JavaScript - Remove Element Simple Script Error
Hello,
I am new to Javascript. I copied this script from the web, but I get an error at this line: parent.removeChild(child); The error says "Invalid argument". Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Code: <div id="parent" align=center> <form name=mainfrm method=post> <script language="JavaScript"> function doDelete(str1,str2) { var parent = document.getElementById(str1); var child = document.getElementById(str2); parent.removeChild(child); alert ("box removed"); } </script> <br><br> <table> <td class=stdbut1 onmouseover="this.className='stdbut1on'" onClick="doDelete('parent','child');" onmouseout="this.className='stdbut1'">Delete Box</td> </table> <br><br> <div id="child" class=titlebox1>Box</div> </form> </div> Similar TutorialsHello I am pretty new to AJAX & I am making a simple program to input new text refresh inside the HTML element that has the id='result'. My Problem: - The AJAX script fails when I try to change the text inside 'result' using my code, sometimes a whole new page opens with the text I wanted to put inside the result HTML element. Sometimes I just get a notification that an error occured. - I believe it is because of my function state_changed & using the parameter element_id with the function getElementById(element_id).innerHTML = ...; - It should be easy to see where my problem occurs when you look at my code Any advice on why the script fails & how to fix it would be extremely helpful. Code: var xmlHttp; function ajax_compatible() { // Post: Returns an object if browser is AJAX compatible else false. if (window.XMLHttpRequest) { // users web browser can support AJAX return ( new XMLHttpRequest() ); } else if (window.ActiveXObject) { // users web browser is IE6 and IE5 return ( new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP") ); } else { alert("Unfortunately your browser does not support AJAX."); return null; } } function get_cookie(cookie_name) { if (document.cookie.length > 0) { c_start = document.cookie.indexOf(cookie_name + "="); if (c_start != -1) { c_start = c_start + cookie_name.length+1; c_end = document.cookie.indexOf(";",c_start) if (c_end == -1) { c_end = document.cookie.length; } return unescape(document.cookie.substring(c_start,c_end)) } } return "" } function add_comment() { // Post: Add user comment & rating to database and update new table row. // DO WE NEED TO SEND COOKIE ASWELL OR IS IT ALREADY DONE??? xmlHttp = ajax_compatible(); if (xmlHttp == null) { return; } var url = 'http://localhost:8000/cgi-bin/main.py'; alert("add_comment() running"); // Extract CGI variables to pass onto python script var id = document.getElementById('videoID').value; var video_id = 'videoID=' + id; var rating = 'rating=' + document.getElementsByName('rating').value; var comment = 'comment=' + document.getElementById('comment').value; var add_rating = 'addRating=' + document.getElementById('addRating').value; //var cookie = document.cookie; cgi_var = video_id + '&' + rating + '&' + comment + '&' + add_rating; // + '&' + cookie; // open python script xmlHttp.open('POST',url, true); xmlHttp.setRequestHeader('Content-Type', 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded'); // Error is in below line xmlHttp.onreadystatechange = state_changed(id); // if I use the following line then it works // xmlHttp.onreadystatechange = test; xmlHttp.send(cgi_var); } function state_changed(element_id) { // Post: Use one function that will be used for each page update. // This function sends the text returned by the python server script // onto the browser(HTML element with the id 'element_id') to be displayed. if (xmlHttp.readyState == 4) { document.getElementById(element_id).innerHTML = xmlHttp.responseText; } } function test() { // Post: used to test where the problem occurs // This function works if (xmlHttp.readyState == 4) { document.getElementById('result').innerHTML = xmlHttp.responseText; } } Hi guys i'm new to the world of programming and have been watching some videos on youtube by thenewboston to get to know Java. In one of his tutorials he shows you how to make a basic calculator but i wanted to improve it by adding the option to choose which operation you want to perform. However not being familiar with code i cannot think of a way to put it so that it is error free.I do also have a seperate