JavaScript - Trying To Manipulate Arguments Passed To A Simple Function
Hi all,
I have a newbie question. I have just started working with javascript and would appreciate some guidance. I have a webpage and there are products for sale on it(this is not live it is merely being used as practice project). Beside each product is a description a price and an 'add to cart' button. My cart is simply a div with an id of 'cart' and it has a text box within it. I need the product name to be displayed within the div (this, I have working), I also need to display the product price in the text box once the button(add to cart ) for that particular product has been pressed. Also when the button for another product is pressed, I want the cost/value for that product to be added to the other value and displayed in the text box in the cart div... I apologise for rambling on but this is the best way of me explaining my needs.... Here's where i am right now.. The HTML snippet Code: <div id ="cart"> <p><img src="images/shopping-cart.png" alt ="cart"/>Your Cart</p> <div id="sum"><!--(this is the div where the total goes)--> <input type="text" id="total" value="0" /><p>€ Your Total <input type="reset" value = "reset" /></p> </div> </div> <h2 id ="black">Blackcurrent<br /></h2> <p>€ 12.00 <input type = "submit" value ="add to cart" onClick = "shoppingCart('Blackcurrent',12)" /></p> And the javascript: Code: alert ("working"); function shoppingCart (itemName, itemValue) { /* var thePrice = Number(itemValue); return thePrice;*/ document.getElementById ("cart").innerHTML += itemName + "<br/>"; document.getElementById('total').value = Number(document.getElementById('total').value) + itemValue; } I hope i have posted correctly and am aware that i have only posted a segment of the HTML.. Please let me know if you need any more code or info.. Thanks a lot in advance for any help... The code below is the relevant part to an autosuggest feature. The variable that isn't being passed is "firstValidIndex". It is being set appropriately, but when it is used in "sortArray()", its value is 0. Code: // here we must check to see if where the string matched was at the beginning of a string inside this.aNames // firstValidIndex is the first index where the char is at the beginning of a string var firstValidIndex; loop1: for(var j in firstIndices) { loop2: for(var k in allOccurrences) { if(allOccurrences[k] == firstIndices[j]) { firstValidIndex = firstIndices[j]; aList.push(this.aNames[i]); ctr++; break loop1; break loop2; } } } function sortArray(a,b) { var lca = a.toLowerCase(); var lcb = b.toLowerCase(); var lco = str.toLowerCase(); var diff = lca.indexOf(lco, firstValidIndex) - lcb.indexOf(lco, firstValidIndex); // some debugging code here alert("Comparing "+lca+" with "+ lcb+"\nDiff:"+diff+"\nFirst Valid Index: "+firstValidIndex); if ( diff < 0 ) return -1; if ( diff > 0 ) return 1; return 0; } aList.sort(sortArray); Image of the output: http://i.imgur.com/jqzhJxb.png What I'm trying to do, is pass an object by reference so that I can use it in other scripts, and allow the current script to change the object's value when appropriate. What's happening: It passes correctly, you can see that my var_dump of the object before the function call is 30. After the function call, it becomes 60. Also, it writes "now60" to the document as instructed. When I call the function the second time, it does nothing. No error, no repeat of writing now60 to the document, etc. And in the last var_dump, which is after the second function call - you can see that the value remained 60. Why? Thanks for your help! Code: PHP Code: var quickChallengeTimer = {timer:30}; var quickChallengeQuestion; var quickChallengeAnswer; var quickChallengeResponse; function quickChallenge(quickChallengeTimerfunc, quickChallengeQuestion, quickChallengeAnswer) { if (typeof quickChallengeResponse == 'undefined') { switch (quickChallengeTimerfunc.timer) { case 30: quickChallengeTimerfunc.timer = 60; quickChallengeResponse = 'undefined'; document.write("now60"); break; case 60: quickChallengeTimerfunc.timer = 120; quickChallengeResponse = 'undefined'; document.write("now120"); break; default: document.write("Error"); break; } } console.dir(quickChallengeTimerfunc.timer); } var_dump(quickChallengeTimer); quickChallenge(quickChallengeTimer); var_dump(quickChallengeTimer); quickChallenge(quickChallengeTimer); var_dump(quickChallengeTimer); Hi, New to JS. Have ordered some new books, but need to get somethings going in the mean time. What I wanted to do is to link to a new page having a date range input in the form of 6 text boxes, 2 sets of mm-dd-yy, from and to, where the upon loading the page box 1 of the from would auto focus and then auto tab and then post where php could take over on the server side. Setting up the