JavaScript - Chained Drop Down List, Last In Chain Show/hide A Div?
Hi Everyone! I would genuinely appreciate some help on this one.
I'm trying to combine a chained drop down list with the ability for the last selection to show/hide a div. I've researched and found ways to do both individually, but I'm hitting the wall when it comes to combining the javascript. This is how I'd like it to work: -- User selects from DropDown List 1. -- DropDown List 2 options appear based on the selection in 1. -- User selects from DropDown List 2, -- Appropriate div is shown. Here's the Javascript I'm using to show/hide a div: Code: function showDiv(divID) { var div = document.getElementById(divID); div.style.display = ""; //display div } function hideDiv(divID) { var div = document.getElementById(divID); div.style.display = "none"; // hide } function hideAllDivs() { //Loop through the seclect menu values and hide all var courseSelect = document.getElementById("courseSelect"); for (var i=0; i<=courseSelect.options.length -1; i++) { hideDiv(courseSelect.options[i].value); } } function toggle(showID){ hideAllDivs(); // Hide all showDiv(showID); // Show the one we asked for } Here's the Javascript for the chained drop down lists: Code: <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.3/jquery.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" defer> function cascadeSelect(parent, child){ var childOptions = child.find('option:not(.static)'); child.data('options',childOptions); parent.change(function(){ childOptions.remove(); child .append(child.data('options').filter('.sub_' + this.value)) .change(); }) childOptions.not('.static, .sub_' + parent.val()).remove(); } $(function(){ cascadeForm = $('.cascadeTest'); deptartmentSelect = cascadeForm.find('.deptartmentSelect'); courseSelect = cascadeForm.find('.courseSelect'); cascadeSelect(deptartmentSelect, courseSelect); }); And lastly, my HTML (simplified) Code: <form action="#" class="cascadeTest"> <table> <tr> <th>Organization:</th> <td><select name="deptartmentSelect" class="deptartmentSelect"> <option value="0">Select a Department</option> <option value="1">Dept A</option> <option value="2">Dept B</option> <option value="3">Dept C</option> </select></td> </tr> <tr> <th>Territory:</th> <td><select name="courseSelect" class="courseSelect" onChange="toggle(this.options[this.options.selectedIndex].value)"> <option value="0" class="static">- Courses -</option> <option value="A1" class="sub_1">Course A1</option> <option value="B1" class="sub_2">Course B1</option> <option value="C1" class="sub_3">Course C1</option> </select></td> </tr> </table> </form> <div id="A1" style="display:none;">I am Course A1</div> <div id="B1" style="display:none;">I am Course B1</div> <div id="C1" style="display:none;">I am Course C1</div> Thanks again in advance! Similar TutorialsI have a previous post where I asked about showing or hiding a div based on user answers in a form, and I got a great response that let me do that with radio buttons ... but can I do that with drop down lists too? Is there an equivalent to on click for drop down list? Thanks for all the help.
