HTML - Auto-updating Index.html With Links Based On New Files
Hello, I'm trying to create a little page that auto updates itself whenever new files are added. The system is layered such that I have the top level index.html file, then in the same directory, I can add new folders that contain other index.html files. What I want to do is have the top level index.html file pick up every sub directory, grab the name from the directory, and then create a link to that directory's index.html file and then display it in the top level index.html file.
So what I have right now is this: HTML Code: <body> <a href="myFirstDirectory/index.html">myFirstDirectory.html</a> </body> There is other stuff, but this is the part I need help with. As you can see, I also want the name that is displayed to be the same name as the directory. I do not know how to automate this if I have other folders in there like directory2, directory3, etc. Can anyone show me an example of how to do this or walk me through it? Thanks in advance. Similar TutorialsHello, I have the page "index.html" in my root folder, as well as another "index.html" page in a subdirectory. I feel like a moron for not being able to figure this out on my own, but here goes: How do I create a link from my subdirectory index.html page to the one in my root folder? Any help is much appreciated. OK, I have an expandable menu that, when someone clicks on an image, it takes them to a certain page. The code is currently: HTML Code: p = new createPanel('al','Account Info'); p.addButton('images/menu/story.jpg','Story','parent.main.location="background.php"'); o.addPanel(p); I have about 12 of these links, and all the others in the menu work fine. With this particular one, I changed the "parent.main.location" At first, the line was 'parent.main.location="story.php"'); but I decided to change it. I've uploaded all the changes, and yet this link STILL accesses 'story.php' instead of 'background.php' like it is supposed to. This is the best part: I deleted the page 'story.php' off my server. Even after me doing that, the link continues to call up that page. I have cleared my cache, cookies and Firefox's "personal data" collection. Also, there are no other pages on my site that even look like 'story.php'. Anyone know why a line of code specifically calling for a different page would keep pulling up an old page - especially a page that has been deleted? Thanks a ton, Aaron I use a program (Guardian) to send me notifications when an error occurs on my site (404, 403 etc.) These notices contain the URL causing the error and the referring URL. Lately I have been getting numerous notifications with URLs to directories without index files (On a side note, these URLs also contain within them, urls to other sites. I assume this is some spammer technique and I am not too concerned about this in this post but if someone can shed some light on how/why they (the spammers) do this I would appreciate it.) My purpose in posting here is to find out about the use of index files in directories. I have read that this is a good idea, but I have yet to hear why except that in case someone navigates to the URL of the directory rather than the actual page URL, then they will not get a 403 error message, but this seems like a rather weak reason to me. Is there another reason? SEO reason? Technical reason? If I find good reason to do this, is it enough to just put a blank index file in each directory? If so why? What purpose does it serve (aside from thwarting the spammers doing what I described above.) Thanks in advance for your help. Good morning... I have a bunch of links that open pdf files publish on a server. These files are overwritten with the latest data every 30 minutes... the challenges i have is to open the latest and greatest when i click on the link..... I do have a meta refresh code in the head of my page, it look like this: <head> <meta http-equiv="Cache-Control" content="no-cache"> each one of my links look like this: <a href="http://myweb.com/report/reportinpdf.pdf"; >Report name herer</a> Any ideas on making sure that i open the latest and greatest instead of whatever is in the cookies....???? (i am assuming that is why the files is not updating...) Thanks in advance... Seabass I need to update a field based off date. What I want to do is have a hidden date field that would then add to another field to give me a number based off the date. I did this in excel with this formala: =(TODAY()-A4)+B4 In A4 I have my date entered. In b4 I have the number I want to add to the date. The answer is then displayed in whatever cell I put this formula in. I need to do the same thing in HTML. Any help appreciated. OK it said be specific so here it is. I am a first time html'er infact I am just now in an html/css class, the downside is my honors organization wanted a website this week. I was able to build something novice like @ http://www.asu-bap.com what I noticed is when I use images or a css stylesheet on the index page everything works grandiose. However, when I reference the same style sheet on other pages such as join.html or announcements.html it would not use the style sheet. I got really irritated and just embedded the css into each page individually. Think that my code was just that bad and i had nowhere to go for help. Then... I tried to do an image on my calendar.html, and i had the same issue... I even tried (as I had with the css file) to create a brand new directory called calendar and putting the img in there. To no avail, it still would not pull up the image. I am like 90% sure my code is right for the image so then I found this website and decided to try to get help here. Here is my code for the calendar (its a word doc converted I just added links and img), I have everything uploaded to root directory. Please help. And if you fix what could have been my css referencing issue, I wills end you cookies! Code: <STYLE TYPE="text/css" MEDIA=screen> <!