form and the lay out, no problem. Auto focusing went just like expected using the following code, included because on the next step everything fell apart. [/CODE] <script type="text/javascript" > window.onload=function() { document.getElementById("input1").focus(); } </script> [/CODE] So then the wheels came off and in response, began to simplify what was trying to be done to find where the issues were. As far as I can get working is: Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html> <head> <script type="text/javascript" > window.onload=function() { document.getElementById("input1").focus(); } </script> <script type="text/javascript" > function myFunc() { alert("is this working"); } </script> </head> <body> <input id="input1" name="input1" type="text" onkeyup="myFunc()" maxlength="2" value="type a No." /> </body> </html> First issue with this: When I first get to the page everything is just as ordered. The focus is on the text box and the default value is "type a No." When I press a key onkeyup, I bring up the alert box with "is this working" in it. But when I refresh the page with the refresh button, after clicking the "ok" on the alert box, the character that was typed in is still displayed. If I use the link to the page, or the URL from the address bar, then the page reloads properly with the default value, "type a No". Question 1: How do you get the default textbox value using the refresh button as apposed to reloading the page using a link or from the address bar? Using Firefox 8.0 Second and more important at the moment: If I change the script to pass an argument to the function the script crashes. It does not pull up an alert box and freezes. My guess is that I'm doing something wrong on a concept level. NOTE: changed the default value of the text box to " ". Looked like to me there was an issue with the size specification and the default string length as you could only enter in a key stroke by highlighting the text and replacing it Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html> <head> <script type="text/javascript" > window.onload=function() { document.getElementById("input1").focus(); } </script> <script type="text/javascript" > function myFunc(awe) { alert(awe); } </script> </head> <body> <input id="input1" name="input1" type="text" onkeyup="myFunc("123")" maxlength="2" value="" /> </body> </html> Question 2: can someone straighten me out with this? Hi I have problem to manipulate my form with array. I want to copy my input from one input to other input but it didnt work. i did explore the usage of document.myForm.feed[3].value but it gave me error. Pleaseee help? Thanks script sample: <form name=myForm> <input name=feed[] onBlur=duplicate(this)> <input name=feed[] onBlur=duplicate(this)> <input name=feed[] onBlur=duplicate(this)> <input name=feed[] onBlur=duplicate(this)> <input name=feed[] onBlur=duplicate(this)> <input name=feed[] onBlur=duplicate(this)> <input name=feed[] onBlur=duplicate(this)> <input name=feed[] onBlur=duplicate(this)> <input name=copier[] onBlur=sendback(this)> <input name=copier[] onBlur=sendback(this)> <input name=copier[] onBlur=sendback(this)> <input name=copier[] onBlur=sendback(this)> <input name=copier[] onBlur=sendback(this)> <input name=copier[] onBlur=sendback(this)> <input name=copier[] onBlur=sendback(this)> <input name=copier[] onBlur=sendback(this)> <input name=copier[] onBlur=sendback(this)> </form> <SCRIPT> function duplicate(info) { //this function should copy 'info' to copier input //with the same element location //eg: feed[3] will copy to copier[3], feed[5] will copy to copier[5] //(can be any element insert by user) // the task would be: // 1. to get which element number has been inserted // 2. to get the origin text value // 3. to write the same element position for copier } function sendback(info) { //this function should copy 'info' to feed input //with the same element location //copier[2] will copy to feed[2], copier[3] will copy to feed[3] //(can be any element insert by user) } </SCRIPT> Hey peeps, I'm trying to use wget to access this website that uses javascript. The website is from my work. Basically I made a program that parses information from our payment page. It tells me how much I am being paid for the month. Anywho, the variables on the page are in javascript, and thats one language I'm not proficient at. I need to change the month that it gets the pay for. The default is the current month. But it can be changed to last month, and from the code I can tell that something has to be changed from "THIS_MONTH" to "LAST_MONTH", but I'm not sure how to properly do it. Posted below is the source code from the website. Please let me know how I can change that without actually having to click the button to change the scope to last month. And also, is