JavaScript - Javascript Headlines...straight Out Of The Book, But Answer Not Displaying On Page
I typed this code straight out of the book and it just doesn't seem to work. I have the headlines on the left side and when clicked the contents of the headline is supposed to show up in the text box on the right. Well, needless to say, nothing appears. Please someone tell me what I am doing wrong. I am not the only person in the class having this issue. Thanks a million.

I am looking for something super duper hard core. I would love it to have documentation galore that includes all of the AJAX and DOM and XML. You know... like a javascript BIBLE. Something thick and comforting. Something that makes you feel all warm and toasty inside just knowing that it is there. So if I start running into some problem I can just glance at the book and rest assured that if the problem exculates not to fear. I have .... THE BOOK. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Michael Hi, I have a very old book on JavaScript, and just wondering if it would be wise to start from it. The book is: SAMS Teach yourself JavaScript in 24 hours - Second Edition (covers JavaScript 1.5) Let me know guys because I can get cracking on with it if so! What I need to know is whether or not JS has been updated since? Would like to start learning JavaScript and would appreciate any books based on JavaScript that forum members would care to recommend. Thanks all
I have come to the conclusion that this book title sux "New Perspectives on JavaScript, 2nd Edition " Is there a better book I can use where I can copy the sample programs that the book uses, that actually has good modern javascript technique, and has the other code that goes along with it like the html, the css, and the .jpgs all on the cd that comes with the book or something? "Professional JavaScript for Web Developers (Wrox Programmer to Programmer)" by Nicholas C. Zakas is a good book title it definitely clarified that crappy text book that my university gave me, but I'm ready to take the next step and start using sample code and apply the concepts I learned from that book. Please recommend anything I would need to be ubber programmers like all of you guys.
This is my first post on this website. It has a very clean design to it. I think I am going to enjoy myself here :P I am taking a class. And I am very sorry if this post does not belong here. It is a JavaScript class so, my guess was here. My professor has giving us three page sources from random sites. I can not figure this out though. This question has a page source from some random math test website. What we are to do with this page source is to figure out the ten correct answers to the question in the page source. No, not by doing the math, but figuring out where in the page source it is hiding. I can not find them for the life of me. I got the other two problems, but of course this is the hardest one Thank you for your help I put the page source in a notepad attach to this post. (My professor has removed parts of codes that included the name of the website he had gotten it off of. He also said the page source may need to be decoded.) I think I found what I am looking for. If you look where question one starts. Itll have <input type="hidden" name="corAns" value="27478035"> But, the answers are A, B, C, and D which would be 1, 2, 3, and 4 for D. So is <input type="hidden" name="numAns" value="4"> The correct line? I think that is to easier. He said this assignment was the hardest out of the three, and well, that was to easy? I have to take more javascript programming classes and I'm really not good at it. I desperately need help. I own Visual Basic, but it's a little difficult to use. What is the best book, online resource, and software for programming in javascript?
