JavaScript - Highlighting Selected Text Using Javascript
HI all,
I am new to this forum and really needs your help. Please let me know how can I highlight a selected portion of an html document with javascript such that the selected portion is repeatedly shown highlighted on each and every page refresh. Thanks & Regards, Sumantra Similar TutorialsHey, I have a jQuery script running on my site that makes it so when you click on a thumbnail, a different overflow:hidden div is scrolled to the anchor point that thumbnail was linking to. I want to make it so the thumbnail that you clicked becomes selected (and all over thumbnails become unselected). This could be with a border, a shadow, an image appearing behind it, opacity - basically anything (preferably an image appearing behind it). I'm pretty much a javascript noob, but common sense tells me that this isn't possibly with basic CSS. How do I go about doing this? PS, if you want a clearer picture of what I'm referring to on my site, check http://bit.ly/83ftPF Thanks a ton for your time, I really appreciate it! -Joel want to get selected text and image values .Since there is an randomly changed text and image on my page.I used window.getSelection() but this will return only selected text values not images ..so please guide me to solve this problem.
like for example i have text areas named upload1 and upload2 when I click or add input on upload1 a drop down list below upload2 will not change, but when I add input on upload2 the dropdown will select "parts" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can some1 help me at this, i am very new to javsciprt and HTML things, so as the title says, a simple bold to the selected text in a div is what i need. below is the div area i have, so how do it?? Code: <TD colspan="25" width="525px" style="text-overflow: ellipsis; overflow: hidden;"> <input type="hidden" $acmForms.bindText("casecomments") /> <div #if (!$acmForms.getFormAttributes().isReadOnly()) CONTENTEDITABLE #end onKeyUp="dairy_limitTextArea(this, 4000)" onKeyDown="dairy_limitTextArea(this, 4000)" id="spell_casecomments" style="width:800px; height:220px; overflow: auto; border: 1px solid #bdcee5;"> </TD> I'm trying to write a function that is similar to the ctrl+f functionality you get in IE, where you have a search string and when you click 'next' the whole string if matched is highlighted by the cursor. This works fine for inputs and text areas using the following code: Code: function setCaretPos(obj, start, end) { var range = obj.createTextRange(); range.moveStart('character', start); range.moveEnd('character', end - obj.value.length); range.select(); } But now I need to get it to work for normal text in a text node that is in the HTML/DOM. Is there an equivalent way of making the above method work for text in text nodes? Alternatively is there a way to make the browser (IE) at least focus on some text in a text node? (I could then highlight it with CSS styles). Alright, I'm using a Rooh.It WordPress plugin right now, but I don't like the way they do it, so I want to write my own code to do something similar. I want the user to be able to select the text they want to highlight, and the background color of that text changes to whatever color they have selected. How can I do this in JavaScript? hello i've followed this javascript and i'd like to link the text to one of my page. How do i place the ahref tag in the script.Appreciate your help http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/script2/neontext.shtml Hello. I have a textarea where user can select a text then copy to clipboard (using EditArea script for highlighting) I need append additional information to the selected text so it won't be visible in the textarea, but only appear after copied to clipboard. For example: Code: text line one text line two text line three user selected word "two", hit CTRL+C to copy into clipboard (or used browser's context menu), but in clipboard it should be saved as: "selected word 'two'" What would be the approach? Thank you. I retrieve a list of links from a database using ajax, then I assign them to the innerHTML property of a div whose display property is set to "none" Then I set the display property to "display" to get a drop-down listbox. The problem is the links in the list are all hilighted like they've been dragged over by a mouse. How do I prevent these links from highlighting? I have a select box with a few options. When the page loads I need to get the selected option in this select box and alert its inner text. Yet everything I try out on the net that should work wont work in IE, all other browser its fine. Please can someone show me the TRUE and correct way to get the inner text of a option from a select box in IE? Thanks! How can I get the selected text of a textarea with JavaScript? example: Code: <form name="reportForm"> <textarea name="report"></textarea> <br /> <input type="button" onClick="GetSelectedText();" /> </form> Thanks IC I searched about this problem over Internet and found the same result many times, I found this example on stack overflow but this example didn't work in my project; I am making a toolbar with buttons that insert HTML tags around the selected text in a <textarea>, this exemple didn't work because when the user click on a button the selected text won't be selected anymore because <textarea> loses focus and selected text will be unselected, I am targeting Firefox and compatible browsers so you don't need to give me the IE code; jQuery codes are accepted; so, have you any idea?
