JavaScript - How To Make This Really Beautiful Pattern

I have seen this pattern in http://www.altsoftware.com/index.php . there are news menu in the left side . Please visit this site . Basically I am trying to find out if first is equal to one in the mydata string. Please advise because my above attempt is not working.