I have been asking around other forums for this question....no one seems to be able to help. But reading through here you guys seem quite a bit smarter and I'm sure you can point me in the right direction What I need is a simple loading page that is for LOOKS only...the site I am redirecting to is very small and does not take very long to load...but for marketing purposes a loading page will make my business strategy look much more legit. I am linking to an affiliate page with a discount link. The problem is most people aren't actually sure if the discount link works...so I want to make a loading page where it says something like "Activating Discount". SO basically I have: My website>>>(link)>>>HTML Loading Page>>>(Redirects after 5 sec or so)>>>Afilliate Landing Page I'll put a loading wheel on the page like this one: But what I really want it to do is switch the messages its displaying so maybe it says "Loading Site Content" for 1 second then switches to "Activating Discount" for 1 second then switches again to "Validating Referrer" or something like that. THANK you so much for any help you can give me You guys rock! My code im using is as below. The idea of it is to enter a number, then a second, and see if it a factor of the first. If the remainder that is worked out is zero, it will display the answer _ is a factor of _. If the remainder does not equal to zero, it will display the answer _ is not a factor of _. I know that some numbers may still be a factor, but Im only working with zero. Im new to this code so have no knowledge of it, and as far as I can tell, its just ignoring the "if" part of the code and going straight to else. Hope someone can help! <title>task 5</title> <head> <script type="text/javascript"> function Factors() { var x; var y; var value; x= prompt ("Enter number"); y= prompt ("And divide by? (less than first number)"); value= (x/y+'<BR>Remainder is '+x%y); ///document.write(x/y+'<BR>Remainder is '+x%y); //document.write(value); if (value == 0){ alert(y+" is a factor"); } else { alert(y+ " is a not factor"); } } </script> </head> <body onload="Factors()"> </body> I am one problem. When i click a link a some information in html is to be displayed on the screen. I have written code for that. But before i click the link i am able to display the content. Please look into my code and give some suggestions: <html> <head> </head> <body> <center> <table> <tr> <td> <a href="javascript:Chg1()">Add Required (Features)</a> </td> <td> <a href="javascript:chg2()">Add via Search</a> </td> <td> <a href="javascript:Chg3()">Add via List</a> </td> </tr> </table> </center> function chg2() { document.write(<b> Type Model Feature Relationship Search and Add </b>);s <table> <tr> <td> Type<input type="text" id="type" name="type" value=""> </td> <td> Document Number<input type="text" id="doc" name="doc" value=""> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Model<input type="text" id="model" name="model" value=""> </td> <td> Promoted<input type="text" id="promoted" name="promoted" value=""> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Feature<input type="text" id="feature" name="feature" value=""> </td> </tr> </table> } </script> </body> I have to display a div before firing a sync ajax in javascript div is getting displayed in firefox but not in IE and chrome. I need to basically display a download bar to indicate the user that the request is in progress Hi guys, I already posted this but it hasn't been approved by a mod or the mods are all at lunch or something lol. I want to display an image using javascript instead of HTML (or use javascript to change the HTML code dynamically when an update is made). I have created an XML file, which contains text data which is displayed in HTML by using Javascript. What I am having trouble with is getting Javascript to grab the image URL from the XML file, and then display that image in the correct div. How does one show an image by using javascript? and how do you get javascript to get the url from the XML? The following is my Javascript code which grabs the text from the XML and displays it in the HTML; Code: <script type="text/javascript"> var xmlDoc; <!