I'm taking a beginning javascript class and have been trying to figure out one last part of a homework assignment and am just not seeing how to work it out. Any help is greatly appreciated! What I'm having trouble with is doing the text verification. When a user selects an option from the select list they then need to type in the text area given. If the user doesn't type the word selected in the list then an error message should appear under the text area. If you look at my code you'll see that I have the text_check() function doing the verification. I can get it to work when there is only one option but once I add the other two it stops working. I've tried if... else and other variations, but can't seem to nail it down. Thanks! Code: function select_function() { var medical=document.getElementById("medical_list") var selected_item=medical.selectedIndex if (selected_item==0) { document.getElementById("enter_info").innerHTML="Enter Your" +"<span style='color:blue'>" +" Medication" + "</span>"+ " Information" var comments=document.getElementById("comments"); comments.focus(); } if (selected_item==1) { document.getElementById("enter_info").innerHTML="Enter Your" +"<span style='color:blue'>" +" Hospitalization" + "</span>"+ " Information" var comments=document.getElementById("comments"); comments.focus(); } if (selected_item==2) { document.getElementById("enter_info").innerHTML="Enter Your" +"<span style='color:blue'>" +" Physician" + "</span>"+ " Information" var comments=document.getElementById("comments"); comments.focus(); } } function text_check() { var user_comments=document.getElementById("comments").value.toLowerCase(); var med_comment=user_comments.indexOf('medication'); var hosp_comment=user_comments.indexOf('hospitalization'); var phys_comment=user_comments.indexOf('physician'); mySelectList = document.getElementById("medical_list"); if (mySelectList.value='Medication' && med_comment==-1) { document.getElementById("word_error").innerHTML="You need to have the word,"+"<span style='color:red'>"+" Medication"+"</span>"+" somewhere in the text"; } if (mySelectList.value='Hospitalization' && hosp_comment==-1) { document.getElementById("word_error").innerHTML="You need to have the word,"+"<span style='color:red'>"+" Hospitalization"+"</span>"+" somewhere in the text"; } if (mySelectList.value= 'Physician' && phys_comment==-1) { document.getElementById("word_error").innerHTML="You need to have the word,"+"<span style='color:red'>"+" Physician"+"</span>"+" somewhere in the text"; } } function submit_alert() { alert("You submitted the form") } function clear_error() { document.getElementById("word_error").innerHTML=""; } function changeDR() { var my_textarea=document.getElementById("comments"); var comment_string=my_textarea.value; var doctor=comment_string.indexOf('Dr.'); var comment_string2=''; if (comment_string < 0) { comment_string2=comment_string } else { comment_string2=comment_string.replace('Dr.','Doctor') } my_textarea.value=comment_string2; } </script> </head> <body style="background-color: silver"> <h2>Medical History</h2> Select Category: <br> <select id="medical_list" onChange="select_function();"> <option>Medication</option> <option>Hospitalization</option> <option>Physician</option> </select> <br><br><br> <div id="enter_info">Enter Your <font color="blue">Medication</font> Information:</div> <br> <form method="post" action=""> <textarea id="comments" cols="60" rows="15" onBlur="text_check();" onFocus="clear_error();" onkeyup="changeDR();"> </textarea><br> <div id="word_error"></div><br> <input type="submit" value="Submit Information" onClick="submit_alert();"/> </form> </body> </html> Hi, Can somebody help me with the coding. Similar behavior like it is in TinyMCE. Here is my validation script from dreamweaver i also have it in php for server side. But I trying to get a checkbox to make a text field required when you select it. Right now I have it so when you hit submit whether the text field is filled out or whether the checkbox is selected or not the error message comes up no matter what i do please help. the link to the page is http://www.mark-10.com/inquiries2 Code: function validateCheckbox() { if(document.forms["form1"].sales.checked) { if(document.forms["form1"].telephone.value.length < 12) { // xxx-xxx-xxxx return false ; } else { return true; } } } function MM_validateForm() { //v4.0 if (document.getElementById){ var i,p,q,nm,test,num,min,max,errors='',args=MM_validateForm.arguments; for (i=0; i<(args.length-2); i+=3) { test=args[i+2]; val=document.getElementById(args[i]); if (val) { nm=val.name; if ((val=val.value)!="") { if (test.indexOf('isEmail')!=-1) { p=val.indexOf('@'); if (p<1 || p==(val.length-1)) errors+='- '+nm+' must contain an e-mail address.\n'; } else if (test!='R') { num = parseFloat(val); if (isNaN(val)) errors+='- '+nm+' must contain a number.