JavaScript - Using Javascript To Read A Txt File
Ok, I am currently working on an announcements portlet for a dashboard that my team is creating. What is desired is to be able to have this portlet access a stored text file (file can be edited so content is subject to change) that will have all the information needed for these announcements. The JavaScript will then write it into a html file.
I am a novice at html, and javascript; and i was hoping that if anyone had any advice, ideas, or a helpful link that could point me in the right direction I would much appreciate it. Similar TutorialsI am having trouble with JavaScript code and do not know why it is not working. I have the code I think is right but it is not showing up in my browser when run. Any ideas? Also are there any other ways to read in an xml file using javascript? please list if so. Hi, i have a question, is JavaScript can read an external file? i have an ear file, can it read external file without the external file compile together in the ear file? can we do so? I use a PHP page to set elements of a text file on our web server and I want to create a javascript function to intermitently check the contents of that file and if an element in that file matches a criteria I want to act on it... So, I do this <script type="text/javascript"> t = setInterval("CHECKFILE()",5000); </script> This calls the CHECKFILE function every 5000ms <script type="text/javascript"> function CHECKFILE(){ } </script> How, in the CHECKFILE function can I read from a file called FILE.txt for example?? In PHP I can use $myFile = "FILE.txt"; $theData = file($myFile); And this gives me an array, with each element containing one line from the file Can I do similar in Javascript? Or can I add PHP into the JS to do it for me? Thanks hi i m creating a webpage using javascript and php where i need to upload a doc file or zip and read all the words in doc file if it is zip i need to read all the words in all the doc files. i m trying to upload using file input but it does not show path of file only file name how i m suppose to upload and read it. hi, i have looked all over the internet but i can't find anything that works. All i want to do is simply read from a text file. Thanks Hi guys, here again with another question. I would parse a file, my js read fine an html file, but this one is an export from msword. I don't know if this is the problem. I can't change the file. here is how my js read: Code: <body> <input type='button' value='Load' onclick="doLoad()" /> <script type='text/javascript'> /* THIS IS THE FILE TO READ */ var fileToRead="test.html"; /* THIS FUNCTION IS TO READ THE HTML FILE */ function IO(U) {//LA MOD String Version. A tiny ajax library. by, DanDavis var X = !window.XMLHttpRequest ? new ActiveXObject('Microsoft.XMLHTTP') : new XMLHttpRequest(); X.open('GET', U, false ); X.setRequestHeader('Content-Type', 'text/html') X.send(''); return X.responseXML;} function doLoad(){ /* HERE IS THE CALL TO READ THE FILE */ var orari=(IO(fileToRead)); var arrTR=orari.getElementsByTagName('tr'); var arrTD_3nd_line=arrTR[1].getElementsByTagName('td'); var arr_p_1c_3l=arrTD_3nd_line[0].getElementsByTagName('p'); alert(arr_p_1c_3l[0].nodeValue); } </script> and here is a snip of the html i read: Code: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> <html xmlns:v="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" xmlns:o="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" xmlns:w="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:word" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252"> <meta name="ProgId" content="Word.Document"> <meta name="Generator" content="Microsoft Word 10"> <meta name="Originator" content="Microsoft Word 10"> <link rel="File-List" href="orarioinvernale_file/filelist.xml"> <title>ORARI </title> <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:DocumentProperties> <o:Author>Ufficio Stampa</o:Author> <o:Template>Normal</o:Template> <o:LastAuthor>Ufficio Stampa</o:LastAuthor> <o:Revision>4</o:Revision> <o:TotalTime>1</o:TotalTime> <o:Created>2005-11-28T12:25:00Z</o:Created> <o:LastSaved>2006-01-13T10:24:00Z</o:LastSaved> <o:Pages>1</o:Pages> <o:Words>762</o:Words> <o:Characters>4344</o:Characters> <o:Company>mycomp</o:Company> <o:Lines>36</o:Lines> <o:Paragraphs>10</o:Paragraphs> <o:CharactersWithSpaces>5096</o:CharactersWithSpaces> <o:Version>10.2625</o:Version> </o:DocumentProperties> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:SpellingState>Clean</w:SpellingState> <w:GrammarState>Clean</w:GrammarState> <w:HyphenationZone>14</w:HyphenationZone> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--> <style> <!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:"Comic Sans MS"; panose-1:3 15 7 2 3 3 2 2 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:script; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signatu 647 0 0 0 159 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} p {mso-margin-top-alt:auto; margin-right:0cm; mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto; margin-left:0cm; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} span.SpellE {mso-style-name:""; mso-spl-e:yes;} span.GramE {mso-style-name:""; mso-gram-e:yes;} @page Section1 {size:595.3pt 841.9pt; margin:70.85pt 2.0cm 2.0cm 2.0cm; mso-header-margin:35.4pt; mso-footer-margin:35.4pt; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> </style><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Tabella normale"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} </style> <![endif]--> <meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="it"> <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:shapedefaults v:ext="edit" spidmax="4098"/> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:shapelayout v:ext="edit"> <o:idmap v:ext="edit" data="1"/> </o:shapelayout></xml><![endif]--> </head> <body style="" bgcolor="#ccffff" lang="IT"> <div class="Section1"> <div style="text-align: center;"> </div> <table class="MsoNormalTable" style="width: 