-- if (window.XMLHttpRequest) { xhttp=new XMLHttpRequest(); } else // Internet Explorer 5/6 { xhttp=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } xhttp.open("GET","SDS.xml",false); xhttp.send(""); xmlDoc=xhttp.responseXML; var x=xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName("NEWS"); i=0; function display() { title=(x[i].getElementsByTagName("TITLE")[0].childNodes[0].nodeValue.fontsize("5").fontcolor("white").bold()); date=(x[i].getElementsByTagName("DATE")[0].childNodes[0].nodeValue.fontsize("2").fontcolor("white").bold()); stitle=(x[i].getElementsByTagName("STITLE")[0].childNodes[0].nodeValue.fontsize("3").fontcolor("white").italics()); story=(x[i].getElementsByTagName("STORY")[0].childNodes[0].nodeValue.fontsize("3").fontcolor("white")); txt= title + "<br />" + date + "<br />" + stitle + "<br />" + story; document.getElementById("show").innerHTML=txt; } //--> </script> And this is the XML file; Code: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <BULLETIN> <NEWS> <PIC>"newssmall.jpg"</PIC> <DATE>14/3/2010</DATE> <TITLE>News Story 1</TITLE> <STITLE>This is a short sentence to describe the story in brief</STITLE> <STORY>This is the text of the news story</STORY> </NEWS> </BULLETIN> So what I want to do is create a function that grabs the url (relative) from the PIC tag in the XML ("newssmall.jpg") and then uses this URL to display the image on the HTML page. This way, only the XML needs updating when updating the news section of the site. Thanks for helping if you can, Dan Im coding a chat system, but the main thing which I cannot get working which is stopping me from doing this is displaying the data from the database. I have made a test XML document for the time being so that I can get the JavaScript/AJAX working properly, then I will figure out why my PHP isnt generating the XML file properly. Here is my XML document: Code: <?xml version="1.0" ?> <root> <message id="0"> <sender>martynball</sender> <receiver>someoneelse</receiver> <time>154375342</time> <text>Testing an XML document and seeing if the JavaScript will display it properly. If so then there is a problem with the PHP.</text> </message> </root> And here is my JavaScript/AJAX, for some reason there is NOTHING being displayed in the div which has the correct ID. Code: <script type="text/javascript"> function getXmlHttpRequestObject() { if (window.XMLHttpRequest) { // code for IE7+, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari return new XMLHttpRequest(); } if (window.ActiveXObject) { // code for IE6, IE5 return new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } return null; } //Make variables for later use var lastMess = 0; var sendReq = getXmlHttpRequestObject(); var receiveReq = getXmlHttpRequestObject(); var mTimer; function getMessage() { if (receiveReq.readyState == 4 || receiveReq.readyState == 0) { //var url = "scripts/get_data.php?uid=<?=$_SESSION['uid']?>&m=" + lastMess + "&chat=1"; var url = "testXMLdoc.xml"; receiveReq.open("GET", url, true); receiveReq.onreadystatechange = manageMessage; receiveReq.send(null); lastMess++; } } function manageMessage() { if (receiveReq.readyState == 4) { var xmldoc = receiveReq.responseText; var chat_div = document.getElementById('chat'); var msg_nodes = xmldoc.getElementByTagName("message"); var n_msg = message_nodes.length; for (i = 0; i < n_msg; i++) { var sender_node = msg_node[i].getElementByTagName["sender"]; var receiver_node = msg_node[i].getElementByTagName["receiver"]; var time_node = msg_node[i].getElementByTagName["time"]; var text_node = msg_node[i].getElementByTagName["text"]; chat_div.innerHTML = "He <br />" + sender_node[0].firstChild.nodeValue + "<br />"; chat_div.innerHTML = reciever_node[0].firstChild.nodeValue + "<br />"; chat_div.innerHTML =time_node[0].firstChild.nodeValue + "<br />"; chat_div.innerHTML = text_node[0].firstChild.nodeValue + "<br />"; } } } </script> Also, I put a alert under the manageMessage() function before the IF statement and that gets displayed. Hello, I am building a charirty website and having a great deal of trouble with a page that has a Piecemaker slideshow and a fancybox modal window. My group is working on a basic document management system that includes four users. staff member, department director, division chief and clerk. The programming language that we used is PHP. when staff member logs-in on his homepage and uploads a file he must choose reviewer from a dropdown menu that consists of dep. director and div. chief. When he clicks the upload button the homepage of who he chose as reviewer should receive a prompt/alert box upon log-in saying "you have a document to review". For example: if he chose division chief as the reviewer when the person logs-in on his homepage a prompt/alert should display that he has something to review. The code for uploading file is already up and working. We are looking for advice on how to integrate javascript in this system. Especially in the prompt part. thanks for your ideas. Hello, I have an html script and a .php script. The .php requests a random word from a table