JavaScript - Using A Function Via Document.write (do I Need Eval?)
Hi All,
I have a problem in which I try to execute a funcition via a document.write() and it throws an "object expected" error. Overall I am making an interface for MS ACCESS .mdb table via ADODB using JavaScript and I want to be able to click on a link and the id is used to delete that entry. What I wanted to do is to link to a new page having a date range input in the form of 6 text boxes, 2 sets of mm-dd-yy, from and to, where the upon loading the page box 1 of the from would auto focus and then auto tab and then post where php could take over on the server side. First issue with this: When I first get to the page everything is just as ordered. The focus is on the text box and the default value is "type a No." When I press a key onkeyup, I bring up the alert box with "is this working" in it. But when I refresh the page with the refresh button, after clicking the "ok" on the alert box, the character that was typed in is still displayed. If I use the link to the page, or the URL from the address bar, then the page reloads properly with the default value, "type a No". Question 1: How do you get the default textbox value using the refresh button as apposed to reloading the page using a link or from the address bar? Using Firefox 8.0 Second and more important at the moment: If I change the script to pass an argument to the function the script crashes. It does not pull up an alert box and freezes. My guess is that I'm doing something wrong on a concept level. NOTE: changed the default value of the text box to " ". Question 2: can someone straighten me out with this? ok so Code: document.write("Goodbye!");

and it stops working? I know the function call works because when I place some code to display an image in SayHello function, it displays the image. I'm working on a website that will basically embed a widget/frame sent by a handler into a user's current page. The user basically adds a script tag to where they would like the HTML to be. The script tag has their settings and is basically a document.write that calls all the code that we want displayed. So here's my problem. We have a map that we need to add in a specific section, and to get the map we have to call another script tag. So we end up having a script tag (map) embedded in another script tag (the code for the widget/frame) or we end up having to document.write inside a document.write. Now this works just fine and as expected in Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. However, Internet Explorer and Opera wait until the first document.write is completely finished before calling the embedded one. Of course the problem with this, is that it takes the map out of the document's flow and just appends it to the bottom left of the page. Since the rest of the page has already been called, there's no way to move the interior "map" script. Any ideas? Basically just trying to figure out how (if even possible) to render an embedded script tag in Internet Explorer and be able to place it properly. I've tried everything that I can think of, including AJAX and Google's unescape script. Any suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it. Or even if you've encountered a similar problem, and know that it just isn't possible in IE or Opera, that would be fine too. Thanks in advance! My code is here and it works ... Hi - I wrote some code that uses the eval function. I am in the process of rewriting the code to improve on it where possible (a learning exercise). I have read that eval is evil because of security concerns and that the eval'd code is not compiled prior to runtime. I don't think my use of eval presents a security concern. However, I wonder if there is some way to replace the eval function with a more natural technique. I have done this using eval(); also using a new Function method. I have tried using a window[] method but I can't get that to work. OK, on the the actual code: The purpose of the javascript is to count keystrokes. I have a bunch of global counter variables declared in this fashion: Code: MyLib.CountQ=0; MyLib.CountW=0; MyLib.CountE=0; MyLib.CountR=0; MyLib.CountT=0; MyLib.CountY=0; MyLib.CountU=0; MyLib.CountI=0; MyLib.CountO=0; MyLib.CountP=0; When the Count function is called I want to update the appropriate counter. Thus: MyLib.Count'+varkeyname+'+=1; Where varkeyname is 'q' or 'w' or 'e' etc. Code: //MyLib is a global variable namespace.

You can see that I have replaced the eval function with another function - but since this is also not compiled prior to runtime I don't think this is an improvement. I have read about using the window[string] method but I can't get it to work. This is not a critical issue but I'd appreciate any comments. I know how to make a script that when you click on a button it changes a variable. I also know that with document.write I can express this variable but I do not know how to refresh document.write! It comes out as: Personal Information *whatever the value of resInfo is* I would like it so it reads as (underscores being the spaces): Personal Information________*whatever the value of resInfo is* I've tried using   but could not get it to work, maybe I'm using it wrong. If anyone could shed some light on this for me it'd really help. If you need to see some more of my code let me know too. This seems like it should be easy but I can't figure it out. I am trying to set up a drop down list to interpret an abbreviation and to also hyper link to a site about the object. I want it to stay in the <textarea> and not write a new document but it is the only way I have been able to get a hyperlink. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Im having an issue placing a document.write output in a specifc place (after my form), i want the document.write output to be produced from an if statement which is based on a variable within a function the document.write output is to be placed outside the script thought :S into another div CODE if (count<5) { document.write('unlucky') } any ideas?