-- body { padding-left: 11em;} ul.navbar { list-style-type: none; padding: 0; margin: 0; position: absolute; top: 2em; left: 1em; width: 9em } ul.navbar li { background: white; margin: 0.5em 0; padding: 0.3em; } ul.navbar a { text-decoration: none } a:link { color: blue } a:visited { color: purple } address { margin-top: 1em; padding-top: 1em; border-top: thin dotted } --> </STYLE> <!-- Site navigation menu --> <div class="style1"> <ul class="navbar"> <li><a href="http://www.asu-bap.com/">Home</a> <li><a href="http://www.asu-bap.com/forums/">Forums</a> <li><a href="http://www.asu-bap.com/announcements.html/">Announcements</a> <li><a href="http://www.asu-bap.com/join.html/">How to Join Beta Alpha Psi</a> <li><a href="http://www.asu-bap.com/calendar.html/">Calendar of Events</a> </ul> <img src="1_BAP_color.jpeg" /> I there. I'm trying to buid a page that once selected an item from a list, auto-reads files in a folder and and sort them in a table, with a calendar look. The files are being feed to the folder with the name "ZON YY-MM-DD.gif" "PSI20 YY-MM-DD.gif" "JMAR YY-MM-DD.gif" i.e. "MONDAY" | "TUESDAY" | "WEDNESDAY" | "THURSDAY" | "FRIDAY" | -------------------------------------------------------------------- YY-MM-DD | YY-MM-DD | YY-MM-DD | YY-MM-DD | YY-MM-DD | .... .... .... -------------------------------------------------------------------- 08-10-20 | 08-10-21 | 08-10-22 | 08-10-23 | 08-10-24 | -------------------------------------------------------------------- 08-10-13 | 08-10-14 | 08-10-15 | 08-10-15 | 08-10-16 | -------------------------------------------------------------------- Until now for each week I was coding in manually the new row for each item, but it's a pain changing the date and item. <tr> <td><div align="center">07-07-2008</div></td> <td><div align="center">08-07-2008</div></td> <td><div align="center">09-07-2008</div></td> <td><div align="center">10-07-2008</div></td> <td><div align="center">11-07-2008</div></td> </tr> <tr> <td><div align="center"> <p><img src="ZON 08-07-08.gif" width="220" height="129" /></p> </div></td> <td><div align="center"> <p><img src="ZON 08-07-08.gif" width="220" height="129" /></p> </div></td> <td><div align="center"> <p><img src="ZON 09-07-08.gif" width="220" height="129" /></p> </div></td> <td><div align="center"> <p><img src="ZON 10-07-08.gif" width="220" height="129" /></p> </div></td> <td><div align="center"> <p><img src="ZON 11-07-08.gif" width="220" height="129" /></p> </div></td> </tr> How can I do this automatically? Doing it with FOR's WHILE's and IF's seems very troublesome. Any code or pointers are welcome. BLopes Hi guys, got a question about a html issue. ill explain the situation, 2 persons publish htm files, this is automated, each html files is unique, so lets say person one creates indexa.htm and person two creates indexb.htm I need a general index who refer to either indexa or indexb, with the rule that it should pick the latest one changed or the newest one. Is this possible in pure html ?? Thanks in advance, Nim. I finally figured out how to add text to my index and now I have another question. In my website template There is Heading 1 and a Heading 2 so my question is how do I delete any sections or headings that I don't need to make it go away on my home page. There is so much and I don't think I need all of it..... Thanks in advance Hi all I'm not exactly super profficient with HTML but I kinda know what I'm doing. I'm making a html document for the place that i work which stors quite large video files ona server (in the order of 1.5 to 2gig). I have the HTML document on another server, however. Basicaly what i want to do (and this is a very simplified version of my goal but its where the problem lies) is to have links from that HTML to the video files on the video server. So you click the link and it asks you if you want to save it or open it etc.. So this seems fairly simple... i've just got a <a href="\\videoservername\vod$\video_library\example.mpg">Click Here</a> which works but INCREDIBLY SLOWLY. I mean i knew it would take 5 minutes to copy the videos across... which it does if i link to the directory of the video rather than the video itself. So thats all good. But when its linked directly to the video file it takes a good 15 minutes between the 'Save or open' box and the 'where do you want to save' box. Once it does come up it saves in about 5 minutes like expected. I just dont get why it takes so long for the 'where would you like to save' to come up. If anyone knows a way around this or could even exaplain why its like this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Adam I think there is a simple fix for this...but I can't think of it. My client has an existing site (not very well designed and no templates) with hundreds of static pages. She wants me to create a new home (index.htm) page that is just a simple landing page where people can choose to enter her website OR visit the store to purchase products. Simple enough...but, now all of the 100's of static pages have the link Home=index.htm on them. I want people to type in the URL: www.mysite.com (for example) and land on the new page to choose to go to the site to learn about her and her music OR go to the store to shop. Once they are in the site, however, and hit the home link, I don't want them to go 'all the way back out' to the new landing page. I want them to go back to the 'old' index.htm page (or her current home page), without having to change the index.htm links on those 100's of pages. Is there an easy fix for this, using a naming convention for the home page? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am a bit stumped on this one. Hi, Wondering what are some good ways to restrict access to files / links for a visitor until they have registered their details... for example, when a user tries to access a certain file from a download page, they click on the file link >> I want to send them to a registration page (a simple form), and - only once they've filled it out and submitted their details - to send them back to the download page with unrestricted access to that file (or any other resitrcted files). Any suggestions / pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Perhaps it's just me, but I recently noticed this and I'm curious as to how it works. I don't even know if this is the right forum for this though. Take a look at these two pictures and websites. http://www.slidedeck.com/examples/reddal http://www.friendgiftr.com/ If you notice in the picture and the actual website, the first example does not show a tiny dotted border around the link that you click. But on the second site, clicking on a link will have that link surrounded by the thin dotted border. At least that's how it is for me on the latest version of Firefox and Internet Explorer. Is this something browser based? Or what? Why the inconsistency? This problem is simple in need, but a little complex to explain. What I am looking for is a way to create a flowchart or a sitemap of each HTML file rather than my whole site. I need a program or application that will do this for me automatically instead of having to create this manually. I have all ready tried Visio, but it does not do what I desire. Specifically, I have multiple anchor links within each HTML file. These anchor links point to other 'panels' on my page. Within those 'panels' might exist additional links - external or internal. At some point, those links will end at a 'panel'. I need a way to visually show where each anchor link is going, where those links came from (which panel they originated from), and if any of them are 'broken'. I have attached two files that may explain this better. The flowchart_example.jpg shows exactly what I require (more or less). I really just need the boxes (labeled Panel 00, Panel 01, etc.), how each connects to the other based off of links that are in the HTML file, and eventually show where the links end (no more links in the panel). I do not need the '1 Click' or '2 Clicks' to show up. Those can be manually added later. The an_example.html file shows an HTML file that has the anchor links and external links that would need to show up in the flowchart. This HTML file more or less mirrors what I am looking for in the flowchart_example.jpg file. When I refer to Panel 00, that is the top of the page, after the title and black line (where the script actually begins). The user must start at the top. They cannot skip around to other panels. This is why a visual flowchart would be quite helpful. Additionally, the links at the top (scripts, reference, transfers, etc.) along with the top and back buttons on each panel should be ignored when creating the flowchart. Any information or assistance in finding an application or a way to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. I am still new to the web page world, but the website I originally created (in japanese) was passed on to a programmer. He did a lot of "upgrades" to the site so he says, but he left. Now I am in charge again of re-modeling the site. The problem is I am trying to figure out why there are so many dead links. I have looked up and down the server, but can't find anything. Ok before I confuse anyone else here is what I am talking about. For example this page that I originally made : Code: http://www.discoveryfirm.com/tokushu/index.html cannot be found but if I take of the end: http://www.discoveryfirm.com/tokushu/ the page is there. Now I am trying to fix a lot of dead links, but I cannot figure out what the programmer did to the site. I am still new to all the high-tech features in the web world. Could somebody please explain. i just started working on addicted2ally.com, and for some reason, my index.html is showing the text of the html instead of well, doing it lol helppp!? Hey there, I started html/css a few days since I wanted to make my own website for my own Minecraft server and I've ran into a little problem with it. I tried putting 2 videos aswell as a paragraph of text on the front page and well... the video at the bottom of the page was well below the white line. Is there something that I need to do so the page updates and expands? My html and css is below.
