JavaScript - Onmouseout Firing When Changing Elements Within The Parent Element
ok so here is the problem in more detail
i have a dropdown menu wrapped in a div attached to this div is the onmouseout event which hides the div this is working the problem however is when moving from 1 link to the next in the dropdown the onmouseout event of the wrapper div is firing and hiding the div prematurely see it live relevant code: Code: <div id="roster_drop" class="drop_menu" style="left: 128px;" onmouseout="this.style.display = 'none';"> <a href="roster.php">Superstars</a> <a href="champions.php">Champions</a> <a href="titlehistory.php">Title History</a> </div> how do i make the event only trigger when your mouse leaves the div itself and not crossing onto a link Similar TutorialsHi folks! I want to display some information in a DIV (div1) that is originally hidden, display it when I hover my mouse over another DIV (div2), and hide it (div1) again when my mouse leaves that specific DIV (div2). My problem is that the onMouseOver and onMouseOut events are fired each time the mouse hovers another element within the div (such as <p> or <a> tags) which is, as far as I understood, a normal behavior, although it looks like a bug. Since the onMouseOver event will trigger an AJAX function and will retrieve some data from my db, I don't want it to be called like 5 times because the user just moved his mouse around, within the DIV and hovered different child elements. I have found this bit of code which is supposed to resolve this issue: PHP Code: function doSomething(e) { if (!e) var e = window.event; var tg = (window.event) ? e.srcElement : e.target; if (tg.nodeName != 'DIV') return; var reltg = (e.relatedTarget) ? e.relatedTarget : e.toElement; while (reltg != tg && reltg.nodeName != 'BODY') reltg= reltg.parentNode if (reltg== tg) return; // Mouseout took place when mouse actually left layer // Handle event } My question is: how do I call this function from my DIV, knowing that originally I have something like: <div id="div2" onMouseOut="hideDiv('div1')"></div> hideDiv being my javascript function that sets div_x to display = none How would I link these 2 functions together? And also is this going to fix the onMouseOver issue at the same time (if the mouse doesn't go out, does it mean it's still in?)? Sorry, my knowledge of javascript is kind of ltd! Thanks in advance for helping me! Hello; I have a situation where an image tag is nested in an anchor tag set. The anchor is assigned an id and is assigned a click/onclick event listener. The anchor id corresponds to a list of objects in an array. In practice, the image tag is receiving the event. The code does setAttribute in another elements img tag src attribute. The image tag receiving the click event, (and passing it to the anchor tag) is event.target. (or event.srcElement, in the case of I.E.) My Question: What I want to know is how to reference the event.target parent element, the anchor tag elements Id attribute. Code: sample anchor/img tag set: <a style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color:#cccccc" id="An 1" alt="An 1" href="javascript:"><img style="border:1px solid;border-color:#cccccc" src="WC_port/windows/img//an_1.jpg" width="100" height="131" /><br /><br />An 1</a> I see the double slash in the img src path attribute. It is working as is in test browser: Firefox ( so far) This is in development stages. Later, I will assign the elements a css class rule. in my code, event.target.src has a usable value (src attribute of the img tag) It does not have a usable value for event.target.id (id attribute of the anchor tag) I am doing it this way so in the absence of javascript, the anchors href attribute defaults to a non scripted value. Thank you for time and attention JK Hi, I have a small problem with a page I'm working on. I have an anchor tag inside a table that has a mouseover event that updates a contextual help box. I need to add a similar mouseover event to the anchor tag that does the same thing, but updates the help box with different text. The problem I have is that when the mouse is over the table, no matter if I move the mouse over the anchor, the help text only displays the message that is passed from the table's mouseover function call. I think the solution *may* be something to do with event bubbling, but I'm not exactly sure how to implement it. The code I'm dealing with is below: The code below is PHP. The table mouseover (for reference): Code: echo "<table class='cleanTable' width='100%' style='margin-top: 5px'"; echo " onMouseOver=\"updateHelpText('Message 1.');\" onMouseOut='clearHelpText();'>"; echo "<tr><th> </th><th> </th><th>First Name</th><th>Surname</th><th>Last Login</th></tr>"; The anchor mouseover: Code: echo "<tr class='cleanrow'><td><a href='newMember.php'><img border='0' src='images/icon_add.gif'></a></td><td></td>"; echo "<td colspan='3'><a class='workbenchLink' href='newMember.php' onMouseOver=\"updateHelpText('Message 2');\" onMouseOut='clearHelpText();'>Invite a new colleague...