class file which coresponds with the second paragraph. The errors appear in the if statements because of the characters * / - +. I am currently using eclipse to write my code as it is very useful for showing you your mistakes. Thanks in advance. Code: Scanner tut7 = new Scanner(System.in); double fnum, snum, answer; System.out.println("Enter First Number Please:"); fnum = tut7.nextDouble(); System.out.println("Enter Second Number Please:"); snum = tut7.nextDouble(); Scanner opinput = new Scanner(System.in); Operation OperationObject = new Operation(); System.out.println("Enter What Operation You Want to Perform: "); String oper = opinput.nextLine(); OperationObject.calc(oper); if (oper = * ){ answer = fnum * snum; System.out.print("The Answer is: "); System.out.println(answer); }else{ if (oper = / ){ answer = fnum / snum; System.out.print("The Answer is: "); System.out.println(answer); }else{ if (oper = + ){ answer = fnum + snum; System.out.print("The Answer is: "); System.out.println(answer); }else{ if (oper = - ){ answer = fnum - snum; System.out.print("The Answer is: "); System.out.println(answer); }else{ System.out.println("Invalid Operation!!!"); } } } I am asking a pretty simple question, but you got to start learning somewhere, you know! Anyway, I have implemented a script that resizes images into small thumbs on the left side of a page and shows the full size image on the right when the user click on a thumb. It works well. However, I have a possible 10 thumbs on theleft and my database that feeds this does not always have 10 images. Since I re-use the page for mutiple listings, I need to find a way to disable the broken image link for listings that don't have 10 thumbs. I have attached a picture of what it looks like. Here is the script: Code: #jgal { list-style: none; width: 200px; } #jgal li { opacity: .5; float:left; display: block; height:60px; width:60px; overflow:hidden; background-position: 50% 50%; cursor: pointer; border: 3px solid #fff; outline: 1px solid #ddd; margin-right: 14px; margin-bottom: 14px; } #jgal li img { height:60px; width:auto; } #jgal li.active img { display: block; } #jgal li.active, #jgal li:hover { outline-color: #bbb; opacity: .99 /* safari bug */ } /* styling without javascript */ #gallery { list-style: none; display: block; } #gallery li { float: left; margin: 0 10px 10px 0; } </style> <!--[if lt IE 8]> <style media="screen, projection" type="text/css"> #jgal li { filter: alpha(opacity=50); } #jgal li.active, #jgal li:hover { filter: alpha(opacity=100); } </style> <![endif]--> <script type="text/javascript">document.write("<style type='text/css'> #gallery { display: none; } </style>");</script> <!--[if lt IE 6]><style media="screen, projection" type="text/css">#gallery { display: block; }</style><![endif]--> <script type="text/javascript"> var gal = { init : function() { if (!document.getElementById || !document.createElement || !document.appendChild) return false; if (document.getElementById('gallery')) document.getElementById('gallery').id = 'jgal'; var li = document.getElementById('jgal').getElementsByTagName('li'); enlargedImg = document.createElement('img'); document.getElementById('jgal').parentNode.insertBefore(enlargedImg,document.getElementById('jgal').nextSibling); enlargedImg.src = li[0].getElementsByTagName('img')[0].src; li[0].className = 'active'; for (i=0; i<li.length; i++) { li[i].style.backgroundImage = 'url(' + li[i].getElementsByTagName('img')[0].src + ')'; li[i].style.backgroundRepeat = 'no-repeat'; li[i].title = li[i].getElementsByTagName('img')[0].alt; gal.addEvent(li[i],'click',function() { var im = document.getElementById('jgal').getElementsByTagName('li'); for (j=0; j<im.length; j++) { im[j].className = ''; } this.className = 'active'; enlargedImg.src = this.getElementsByTagName('img')[0].src; }); } }, addEvent : function(obj, type, fn) { if (obj.addEventListener) { obj.addEventListener(type, fn, false); } else if (obj.attachEvent) { obj["e"+type+fn] = fn; obj[type+fn] = function() { obj["e"+type+fn]( window.event ); } obj.attachEvent("on"+type, obj[type+fn]); } } } gal.addEvent(window,'load', function() { gal.init(); }); And then my list basically looks like this: Code: <ul id="gallery"> <li><img src="images/details/<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemThumb5']; ?