Hello i use a javascript to use drop down lists so i display the appropriate products to user. Atm no matter the user option i display 3 drop down lists in whole products. Lets say the drop down lists are like manufacturer/order by/sochet. When the user wish to see "processors" then the sochet list have values, but when he choose "printers" the sochet list is empty since the printers dont contan sochets. In this case i want to hide the sochet drop down list in order to be more familiar to the user is that possible? My js looks like this Code: <script type="text/javascript"> function showUser() { var q=document.getElementById("manuf"); var q_val = q.options[q.selectedIndex].value; var t=document.getElementById("soch"); var t_val = t.options[t.selectedIndex].value; var c=document.getElementById("order"); var c_val = c.options[c.selectedIndex].value; if (window.XMLHttpRequest) {// code for IE7+, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari xmlhttp=new XMLHttpRequest(); } else {// code for IE6, IE5 xmlhttp=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } xmlhttp.onreadystatechange=function() { var q=document.getElementById("manuf"); var q_val = q.options[q.selectedIndex].value; var t=document.getElementById("soch"); var t_val = t.options[t.selectedIndex].value; var c=document.getElementById("order"); var c_val = c.options[c.selectedIndex].value; if (xmlhttp.readyState==4 && xmlhttp.status==200) { document.getElementById("txtHint").innerHTML=xmlhttp.responseText; } } xmlhttp.open("GET","productsdata.php?q=" + q_val + "&t=" + t_val+"&c=" +c_val, true); xmlhttp.send(); } </script> and my drop down lists like PHP Code: <select name="products2" id="soch" onchange="showUser()"> <option value="" selected="selected">Sochet</option> <?php do { ?> <option value="<?php echo $row_sochet['sochet']?>"><?php echo $row_sochet['sochet']?></option> <?php } while ($row_sochet = mysql_fetch_assoc($sochet)); $rows = mysql_num_rows($sochet); if($rows > 0) { mysql_data_seek($sochet, 0); $row_sochet = mysql_fetch_assoc($sochet); } ?> </select> Hi Chaps, I have a dynamic list menu: PHP Code: <?php $currentCat = ''; $first = true ;?> <ul> <?php do { if ($currentCat != $row_rsCategory['catname']) { if (!$first) { echo "\n</ul>\n</li>\n"; } $currentCat = $row_rsCategory['catname']; ?> <li><?php echo $row_rsCategory['catname']; ?> <ul> <?php }?> <li><?php echo $row_rsCategory['galleryname']; ?></li> <?php $first = false; } while ($row_rsCategory = mysql_fetch_assoc($rsCategory)); ?> </ul> </li> </ul> I've tried looking for a show/hide script, to toggle category names/gallery names, but could only find ones that have static menu options, and have failed to edit existing code to fit....any help or guidence would be appreciated! Hi everyone, I'm new here, I actually found this site by searching for the code I have a question for. I'm trying to show/hide different drop down selectors, depending on what is chosen in another drop down selector. I modified a script (I found he http://www.codingforums.com/showthread.php?t=98406) in a way that I thought would work, but its not. Can anyone help me with what I'm doing wrong? Here is my page: http://www.leatherexpressonline.com/...er/testing.php Here is my javascript: http://pastie.org/3344253 And my drop downs: http://pastie.org/3344258 Also, I don't want the drop downs (ids: grade1000color, grade1500color, grade2000color, grade2500color, grade3000color, grade5000color) to be shown when the page is first loaded. Only when the correct option is chosen on the drop down. So I'm guessing I should add a display:none style to those drop downs, then have them shown on the javascript? Thanks so much for the help I am using the following code to show / hide form elements within a div based upon the drop down choice. Does anyone know how this code can be amended to use multiple drop downs within one form? Code: <html> <head> <title>Show and Hide</title> <script> //********************************************* // Function that Shows an HTML element //********************************************* function showDiv(divID) { var div = document.getElementById(divID); div.style.display = ""; //display div } //********************************************* // Function that Hides an HTML element //********************************************* function hideDiv(divID) { var div = document.getElementById(divID); div.style.display = "none"; // hide } //***************************************************************************** // Function that Hides all the Div elements in the select menu Value //***************************************************************************** function hideAllDivs() { //Loop through the seclect menu values and hide all var selectMenu = document.getElementById("selectMenu"); for (var i=0; i<=selectMenu.options.length -1; i++) { hideDiv(selectMenu.options[i].value); } } //********************************************* // Main function that calls others to toggle divs //********************************************* function toggle(showID) { hideAllDivs(); // Hide all showDiv(showID); // Show the one we asked for } </script> </head> <body onload="hideAllDivs();"> <select id="selectMenu" onchange="toggle(this.options[this.options.selectedIndex].value)"> <option