HTML - New Website/host, Advice And Help Needed Please!
Hi all,
Please excuse all of my ignorance. I am teaching myself (and being taught by nice people like yourselves) on html and website building. Mods, I was unsure as to where to put this and apologize if I am in the wrong section. This will be a semi long post as I have lots of questions for all of you. I will organize it into sections in hopes to get a more detailed response. The Background I have experience with basic html and have (until now) only used free web servers with web site building tools and just used html for templates and buttons etc. I run my own fish/aquarium supply business and wanted my own .com name instead of a sub-domain. So my better half bought me a a domain and basic hosting package from godaddy.com -I am running OS X on a powerbook via safari and firefox. -My host is at godaddy.com -I am confused and in need of help. The Problem Well, so far for me being "good" with websites what a joke that was. Without a web site editor software like the free sub-domains come with I am lost. I understand a html editor would be the best and easiest way to make pages for my site? -My main problem is I cannot get html documents onto my website. I understand I should be using FTP? I have tried with no success, I am unsure as to which folder to even move the page to, I dont even know which one is my home page *Blushes* -I am very new to FTP and would like some advice for the best way to transfer HTML to a site. -I also dont know how to name the page i.e.: mypage.com/AboutUs.html (How do call the page "about us") -I have tried looking around on go daddy for some answers and havent found much info besides it telling me to use FTP to upload files. I must not have done it right because i am still getting the "oops this site isnt up yet" message. If you couldnt tell I need a lot of help. I really just need to know how to get my first few pages up and running....I just dont know how to get the files from where they are on my computer to my site, since the package I have doesnt have a website builder/software. If your willing to educate me, Im willing to learn. All help is appreciated and feel free to laugh at my ignorance. Im doing my best. Drew P.s. Do you need the name of my site in order to help me? If so, Am I allowed to even post the name of my site for reference purposes? Similar TutorialsHi, I was wondering if anyone in the forum new the answer to a question that I am trying to resolve? On google, for certain companies, it comes up with the link, the description, the the web address, however, some companies have certain pages underneath that displayed also. Does anyone know how it is done? Here is an example for a guitar shop in edinburgh that has it: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...G=Search&meta= They have 8 different links in google under the search result. can anyone advise me how to do this? I'd be very grateful. Thanks, Paul. what I am looking to do is password a page , that will go on to display the enter button once the default password is matched, this is really only for looks rather than real security, the secure stuff is on the page that will be entered once the matched password is entered and the enter button then clicked, by doing it this way it will stop random entries that would reveal the enter button as the input would have to match a pre registerd password any help would be most welcome Hello all. I am still new to HTML coding. I come from the dark side (flash) and am seeing the light anyway I am building a "flash alt" site and I am building it around the Cargocollective.com platform. and I DESPERATELY need a HTML or JAVA or some other iphone / ipad friendly music player for the site. I have been searching for weeks but all I keep finding are the same flash plugs that make the whole concept redundant. any help, guidance, or advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.... thanks I'm wanting to make a professional website, close to the look/style of fkn0wned.com but with alot of pages and info. I DONT want someone to be able to steal it so I'm not sure what to code it in, php, css, ect. Whats the best to code in for professional websites? any ideas? There may not be many believers anymore but its all about and for God and Jesus, and other things such a help with depression, suicide, abuse, ect. Just a place to help people. I already have a few people thats going to help moderate it. Though the other site I made a long time ago, people just kept spamming porn everywhere and I couldnt stop them because they kept changing their IP, so I had to get rid of it. Anyway to stop that? Ive been asked to fix up an old webpage. The old web master is a bit senile and can not complete the page. I had created a php page but the server is so old that it doesnt support php. I want a page with a simple leftnav and I need to add a photogallery with thumbnails... anyone have any advice for me? Are there any good free templates out there that could do all this for me? I DONT WANT TO USE EBAY its too expensive i need a cheap auction software that will let multiple users register and be able to upload there own pictures of products they are trying to auction off. second i need to see if there is a program that i can integrate into my website where people login and can make there own website by using templates that are customizable such as colors and pictures and information and letting them be able