100%;" border="1" cellpadding="0" height="1733" width="100%"> <tbody> <tr style="height: 75.75pt;"> .... and so on.... the problem is that my error console (from firefox) when i click my read button (not when i load the page) gives me errors: Code: sintax error: source: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> if i comment this it give me: Code: missing tag </meta> source: </head> and if i put Code: </meta> another meta is required and so on. But i can't modify the source i read, so is there a way to read this file? Many thanks Backit for some reason I am unable to read the file contents, or it could be something else, I added in some extra code to see where the script got to and I only get to see '1' on the output. Is there something else I have missed ? I am wanting to ready each line one by one and replace a phrase with another, then output the new line. I visit the 1.txt file in my browser and the file shows fine. var txtFile = new XMLHttpRequest(); txtFile.open("GET", "http://mysite.com/convertJS/1.txt", true); txtFile.onreadystatechange = function() { document.write("1<br>"); if (txtFile.readyState === 4) { // document is ready to parse. document.write("2<br>"); if (txtFile.status === 200) { // file is found document.write("3<br>"); allText = txtFile.responseText; lines = txtFile.responseText.split("\n"); document.write(lines + "<br>"); // I shall be altering the text in each line, search and replace, so only need to be able to read one line at a time. } } } txtFile.send(null); // close file. sorry that i used the quote method to post, but when i used [ code ] it corupted the text as the document . write lines?! Hi, i need to read a files contents to an array so that i can check which lines of the file i need to write back. im not very good with arrays and haven't had any luck so far. thanks I am wanting to setup a dependant drop down where when a user clicks on the first drop down, it changes the contents of the second. The way I intend to do this is via a csv file. I have found several scripts but I have been unable to get them to work. Two of which a http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...3114347AA7GYJ7 http://purbayubudi.wordpress.com/200...ng-javascript/ The first is the better option from what I can see. but the problem is readyState seems to be always 1. I am wondering if someone could perhaps give me a few moments to see if I can get this to work or suggest a better solution. I don't want to use a database approach, at least not yet. All -- I have a JavaScript config file called gameSetting.js which contains a bunch of variables which configures a particular game. I also have a shared JavaScript library which uses the variables in gameSetting.js, which I include like so: <script type="text/javascript" src="gameSetting.js" ></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="gameLibrary.js" ></script> In gameSetting.js I have: $(document).ready(function() { // call some functions / classes in gameLibrary.js } in Firefox, Safari, and Chrome, this works fine. However, in IE, when it's parsing gameSetting.js, it complains that the functions that live in gameLibrary.js aren't defined. When it gets to parsing gameLibrary.js, the variables in gameSetting.js are reported as not being defined. I've tried dynamically bootstrapping the gameLibrary file using this function in document.ready for dynamic load... $.getScript("gameLibrary.js"); However, the same problem still happens in IE, where when it parses the files individually it's not taking into context the file/variables that came before, so it's not an out of load order problem. My options a 1) collapsing all the functions in gameLibrary.js and variables in gameSetting.js into one file. However, this is not practical because this is dealing with literally hundreds of games, and having a gameLibrary.js in ONE location for ONE update is what makes most logical sense. 2) figure out a way to get this to work where variables in file1 are accessible to file2 in IE (as it seems they are in other browsers). jQuery seems to be able to have multiple plugins that all refer to the based jQuery-1.3.2.js, so I know there is a way to get this to work. Help appreciated. Nero This is a must-read for all users posting to the JavaScript forum, especially if you're looking to get help. A lot of you are posting in a manner that makes it extremely difficult- if not impossible- to respond to. Below are a list of posting guidelines and tips we ask that you please read- and FOLLOW- when asking for help: 1) Type in a subject that summarizes your question! - The fastest way to turn off other members wanting to help you is to type an incomplete or silly subject for your post. Examples of poor subject titles include: - "Help!" - "I'm a newbie...please!" - "Is this possible using JavaScript?" - "loops" - "Urgent...deadline tomorrow!" - "A challenge for you JavaScript masters" The above subjects either have absolutely nothing to do with the question itself, or are grossly incomplete (ie: "loops"). When asking for help, enter a subject that summarizes your question, period! Don't use silly, incomplete, or "bait" subjects. 2) Be descriptive and articulate when asking your question! Some of you are posting as if we're all psychics, and are supposed to grasp your question with the little or confusing information you've provided in your question. We cannot read your mind, and putting up a post like "Can someone help me with arrays?" or "How can I get the slide-in slideshow to work on my site?" is not nearly enough information to go by. What exactly do you want to know about arrays? Which slide-in slideshow are you referring to (the one written by Bill Gates?)