</a></td></tr>"; echo "</table>"; The function (javascript): Code: function updateHelpText(newText) { document.getElementById("helpBox").innerHTML = "<h4> " + newText + "</h4>"; } Any help with this would be great, thanks. Hi Experts, i have 2 JS array and i need to have dependency between them knowing that 1st Array has parent element of the 2nd one. i.e ARRAY1 ID VAL ID2 2 Dep1 10 3 Dep2 20 4 Dep3 30 ARRAY2 ID VAL ID2 PARENT 20 team1 11 10 21 team2 12 10 22 team3 13 20 23 team4 14 30 i need to have two different DDL's where when i choose VAL = Dep1 on ARRAY1 , i should see on the 2nd DDL only elements with parent corrsponding to Dep1 ( PARENT =10). how this can be possible thanks Hello, I have this short script he Code: function resizeImages() { //Function will be ran onload in the <body> tag var img = document.images; //Puts all the images in an array for (var i = 0; i < img.length; i++) { //A loop to execute a set of functions for every image var parentElement = img[i].parentNode; //Gets parent element of image var parentWidth = parentElement.width(); //Gets width of parent element (value is an integer without "px") var imgWidth = img[i].width(); //Gets image width var parentHeight = parentElement.height(); //Gets height of parent element var imgHeight = img[i].height();//Gets image height if (parentWidth < imgWidth){ img[i].width(parentWidth); //Sets width of image to width of parent element img[i].style.height = "auto"; //Scales height } if (parentHeight > imgHeight){ img[i].height(parentHeight); //Sets height of image to height of parent element img[i].style.width = "auto"; //Scales width } alert(parentWidth); //To test if parentNode is working correctly. Should return an integer. } } It's got some JQuery in it (.width() and .height()) to make manipulation of the dimensions easier to manage. Basically, it's supposed to resize all the images on the webpage to the size of their parent elements (divs) without losing aspect ratio. Image overflow will be hidden so that no matter what the aspect ratio of the image and it's container the largest possible area of the image will be exposed. The alert() function I have at the bottom is supposed to run as a test that each loop is working correctly. However, my images don't get resized and I get no alert. I think the loop may be breaking out before it goes through everything. Anyone have ideas? I'm not a Javascript coder. Thank you, Jared hi, have a series of 2 pages. The first is a drop down select box that gathers the state name. Onclick we are using a window.open to open a page with a list of cities for that state. Again using a drop down select box to select the city and then, onclick, we send the user off to the appropriate page based on state/city selection while at the same time updating the 1st (parent) page with a new location.href. Problem is that instead of updating the parent page, it updates the page with the list of cities (the child page). On the first page script we generate the following warning: Warning: XUL box for _moz_generated_content_after element contained an inline #text child, forcing all its children to be wrapped in a block. Source File: chrome://browser/content/browser.xul Line: 0 First page is not generated via javascript but standard html. This happens both locally and when pages are moved to the server (Apache). First page script is as follows Code: <HTML> <HEAD> <TITLE>J1</TITLE> <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript"> function StateSelect (form) { Item = form.state.selectedIndex; Result = form.state.options[Item].value; window.open('j2.htm?value='+ Result,'myWindow','resizeable=no,resizeable=0,scrollbars=no,scrollbars=0,location=no,location=0,toolbar=no,toolbar=0,directories=no,directories=0,menubar=no,menubar=0,status=no,status=0,copyhistory=no,copyhistory=0,width=300,height=100,left=300,top=300,screenX=300,screenY=300') } </SCRIPT> </HEAD> 2nd page (where user selects city) code is as follows: Code: <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript"> function CitySelect (form) { Item = form.city.selectedIndex; city = form.city.options[Item].value; state = document.myform.state.value; window.open('j3.htm','mywindow3') setTimeout("Func1()",3000); } function Func1() { parent.location.href='j4.htm?st='+ state + '&city=' + city,'mywinow2'; } </SCRIPT> Ideas