of words in a mysql database. I wrote a html form to display the requested word in a text box. Here is my html file: Code: <html> <body> <script type="text/javascript"> function myfunction() { var xmlhttp; if(window.XMLHttpRequest) { xmlhttp= newHttpRequest(); } else { xmlhttp=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } xmlhttp.onreadystatechange=function() { if(xmlhttp.readyState==4) { document.myLingo.word.value=xmlhttp.responseText; } } xmlhttp.open("GET", "get_Word.php",true); xmlhttp.send(null); } </script> <form name="myLingo"> <input type="button" name="button" value="New Word" onClick="myFunction();" /> <input type="text" name="word" /> </form> </body> </html> and here is my .php script: Code: <?php $con=mysql_connect('localhost', 'xxxx', 'xxxx'); if (!$con) { die('Could not connect: '.mysql_error()); } mysql_select_db("my_lingo", $con); $sql=mysql_query("SELECT `word` FROM `words` ORDER BY RAND()") or trigger_error('Error: ' .mysql_error()); $word=mysql_fetch_array($sql); echo $word[0]; mysql_close($con); ?> When I run this in Internet Explorer; I get a error that is asking for an object on line 32 which is the line that has my button in the javascript. When i run it in firefox, I don't receive an error, but the page still does nothing. Any suggestions? The main function of the page is that, when I click the button, it's supposed to return me a random word from the .php script Thanks, jcjst21 I am currently using the JavaScript Light Box found on; http://www.huddletogether.com/projects/lightbox2/ I was wondering if it is possible, or easy enough to create something alike the one found on; http://www.whsmith.co.uk/Support/Hel...ffiliates.aspx when you click on; > How to become an affiliate > Complete the OMGuk.com affiliate application form. Many Thanks, Tim I'm very new at JavaScript and I'm trying to get each of the if statements below in a text text box with the result depending on the answer of the equation. However i can't figure out a way to allow the user to click a button to to show the result in a text box. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated. Code: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML> <HEAD> <TITLE> New Document </TITLE> <script type="text/javascript"> function calculate() { A = document.form1.text2.value B =(parseInt(A ) * 52) D= (parseInt(B ) * 0.015 ) if ( B <= 6000){ tax = 0;} else if (B <= 37001){ tax = (B - 6000) * .15; } else if (B<= 80001){ tax = (B - 37000) * .30 + (37000 - 6000) * .15; } else if (B <= 180001){ tax = (B- 80000) * .37 + (80000- 37000) * .30 + (37000 - 6000) * .15; } else tax = (B - 180000)* .45 + (180000 - 80000 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting**************180000 - 80000******end_of_the_skype_highlighting) * .37 + (80000- 37000) * .30 + (37000 - 6000) * .15;} </script> </HEAD> <BODY> <form name="form1"> Weekly Salary: <INPUT TYPE="TEXT" NAME="text2"> <INPUT TYPE="BUTTON" VALUE="SUBMIT" Onclick="calculate();"> </BODY> </HTML> using a javascript function to determine if a string is all digits or not and return result based off the decision. if it is all digits, mask all digits except the first two, if not all digits just return the string. these are the snippets however i am not seeing anything returned in the column Code: <script > var start = function RenderRC(CodeOwner) { var Rcode = CodeOwner.toString(); var pattern = new RegExp("^\d{2,}$ "); if (Rcode.match(pattern)) { if (Rcode.length > 2) { var newcode = Rcode.substr(0, 2) + Array(Rcode.length - 2 + 1).join("*"); return newcode; } } else { return Rcode; } }; </script> <ext:RecordField Name="CodeOwner" /> <ext:Column Header="<%$ Resources:Text, CodeOwner %>"DataIndex="CodeOwner" Width="110" > <Renderer Fn ="start" /> </ext:Column> Howdy all. I have Win 7, IE9. I have a HTML file on my hard drive, with Javascript within. When I load the page, it keeps popping up Do u want to allow this content, I have to click to allow. I want to stop this, and after doing some searching I found the setting in Internet Options, Advanced - "Allow active content to run in files on my computer". Perfect. Doesnt work. When i check this box, the page loads without the warning, but then the Javascript just doesnt work. Getting quite annoying, because this file is my home page. Any help would be great! I'm working with greasymonkey scripts. Firefox JS console would always display GM script errors, but all of the sudden it stopped doing that. Script just won't load and no errors are displayed. I didn't touch any settings, yesterday they were showing fine, today none are displayed. Would appreciate any help.