>" alt="<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemDesc5']; ?>"></li> <li><img src="images/details/<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemThumb6']; ?>" alt="<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemDesc6']; ?>"></li> <li><img src="images/details/<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemThumb7']; ?>" alt="<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemDesc7']; ?>"></li> <li><img src="images/details/<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemThumb8']; ?>" alt="<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemDesc8']; ?>"></li> <li><img src="images/details/<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemThumb9']; ?>" alt="<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemDesc9']; ?>"></li> <li><img src="images/details/<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemThumb10']; ?>" alt="<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemDesc10']; ?>"></li> <li><img src="images/details/<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemThumb11']; ?>" alt="<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemDesc11']; ?>"></li> <li><img src="images/details/<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemThumb12']; ?>" alt="<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemDesc12']; ?>"></li> <li><img src="images/details/<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemThumb13']; ?>" alt="<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemDesc13']; ?>"></li> <li><img src="images/details/<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemThumb14']; ?>" alt="<?php echo $row_WADAitems['ItemDesc14']; ?>"></li> </ul> So as you can see, if I don't have an image in the database that it pulls from, I get that icon for a broken image link. How can I remove that icon so it doesn't show the no image icon? Many thanks! Hi, I have a regular expression which removes anything between <script> and </script> tags. The problem comes when there is more than one on a page, eg. Code: <script>lose this</script> content I want to keep <script>lose this</script> Everything in that string is removed... how can I limit it to complete tags only? I did a search but could only find ones that either remove tags only, or have the same problem as mine. Cheers, Gus I have a check box right now that calls an onClick event. Here is the Input: Code: <input name="usePad" type="checkbox" value="usePad" id="usePad" onclick="showBind('padShow','padOk')" /> Here is the Script: Code: var xmlhttpshowBind; var showBindDiv; function showBind(BindPage,BindDiv) { xmlhttpshowBind=GetXmlHttpObject(); if (xmlhttpshowBind==null) { alert ("Browser does not support HTTP Request"); return; } var url="/scripts/"+BindPage+".php"; showBindDiv=BindDiv; xmlhttpshowBind.onreadystatechange=showBindGet; xmlhttpshowBind.open("GET",url, true); xmlhttpshowBind.send(null); } function showBindGet() { if (xmlhttpshowBind.readyState==4) { document.getElementById(showBindDiv).innerHTML=xmlhttpshowBind.responseText; } } It works great to fill the div called for, but I would like it to remove the div contents if it's unchecked, I'm not sure how to do this?? Any help would be appreciated! Thank you in advance! I'm working on a webpage where I used this code to display random images. I used it for three images in a row and I keep getting white spacing in between them when they should be right up against each other. This is the code I'm using: Code: <script language="JavaScript"> <!-- /* Random Image Script- By JavaScript Kit (http://www.javascriptkit.com) Over 400+ free JavaScripts here! Keep this notice intact please */ function random_imglink(){ var myimagesblue=new Array() //specify random images below. You can have as many as you wish myimagesblue[1]="images/circles_blue/circle_bl_01.jpg" myimagesblue[2]="images/circles_blue/circle_bl_02.jpg" myimagesblue[3]="images/circles_blue/circle_bl_03.jpg" myimagesblue[4]="images/circles_blue/circle_bl_04.jpg" myimagesblue[5]="images/circles_blue/circle_bl_05.jpg" myimagesblue[6]="images/circles_blue/circle_bl_06.jpg" myimagesblue[7]="images/circles_blue/circle_bl_07.jpg" myimagesblue[8]="images/circles_blue/circle_bl_08.jpg" myimagesblue[9]="images/circles_blue/circle_bl_09.jpg" myimagesblue[10]="images/circles_blue/circle_bl_10.jpg" myimagesblue[11]="images/circles_blue/circle_bl_11.jpg" var