JavaScript - Is There A Named Arguments Scope?
Let's say I'm defining an object and I want the constructor to take one input and ten save it. I'd like to do something like this:
function apple(color) { this.color = arguments.color; } But of course that doesn't work because arguments isn't a scope. My question is, is there a scope I can use. What I've been doing instead is this: function apple(new_color) {this.color = new_color;} But that just seems less than perfectly pretty. Similar TutorialsHi guys! As title says I need to create variable named with value of other variable! So is that possible? What exactly I need is something like this: Code: for(var i=0; i<11; i++){ var Img[i] = "" } I have a question about proper syntax in iterative functions. I want to compare one master array to a large set (180+) of other arrays. The large set of arrays to be compared are systematically named (scorespec1, scorespec2, scorespec3...). Each comparison will be made not one-to-one but through an algorithm and then have the results stored in another set of arrays that are also systematically named for later query. I not worried about getting the algorithm right just yet. I'm just not sure of the proper syntax to iterate through my arrays. For instance, this is but one of the syntax structures I have tried but failed to get working: Code: for (i=01;i=186;i++){ if (scorespec+(i)[04]=unknownspec[16]){ resultarray+(i)[01]=true;} else{ resultarray+(i)[01]=false;}} My main problem here is I don't know how to structure the syntax to include the counter variable in my for-loop in the variable name. I've tried a variety of different syntaxes in addition to what I show above and it just doesn't seem to work right. What syntax should I be using? Hi I am trying to create a page that has a couple of pop-up overlay boxes from a couple of links, Everything is working ok I think except for a problem on a browser resize. The original code I found : ( http://kalyanchakravarthy.net/?p=208 ) was created or only one window so the resize code controls both windows, when I think need each one controlled separately. The resize code will make a closed overlay box appear. Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <script language="javascript" src="jquery-1.2.6.min.js"></script> <!--script language="javascript" src="jquery-schedule-overlay.js"></script--> <style type="text/css"> .bgCover { background:#000; position:absolute; left:0; top:0; display:none; overflow:hidden } .overlayBox { border:1px solid #09F; position:absolute; display:none; width:730px; height:600px; background:#fff; } .overlayBoxb { border:1px solid #09F; position:absolute; display:none; width:730px; height:600px; background:#fff; } .overlayContent { padding:0px; } .overlayContentb { padding:0px; } .closeLink { float:right; color:red; text-decoration:none; } a:hover { text-decoration:none; } </style></head> <body> <div class="bgCover"> </div> <a href="#" class="launchLink">Launch Window</a> <div class="overlayBox"> <div class="overlayContent"> <a href="#" class="closeLink">Close</a> <img src="Session-A-mock-up.jpg" alt="Session A Schedule " /> </div></div> <br /><br /> <a href="#" class="launchLinkb">Launch Window 2</a> <div class="overlayBoxb"> <div class="overlayContentb"> <a href="#" class="closeLink">Close</a> <img src="Session-B-mock-up.jpg" alt="Session B Schedule "/> </div></div> <script language="javascript"> function showOverlayBox() { //if box is not set to open then don't do anything if( window.isOpen == false ) return; // set the properties of the overlay box, the left and top positions $('.overlayBox').css({ display:'block', left:( $(window).width() - $('.overlayBox').width() )/2, top:( $(window).height() - $('.overlayBox').height() )/2 -20, position:'absolute' }); // set the window background for the overlay. i.e the body becomes darker $('.bgCover').css({ display:'block', width: $(window).width(), height:$(window).height(), }); function showOverlayBoxb() { windowb=window.open; //if box is not set to open then don't do anything if( windowb.isOpen == false ) return; // set the properties of the overlay box, the left and top positions $('.overlayBoxb').css({ display:'block', left:( $(window).width() - $('.overlayBoxb').width() )/2, top:( $(window).height() - $('.overlayBoxb').height() )/2 -20, position:'absolute' }); // set the window background for the overlay. i.e the body becomes darker $('.bgCover').css({ display:'block', width: $(window).width(), height:$(window).height(), }); } function doOverlayOpen() { //set status to open isOpen = true; showOverlayBox(); $('.bgCover').css({opacity:0}).animate( {opacity:0.5, backgroundColor:'#000'} ); // dont follow the link : so return false. return false; } function doOverlayOpenb() { //set status to open isOpen = true; showOverlayBoxb(); $('.bgCover').css({opacity:0}).animate( {opacity:0.5, backgroundColor:'#000'} ); // dont follow the link : so return false. return false; } function doOverlayClose() { //set status to closed isOpen = false; $('.overlayBox,.overlayBoxb').css( 'display', 'none' ); // now animate the background to fade out to opacity 0 // and then hide it after the animation is complete. $('.bgCover').animate( {opacity:0}, null, null, function() { $(this).hide(); } ); } // if window is resized then reposition the overlay box $(window).bind('resize',showOverlayBox) ; $(window).bind('resize',showOverlayBoxb) ; // activate when the link with class launchLink is clicked $('a.launchLink').click( doOverlayOpen ); // activate when the link with class launchLink2 is clicked $('a.launchLinkb').click( doOverlayOpenb ); // close it when closeLink is clicked $('a.closeLink').click( doOverlayClose ); </script> </body> </html> Write a program named Median.java that asks the user for three integers and outputs the median. I have to do this using if else statements. It seems really easy, but I can't figure it out. Help! Hi all, I am trying to pass some dynamic values for use with javascript or more specifically AJAX... I had a set up looking something like the following; Code: <input type="button" onclick="ajaxFunction()" value="Add Favourite"/> <input type="text" name="school_id" id="school_id" value="<?php echo $school_id; ?>" /> <input type="text" name="teacher_id" id="teacher_id" value="<?php echo $teacher_id; ?>" /> Code: <script language ="javascript" type="text/javascript"> <!-- //Browser Support Code function ajaxFunction(){ var ajaxRequest; // The variable that makes Ajax possible! try{ // Opera 8.0+, Firefox, Safari ajaxRequest = new XMLHttpRequest(); }catch (e){ // Internet Explorer Browsers try{ ajaxRequest = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP"); }catch (e) { try{ ajaxRequest = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); }catch (e){ // Something went wrong alert("Your browser broke!"); return false; } } } // Create a function that will receive data // sent from the server and will update // div section in the same page. ajaxRequest.onreadystatechange = function(){ if(ajaxRequest.readyState == 4){ var ajaxDisplay = document.getElementById('ajaxDiv'); ajaxDisplay.value = ajaxRequest.responseText; } } // Now get the value from user and pass it to // server script. var school_id = document.getElementById('school_id').value; var teacher_id = document.getElementById('teacher_id').value; var queryString = "?sid=" + school_id; queryString += "&tid=" + teacher_id; alert(queryString); ajaxRequest.open("GET", "ajax_insert_favourite.php" + queryString, true); ajaxRequest.send(null); } //--> </script> however because it is possible for there to be more than one button, i.e. many teachers can be returned the javascript would also output 1 and 1. I need someway of making this unique to the id's... I think that passing arguments/params might be the solution but I'm having a hard time implementing it; I've tried the following; Code: <input type="button" onclick="ajaxFunction('school_id','teacher_id')" value="Add Favourite"/> Code: <!-- //Browser Support Code function ajaxFunction(school_id,teacher_id){ But once I do this, it no longer even make the call. Can anyone advise here, I'm a relative newbie to javascript/AJAX etc. Many thanks, Greens85 Should be simple, but I'm having a complete brain fart. I need to call a function, with a parameter that triggers something relative to that parameter. Pseudo Example Code: function respawn(n) { case 1 //respawn monster1 code case 2 //respawn monster 2 code case 3 //respawn monster 3 code } if(killed monster1) {respawn(1)} //respawn(monster1) is what I want to do if(killed monster2) {respawn(2)}//respawn(monster2) is what I want to do if(killed monster3) {respawn(3)}//respawn(monster3) is what I want to do I can... Code: function respawn1(){ //respawn monster1 code } function respawn2() { //respawn monster2 code } function respawn3() { //respawn monster3 code } if(killed monster1) {respawn1()} if(killed monster2) {respawn2()} if(killed monster3) {respawn2()} but if I have 10+ monsters I just figured a case structure would be good, or passing the monster to respawn to a single respawn() function......but all the switch examples I could find were based on dateTime which gave case 1-7 based on what day it was, and didn't show how you set your own cases like monster1, monster2, monster3.... I know this is a basic concept...I've read about functions he http://www.quirksmode.org/js/function.html and at w3schools of course but can't figure out how to apply it to my situation Thanks I want to use the new keyword to instantiate an object. The catch is I want to pass in variable length arguments. Given: Code: function Foo () { this.args = Array.prototype.join.call (arguments); } var args = ["arg0", "arg1", "arg2"]; The following don't work (though I understand why): Code: new Foo.apply (null, args); new (Foo.apply (null, args)); (new Foo).apply (null, args); Any ideas on how to do what I want without modifying Foo's source code? I am a newbie and am writing a function. I want the function to refer to an arrays elements to get the biggest, but I dont know how to do this. Here is the code: Code: function unique(first, second, third) { var answer; if (first > second) { answer = first - second; } if (second > third) { answer = second - third; } if (third > first) { answer = third - first; } return answer; } //function call unique (digitArray(0,1,2)); what I am trying to do, is get the array elements to be called and give me an answer. Will I need to add the array to the function? It is further down the code after the function at the moment. Or will I need to add the array elements to the function? Hope it is clear i've got a project to be done using javascript and html....i don't know how to pass the arguments from <input type="text"> to the javascript function i'm using in my program. i just want the javascript script to calculate the input given by the user and return the answer. here is the program: Code: <html> <head> <title> Taxi Fare </title> <script lang="text/javascript"> // calculates taxi fare based upon miles traveled // and the hour of the day in military time (0-23). var taxiFare = function (milesTraveled, pickupTime) { var baseFare = 2.50; var costPerMile = 2.00; var nightSurcharge = 0.50; // 8pm to 6am, every night var cost = baseFare + (costPerMile * milesTraveled); // add the nightSurcharge to the cost if it is after // 8pm or before 6am if (pickupTime >= 20 || pickupTime < 6) { cost += nightSurcharge; } return cost; }; </script> </head> <body> <form> <input type="text" onclick="taxiFare()" value="Call function"> <input type="Submit" value="OK" onclick="taxiFare()"> <input type="reset" value="Clear"> </form> <script type="text/javascript"> document.write("Your taxi fare is ₹" + taxiFare(5,2)); </script> </body> </html> pls it would be of great help. Thanx. Hope you can help. I'm currently building a website and trying to integrate a javascript image 'tranisition' effect into mm_swapimage and failing. My knowledge of Javascipt is limited but without knowing the 'arguments' for mm_swapimage, it's impossible (looks similar to vb, but can't find an answer anywhere) I want the effect to work on a 'timed' event rather than 'OnMouseOver' so have added script to change that (which is probably the issue!) I can get both to work idependantly but not together. I've simplified the page and pasted the code below, as it stands the 'effect' works, but it only uses the primary image, not the other image in the array. I'm using DW CS4 and the transition extension is called FlevOOware. Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.0/jquery.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function(){ var theSame = 1; $("input[name='thesame']").change(function(){ theSame = $(this).is(":checked") ? 1 : 0; alert("a"+theSame) }); if(theSame == 1){ $(".check_list input").change(function(){ alert("b"+theSame) }); } }); </script> </head> <body> <input type="checkbox" name="thesame">same <br> <div class="check_list"> <input type="checkbox" name="son">ppp <input type="checkbox" name="son">ppp <input type="checkbox" name="son">ppp </div> </body> </html> I don't really understand why a.d() fails in the following, or rather why a.d can't access local vars in a, or how to rewrite this so that it can PHP Code: window.a = (function () { var b = '<br>hello '; var c = function (){ document.write(b+'from c') // in this scope we can access the local vars of a }; c() // this will work and write hello from c document.write(b) // this will work and write hello from b return{c:c} })(); a.d = function () { document.write(b+'from d') // even though as far as I can tell I have added d to the object a, } // this still can't access the local vars of a... why not? how can I change that? a.d() // doesn't work :( a.c() // this works too because we returned c in a's return statement I have a popup in one of my pages which is populated via AJAX call with a list of click-able options, this is all good, however I am now trying to display a javascript tree in the popup but it can not seem to 'see' the javascript routine that creates the tree, even if I hard code that into the popup itself, so the tree starts with d=new dTree() , and javasript is telling me that 'd' is undefined. the code works fine in a regular webpage but when pulled up in a AJAX generated popup it cant see squat? I tried parent.dTree() etc but to no avail. Is this because the javascript is loaded after the main page load via AJAX? if so is it accessible in anyway ? Hi there - this seems like it should be an obvious problem - can anyone spot it? I have an object, declared this way: Code: var FK_gid = new picChooser('FK_gid', FK_gidArray); FK_gid.init(); and a select group like this: Code: <select id = "FK_gid" name = "FK_gid"> <option value="none" selected="true" >None</option> <option value="335" >pics/zoobins.jpg</option> etc. etc. </select> picChooser in construction sets the onchange of the select group like this: Code: this.list = document.getElementById('FK_gid'); this.list.setAttribute("onchange", "FK_gid.displayImage();"); and the object's displayImage(); is like this: Code: this.displayImage = function () { this.clearImage(); if (this.list.selectedIndex != 0) { pic = new Image(); pic.src = this.reformat(this.list.options[this.list.selectedIndex].innerHTML); img = document.createElement("img"); img.src = pic.src; this.preview.appendChild(img); } } But whenever I choose something else off the list I get this error message: Code: TypeError: Result of expression 'FK_gid.displayImage' [undefined] is not a function. It's bizarre because when I type FK_gid.displayImage(); into Safari's dynamic console the function works perfectly... Any ideas? Thanks Edd Hi all, I have a newbie question. I have just started working with javascript and would appreciate some guidance. I have a webpage and there are products for sale on it(this is not live it is merely being used as practice project). Beside each product is a description a price and an 'add to cart' button. My cart is simply a div with an id of 'cart' and it has a text box within it. I need the product name to be displayed within the div (this, I have working), I also need to display the product price in the text box once the button(add to cart ) for that particular product has been pressed. Also when the button for another product is pressed, I want the cost/value for that product to be added to the other value and displayed in the text box in the cart div... I apologise for rambling on but this is the best way of me explaining my needs.... Here's where i am right now.. The HTML snippet Code: <div id ="cart"> <p><img src="images/shopping-cart.png" alt ="cart"/>Your Cart</p> <div id="sum"><!--(this is the div where the total goes)--> <input type="text" id="total" value="0" /><p>€ Your Total <input type="reset" value = "reset" /></p> </div> </div> <h2 id ="black">Blackcurrent<br /></h2> <p>€ 12.00 <input type = "submit" value ="add to cart" onClick = "shoppingCart('Blackcurrent',12)" /></p> And the javascript: Code: alert ("working"); function shoppingCart (itemName, itemValue) { /* var thePrice = Number(itemValue); return thePrice;*/ document.getElementById ("cart").innerHTML += itemName + "<br/>"; document.getElementById('total').value = Number(document.getElementById('total').value) + itemValue; } I hope i have posted correctly and am aware that i have only posted a segment of the HTML.. Please let me know if you need any more code or info.. Thanks a lot in advance for any help... I don't even know where to begin with this one. I don't know the terminology for what I am trying to do here, and the sample code is too big and cluttered to post. So I put together the following to illustrate the structure of the object that I am trying to overcome. I have a method chain within an object, and I need to override one of the methods, but when I do so I loose access to the private methods and properties of it's containing object... I googled this for several hours, and the best that I can come up with is that I need to somehow use call() to access the scope of another object. But I don't understand call() or apply() at all, and I've read many tutorials on those... Code: window.oModule['Report'] = (function(){ var _privateProp1 = '' , _privateMethod1 = function(){ // ... } , _publicMethod1 = function(){ // ... } , _publicMethod2 = (function(){ var _sub_privateProp1 = '' , _sub_privateMethod1 = function(param1,param2){ // ... } , _sub_publicMethod1 = function(){ // ... } , _sub_publicMethod2 = function(start , end){ // I need to replace this method from somewhere else var _neededValue = ''; for(var i = start ; i<end ; ++i) { // ... _neededValue += _sub_privateMethod1(arg1,arg2) } return _neededValue; } ; return{ '_sub_publicMethod1' : _sub_publicMethod1 , '_sub_publicMethod2' : _sub_publicMethod2 } })() ; return{ '_publicMethod1' : _publicMethod1 , '_publicMethod2' : _publicMethod2 } })(); alert(oModule.Report._publicMethod2._sub_publicMethod2(1,5)) // This works fine oModule.Report._publicMethod2._sub_publicMethod2 = function(start, end){ // Doing this modifies the output of all expressions that already call the sub method (which is what I need) var _neededValue = ''; // ... return start+end } alert(oModule.Report._publicMethod2._sub_publicMethod2(1,5)) // This will alert 6 (as