up the visualization, that they make it harder for search engines to index you and that I should do it with CSS instead (of which I know not a thing). I'd like your opinion on this before I start potentially wasting time adapting html. Also, whichever way I proceed, I would like to change the colour of the spacer and scroll bars from the ugly standard windows-grey to the violet/blue background colour of my site. Can this be done at all, and if so how? Thanks. Similar TutorialsHi guys, I have a question... I was helped make a basic site...but i was wondering if i could make it so that the side bars and top stay as one page, but the center section, different pages so i dont have to keep updating the news on every single page each time. Here is the site: http://KeyGaming.no-ip.com Is it possible? And if so, how? Currently my website uses frames and no css. I need to update it, but I'm in a huge time crunch!!! (And don't know css and only know very very basic HTML) I need my website to be functional (not in limbo) by next weekend, so it either has to stay how it is now (frames & older HTML) or be totally done by then. Is there anywhere that I can get help to do this automatically instead of waiting until later when I have way more time to learn it myself (that changes your code easily/automatically), or super awesome people who love HTML and will do it for me? It's a pretty simple/basic website and I would be SO so SO appreciative. hi there, i have a last.fm playlist listed on my shop: www.brewrecords.net/shop however whenever you go to a new page it obviously reloads and resets itself. how do i make it so that it continues playinging throughout the site when people are browsing different sections? I've been told frames could possibly cure this but i have no clue what they are or what coding to put any help will be well appreciated! cheers! Hi Guys, I have been approached by a company for a job which im not 100% sure of a solution on. There is a company already set up in Greece and they have a site up and running already. A new comapny is partnering with them in the UK and they want to set up a UK version of the site. The problem i have is the UK company need to have there contact details and other information on the main nav links and the greece site needs there information. before i go any further here is the site and i have split it into 2 frames on the image to help you understnad what i need to try and acheive. http://www.renttheweb.com/med/index.html Frame 1 at the top has a static navigation so this can be edited on teh UK version. Frame 2 at teh bottom is run through a CMS so teh links are not static. What i need to try and acheive for the UK site is the following. The information and links in frame one needs to be controlled by the UK comapny. The information in frame 2 needs to be controlled by the Greece comapny. Is there anyway to set up 2 frames on the UK site. Frame 1 will be set up so the UK company can control teh links and information. Frame 2 would need to display wants stored on the Greece version. I've been looking at this for a few days now with both the UK comapny and Greece company and were trying to come up with a solution so that the UK site has all UK information from the top navigation and the Greece version has all the information relevent to them. The idea with breaking the site up this way is so that the UK site get the contacts about the properties if people find the UK site. Any ideas or other suggestions or if anyone knows straight away this would not be possible for any reason please let me know. CC_DESIGN Well i decided to come up with a new site layout. I took my site down, www.caspersmusicvideos.com, because personal issues and im ready to get it back up. Any ideas on how i should do this? One thing i know i want is a navbar that when you hover over like Music videos it has a drop down box with like a list of genreas you can view them by. ANy other ideas ....i suck at css so i might have to get someone to do that for me Hello all! This is my first website, and of all the languages I've had to start learning to produce it, HTML is by far the most infuriating. My site is www.B3-Office.com and the issue is the layout. It is completely wrong on every page. If you look in the source it should show that my top nav bar is set to be only 94 px in width per cell (10 cells), slightly larger than some of the text therein. The "Contact" text is supposed to be far left. Then the rest of the site, the pages are just all messed up in formatting, looking nothing like it does in my WYSISWYG program (DreamWeaver CS4). I have 4 pages in this format: home, contact, aboutus, and privacy. None of which are working properly. HELP! What am I missing? I would also appreciate your feedback on my work. Thanks so much!!! Hi there, I have a table layout on the main page of site I'm working on, and have one row with two cells. The cell on the left contains a php include page which auto updates with news, however, as the news gets longer and the cell container auto resizes to fit the height..it also messes with the height of the cell on the right, leaving empty spaces (the black space right under "recruitment status") I'm stumped as to how to deal with is, any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks the site: http://guild-paragon.com/indexframe edit: decided to put an iframe in there to hold the height, there's prob