on why and what the error (actually a warning) is trying to tell us? Thank you all! Jim hey there. im currently working on a page that has three links in the left element that all bring up different content in the right. its a two column page. ive looked into achieving this and while innerHTML is mentioned extensively, its only cited for simple changes (a name, a date, etc) and not necessarily for more involved ones. ive actually tried just plugging in the markup in its entirety in the innerHTML property, but the script seems to quit working after the markup becomes too comprehensive. for instance. Code: function ourReach() { document.getElementById('rightpane').innerHTML = '<img src="ourreach.gif"'> } while Code: function ourReach() { document.getElementById('rightpane').innerHTML = ' <div id="rightpane"> <ul style="position:absolute; top:-15px; left:-30px"> <li class="header" style="margin-top:-10px; margin-bottom:20px">AS A COMPANY</li> <li class="header" style="margin-bottom:5px">What we do</li> <li style="width:500px" class="font1">View Scan Labs is a company founded under the singular belief that the quality of its product not come at the cost of its integrity. </li> <li class="header" style="margin-bottom:5px; margin-top:15px">Who we are</li> <li class="font1" style="width:400px; color:grey"> Content </li> <li style="margin-left:0px; margin-top:30px;color:grey;" class="header" onclick="environment()"><a href="#">Environmental Goals</a></li> <li style="margin-left:0px;margin-top:2px; color:grey " class="header"><a href="#">Our Reach</a></li> </ul> <div style="position:absolute; top:340px; left:30px; width:600px;"> <p class="header" style="position:absolute; left:-20px; top:-75px" >Mailing Address:</span></p> <ul style="margin-left:-59px;margin-top:-40px"> <li class="font1">Bleh Bleh Bleh</li> <li class="font1">309 Bleecker St.</li> <li class="font1">Brooklyn, New York 11231</li> <li class="font1">USA, +1 1339 6525</li> </ul> </div>' } does not. is there a better way to handle this than the innerHTML property. can i put the markup in a separate script and just have that script called up in innerHTML, if anything just so it looks more succinct. thanks. hi all, I was wondering if someone could help me about my problem I want to change the position of my div when the user scroll the page. Example: <div style="position:absolute;bottom:10px;> Scrolling text </div> I want to change the position to fixed when the user scroll the page using javascript. hope you could help. Hola, I have a problem where I have a number of random set of elements that have a fixed rule for class name. I want to move them to a container element according to this class name. So for example the site generates Code: <p class="dog-1"></p> <p class="dog-2"></p> <p class="cat-1"></p> <p class="dog-3"></p> My output would be ideally Code: <div class="dog"> <p class="dog-1"></p> <p class="dog-2"></p> <p class="dog-3"></p> </div> <div class="cat"> <p class="cat-1"></p> </div> When searching for a solution, all I could find was simple ordering of elements according to class... Thanks This is my class doucmnet :: PHP Code: XMLXHttpRequest = function(name){ this._handle = new XMLHttpRequest(); this._method = ''; this._url = ''; this.readyState = 0; this.responseBody = ''; this.responseText = ''; this.responseXML = ''; this.status = 0; this.statusText = ''; this.className = name; this.onreadystatechange = function(){} this.ontimeout = function(){} this.abort = function(){ this._handle.abort(); } this.getAllResponceHeaders = function(){ return this._handle.getAllResponceHaders; } this.getResponceHeader = function(bstrHeader){ return this._handle.getResponceHeader(bstrHeader); } this._readyStateUpdate = function(){ if(typeof(name) !== "undefined"){ name = this.className; } eval(""+name+".onreadystatechange();"); eval(""+name+".readyState = "+name+"._handle.readyState;"); eval(""+name+".status = "+name+"._handle.status;"); eval(""+name+".statusText = "+name+"._handle.statusText;"); eval(""+name+".responseText = "+name+"._handle.responseText;"); eval(""+name+".responseBody = "+name+"._handle.responseBody;"); eval(""+name+".responseXML = "+name+"._handle.responseXML;"); } this.open = function(sMethod, sUrl){ this._readyStateUpdate(); this._handle.onreadystatechange = this._readyStateUpdate; this._handle.ontimeout = this.ontimeout(); this._url = sUrl; this._method = sMethod; } this.send = function(data){ this._handle.open("GET", "xml.php?url="+ this._url + "&method=" + this._method + "&data=" + urlencode(data)); this._handle.send(null); } this.setRequstHeader = function(sName, sValue){ return this._handle.setRequestHeader(sName, sValue); } } What this