I have just started programming a website in html. I took some html 4 classes about10 years ago - I know that's like a lifetime ago, but anyway, it seems that I'm still able to use a bunch of the stuff I learned back then, but I get some errors when running the validator on the site. I have been able to do most of what I want on the site with a combination of what I learned back then and with some awesome help from this support forum. It seems that some of the errors I'm getting is due to newer code that I have been getting from people who have been very kind to help me out. Not due to their code, but probably because I set my doctype up to be: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> The people who have been helping out are of course using newer code, etc. I realize that I need to move up to today's way of programming, but the question is: what's the best way to do this? Back when I took the html courses, I learned to program with notepad. I did an intranet back then in frontpage, but from what I heard, that code was pretty messy and didn't always show right in all browsers. The site I'm building now needs to work in at least all major browsers as I need to earn a living from it. What's the recommeded software, html version, etc. these days? I have a copy of the latest dreamweaver, but does that write messy code similar to what frontpage did back then? How about some free software? What html version is recommended etc., keeping in mind that I need the site to be a reliable as possible and not that flashy, and that I am pretty green at this and not a full time programmer. There will be some rollover buttons, tables, etc., on the site, but that's really it, and then some forms and a link to a wordpress blog I will be putting together. I hope there are someone out there with a good recommendation. Also, is there a way to get the html 4 to work with never code such as javascripts etc. I can upload a zip with the code and images for the site if anyone has time to look at, and helping me figure out how to solve some of the validation errors I'm getting? The site in not uploaded yet but on my harddrive. Thank you all and have a great weekend. Johanm Ok I'm still really new to HTML with no bad habits & would like to use a program that is really easy to use & geared toward function-ability. I've been using notepad for my HTML I would prefer to steer away from DreamWeaver as I dont plan on using a WYSIWYG So what are my other options for great programs to write HTML in? Thanks I have a PHP application that our company uses for basically everything. Now I'm needing to add hyperlinks to folders on the shared drive on the server, since this is now where everyone will be storing the files they work on. The map drive is on the same server as the website but so far I have been unable to figure out the syntax for the hyperlink in order to be able to open the folder contents. Any ideas on how I could do this? At present i am creating a knowledge base at work and have an admin access link that goes to a folder on a server. What i want is client or server side html to request a password when this link is clicked and if the password is not correct then a message box shows that says the password is incorrect. Can anyone help? I apoligise for what may seem a basic question but I have built a very large website in HTML 4.0, which runs fine in both IE7 and Firefox 3. Out of habit, I put the first letter of each name - folder, file, and image, in upper case. I have been told, however, that I shouldn't have done that as it could cause problems with some browsers. As there really is a very large number of folders, files, and images that I would have to change, and because the website works fine with IE7 and Firefox, I thought I'd ask what forum members know (or think). I've looked in my book on HTML and searched the Internet but have not managed to find the answer anywhere. TIA Tyger please help me guys!!! im trying to find a html code that allows people download a pdf files from the website that im trying to make..anyone out there help me.. Hi, I'm a beginner, so I realize that my question will be silly - sorry for that. I'm just doing a tutorial on html/css. I created a simple website, with stylesheet and image. Everthing was hunky dory as long as files were sitting on the desktop. When I moved them to appropriate folders (I created "html", "css" and "img" folders on desktop), changed the paths from /style.css to css/style.css and from imgname.jpg to img/imgname.jpg, the site completely ignores styles and image. Then once I move it back to the desktop it stats reading it correctly. It's weird for me and I can't find the reason. I checked all paths million times and there is no error there. Whole operation should be super obvious, yet I can't resolve it. I'd appreciate your help. Thank you in advance, JJ Hey, I am trying to create a webpage at work to replace our desktop, and was wondering if it was possible to create a link/button on the page that would open my computer etc.. Thanks in advance I was learing HTML from w3schools.com. It says something about Computer Output tags. it just says <code>Computer code </code> <br> <kbd>Keyboard input</kbd> <br> <tt>Teletype text</tt> <br> <samp>Sample text</samp> <br> <var>Computer variable</var> <br> Does not say enything else about that. What are they?and where are they used?. can anybody explain with example. Hi - I'm just a dumb cellist who wrote the code for his wedding gig web page. It's the first time I've tried writing my own code. There are still a few glitches to work out. Anyway, here it is; www.chamber-players.com I need some help because my drop down menu has a funny quirk; when I click on "Music Ideas" more than once it alternates between two different pages. You'll see if you try it. The same thing happens with "Planning". I know there are a different ways to do a drop down menus but is there any quick fix for this? I really appreciate the help! Ciao, cellist I've got a website under construction at www.banffridgeestates.com. On the design plans page (www.banffridgeestates.com/design_plans.htm), I've got 9 thumbs for the user to click on and a PDF file opens in Adobe Reader. But just in case the user doesn't have Adobe Reader or some other PDF viewing application, is there a way for me to program the link so that it detects whether the user has such an application, and to open a JPEG if he doesn't have one? I need to have this text in html. I need only the text, no table. My problem was, that when i changed the fontsize, a new paragraph was created. But i want it on one line. Thanks I have a list of names in say a data base flat file, Do you know if there is a utility that will take and read per line and generate a html file? Hav'nt found anything as of yet but am wondering if someone could steer me in the right direction. thanks Hi Newbie question: I want my html file, when accessed directly from the browser, to open a different web-page (which is a php script that calls my html file when it's done). But if my html file was reffered to from that page, it's ok - open it. How can I achieve this? Thanks Joe /sorry for all the mistakes, I'm not a native English speaker/ I know it may sound sill or wierd for some of you but I'm completly new in html and all those things but I have to do a project in information technology - a website about me. I have to split it into two frames. I did sth like this: <frameset> <frame name="A" src="menu.html"> <frame name="B" src="homepage.html"> </frameset> The thing is - it looks really awful. Look: http://tinypic.pl/i/00001/xmbmjwgb6amg.png Can i delete somehow this horrible line between the frames? I would like to put an image as a backgraund and it won't look good if there's a wide grey line splitting it. Help! |