ry=Math.floor(Math.random()*myimagesblue.length) if (ry==0) ry=1 document.write('<img src="'+myimagesblue[ry]+'" border=0>') } random_imglink() //--> </script> Is there a way to get the white space removed? Thanks Hi, I got this two javascripts: - Datepicker by Jason Moon (http://calendar.moonscript.com/dateinput.cfm) which can have multiple of this datepicker on a single form - Dynamic Add/Remove rows from http://viralpatel.net/blogs/2009/03/...avascript.html I would like to add rows of fields with each rows having it's individual datepicker. Code: <table id="billcmp_7" width="320" border="0"> <tr> <td width="200" align="center"><script>DateInput('billcmp7_cycle', true)</script></td> <td width="10"> </td> <td width="100" align="center"><input name="billcmp7_name" type="text" /></td> <td width="10"><INPUT type="checkbox" name="chk"/></td> </tr> </table> <table width="320" border="0"> <tr> <td colspan="4" align="center"><INPUT type="button" value="Add Row" onclick="addRow('billcmp_7')" /><INPUT type="button" value="Delete Row" onclick="deleteRow('billcmp_7')" /></td> </tr> </table> I just want this section Code: <script>DateInput('billcmp7_cycle', true)</script> to work like Code: <script>DateInput('billcmp7_cycle_1', false)</script> <script>DateInput('billcmp7_cycle_2', false)</script> when click on the add button. Here's what i meant? Link cant get the time to be different as it is still read as single datepicker. Any1 has any idea how or any alternative? (just started JS 2 weeks ago) -- this is also my first time posting here, if my post isnt following the proper template let me know and Ill fix it .. Thanks so much for taking the time to check this out in advance Im trying to make the first ul tag in the each slideMenus[] array index values have a position of left = 0px I keep recieving this error however ____________________________________________________ Error: slideMenus[i].getElementsByTagName("ul").style is undefined Line: 63 ------------------------------------------------------------------ the script in question is in [code]. Could someone tell me if I am just making a syntax error if not ill try redoing the whole thing. window.onload = makeMenus var currentSlide = null var timeID = null leftPos = 0 function makeMenus(){ var slideMenus = new Array() var allElems = document.getElementsByTagName("*") var slideListArr = new Array() for(var i=0 ; i < allElems.length ; i++){ if(allElems[i].className = "slideMenu") slideMenus.push(allElems[i]) } for(var i=0 ; i < slideMenus.length ; i++){ slideMenus[i].onclick = showSlide; Code: slideMenus[i].getElementsByTagName("ul")[0].style.left = "0px"; } document.getElementById("head").onClick = closeSlide document.getElementById("main").onClick = closeSlide } function showSlide(){ var slideList = this.getElementsByTagName("ul")[0] // mess with this if((currentSlide != null) && (currentSlide.id == slideList.id)) {closeSlide()} else{ closeSlide(); var currentSlide = slideList; currentSlide.style.display = "block"; timeID = setInterval('moveSlide()', 1); } } function closeSlide(){ if(currentSlide){ clearInterval(timeID); currentSlide.style.left = "0px" currentSlide.style.display = "none"; var currentSlide = null } } function moveSlide(){ var leftPos = leftPos + 5; if(leftPos <= 220) {currentSlide.style.left = leftPos + "px"} else{ clearInterval(timeID); var leftPos = 0} } The script inside my opening if statement is working, but is the rest of this written right? I'm just want my script to run after it makes sure that a div class named single-journal-entry-wrapper is on the page. Code: function doit() { document.getElementsByTagName("div") for ( var x = 0; x < div.length; x++ ) { var div = div[x]; if ( div.className.indexOf("single-journal-entry-wrapper") >= 0 ) { do somethang!