HTML - Links To Websites With No Home Page File Name

I think there is a simple fix for this...but I can't think of it.

My client has an existing site (not very well designed and no templates) with hundreds of static pages. She wants me to create a new home (index.htm) page that is just a simple landing page where people can choose to enter her website OR visit the store to purchase products.

Simple enough...but, now all of the 100's of static pages have the link Home=index.htm on them. I want people to type in the URL: www.mysite.com (for example) and land on the new page to choose to go to the site to learn about her and her music OR go to the store to shop.

Once they are in the site, however, and hit the home link, I don't want them to go 'all the way back out' to the new landing page. I want them to go back to the 'old' index.htm page (or her current home page), without having to change the index.htm links on those 100's of pages.

Is there an easy fix for this, using a naming convention for the home page?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am a bit stumped on this one.

Most home pages are (I guess) index.html. If you type http://websitename into your browser, the browser automatically loads the index.html file.

I use server side includes (SSI) for header and footer, and this, I understand, require the file extension to be shtml instead of html.

My question is, if I want to use the SSI on the home page, and I rename it index.shtml, does this cause any problems? I know it works, but does it (a) slow things down while the browser searches for a index.html file first, or (b) cause any other difficulty?

So, I am a noobie. Started reading up on HTML stuff today. I coded a bit back in HS which was like 8 years ago, but it was mostly C++.

I bought a website using fatcow.com. I am trying to just set up my home page right now. I want a header with a picture. I want navigation along the left side. I don't even know what kind of tabs I have but for example I have, say... Poker, Investing, Music. When somebody clicks on one of these, I hope it will redirect to the proper page, but if somebody highlights over it, a new set of tabs comes up, so like say I scroll over music, I want another smaller menu to pop up and show more links to music, like concerts, genre, local shows. Please note these categories are arbitrary for now.

My question is where do I start? I don't know how to make these "tabs." I downloaded Arachnophilia 5.4, not quite sure how to use it, but I assume I code it there and load it onto my website.

Any help is appreciated. and its VERY URGENT! Just kidding...

I am sure it is something simple that I am missing but for some reason when I open my webpage the home page does not come up one of my other pages does. Here is the website, www.facesoflife.org

My website is www.fashionfreakers.com, I currently have up a title page prior to my main index. My question is: any way that I can make it so that my index is my main page without having to go thru my site and rename all the pages?

Anyway I can make the first page that pops up on my site www.fashionfreakers.com/hiphop_music.html? (instead of fashionfreakers.com/home)