is supposed to do :: This is a class that is supposed to allow CrossDomain AJAX(XMLXHttpRequest) in the exact same way the XMLHttpRequest dose all the same handlers other then it uses a php file to get all the data now the PHP File works perfectly post and GET - Without cURL. Now most of the class works it can send the data("POST" or "GET") cross domain the only problem seems to be firing the onreadystatechange PHP Code: this.open = function(sMethod, sUrl){ this._readyStateUpdate(); this._handle.onreadystatechange = this._readyStateUpdate; this._handle.ontimeout = this.ontimeout(); this._url = sUrl; this._method = sMethod; } As you can see i have its set to fire the _readyStateUpdate on the onreadystatechange so why is it not fireing, This is tested in FireFox 3.5, ComitBird(Firefox 3.2 Core), Google Chrome and IE and it dose not work in all of them as i know there is a bug with FireFox 3.5 and Firebug wich im a developer i have got it but thats why im testing in GG and IE Any help would be greatly appreciated I have an input text with an onchange event that calls a function in which an alert box displays. I also have a button whose onclick calls a different function. If the user makes a change in the input text and immediately clicks the button, the onchange event fires, displaying the alert box, but the code in the function for the onclick of the button doesn't execute. I've read that this has something to do with event bubbling, but I haven't seen any solutions. Is there a solution? Is it even possible?

Now, part of the site (which works perfectly in IE6/7) doesn't work in Firefox. Here is part of the code: Code: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> <html> <head> <title>Meniu de navigare</title> </head> <body bgcolor="#000437"> <table width="119" style="position:relative; top:35%"> <a href="pag_start.html" rel="nofollow" target="continut"><tr><td class="nav_bar" height="24" background="p1.png" valign="center" onmouseover="background='p2.png'" onmouseout="background='p1.png'" onmousedown="background='p3.png'" onmouseup="background='p2.png'">Home</td></tr></a> blah blah blah </table> </body> </html> (I didn't copy all of the code because it's basically the same all the way down) The main problem is with the link (Firefox apparently doesn't recognize table rows as links). The second problem is with the onmouseover/onmouseout etc handlers (absolutely nothing happens). Any ideas how to solve this? Thanks. Bye. PS: just in case you need to know, the code is for a nav bar. I have a Google Maps JScript that does two things - first it figures out the user's geolocation and then provides directions between two points. The problem occurs in that the geolocation takes a second to run, so the second function has initialLocation as an undefined variable. I need this variable to reflect the value used in the earlier geolocation (which works) in the instance 'var start = initialLocation'. Any suggestions? A way to make the second function wait until the first has completed? Code: <script type="text/javascript"> var initialLocation; var siberia = new google.maps.LatLng(60, 105); var newyork = new google.maps.LatLng(32.77, -79.92); var browserSupportFlag = new Boolean(); var map; var infowindow = new google.maps.InfoWindow(); function handleNoGeolocation(errorFlag) { if (errorFlag == true) { initialLocation = newyork; contentString = "Error: The Geolocation service failed."; } else { initialLocation = siberia; contentString = "Error: Your browser doesn't support geolocation. Are you in Siberia?"; } map.setCenter(initialLocation); infowindow.setContent(contentString); infowindow.setPosition(initialLocation); infowindow.open(map); } var directionDisplay; var directionsService = new google.maps.DirectionsService(); var map; function initialize() { // Try W3C Geolocation method (Preferred) if(navigator.geolocation) { browserSupportFlag = true; navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) { initialLocation = new google.maps.LatLng(position.coords.latitude,position.coords.longitude); contentString = "You are here! (w3c)"; map.setCenter(initialLocation); infowindow.setContent(contentString); infowindow.setPosition(initialLocation); infowindow.open(map); }, function() { handleNoGeolocation(browserSupportFlag); }); } else if (google.gears) { // Try Google Gears Geolocation browserSupportFlag = true; var geo = google.gears.factory.create('beta.geolocation'); geo.getCurrentPosition(function(position) { initialLocation = new google.maps.LatLng(position.latitude,position.longitude); contentString = "You are here! (gears)"; map.setCenter(initialLocation); infowindow.setContent(contentString); infowindow.setPosition(initialLocation); infowindow.open(map); }, function() { handleNoGeolocation(browserSupportFlag); }); } else { // Browser doesn't support Geolocation browserSupportFlag = false; handleNoGeolocation(browserSupportFlag); } directionsDisplay = new google.maps.DirectionsRenderer(); var myOptions = { zoom: 16, mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP } map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map_canvas"), myOptions); directionsDisplay.setMap(map); alert(initialLocation); var start = initialLocation; var end = '<?php echo $address;?