there any way to change this in the post method, or any other method that wget uses? I only included the parts I thought could be relevant. Thanks guys! Basically, what I need done is this: This is a form [This is a text Box] [This is a submit button] Users on my website will enter a URL into the text box and press submit. Upon pressing submit it will redirect them to a webpage based on what they inserted into the textbox, sounds easy. But this is where it gets complicated. I need to take out certain parts of the URL they entered and place them inside of another URL. Here is an example www.google.com/images/picture/Download77_75.html I need to take the words in BOLD and Itallics and insert them specifically into another URL. which they will be redirected to after pressing submit. so now redirect to www.Mywebsite.com/Download77-with/GIF/images Basically I have the original string, which like above would be www.Mywebsite.com/Italicized string-with/GIF/Bolded String The original redirect link would stay the same. And taking from what you entered into the form, it would take out the specific bits and add them into the specific bits into another URL and redirect to that URL. Please note that I believe this is only possible becuase the amount of characters between the strings will ALWAYS be the same based on the content that my users are putting into the submit box. I.E the string in the Italicized string will always be 10 characters long, and everything in the Bolded String will always be 8 characters long (Not really, just an example). So maybe the script could tell it to count characters and take out characters from characters 8-15 and characters 19-36 then place them in the specific spots and then redirect them to that compiled link. Thanks for ALL the help! This one really boggled my mind. I could not think of anything that would help. This forum has come out to be my BEST resource %100 of the time. If you could help me with this. I will be AMAZED. Thanks in advance! PS: It doesen't have to be in any particular code language, But I do prefer HTML and Javascript. Hello. I need to manipulate with a upper and lower case on STRINGS For example I have string: Code: LALA_KAKA_mama_WIWI I need to conwert it to Code: Lala_kaka_mama_wiwi with first letter upper case. Is it one simple way to do it with JS script/code? Best Regards How would I add up a array of numbers in a function? My numbers keep getting written as strings, instead of adding onto each other. I am a beginner. function (myNumbers) { var number = [6,9,10,13,14]; var total = 0; for(var total=0; total < number.length; total = total + 1) { total = total + number; document.write(total); } } myNumbers(); This is just an excercise. I made a 50th anniversary guestbook to add memories/etc about our organization. The people can look at the entries and then if they want to add one of there own, there's a link that should pop up a form in a new for them to add it. I have no idea why this pop is not working in Internet Explorer (both IE6 and 7). It works beautifully in Firefox. I have no idea how you can go wrong with window.open. I'm stuck. Again, only the actual pop up function doesn't work. Everything else seems to be working fine. I included all of my code though even for the tab navigation because the link to the pop up form changes based on what tab they are in (i.e. if they're looking at the past memories tab and click on the link, it takes them to the past memories form). I know it's probably TMI on the code, but I thought it might be somehow related and better safe than sorry, right? Thank you! Hi there, I've been scouring the web and my mind for the last 24 hours trying to find a script that will work for what I need. It seems like it would be something super simple. I need visitors to my site to be able to search if we offer service in their area. i.e. Enter Zip Code: [Search Field] (Submit Button) Pop-up results or a results page with one of two responses. Yes, we offer service. No, we do not cover your area. Something similar to what this company has on their site, http://www.oilpatchfuel.com/Pages/Welcome.aspx Any help is a greatly GREATLY appreciated!! Hello I would like to know how this is not functional. surely passing the function to another function would work so I can use the same variables without having to write it out again. [ICODE] <html> <head> <title>Number Conversions</title> <script> function addNumbers () { var firstnumber = document.calculator.myFirstNumber.value; var secondnumber = document.calculator.mySecondNumber.value; var total = parseInt(firstnumber) + parseInt(secondnumber); document.calculator.myTotal.value = total; document.calculator.myHex.value = total.toString(16); document.calculator.myOct.value = total.toString(8); document.calculator.myBinary.value = total.toString(2); document.write("End of Calculation."); } function subtractNumbers (addNumbers) { var total = parseInt(firstnumber) - parseInt(secondnumber); } </script> </head> <body> <form name="calculator"> First Number <input type=text name="myFirstNumber" value=0 size=3> <br> Second Number <input type=text name="mySecondNumber" value=0 size=3><br><br> <input type="button" value="ADD" onclick="addNumbers();"> <input type="button" value="SUBTRACT" onclick="subtractNumbers();"><br> Total <input type=text name="myTotal" value=0 size=3><br> Binary <input type=text name="myBinary" value=0 size=8><br> Octal <input type=text name="myOct" value=0 size=3><br> Hexidecimal <input type=text name="myHex" value=0 size=3><br> </form> </body> </html> [ICODE] Code: function splook(val){ return speciesDB.queryBy(function(row){ return row.data.species_id == val; }).itemAt(0).data.speciesDB; } and the speciesDB Code: {success:true,rows:[{"species_id":"1","species_idx":"1","species":"Boa Constrictor"},{"species_id":"2","species_idx":"2","species":"Ball Python"},{"species_id":"3","species_idx":"3","species":"Reticulated Python"},{"species_id":"4","species_idx":"4","species":"SriLanka Python"},{"species_id":"5","species_idx":"5","species":"Blood Python"},{"species_id":"6","species_idx":"6","species":"Burmese Python"}]} I need to take val and match it with the data and return species. I just can't figure it out though! Thanks! Goodafternoon! What im trying to do is get the users location (from the iPhone) which I have working and store it in a MySQL database (semi works). My problem is that to get the location, you need to use javascript. So I thought of using Ajax to post that back to the server. I have very little knowledge in Javascript, and Ajax, so this has been a bit of a struggle. Iv tried to learn how to do it with a tutorial: http://www.tizag.com/ajaxTutorial/ajax-javascript.php And this is what I got: PHP Code: <?php function is_iPhone($agent='') { if(empty($agent)) $agent = $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']; if(!empty($agent) and preg_match("~Mozilla/[^ ]+ \((iPhone|iPod); U; CPU [^;]+ Mac OS X; [^)]+\) AppleWebKit/[^ ]+ \(KHTML, like Gecko\) Version/[^ ]+ Mobile/[^ ]+ Safari/[^ ]+~",$agent,$match)) { return "YES"; } elseif(stristr($agent,'iphone') or stristr($agent,'ipod')){ return "MAYBE"; } else { return "NO"; } } echo is_iPhone(); ?> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//WAPFORUM//DTD XHTML Mobile 1.0//EN" "http://www.wapforum.org/DTD/xhtml-mobile10.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>iPhone 3.0 geolocation demo</title> <meta content="width=device-width; initial-scale=1.0; maximum-scale=1.0; user-scalable=0;" name="viewport"/> </head> <body> <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript"> <!-- //Browser Support Code function ajaxFunction(){ var ajaxRequest; // The variable that makes Ajax possible! try{ // Opera 8.0+, Firefox, Safari ajaxRequest = new XMLHttpRequest(); } catch (e){ // Internet Explorer Browsers try{ ajaxRequest = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP"); } catch (e) { try{ ajaxRequest = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } catch (e){ // Something went wrong alert("Your browser broke!"); return false; } } } // Create a function that will receive data sent from the server ajaxRequest.onreadystatechange = function(){ if(ajaxRequest.readyState == 4){ document.myForm.time.value = ajaxRequest.responseText; } } ajaxRequest.open("GET", "UpdateLog.php?lat=" + Lat + "&long=" + Long + "&acc=" + Acc, true); ajaxRequest.send(null); } //--> var Lat = "" var Long = "" var Acc = "" function handler(location) { var message = document.getElementById("message"); message.innerHTML ='<img src="http://maps.google.com/maps/api/staticmap?center=' + location.coords.latitude + ',' + location.coords.longitude + '&zoom=12&size=400x400&markers=color:blue|label:S|'+ location.coords.latitude +','+ location.coords.longitude +'&sensor=true" alt="some_text"/>'; message.innerHTML+="<p>Longitude: " + location.coords.longitude + "</p>"; message.innerHTML+="<p>Latitude: " + location.coords.latitude + "</p>"; message.innerHTML+="<p>Accuracy: " + location.coords.accuracy + "</p>"; Lat = location.coords.latitude Long = location.coords.longitude Acc = location.coords.accuracy } navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(handler); ajaxFunction(); </script> <div id="message">Location unknown</div> <a href="#" onclick="ajaxFunction();" >Send</a> </body> </html> Now this works if the user clicks on "Send" that I made, but I want it to do it without the user having to click send. If anyone could help me with this, or point me in a different direction that would be better then your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help. EDIT: The PHP side of this works, that is something I know about lol. So, basically what i'm doing here is hovering over the h2 heading and toggling the paragraph text. What i'm having a problem doing is changing the h3 headings so that they toggle the same way...is there a way to do this within this function without ids/classes? Code: <script type="text/javascript" src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-latest.