value="formNumber1"> Show Form 1 </option> <option value="formNumber2"> Show Form 2 </option> <option value="formNumber3"> Show Form 3 </option> <option value="formNumber4"> Show Form 4 </option> </select> <div id="formNumber1"> I am Form Number one. Any content within this div will be showed</div> <div id="formNumber2"> I am Form Number two. Any content within this div will be showed</div> <div id="formNumber3"> I am Form Number three. Any content within this div will be showed</div> <div id="formNumber4"> I am Form Number four. Any content within this div will be showed</div> </body> </html> Thanks in advance! I am trying to create 2 different drop down menus which are chained. First drop down menu: options 1, 2, 3, and 4 Second drop down menu: options 1, 2, 3 and 4 However for the first drop down menu, if you choose the number then that number cannot be selected again on the second drop down menu. So if i pick 4 on the first drop down. then only 1, 2, and 3 should show up on the second drop down OR if you pick 4 on the second drop down it gives you an error saying you selected that value. Here is the complicated part that I cannot figure out. I want each drop down menus on two different pages and not on the same page. So after you select the submit button on the first drop down it should go to another page with the second drop down.. Has anyone seen this before. if you can give me some tips or show me how its done or even a webpage that has already implemented this i would appreciate it. Thank you! Hi all, I have been struggling on a bit of code for a while now. I need to populate a second drop down list (Region) based upon the selection of the first (County). I have found a piece of code that works on its own and have adapted to suit my needs - see below. However, when I drop it into my main page the javascript is not working. It's because of the formObject but I just don't know enough to resolve this! Furthermore, I need the textboxes the user has already completed in the form to retain their value once the javascript kicks in as the completed form will submit to a database. This piece of code is working well . . . . Code: <?php $link = mysql_connect('myhost', 'myusername', 'mypassword') or die('Could not connect: ' . mysql_error()); mysql_select_db('mydatabase') or die('Could not select database'); if(isset($_GET["County"]) && is_numeric($_GET["County"])) { $County = $_GET["County"]; } if(isset($_GET["Region"]) && is_numeric($_GET["Region"])) { $Region = $_GET["Region"]; } ?> <script language="JavaScript"> function autoSubmit() { var formObject = document.forms['theForm']; formObject.submit(); } </script> <form name="theForm" method="get"> <!-- County SELECTION BASED ON city VALUE --> <?php ?> <select name="County" onChange="autoSubmit();"> <option value=''</option> <?php //POPULATE DROP DOWN MENU WITH COUNTRIES FROM A GIVEN city $sql = "SELECT * FROM county_regions"; $counties = mysql_query($sql,$link); while($row = mysql_fetch_array($counties)) { echo ("<option value=\"$row[CountyID]\" " . ($Region == $row["CountyID"]? " selected" : "") . ">$row[Region]</option>"); } ?> </select> <?php } ?> What follows is my form where the javascript is not working - edited quite a bit to save on space! Code: var groupId=obj.id.substring(0, 1); var indx=obj.id.substring(obj.id.indexOf('_')+1); var id=indx.substring(0, indx.length-1); var anotherTab = (indx.indexOf('a') >= 0) ? id + 'b' : id + 'a'; document.getElementById(groupId+'tab_' + indx).className = 'selected'; document.getElementById(groupId+'tab_' + anotherTab).className = ''; if (indx==id+'a') { show (groupId+'baseballInfo_'+id); hide (groupId+'footballInfo_'+id); hide (groupId+'soccerInfo_'+id); } else if (if (indx==id+'a') { hide (groupId+'baseballInfo_'+id); show (groupId+'footballInfo_'+id); hide (groupId+'soccerInfo_'+id); } else { hide(groupId+'baseballInfo_'+id); hide (groupId+'footballInfo_'+id); show(groupId+'soccerInfo_'+id); } Hi, I'll explain my situation: I'm completely new to javascript so what i want to do is make a script that shows a specific div when the visitor is at the homepage but hide it when hes in another page of my website. i've read some people trying to explain it to someone else but it seems that i need to learn many aspects of the javascript language to edit it to my needs. I'm a med student and im really tight in my schedule and have almost no extra time to sit and read about javascript just so i can do this one specific thing. Would you please help me out? The problem is: This div is not a child of the menu, so i can't do it through simple hover and display css functions. That's the menu. This is what should appear when you're hovering one of the items. Also, I want a different div for the different menu anchors, because I dont think wordpress can read the category by a hover. And, if this wasn't enough, I have no idea how to build this so you can actually from the menu anchor to the subnav without it disappearing when you're not above the anchor. Here's the website:www.chabuya.net I already tried hundreds of show/hide scripts, solving this via css but nothing works for me. I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks in advance, Kevin |