better alternatives out there though Hi. My problem is this... When I zoom in on my site to see it more clearly in close up, it is behaving very strangely. The content in the RH column starts overlapping the menu, which is in the centre column, and positions part of itself behind the menu buttons. The link for the trial version of the site is: http://www.advancewebsolutions.co.uk/commonthread/ I'm not sure whether this is a HTML or CSS problem, but I'd be grateful if anyone could spot what is causing this problem. Many thanks in antiicpation... I've heard many times "don't use frames, there is better ways to accomplish it", and I was wondering, is this just referring to "invisible" frames, or any frames? For example, look at Kingdom of Loathing. They use frames (or what appears to be frames) and I can't see how they could successfully make that site without. If I had to have all the screens scroll as one rather than separate, and couldn't resize when I needed to, it would be extremely annoying. So, frames are bad, or just the invisible ones? I am wondering if it is possible to create an INDEX.HTML to redirect to another website? I would like it to display the redirected site, but if possible keep to the original address.. e.g. A site named www.mysite.com, with an INDEX.HTML to redirect to www.othersite.com, which displays OTHERSITE with www.mysite.com in the address bar. Hope I explained ok, any responce would be much appricated! Thanks! Hi I need a page that has six eqaually sized frames displaying different sites with a scroll bar on each and no border. How would i do this Thanks Hey, I'm a html noob building a website for html. I have frames set up so that it is 3 columns. In the middle column there are three rows (Header, menu and content respectively). The problem I'm having is, although I've made the frames so that they can't be dragged to alter their size, when the user resizes the window the frames get resized and all the content (including banner, menu buttons etc.) get cut off or pushed into "no mans land". Id like one of the following to be possible: - How do i make the window so it opens at a specific size, and cant be resized. - Or if the window has to be resizable, can i set a minimum point the frames can be resized to. - Or how do i make the content so that it doenst go to the s***house. - Or how do i make the frames so they aren't resized when the window is... Bellow is a picture and my coding so you can see what's wrong: (in the picture you can see the banner being cut off, the buttons havent been cut off yet as the window is still big). <body properties="fixed"> <frameset border="3" bordercolor="#000000" rows="100%"> <frameset cols="20%,60%,20%"> <frame src="backdrop.html" name="lbackdrop" noresize scrolling="no"> <frameset rows="25%,10%,65%"> <frame src="header.html" name="header" noresize scrolling="no"> <frame src="menu2.html" name="menu" noresize scrolling="no" <frame src="main.html" name="mainwindow" noresize scrolling="no" </frameset> <frame src="backdrop.html" name="rbackdrop" noresize scrolling="no"> </frameset> </frameset> </body> Thanks in advance look i know that frames are bad but i have a good cause to use them XD all im wondering is - "For every one of the frames that i use, in the source file of the frame will i need to put the standard tags e.g. doctype, html, head, body, meta, title or can i just start with the code and it will work????" never used frames before so this is why im asking??? personally i think i will need to put in the standard tags because frames work differently to the PHP include function which practically copy and pastes the code into the file where you put your include function if im not mistaken??? Anyways thanks in advance Marcus =] so I am making a new webpage at http://www.geocities.com/manic.panicd I am wondering what the link code is for frames. When i click on "you" or "site", etc...I want it to open up in the main frame part of my layout. For an example of how im running into trouble. Check my webbie and click on the mini piece of lined paper in the "The Girl" section. How do i link properly? hye, i just want to ask. using frames is secure or not?and how to fix it as secure. hopefully someone can answer my question, i really curious to know about that. tq~ Hey, http://www.artistrichardcook.co.uk/src/ - here is the start to a website I am making for my art college which exists of two frames. A left (with the links) and the main frame (with the content). Simple. However, due to it being a frame and the obviously long list of links, when my browser is smaller than usual you can't see the bottom of the links. I know I could add a scrollbar to the frame but it looks pretty awful. My screen is a 17" laptop and the number of people at college viewing this will have smaller laptop screens and this is my problem. Basically, was there anyway to make both the left frame scroll as you scrolled the main frame as in linked? So the scrollbar would exist for both the frames rather than just one or the other? Sorry if this doesn't make sense but I'm not sure how else to put it. I would appreciate any help Thanks, Rich Lock n delete. My net is stuffing up n it double posted. Please read my other post... Hello, I was just learned about frames and I just get a little bit curious why not so many websites use frames, is it, like, not great? Can you tell me pros and cons about it? Thank you. |