>'; var request = { origin:start, destination:end, travelMode: google.maps.DirectionsTravelMode.DRIVING }; directionsService.route(request, function(response, status) { if (status == google.maps.DirectionsStatus.OK) { directionsDisplay.setDirections(response); } }); } </script> hi, i have aded window unload event handler to my code. my page calls some function that takes few secs and page then loads in 5-6 secs. while ths page is loading, if user clicks 'x' on browser window, then code inside unload event handler doesnt get executed. if user waits for page to be loaded fully and hten clicks 'x', then unload event handler gets executed. but i want if during loading user decides to click 'x' button, then also unload handler shold get exucted. i am pasting a sample code that simulates my situation: <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" > <head> <title>Untitled Page</title> <script type="text/javascript"> function unloadPage() { alert('unloaded page'); } function pauseJS(timeInMilliS) { var date = new Date(); var curDate = null; do { curDate = new Date(); }while(curDate-date < timeInMilliS); } </script> </head> <body onload="pauseJS(6000)" onunload="unloadPage()"> <p>Test Page</p> </body> </html> I am using 2 ajax functions in the program. One for login and one for logout. The login one is showUser which is working correctly by using the form onsubmit method, however the logout button (IN BOLD) onclick method is not working. Pls help. Code: <form onsubmit="showUser(document.getElementById('uid').value,document.getElementById('pass').value);return false;" > <div id="txt"><b>Enter your username </b> <input type="text" name= "username" id="uid"> <br> <b>Enter your password</b> <input type="password" name="pass" id="pass"> <br></div> <div id="txt1" style="display : none">help</div> <input type="submit" value="Login" /> <input type="button" onclick="logout(document.getElementById('uid').value); return false; " name="logout" value="Logout" /> <input type="button" value="Register" class="register"/> </form> Hi All, I have a script that is called by the onchange event on my text field (it compares the date entered into the field and issues an alert if the date is earlier than the current date). This worked great on my data entry form but I also want to use the same script in my update form. In the update form the text field is already receiving a value via php: Code: <input name="DateNeeded" type="text" class="formField" id="DateNeeded" onchange="checkDate(this)" value="<?php echo $row_rstRequestDetails['DateNeeded']; ?>" /> and this is causing my onchange event to fire when the page is loaded. Is there a way to suppress the onchange event for the initial page load? Thanks, Ken Hello all, I have a question regarding onmouseover on "a" tag. I currently have a list of "img" thumbnails which have onMouseOver attached to the "a" tag which wraps the "img". When the mouse is over the image, a "preview" of the image will load in another div via a javascript function, this javascript function has a jquery fadeto effect so the preview will fade into view. The problem now is if a user hover over multiple thumbnails quickly, the onMouseOver event is registered multiple times, so when the user finally stop hovering over multiple thumbnails quickly, the last thumbnail will receive the event multiple times and fades in not only once. Below is my code: function previewimage(loadimg){ jloadimg='<img src="../images/'+loadimg+'.png" />'; //stimulate a fade in effect by making the image has 0.7 opacity first $(#largeimage).fadeTo('fast', 0.7, function() { }); $(#largeimage).fadeTo('slow', 1, function() { }); document.getElementById('largeimage').innerHTML=jloadimg; } for the list of thumbnail images, I have: <a onMouseOver="previewimage('imagefile1');"><img src="path/to/thumbnail/image1.png" /></a> <a onMouseOver="previewimage('imagefile2');"><img src="path/to/thumbnail/image2.png" /></a> <a onMouseOver="previewimage('imagefile3');"><img src="path/to/thumbnail/image3.png" /></a> How do I cancel multiple event from running continuosly if the previous one is still in queue? |
