JavaScript - Capture Search Query
Hi,
I am building a user model of web browsing behavior (chrome plug-in) and would like to capture any search query that is entered into google.com. When I view source I see that the form name is f and the input name is q, is there a reason that document.f.q.value is not working?? Any suggestions of what would work? For those who are confused, It says, If &q= is present in the URI, replace/append &q= with &q=test1+test2+test3 Problem: It appends test1+test2+test3 instantly, when it sees &q= in the URL. Basically, how do I make it wait until I click the submit/search button Thank you. Update: I heard about Onsubmit() event, but not really familiar with it. How do I use it? like, should I go to google source page and edit the form id? Also, Any other methods besides Onsubmit()? here is the problem i am running into. I dont know how to ignore or add certain parts of the search when it sends. for example. take a look at Code: <option value="http://rrinfo.co.ramsey.mn.us/public/characteristic/PropertySearchResults.aspx?pin=&Nbr=&Street=&pg=1" selected>Ramsey</option> When i try to do a search under this drop down selection it doesnt work. because it needs the &pg=1 to be added to the users search request. I want them to be able to type in their house number and their street address and it will change to what each seperate (outside) search engine needs. Does this make any sense at all? So when user clicks on link, by default there will be parameters passed in query string as you can see in the setDefaults private method below. However, I'm stuck trying to figure out the best way to append values selected from filter dropdown to the query string. I can't seem to capture keystrokes (via onkeydown) in Firefox. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here's my question: What would cause the above code to fail, when used in a larger, more complicated webpage? If I debug my webpage (using FireBug 1.4.5), I note that "onkeydown" indeed points to my keyboard handler. But when I put a simple debug message in that handler, I get absolutely nothing -- no matter what code I paste in the keyboard handler, it doesn't run. No matter how many keys I press! I run the same program in Internet Explorer and it runs fine. I run the keyboard code by itself in Firefox and it runs fine. I've spent about 10 hours Googling this, and all I can find is discussions of how to capture keystrokes in Firefox vs. IE. I found about 20 different variations on the code I pasted above. The "program" I'm trying to use with this keyboard capture code with is a large browser game -- a glorified webpage, even if it behaves like a Windows game -- with hundreds of objects (divs). There are several layers of graphics to make the game happen. I'm just trying to figure out what is FUNDAMENTALLY different between my large program and a simple webpage, when it comes to something simple like keyboard capture. Is it the size, in bytes, of my webpage? Is it the large number of DIVs? The large number of functions? Incidentally, I'm not using Frames. Any help would be much appreciated. The code works independently -- in fact, I've tried several different variations/code snippets that other people have used/recommended. They all work, and are functionally equivalent. But here's the clincher -- my whole program works fine -- keyboard and all -- once I run Venkman's Javascript debugger and then return to my program window! It's as if Venkman's is doing something (setup, initialization) that my program isn't. What could it be though? I have a credit card donation page and what I wanted to do is after they click the submit button and transaction is successfult I wanted to capture the donation amount they enter from the donation page and show it to the next page. is it possible to capture the control.event or element.event that was fired to invoke the onbeforeunload event. for example, if a button is clicked and it causes the onbeforeunload event to fire can i determine which button was clicked. thanks Hello people. I'm looking to create a simple search engine capable of searching multiple search engines simultaneously together (e.g. Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.) and then displaying the results below for all sites on the same page. I don't want each search engine results page opening up in individual windows or anything, nor do I want people to have to manually select the search engine to search with. Just a single page where a user types in something, pressed [Enter] and then presented with all results from multiple sites on one page (without duplicates). My php is dire and help with putting these together would help me display markers on a map for all results from a search form rather than display all records within the db as is happening at present....