? Set us up with some crucial background information, what you want to do, and what the problem is. Be concise and precise. Also when posting, understand that you're trying to convince others to help you. Be articulate and have respect for the English language! Check for spelling/grammar mistakes, and try and format your question and code in an easily legible manner. Big tip: Use the preview button often. Bottom line- put yourself in our shoes, and try and phrase the question so it's clear and easy to respond to. 3) Do your homework first. Only post the part of the script you're having trouble with! There are generally two types of people- ones that simply dump their entire page or problem and expect everyone to spend hours solving everything for them, and those that do their own homework first, and only ask very specific, manageable questions. The later invariably gets more and better responses from others. When you're lazy, do not expect us to be hardworking for you. As an example, lets say you're working on a long script that uses the "switch" statement of JavaScript, and it's returning errors. You could either: i) Post the entire script and simply say "Please debug this script for me!" ii) Or, localize the problem yourself first and post instead "Can someone tell me the syntax of the switch statement in JavaScript?" The second question will get a LOT more quality responses, as it is concise, manageable, and not overwhelming. Remember, ask for the world, and you'll get nothing. Ask for a little, and you'll get a lot. 4) Use the search feature often to make sure your question isn't already answered- The longer this forum has been online, the more solutions it accumulates. Always search past posts first (using the search link to your upper right) to make sure your question isn't already answered. Use 1-2 keywords as the search terms. 5) Know the capabilities and limits of JavaScript before posting. Please familiarize yourself with what JavaScript can- and cannot do- before posting. Many people are posting JS questions that simply cannot be accomplished using the language, period. JavaScript is a client side language, and cannot manipulate the server end in any way, such as saving data to the server, accessing a database etc. JavaScript works strictly on the user end, such as popping up a window, applying an image rollover effect, or determining user screen resolution (*without* the ability to pass this info back to the server). If JavaScript is completely new to you, please familiarize yourself somewhat with the language, by visiting the below links - JavaScript questions and answers list - JavaScript tutorials - Advanced JavaScript tutorials - Pre-made JavaScripts (illustrates typical JS applications) 6) Be appreciative and follow up when getting a response. Everyone here is volunterring their time to help out others. The least you can do is be appreciative and follow up when getting a helpful response. If you've solved your problem, let people know so they don't continue spending time on your question. Saying a little "thank you" goes a long way. I wants to access server web page which data is continuously growing(streaming data), I want to buffered some of that data write it in responseText then again get next buffered data write it and so on (in AJAX). Is it possible? if yes how to do that? hi , i am trying to pass a javascript variable into URL ..but not getting the value.. var newID = 2; row.insertCell(6).innerHTML = "<a href=Update_Gate.cfm?GateIdVar=newID>Edit Gate</a>"; i am getting "newID" in Update_Gate.cfm page ... i want to pass this javascript variable in url and read it on the other page as form field value any help !! Hello, Is there a way with JavaScript to easily detect which mobile browser is being used? I would not normally ask this, but because we do not have the time or budget to implement any back end detection scripting it is our only option right now! I don't think we will need to detect which version of the browser, or which revision of the phone is used - just need to target each family to deliver the proper video type. Hi, Using the following javascript: Code: <script type="text/javascript" src="http://twitter.com/javascripts/blogger.js"> </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/USERNAME.json?callback=twitterCallback2&count=1"> </script> I am able to display the latest tweet of a user into a div. However, I have a user-generated database of username's stored in an XML file and would like to list each username's latest tweet on a single page. Any thoughts on how I might be able to achive this? I'm new to javascript so forgive my stupidity. I can get this code to take two separate sections of a file which are not beside each other and write them into another file. It always comes up as a single full line of the code instead of the sections I want. The code includes the student number first name last name and three results of assignments. I want the code to write the student number and three results of all the students into a file and then work out the average of the student results. Can you help? Code: try{ while (in.hasNextLine()) { String line = in.nextLine(); out.println( line); int i=0; if(!Character.isDigit(line.charAt(i))) { i++; } studentStringNumber = line.substring(0, i); String stringResult = line.substring(i); studentStringNumber = studentStringNumber.trim(); stringResults = stringResults.trim(); double stringResultsValue = Double.parseDouble(stringResults.trim()); stringResults = in.nextLine(); studentStringNumber = in.nextLine(); studentNumber = Integer.parseInt(studentStringNumber); if(in.hasNextInt()) { int value = in.nextInt(); } results = Double.parseDouble(stringResults); if(in.hasNextDouble()) { double value = in.nextDouble(); } Scanner lineScanner = new Scanner(line); studentStringNumber = lineScanner.next(); while(!lineScanner.hasNextDouble()) { studentStringNumber = studentStringNumber+ " " +lineScanner.next(); } stringResultsValue = lineScanner.nextDouble(); } } Hi i am using javascript for the first time and i have a problem .I have 2 files html and javascript file in seperate but i donot know how to make them work .the code is down below .Thanks in advance for help. I got the html file to show but none of the text in the file will show.