intended) oModule.Report._publicMethod2._sub_publicMethod2 = function(start, end){ // Doing this modifies the output of all expressions that already call the sub method (which is what I need) var _neededValue = ''; for(var i = start ; i<end ; ++i) { // ... different set of instructions _neededValue += _sub_privateMethod1(arg1,arg2) // This line causes an error: _sub_privateMethod1 is undefined } return _neededValue } I have devised the following constructor based loosely on the observer pattern Code: Observer = function (ConditionIsTrue , codeToExecute){ var observer = this , ConditionWasMet = false , CheckIfReady = function () { if (ConditionIsTrue()) { if(!ConditionWasMet) codeToExecute(); ConditionWasMet = true; } else { if (ConditionWasMet) ConditionWasMet = false; } }; Loop.call(observer , CheckIfReady) observer.speed(1) }; It works fine, no problems that I know of... But the most interesting thing happened when I attached it to my lib and ran it through the http://closure-compiler.appspot.com/home compiler Code: $['Observer'] = function (//...etc... For the first time the compiler has added something to my global scope Code: var i=!1; window.$=function(){//...etc... ... Observer:function(j,k){var h=i;Loop.call(this,function(){j()?(h||k(),h=!0):h&&(h=i)});this.speed(1)} } })(); Can someone explain to me why the var ConditionWasMet had to be exported to the global scope? Was it already in the global scope? That would confuse me considering the observer can be called from multiple instances without conflict... But I don't want any surprise conflicts jumping out at me later, I appreciate the consideration. I am writing a rather large bookmarklet. For this bookmarklet I would like to have some user-defined variable values. My idea for this is a bookmarklet code something like this Code: var MY_var = "my value"; (function(){ /* usual loading of bookmarklet script file */ var s=document.createElement('script'); s.type='text/javascript'; s.src='https://myhost.com/path/to/my.js; document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(s); })(); However I can't access the variable MY_var in the bookmarklet script file "my.js". Is there any way I can change the bookmarklet so that I can access MY_var in my.js? I am doing project exercises from a JavaScript book for a college class. I am creating a brand new .html document for each project. I was under the impression that each unique page name would have its very own cookie scope. But to my surprise it seems adding/loading cookies using 'document.cookie' doesn't assign new cookies to each page. I am seeing that when I try to load document.cookie in new .html pages there are cookies that were already created in past pages in the document.cookie property/string. So whats the 'default' scope of a document cookie. Do I have to set the domain property to get unique cookies for each .html page I create? Thanks for the help. Edit: Okay, it seems that cookies have a default scope of the folder your .html page resides in and all sub-folders that your page resides in. I moved my project folder so that it was a sibling of my projects folder and it got its own cookies that way. Recently I had an issue while trying to copy an array: I couldn't understand why modifying the new array caused modifications in the old array Old Pedant cleared that up nicely for me in http://www.codingforums.com/showthread.php?t=240020 Now I'm trying to understand closures, and scope and all that fun stuff thanks to Venegal's great tutorial at reallifejs.com and I have the following: Code: <script> window.USER = (function(){ var Employees = [['Alex',1,'ft',1],['Olivia',2,'ft',1],['Brenda',3,'ft',1],['Michael',4,'ft',1]]; var info = ['Start String']; var Setup = function(){ } return{ CheckLogin : function(login){ this.info = Employees[login]; }, Reset : function(){ }, info:info, Emp:Employees }; })(); </script> And I think I got all the kinks worked out, but there was one thing that I don't understand... Based on my other thread I expected the modification of USER.info to overwrite values in USER.Emp Don't get me wrong, I didn't want that to happen, I am just confused as to why it didn't I used the following buttons to test the values of USER.info and USER.Emp but again, writing to USER.info did not overwrite anything in USER.Emp.... Code: <script> document.write('<button onclick="alert(USER.info)">USER.info read</button>'); document.write('<button onclick="USER.info=\'Test String\'">USER.info write</button>'); document.write('<button onclick="alert(USER.Emp)">Employees read</button>'); document.write('<button onclick="USER.CheckLogin(0)">Check Login</button>'); </script> So what I guess I'm asking is why? Or maybe: what is happening here, and how does it differ from my last issue? Was it maybe a scope issue? Or maybe something more sinister...? |