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { $('#hdg').hover(function() { $('div[title=latin]').toggle(); $('div[title=english]').toggle(); $('#').html('<h3>English</h3>'); }); }); </script> Hello was following a tutorial online from bucky. and created a new example with different variables and such. My code in my eyes looks absolutely fine but however it does not display can anyone spot the problem? [code] <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <title>Untitled Document</title> <script type="text/javascript"> function cigerettes (brand, tar, price) { this.brand=brand; this.tar=tar; this.price=price; this.ReducedCost = discount; } function discount() { var reduction = 20; var finalCost = this.price - reduction; return finalCost; } var packet1 = new cigerettes("Mayfair", "2.0 mg", 399); var packet2 = new cigerettes("Sovereign", "3.4 mg", 425); </script> </head> <body> <script type="text/javascript"> document.write(packet1.brand() + " they contain " + packet1.tar() + "of tar " + "the packet cost me " + packet1.price() + ". With discount I got them for: " + packet1.ReducedCost()); </script> </body> </html> [code] Hi, I rarely use javascript so pardon my newbieness. I'm trying to create a function that is triggered by a <select> onchange event. It's supposed to save the newly selected value in a variable, then refer the user to a link location + variable. This is what I tried: Code: <script type="text/javascript"> function categoryRef() { var a = this.options[this.selectedIndex].value; document.location = 'recommend.php?cat=' + a; } </script> <select name="category" onChange="categoryRef()"> <?php $getCategoryQuery = "SELECT category FROM categories ORDER BY category"; $ConnectQuery = $database->query($getCategoryQuery); while($category = mysql_fetch_array($ConnectQuery)){ if($getCategory == $category['category']){ echo "<option selected='selected'>" . $category['category'] . "</option>"; } else{ echo "<option>" . $category['category'] . "</option>"; } } ?> </select> When I try this and change option nothing happens. Any pointers? Hi all, I am trying to pass some dynamic values for use with javascript or more specifically AJAX... I had a set up looking something like the following; Code: <input type="button" onclick="ajaxFunction()" value="Add Favourite"/> <input type="text" name="school_id" id="school_id" value="<?php echo $school_id; ?>" /> <input type="text" name="teacher_id" id="teacher_id" value="<?php echo $teacher_id; ?>" /> Code: <script language ="javascript" type="text/javascript"> <!-- //Browser Support Code function ajaxFunction(){ var ajaxRequest; // The variable that makes Ajax possible! try{ // Opera 8.0+, Firefox, Safari ajaxRequest = new XMLHttpRequest(); }catch (e){ // Internet Explorer Browsers try{ ajaxRequest = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP"); }catch (e) { try{ ajaxRequest = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); }catch (e){ // Something went wrong alert("Your browser broke!"); return false; } } } // Create a function that will receive data // sent from the server and will update // div section in the same page. ajaxRequest.onreadystatechange = function(){ if(ajaxRequest.readyState == 4){ var ajaxDisplay = document.getElementById('ajaxDiv'); ajaxDisplay.value = ajaxRequest.responseText; } } // Now get the value from user and pass it to // server script. var school_id = document.getElementById('school_id').value; var teacher_id = document.getElementById('teacher_id').value; var queryString = "?sid=" + school_id; queryString += "&tid=" + teacher_id; alert(queryString); ajaxRequest.open("GET", "ajax_insert_favourite.php" + queryString, true); ajaxRequest.send(null); } //--> </script> however because it is possible for there to be more than one button, i.e. many teachers can be returned the javascript would also output 1 and 1. I need someway of making this unique to the id's... I think that passing arguments/params might be the solution but I'm having a hard time implementing it; I've tried the following; Code: <input type="button" onclick="ajaxFunction('school_id','teacher_id')" value="Add Favourite"/> Code: <!-- //Browser Support Code function ajaxFunction(school_id,teacher_id){ But once I do this, it no longer even make the call. Can anyone advise here, I'm a relative newbie to javascript/AJAX etc. Many thanks, Greens85 |