} } } { Hi, Below is the code which is used to validate the entries on a form(some field are not be left blank). The user gets the msg when he hits the "Check"button. The problem is after the user gets the msg, I am not able to set the focus in the field which is the first element of an error array which stores the info about the fields with errors on this form. Should return an integer. } } It's got some JQuery in it (.width() and .height()) to make manipulation of the dimensions easier to manage. Basically, it's supposed to resize all the images on the webpage to the size of their parent elements (divs) without losing aspect ratio. Image overflow will be hidden so that no matter what the aspect ratio of the image and it's container the largest possible area of the image will be exposed. The alert() function I have at the bottom is supposed to run as a test that each loop is working correctly. However, my images don't get resized and I get no alert. I think the loop may be breaking out before it goes through everything. Anyone have ideas? I'm not a Javascript coder. Thank you, Jared Hi, I need a very simple script that will do the following : I have a HTML form. I have an input call "title". Say I wrote "fleur-de-lys" I have a text area call "text" When I hit the submit button I want to do : 1. Create a HTML webpage with the name in input : fleur-de-lys.html 2. Add the text in "text" somewhere in the body of that new file fleur-de-lys.html 3. Add a preview of that text somewhere in my index page Basically it's like you post a new article on wordpress or whatever, but I just want something simple no database and just need help on how I do this. Thank you very much ok i am trying to make a countdown timer from 20 seconds when i click start where am i going wrong with this Code: <html> <head> </head> <body> <script type="text/javascript"> function timer() { var milisec=0 var seconds=20 document.counter.d2.value=20 function display() { if (milisec<=0){ milisec=9 seconds-=1 } if (seconds<=-1){ milisec=0 seconds+=1 } else milisec-=1 document.counter.d2.value=seconds+"."+milisec setTimeout("display()",100) display() }} </script> <form name="counter"> <center> Text Timer<br> <input type="text" size="30" name="d2"> <br> <input type="button" onclick="timer()" value="click me to start"> </center> </form> </body> </html> Hey guys, so I am a designer (not a developer) doing a site for someone. I am playing with some simple free javascripts. I have lightbox and toggler. Both work great individually. They are conflicting and everywhere online says to set the both to onLoad in the body tag. Sounds easy enough. But I can't seem to figure out the call for this script: Code: <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="../js/expand.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(function() { $("h2.expand").toggler({method: "fadeToggle"}); }); //--><!]]> </script> <body onload="toggler();initLightbox()"> is what is seems like it should be for me. But that isn't working at all. Please help! I feel like I have tried every possible name with the toggler()... If you need more, I can point you to the site itself and you can see all of the (messy) code. Hey, so I have successfully used this tutorial; http://articles.sitepoint.com/articl...y-javascript/3 to create a web page that "smoothscrolls" down to a certain point of content on the page. So, I know the java works! My problem is, I have changed the website to be along the X axes and not the Y, so instead of it scrolling "down" the page, I would like it to scroll from left to right. i.e on the X axes not the Y. Is there anyway of doing this by editing that java file? All my buttons work and display the correct part of the website, but the java doesn't work slidiing sideways. Thank you in advance! Darren Code: <script type="text/javascript"> function toggleVisibility4(controlId) { var z = document.forms["frm_sms"]["phone"].value; var minimumnum = 10; var control = document.getElementById(controlId); if (z.length <= minimumnum) { control.style.visibility = "visible"; } else { control.style.visibility = "hidden"; } </script> im not sure where im going wrong i am calling this script from a " onkeyup="toggleVisibility4('arrow')" " the arrow is a div i am wanting to hide when the input field "phone" on a form id of "frm_sms" has more than 10 characters any ideas guys Hi all, I know this sounds absurd, but I like to display a clickable image in javascript. I have searched the net for like 2 hours, and I simply CANT find any page that can help me with that extremely simple javascript. This is how its look like in html: Code: <a href="http://www.horse.com"><img src="jul.jpg" width="468" height="80" border="0" /></a> Please! How can I make that simple code in javascript?! Thanks! I am a very novice web coder and can't get this to work... I've tried everything and am getting no where but frustrated! Thanks in advance!!