to upload it themselves. Hello, I am trying to design a website for my fathers company and I am having some issues with the photogallery section. I used a template for the overall design, and when I want to add pictures horizontally it screws up all the images with their space in between them as well as the alignment of the whole website itself. Any help would be most appreciated I am trying to do this as a surprise!!! The website is: www.ckmjconstruction.com I am in the process of modifying my website and one area has me stumped. There is a command on my page that when I select a thumbnail on my page it creates a larger image of that image. Here is the syntax: <div id="picBox" style="position:absolute; right:140px; top:125px; visibility:hidden;"> </div> When this page was originally created I only had one row (table) of images. Now I have numerous rows (tables) of images, but when I select a thumbnail, the enlargement-image does not 'follow' the scroll-bar. (in other words it stays within the constraints of the picBox command, 125 pixels from the top). I suspect that I have to have a picBox defined for every table (row) of images but I am very much a newbie with HTML and I do not know how to write the code for that -- so I'm looking to you guys for some advice. Is there any way I can have the user STOP the refresh onclick? So that if t hey want to stay on that page they can instead of being redirected to the next? Thanks I don't know if this even belongs in HTML, but my question is whether or not there is any way I can include text seamlessly within a webpage from a remote location, i.e., a text file... I guess... so that it works like an iframe. Or should I just give it up and use an iframe? The website I'm creating is located he freshsession.net23.net Please take a minute to look through it. I know like half the nav links aren't working; that's because I don't know what I want to do for them yet. I haven't done this in years and I've never been that advanced so I'm really rusty. How should I lay this out? The top is going to be a picture that I'm still working on, so ignore that part (obviously the easiest to ignore). I'm just using divs right now, but what I don't like is having to have the same page for every page. I only want the content to change, but for some reason I'm not feeling iframes. But if that's my only option, I'll sure go with it. For the drawings page, I was going to use a gallery script and have them all right there. I want it to be very minimal and simple. Then for the blog I don't really know what to do, and for the guestbook I don't know what to do. Like I said, I want everything to be really nice and simple and preferably integrated. The data in the table needs to be accessable from a Google search...I could post the list as a jpg image, but the data would be dead. Hi, im mounting an apache server using Uniform Server to access remote files or VPN or VNC and Im making like a home page. Inside the home page there are three different links: one for accesing the file server, other for accesing via VPN and other for performing a VNC session to the server. My question is, how can I set the link parameter for accesing to the different services? They are hosted in different ports but in the same server. I am wanting to embed a swf file in my website. I have worked out how to do this, but I need to upload my flash file to a url somewhere else. I have read about wordpress being used for this, but I don't want to use Wordpress. Is there any other sites I can use. Note: the files need to be given a url that they can be viewed from. Thank you. Thanks Hello, I am trying to hose just a single splash page with a background image, a logo & a couple of links. I only need this free/cheap hosting for 1-2 months. Any ideas who would work for this? I'd prefer free. There may be a lot of traffic at some point to the splash page, but the only thing they will be able to do from that page is email or go to the myspace page. So I dont think I need a lot of disc space, but not sure how the bandwidth will be used since there techincally isnt anything there but a logo and a couple of links? No nudity will be on this particular splash page, so I assume I can host the file(s) any where. Can i somehow stop it from messing my entire main page? Hello, I have recently been asked to run the website for my church. (peacegaylord.org) If you go there, you will notice how simple it is. If you look at the source, it is REALLY messed up. I asked the previous webmaster and he said all he had done was take the one created in Word by our pastor, and converted some of the tags to work with older browsers. What this leaves me with is very messy and jumbled code. Now, what I really want to do is to simple re-write the entire site. If I did this I would: Use a style sheet instead of in-line styling Use non-deprecated tags (Obviously) Change the layout completely General clean-up/re-styling etc. Note: If I did this, I would try to make the entire thing HTML 5 compliant. However, a large amount of the people that use the site are older individuals, who may have old computers and therefore, old browsers. I know there is a way to make a browser recognize new tags by adding some javascript, but which tags would I have to do this with? OR I could simply go through and clean the current version up. What my question is: What would some of you do? If you would do the complete re-write, what kind of things would you add?