\n'; if (test.indexOf('inRange') != -1) { p=test.indexOf(':'); min=test.substring(8,p); max=test.substring(p+1); if (num<min || max<num) errors+='- '+nm+' must contain a number between '+min+' and '+max+'.\n'; } } } else if (test.charAt(0) == 'R') errors += '- '+nm+' is required.\n'; } } if(!validateCheckbox()) { errors+="If checkbox checked, please include telephone number"; } if (errors) alert('The following error(s) occurred:\n'+errors); document.MM_returnValue = (errors == ''); } } //--> I'm not that familiar with classic ASP or Javascript but need to change an exisiting program to do the following: Add a link to a page but only for certain marketers. I have a classic ASP page that has a couple of hyperlinks for each marketer that is selected from a combobox drop down. The new hyperlink is to be added but only for select marketers. The rest don't even get to see this new hyperlink. I added a function in Javascript as such: Code: function IsPikeESCO(UID,UCD) { var strTemp; var mktrno, mktname; var frm; var IsPike; IsPike = false; frm = document.Downloads; strTemp=frm.MKTRACCT.options[frm.MKTRACCT.selectedIndex].text; mktrno=strTemp.substring(0,10); switch (mktrno) { case 8: IsPike = True; break; case 99: IsPike = True; break; case 162: IsPike = True; break; } return IsPike; } Now I need to check if True then display the hyperlink, so I came up with this, which I know is not correct: Code: <tr><td></td><td <%IF <a HREF="javascript:IsPikeESCO('<%response.write request("passUID")%>','<%response.write request("passUCD")%>')" = True THEN%> onMouseOver="/orradata/pike.DAT">Pike Data</font></a> <%END IF%> I want to be able to check the fuction for each marketer and if return is TRUE, then produce the hyperlink which will open a data file if clicked. Can someone help? I'm not sure how to use the <%IF statement in conjunction with a javascript function that checks for a return value, and based on that return value, does some action. i'm working with a city select option, a hotel select option & an iframe. the hotel select option is populated depending on the chosen city which then updates the iframe src. this is all working fine. the trouble im having is that when the page is refreshed, normal f5 way, the hotel option changes whereas the city option & the iframe src remains the same?? this problem does not occur on a force refresh via control + f5 as then both select options & iframe src revert to their original state. I don't want the city option to change upon a normal page refresh. how do I go about this? below are the city, hotel select options & iframe Code: <form name="hotelslist" id="hotelslist"> <select id="cities" name="cities" onChange="hotel_list(hotelslist.cities.selectedIndex);loadHotel();"> <option value="Baddeck">Baddeck</option> <option value="Banff">Banff</option> </select> <select id="hotelnames" name="hotelnames" onChange="loadHotel();"> <option value="Inverary Resort, Baddeck">Inverary Resort, Baddeck</option> </select> </form> <iframe name="hotelframe" id="hotelframe" src="http://www.google.com" scrolling="no" width="660" height="1000" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" hspace="0" vspace="0" frameborder="0"> <p>Your browser does not support iframes.</p> </iframe> below is my javascript functions Code: function loadHotel() { var destURL = document.hotelslist.hotelnames.options[document.hotelslist.hotelnames.selectedIndex].value; window.frames["hotelframe"].location = destURL; } var i; function hotel_list(i){ var hotelslist = document.getElementById("hotelslist"); hotelslist.hotelnames.options.length=0; switch(i) { case 0: //Baddeck hotelslist.hotelnames.options[0] =new Option('Inverary Resort, Baddeck','http://www.test0.com'); break; case 1: //Banff hotelslist.hotelnames.options[0] =new Option('Banff Caribou Lodge & Spa','http://www.test1.com'); hotelslist.hotelnames.options[1] =new Option('Banff Ptarmigan Inn','http://www.test2.com'); hotelslist.hotelnames.options[2] =new Option('Banff Rocky Mountain Resort','http://www.test3.com'); hotelslist.hotelnames.options[3] =new Option('The Rimrock Resort','http://www.test4.com'); hotelslist.hotelnames.options[4] =new Option('Fairmont Banff Springs','http://www.test5.com/'); break; } } can some one please advise on a cross browser solution? thanks in advance. Omar. what can be the reasons for the same code which works perfectly in notepad to not show its result in a jsp application done using eclipse??anything to do with settings? I am not able to display the current date as default in dd/mm/yyyy format in drop down boxes..only dd and yyyy apears but month isnt apearing as default.. can u suggest alternative logic and its code to implement the same?? As of right now I have a code that will work in IE but wont work in FireFox...go figure.
